Producer: What actor do you want to play Richard Sackler?
John Oliver: Yes
Producer: Sigh, this is going to get expensive again.
John Oliver: Dragon money mothafuckas
HBO Lawyer: What is John covering this week?
Producer: The Sackler Family
HBO Lawyer picks up phone: Yea Betty, let HR known we need to hire 10 more lawyers. We're going to get sued again.
@@tmuckian29 Remember AT&T is now corporate daddy
Janet from accounting dont give a fuck about them lawyer bills
This man is trying his level best to be sued by every major corporation on Earth and I am HERE FOR IT
Yeah he probably gives the people at HBO headaches and they probably have to have lawyers staining buy
I'm 99% certain that trying to get sued by major corporations and powerful people is conditioned into all daily show correspondents
Well the big advantage of living in America is that basically every judge will end a lawsuit with something like "freedom of speech, bye"...
Can't sue for libel if what someone's saying is true: it'll all come out in discovery, and then it goes onto legal record.
@@patrikburda Same with all of the western world really, here in sweden our equivalent (Svenska nyheter) got in some beef with the swedish state dept. and they said "We have freedom of speech in sweden".
Knowing that Michael Keaton is playing a role in Dopesick right now makes him reading for Richard Sackler utterly surreal.
was hunting for exactly this comment; it's incredible
i saw hes listed as a producer too in the credits
Richard Sackler’s lawyers sent a letter to the actor who ended up portraying him. Too bad DopeSick’s corporate Daddy is Disney so they have big legal dept. too.
Danny Strong probably saw this performance and went 'Hey! I got an idea!'
He is amazing. Some of the best acting I have ever scene.
Michael Keaton went full circle from playing Richard Sackler on a skit to playing a doctor in a series about the Opioid Crisis.
Michael Keaton plays great addict roles. Ever see him in Clean & Sober?
The only difference between Richard Sackler and Pablo Escobar is that Escobar didn't have FDA approval.
Richard Sackler also imported fewer hippos than Pablo Escobar.
@jack Maher He didn't need hitmen, if he had the FDA approval !!! he could've owned hundreds of Art galleries and launder money through them as the sacklers do and never have to plant bombs or use hitmen ever again !!!
@jack Maher Escobar was responsible for about 4000 deaths. A lot, to be sure. Richard Sackler is responsible for more than 112× as many (almost 450,000 people dead from the opioid crisis he engineered between 1999 and 2018, and between 50,000 and 100,000 more since). You're right, it's not a fair comparison. To Pablo fucking Escobar.
You forgot the "whiteness factor".
@@letitiajeavons6333 He could have imported a fucking dinosaur and we wouldn’t know
Another example of how 1. Unregulated capitalism literally kills people, and 2. When the punishment is a fine, that just means it’s legal for rich people.
Could make the fine %-tage based on revenue. That way rich people get punished monetarily the same. But I get what you mean.
@@FogToo Love this idea but I can't help but think the rich will claim "discrimination". Is that a thing? Income level (or whatever) discrimination? Not via the gov't right? Sorry, just curious as to how to make this idea work.
FDA approved drug prescribed by AMA approved doctors... Capitalist was the only one doing his job in this story.
@@vaclavmarak4456 yeah, that's the point. If a Capitalist does his job he WILL cause deaths

Rip Michael K Williams, you will be missed. Your amazing acting will be remembered for years to come
And here is the damn irony of it all. The actor known for “The Wire,” who was found dead in his apartment earlier this month, died of intoxication by a mixture of heroin, cocaine and fentanyl. He had been open about his struggle with addiction.
@@henryvaneyk3769 Makes you wonder if his last movies triggered him. Body brokers. He was great in it tho

I imagine his role in this episode was more personal than many would initially have guessed.
We should start calling it „The Sackler Crisis“. That would put their name on things
@Dub Davis I literally thought the same thing... How would they like to have their name on that I ask myself :D
It would, but I think it might also minimize the role of other companies/participants
Hear hear!

