Same thing just happened to my 2 year old Hobie Compass. Thanks for posting this. The stress crack just appeared and in the same place along the scupper column as yours did. Can't think of a thing that I've done but peddling the boat.
Hey all you kayak anglers: Carry a bilge pump every time you're out on the water, period. This could happen to you in a bigger body of water/ in bad weather. The loss of stability with all that water in the hull could be fatal!! Also the new Outbacks are shit...don't buy them. I've heard a lot of complaints particularly serious leaks in the front hatch. Hobies have gotten so outrageously expensive and yet there are issues like this... It might be actually safer (and definitely cheaper) to buy an older used Hobie! I have a 2011 Adventure that is still going strong. I had a drivewell crack but patched it up inside and out with a lot of G-flex epoxy and fiberglass (highly recommended). Bone dry ever since. And yes I always carry a bilge pump.
That really sucks and I'm sorry this happened to you. It seems Hobie is not getting a lot of good news lately. I have a 2015 Outback with no issues. Love the boat. I've never used a cart in the scuppers (I suspect that) not because I knew something, just by chance I guess. Please keep us advised how this turns out.
That happened to me in the Port Jefferson sound going after fluke and porgies. Had a long crack in rear hull. Luckily I was with a buddy as well. It's the weirdest feeling when the hull fills up, the stability is completely off and then you realize the water level rising on the sides of the kayak. Happy you made it back safely.
This sucks but im glad your ok. I had a crack form while in LIS, my family and i were in a 18 foot fiberglass boat. You fill up quick and its pretty nerve racking. Always check around your scuppers!!! Keep up the great videos.

Generally pre heating and pre coating of scupper inserts prior to final rotational moulding will reduce stress cracking and thin walled perforation in the scupper holes.This is a very common problem ,particularly on low end kayak manufacturers and given the kayak experiences serious flexing of deck hull and scupper I would definately call warranty.I would suggest you will almost certainly expect a replacement.Cheers.

Sorry to see you having this kind of trouble just before heading to Fla. but my guess is if Hobie doesn't do right by you Three Belles will. I wanted to get out for some blackfishing today but the weather here in NJ, wind and snow, put the screws to that. I am thinking between the weather and watching this video it' time to turn my 2018 Outback over cover it with a tarp and just hit the party boats until it gets warm again. My Ocean Kayak Ultra 4.3 New Zealand 2011 model came with a pinhole leak by the scupper hole corner. They sent me a repair kit and I fixed it. Seems like they join the two halves and weld it there for my model and it wasn’t done perfect. Haven’t had any issues since. I never liked the idea of using a cart that goes through the scupper. I have the C-Tug with the new flex wheel upgrade. Works great on sand.
Glad you are home safe, with your gear. Try fishing Banks Channel along the piers, good water flow there and normally can catch a few Specs to size in there because of the vicinity of the Inlet. Stay Safe and Fish On!!
Feels off "liking" this video. Very interested to see how Hobie responds. I have a couple of very simple kayaks and have been considering upgrading to a more serious type with a propulsion system. Not sure Hobie is worth the extra money. Seems like the mirage drive is always breaking down, and if there are hull issues now...I'm just glad to see you made it back safely.
Very glad you werren't 3 miles out to sea fishing, or this could have had a much less happy ending! Glad you are ok, and you are right - if you are fishing in very light boats like a kayak or canoe, having a friend along is a very good idea.
For the future Elias.. consider installing a Hobie Mirage Peddle Drive to a really good unsinkable bilge pump and go fishing.... later on you may want to add a really great looking Yellow Kayak to the bilge and drive system.... That sucks man. I've had a 2011 outback since new and use the scupper cart everytime and I'm starting to think I've been very lucky. I really need an upgrade but I hate the nose design of the 2019 and I'm seeing too many failures on the new drives.
Not saying it is or isn't a manufacturing defect, but it is a sign of undue repeated stress in that location. The discoloration along the edges of the crack is an indication of stress fatigue. Probably caused by: 1) using repeated excessive force while carting the yak, 2) repeatedly using the scupper as an anchoring point with a stake out pole, 3) repeatedly placing and removing excessive weight on top of the scupper, 4) a combination of all these factors in cold climate. And yes I do have a degree in materials science and manufacturing.
Yeah Elias, you are probably right. Hobie will claim that the crack in the drain hole area of your yak is caused by you using a yak cart and moving over rough ground causing "undo stress and premature wear of said region of your kayak, thereby voiding the warranty" A whole lotta Hobie B.S. for not backing their product, and quality control slipping. That doesn't look like an easy do it yourself fix either judging by the location and size of the split. It sucks, I hope everything works out for you and Hobie does the repairs, or at least covers the cost of the repairs.
Maybe water got in between that plastic thing and the actual hull and froze just an idea but probably the hobie cart did it I use boonedox landing gear not just for the ease of use but I never liked the carts I bought one with my first hobie and it was always a pain to use and it damaged my pro angler first day out rubbing on the tires plus u can just tell it puts a lot of stress on the scuppers

