    It hurt me to watch an Outback cut in half lol, but great to see the inner-workings of a Hobie.

    Excellent video... Kudos for making this. I thought I had a pretty good understanding of the construction of my kayak. I've watched I think every factory tour video, but this is an angle I've never seen!

    Man, you killed that hull! That is an easy fix no doubt. Plastic epoxy for the crack (clamp it closed with a butt ton of greased up hose clamps, so they won’t stick) allow it to cure, then remove the clamps, reinforced with PVC pipe that’s cut in half (heated and moulded to size of the unaffected scupper transition). Score it all up with 50-60 grit sandpaper, blast it with high pressure compressed air, wipe clean with acetone, heavily apply MARINE or POOL grade silicone caulk all around the scupper tube, do the exact same on the inside of the PVC halves; ensure a consistent even coat with the silicone, and slap that PVC in place. Then tighten it all down with as many hose clamps ya can get on the length of the scupper, and tighten each clamp evenly, much like tightening up a vehicle’s wheel lugs. Don’t over tighten, as it will squeeze all the silicone out. On the outside of the hull, score the it with 50-60 grit sandpaper, blast it with compressed air (air compressor), wipe area clean with acetone gingerly heat the hull and at the same time ready some melted HDPE plastic (ya can melt a 5 gallon bucket, but the stuff is everywhere pretty much for free), drip it into the crack and agitate it in there with a smaller jeweler’s flathead screwdriver. Allow it to cool to room temp, sand it down, again blast it with air, acetone, and apply bout 2-3mm thick of HDPE again. Score up the inside of the scupper tube with sandpaper, blast, acetone, and liberally coat with the above mentioned silicone. Apply a good coat of silicone caulk inside to the outside of the scupper, covering all the work. Since ya gonna have a grip load of this silicone left, go back to the inside of the yak and give a nice big ol’ coat of that silicone all around the PVC to the top of the hull down to the bottom (remember to score everything up with sandpaper, air, acetone).
    If your yak leaks after that…. It ain’t from that area fo sho!
    This is for y’all who are out of warranty and feel it’s hopeless, NO SO, you got this!!!

    Great video to see exactly how the insides are, the crease where the crack is could also have been caused after the crack.

    Not to be redundant with my questions but….is there a better made boat value? I was going to buy one this summer. How can I avoid theses cracks coming about and the unsealed screws that may soak up moisture. Specifically, what would you do, buy another brand or modify and take steps to avoid cracks. I’m rough on things.

  • @nikushim6665
    @nikushim6665 Год назад +3

    The scupper crack seems to be a common issue with the the 21's and 22's. Not just with Outback, seen people have the exact same problem with PA's as well. I don't really think its a car top strap problem, people have had the issue using yak trailers. Hobie seems to think its a cart issue, at least they use that as a excuse to avoid warranty claims (if said person didn't have a hobie brand cart.)

      I still can't see any justification for Hobie's inflated prices!!

    • @nikushim6665
      @nikushim6665 11 месяцев назад

      @@johnguth5376 They have been getting worse every year. Think the kayaks are bad look at the insane pricing they have on accessories and replacement parts..... 200 bucks for a 20 dollar square hatch for example. Really they are just trying to milk as much as they can out of the Mirage patents before they all expire.

    So what's Hobie's policy if the scupper holes split - Is it a like for like replacement?
    Great video though - really informative and something completely different from the others.

    Same thing happened to my 2022 Outback, cracks at the same area but on both scupper area. Almost sunk in the middle an inlet. Only used it a few times and can’t understand how this happened to such an expensive kayak.

    So the 2019 have seat rest issue and the 2022 have scupper issue. Wow. I warranty my 2019 and got a 2022. Took my 22 out for her maiden voyage and found a hole in the scupper from factory. My 22 have the new rod holder tho. Looks like hobie need to add more plastic

    So how would you reinforce one area(in terms of plastic thickness) more than another in a kayak roto mold? Seems like every area should have the same thickness.

    nothing to it.Why is the hobie outback so very expensive,it's not the best kayak on the market,there are a lot of good kayak on the market just as good or even better.

    • @atamagashock
      @atamagashock Год назад +2

      Curious what kayaks you believe are better than the Hobie outback or PA 12/14? I’m not gonna say there isn’t, but Hobie are the best of the best imo as far as fishing kayaks go