If anyone is wondering why these people donate to art institutes, it's a scheme called "venture philanthropy" that allows them to write off their donations on their taxes while also buying art pieces that appreciate in value
Money Laundery everyone!
Right, but the write-off is not 100% ist it? At the end of the day, they are still "losing" money by doing these transactions, however not as much as they seem to be giving to the art institutes. I just know how it works in France, so some more enlightenment could be helpful
@@PappyMandarine from what I've gathered it is essentially 100% in the US
@@teddy-1965 I would be very surprised if it's 100%. That means that they virtually can transform 100% of the taxes they have to pay into donations. And we all know that donations are not completely lost money, often these donations enable to make advertisement and brand promoting (as shown in the video), so any donation really is bringing some benefits back to the "benefactor". In this case, every company in the US, instead of simply "losing" money that they pay as taxes, would be donating and therefore converting some of that costs into benefits. It would be ridiculous and the state would go bankrupt pretty soon. Of course there should be limitations regarding the volume of these donations, but still, it would be a massive loss for the almighty state.
That doesn't make sense. You can't write off a donation if you've received something in exchange. Then it's a donation with a gift or essentially a purchase.
I have 15 months clean by the grace of god 🙏

congrats, truly an admirable feat for all who maintained throughout the quarantine. Unfortunately, I was not able to. Quarantine lead to isolation and then flushed 4 years down the drain. *Context*
Opioid overdose deaths in 2017: 47000
Total US military casualties in the Vietnam War: 58000
The Vietnam War that lasted almost 20 years I might add...
In fact the average per-year casualties of *all* involved war parties combined is just under 75,000, just over 1.5x as many....

Dear USA,
This is why you don't trust the market to fully regulate itself.
Sincerely,
the world
what do you mean? The drug market currently IS heavily regulated and it hasn't prevented this crisis.
@@thehalvening8942 Well yeah it's regulated but the pharmaceutical industry has a lot of seats at the tables where those regulations get set, either directly or bought, hence 'regulate itself'
Justin Don’t blame us- we agree with you & we’re majorly victims as well. I’m face we’re the main victims. 😓
@@Justin-ib2iz well they should have a seat but yeah I agree they shouldn't have all the seats. That said, I think the issue is more of liability issue than a regulation issue. The drug companies and doctors aren't being held criminally liable for the damage they're causing to people. I'm for better regulation though if that will help. But when like you said they have all the seats at the regulation table, asking for more regulation probably won't do anything.
Here we see the rare respectful RUclips argument. This may occur only once on every 4 years

Matt i figure they see this as charitable to mankind
Those actors typically have a minimum appearance rate of $100,000 per hour. What they do is when they want to contribute "for free" is to donate the said amount to NPO's such as actor schools, children charities etc. Every of these individuals is linked to more than one charity (use the search engine, I was amazed at how many The Batman was involved with). My comment is not theoretical btw, we did this multiple times.
They probably dont ask for much, they tend to have quick moments of fun rather than long acts done over and over. Plus its for a good cause, and many of them would be willing to take even less for it.
@@themadmystic1688 its incredible publicity to expose big pharma for nothing more than well funded drug dealers. They would love to jump at this. Update: My usually useless state, Oklahoma, won their lawsuits against Purdue, Teva, and Johnson & Johnson, and literally pushed Purdue into bankruptcy after they lost and other states were filing suits against them too.
40 states I believe have filed similar suits against Big Pharma companies.
Purdue has to pay our state $270 million, Teva has to pay $85 million, and J&J has to pay $572 million from these lawsuits.
Purdue if you don’t know practically kicked off the opioid epidemic by pushing OxyContin for everything, giving doctors who prescribed more of it kickbacks like paid “pharmaceutical conferences” that were really just free vacations for their good little doctors who prescribed a lot.
Now the Sackler Family who owned Purdue, even though the company is in chapter 11 bankruptcy, has coughed up $175 million so far but the family itself still owes OK $75 million.
*We are coming for you Big Pharma*
This is incredible!
It just works huh?
As an fyi....your "usually useless state" has also left thousands of legitimate patients without medication that they need to survive. Chronic pain sufferers are truly suffering as a result.

