I had my first parent teacher conference this week and had a parent have a full argument right in front of me. Every thing about this child’s choices with me made sense. 😂
You are simply a breath of fresh oxygenated sparkles! Hallelujah for you're presence in the classroom and for sharing your beautiful showing- upness consistently for us to run with too.
As a mom of 2 adult children and an 8 year old, I admire and appreciate your classroom management. While this method would not work with my autistic, high anxiety 8 year old (no eye contact and too confrontational and demanding for him), I still love the core concept of not engaging in an argument. This has been my biggest parenting win with all my kids. Keep up the great work! I know parents appreciate you!
I love love love this! You cannot win an arguement with children. You have things to do,they have all the time. They will win every single time. Choosing not to engage, leaving the situation till things calm down, and being consistent can make the difference between professionalism and a career end. Thanks for sharing. There is always something new to learn here💜
OMG. So glad I came across this video, lol! I’ve definitely been arguing with kids the last few days and it’s been throwing the peace/vibration off within my classroom as well as myself. That’s not my style and I hate that I let it go there after only one month in school. 😢 My middle schoolers’ biggest problem is that they think everything is negotiable. “Oh, I’m doing work, so it’s okay if I talk” (usually celeb gossip, other classmates in a negative way, etc 🙄) I’m gonna try this and see how it works. Thanks!
SPEAK TRUTH MS. MAY! Wow, this is so right on time video. The 'come back' is REAL with students now. You're so right the TONE is everything. Consistency is truly key 🔑. Thanks 😊. I am going to share this video with my colleagues. Thanks again.
WALK away and ignore. The more you try and talk and argue, the worse it will become. Kids with these behaviors are HARD to ignore, but the more you ignore and they realize you won't feed into that behavior the better. ((HUGS))
Hi Miss May! I'm a 2nd year teacher from the UK. I was just wondering at what points during the year you teach your kids all of your rules and expectations? I find it a struggle to squeeze in so much in so little time. Thank you for your helpful videos :) I wish I'd seen this one last year - could've saved me a lot of arguments and hot-headedness (on my part).
She has some other videos that show how she does this on the FIRST DAY of school. She emphasizes that you start out the year with clear expectations and guidelines. Have the students role-play what is expected. That sets the tone for the entire year.
I would love a copy of that card! Do you know where we could find it? Thank you so much for all you share! Your videos have inspired me so much! As I’m teaching I keep your words of wisdom in my head. Thanks for being such a Godly role model!!
Ms. May I have been binge watching your channel for the last couple of days. Where can I find the cards that you are using. I know that they will work!!!!
One thing about this young generation is that they’re so sensitive and sentimental. They tend to put their feelings first before common sense and as educators we have to build relationships. It’s not like back then when we automatically had authority in the classroom simply for being teachers. We now have to accommodate to kid’s needs and build a relationship that will take at least 2 solid months for our classrooms to run smoothly yet if kids would be respectful on the very first day keeping their hands and rude comments to themselves, teachers could start teaching and get kids to where they’re supposed to be. Always keeping in mind that we are in this profession for the kids and that they should be respected, but we cannot tolerate misbehaviors and give kids candy or rewards for doing what is expected of them in the first place. I can’t stand when principals send kids back with chips and candy after messing up a whole classroom! I truly hope that God gives all educators wisdom to know how to handle such situations. ❤🙏🏽
Good morning, Miss May! As always I love your videos! I feel like I have decent classroom management, but I am terrible with consistency because my memory is so bad. I’ve gotten better over the years, but there’s still room for improvement. My biggest issue is if I walk away from a student and say I will talk with them later, I often forget to go back and deal with it. That’s not very helpful for me or the student. Do you just have an excellent memory or do you have a system for remembering to go back and talk to students? 😉 This is my 17th year of teaching and I have always taught in a combo class. That presents challenges in and of itself, but I do definitely agree that children have changed a lot in the last 17+ years. Thanks for all you do and all your wonderful advice!
1st grade If you have a positive and genuine relationship with them, I bet they would. I have friends who are middle school teachers have done something similar and it's worked. Don't knock until you try it. ((Hugs))
If you have a student who will not make eye contact and is hard to transition, (example: time to go to recess, but they want to keep coloring, or reading a book...) what do you do? I teach Pre-K, so my kids are a bit younger. This student will flat out tell me, "I am not going to do _____." Will also not make eye contact. They have had lots of trips to the office in the last 4 weeks. I was getting hit on the 3rd day of school and dodging chairs. Not fun!
Thank you for the video! I teach High School Spanish and I'm trying to figure out how to modify this technique for my students. Have a fantastic year!!! P.s.- I ❤️❤️❤️ your sweatshirt and vibes 🙂