I know some guys put pool noodles/empty bottles in their kayak so if it fills it won’t sink. What did Elias ever decide about the Center console boat anyway
Pool noodles/bottle aren't going to fill up enough volume to prevent your water logged kayak from turning into a rolling log on the water. Furthermore I've read in a few places and have had a TON of water in my Hobie before to know that the hull most likely will not sink. The more immediate concern is staying upright. DAMHIK A much better way to go is to fill the hull with inflatable bags. There are kayak specific ones that are a bit pricey but I'm sure there is a DIY or cheaper alternative. The bags fill the volume much more effectively in case of water intrusion

I had the exact problem this fluke season 3 miles from launch area in the manasquan inlet caused by the welds breaking on the hobie heavy duty cart spreading taking on major water in a Hobie Pro Angler had to do an emergency launch at Fisherman's Supply authorized Hobie dealer
really even Gorilla duct tape will fail after a few uses BUT maybe if there is a waterproof duct tape,, I don't know,, and/ or what about using flex -seal in conjunction with Gorilla tape I have never used Flex -seal but they promise that it is waterproof,,,just my idea
I’m a structural engineer and that looks like a stress crack from buckling. That is, those scupper tubes are like columns in a building and if it’s too thin for a person’s weight, it will buckle, deform, and crack. I’ll have to check my hobie to see if it has the same design. The most load for those scuppers is if a person sits on the kayak near the scuppers and is still on land or shallow water and the weight is forced directly thru the scupper as opposed to widely distributed throughout the boat hull when it is in water.

You can fix that. You won't be able to use that type of cart anymore. In order not to lose the drain ability of the Scupper hole, use a smaller piece of PVC pipe that will become your new Scupper hole. Place it in the middle and fill the void around it in around the Scupper hole with hot resin.
Saw a good video of Zoffinger doing something similar with one of his Pelican bass boats. Not a bad idea, but the scupper hole area on the outback might be ab it tricky to perform such a trick.

If it was anything but a hobie I'd say the cart is 100% the issue but hobbies have reinforced suppers. If I were you I'd look into a cart that sit underneath the hull instead of thru the suppers. May help in the long run. Ctug has a good one

And all the equipments putting on too much weight on those tubes. Cold weather doesn’t help either. I suggest hobie makes the hole smaller leaving less room for the cart to wiggle around and/or reinforce that area and make it a little thicker.
for sure , scupper cart loads are the most concentrated loads=highest stress a non whitewater kayak will ever see. Water loads are so dispersed the stress is MUCH lower. Cracks like this , will almost always open up before launching and not initiate once on the water....so it's most important to check for leaks soon after launching...if no leaks then ,unlikely to have any later (on that same trip).

I have a 2019 Outback with the identical problem. My buddy had the same issue with his. Neither one of our boats was ever on a scupper cart.

Looks like weight/ pressure has caused that tube to expand and rupture. If the manufacturer won’t cough up it looks fixable.

Not a big fan of scupper carts. Even with reinforcements HDPE gives out over time under consistent flexing.

I was going to get them one this year l think l will keep my 2012 out back no problem yet.

Hobies have 2 year warranty, so no worries on getting your kayak fixed or replaced. Tho it sure ruined your fishing trip that day.