My dad got addicted to opioids. It made him just like... check out of life, it seemed like. He went to work, he'd come home and just not care about anything. He seemed like he didn't care much about the emotions of anyone in the house. He was also irrational at times. All of that nearly destroyed the relationship I had with my dad. He's several years clean now, he's losing weight and has more care and enthusiasm for the people around him. I honestly thought I'd never know my dad again, and now we get together and have dinner a couple times a month. He wasn't there when I needed him as a kid and that hurt a lot, but I've forgiven him too because I won't be weighed down by those feelings. He's by no means perfect, but I can see he's really trying now and that means a lot.
My dad wasn't an addict but I can relate to your situation. He just went to work and came back with out saying a word, he showed zero interest in getting to know his children or spending them with them. I think most of it was because of his childhood traumas which led him to unable to show any kind of affection. I just feel bad for him because he doesn't realize that all of those traumas, nearly died of food poisoning bacause of poverty, watching his sister get sent off to be somebody's bride at the age of 14, getting beat up everyday, were traumas. He just laughs at them and thinks that things like that were just a little rough because of the poverty.
@@HaTran-sp7pf wow, that's rough
Sorry to hear that
Wish you and your family all the best
bro just know that while he was in active addiction he wasn't really himself. Addiction is so devious it steals who a person is and takes their ability to see and understand what its doing to others. despite the way it felt or feels it was never about not loving or wanting to be there for you.
goddamn. my eyes actually teared up. my dad checked out of my life pretty early as well and im struggling to meet him halfway now that he’s trying to be in my life again. your comment really hit a chord in me. im happy that your relationship with your dad has recovered and that he’s clean now. best wishes to you and your family, from a stranger to another. x
R.I.P. Michael K. Williams
I miss that really intense laughing lady... opioid related late night show just doesn’t hit the same
Absolutely. One of the main issues would certainly be lobbying, the irrationally legal form of pure bribery; buying our politicans and lawmakers.
Ritalin is the number one solution for all addiction except porn addiction
I always hate when Zazu has a bad morning report... 😂
I love the actors he picked, Michael Keaton is absolutely amazing.
Gina He gets better all the time!
Michael Keaton is the best batman, and an overall amazing actor. Byan Cranston was also an amazing choice
watching this again after the passing of Michael K Williams...rip legend
What’s funny is that Michael Keaton is playing a main character on Hulu’s dope sick, about this very subject.
When one of the greatest forces for justice is an HBO comedian.. what a time to be alive.
I agree! John is a powerful force.
Opioids II: Electric Boogaloo
Opioids III: revenge of the meth
Opioids II: The Opioning
???
Where did that come from again?
Courage Karnga
First place I saw it was in an episode of Always Sunny
I love how he's (his team) able to get all these actors to come in and play on his show. One of my fav parts of the show!
Dude! You can't get Michael effing Keaton for this, not only is he way to good looking to play Sackler, he's also making those horrible lines sound kind of badass.
Letting companies regulate themselves without government intervention is working reeeeeeaaaal good in every industry :)
Oh USA, you'll never cease to amaze me
Even the airplanes, quite frightening.
USA is fucking shithole
check out the news papers in the UK.
Basically why we're dealing with Brexit
Volkswagen Germany, coughs
The stupid half of America will call you a communist or socialist if you advocate for any type of Government oversight or regulation. It's kind of sad how they are brainwashed against their own best interests.
The real inclusivity of this show is the graphics producer made the self-pleasuring janitor left-handed.
Or...
Joshua Sweetvale he’s giving himself the stranger which is numbing your non-master bating Hand and jizzing on a Jackson Pollack
I'd like your comment, but it's got 69 likes right now and that's too perfect.
Richard Kind is a delightful mix of Jim Carry and Gerard depardieu
What some don't know is that a video of Sackler's deposition interview came out just months after this piece aired.
No Richard Kind eating a turkey sandwich?
John, you've robbed us.
He robbed us when he didn't get the actor who plays Escobar from Narcos to pop in.
Kudos to LWT's marvelous research team. Also, John Oliver, please stay safe. Picking fights with the most powerful and corrupt every week, goddamn.
Fun how Micheal Keaton was playing Richard Sackler here but is now playing the doc in Dopesick!
Anyone here after Michael K. Williams passing?
Opioids II: Sackler Boogaloo sounds a lot more fun then this actually is
That was a Five Star comment
John Oliver got Batman, Heisenberg, Omar, and the guy from Spin City to play a single role. Damn, I love HBO!
When they call WV “Almost Heaven,” they literally mean the closest place to heaven on earth you can get bc everyone’s already half dead on opioids :^) love livin here, Mountain Mama
Girl! Stay strong
Man the lightning and music when they were having actors play Richard Sackler was amazing.
It's amazing how much Michael Keaton can do with just a few lines of dialogue. Holy shit.
I'm going to assume that parties at the Sacklers always start and end with a toast: "To Human Misery!"
Cheers! To human suffering, let it never happen to us.
Where’s Mcbain when we need him?
Well they probably start like that, but end in a lot of snorting noises.
@@rza68 nobody thinks they are the villian
"Now, we begin the ritual blood sacrifice of a poor Appalachian child before moving on to the event of the evening. The hunt of a family of 5 saddled with medical debt."
coming across this video today with the Nancy Regan and mr T in the beginning is hysterical, based on today's Twitter's reveal 😭
I thinks it's funny they got Michael Keaton for this, especially now, since he is the series Dopesick, a series about the flipping opioid epidemic!
Richard Sackler deserves to be in prison far more than half the people in our prison systems.
What is he guilty of? They couldn't sell all those pills unless doctors wrote the prescriptions.
