So I've a tandem I bought one night....thought it was a hell of a deal back at the start of the pandemic. Turns out the whole tail end you could penetrate with your fingers it was so weak. Well, melted lowe's buckets and all.....I wanted to step up my game. Fiberglassing has always been something I've wanted to dabble in. But these patches after hearing you explain them sound almost a better solution. I can't wait to get a few of these ordered and swap out my field kit too. Thanks for this vid sir!
This seems to be a very common issue with older Hobies but very few videos on how to repair, I am going to give the gator patch a try, I also plan to attack the crack from the inside with backing soda and CA glue, between the two that area should be bulletproof when I am done, thanks for the video
I've added a gator guard on my front keel, from an earlier video you did. Works great. Have a small one just in case. At $1 a square inch, it is kinda expensive. But it works well.
I just ordered some Gator Guard Patches! It’s funny how on their packaging it says to not use on polypropylene, but your video proves that it works just fine!
Great video although I always cut corners round, eliminating potential peal points. I bought a cracked white water kayak yesterday for $1. I removed silicone and poly gutter stuff 'repair'. I drilled holes at crack terminals (a la Liberty Bell) and a few more to wire and draw in expanded cracks. I explored several plastics before deciding on kitty litter type bucket and with soldering iron and hot air gun found that the plastic readily mingled with the kayak plastic. When done I tried to break it with a few heavy handed thumps and it was absolutely solid. I removed draw wired and plugged small holes with same. I hadn't explored RUclips until after and was pleased to find that my approach was sound enough bit will order a plastic welder. ... or maybe just fabricate a 'shoe' for one of my soldering irons and us bits of an old teflon baking pan for smoothing melded plastics. I'm going to overlay the wear prone areas of keel with bucket or drum plastic overlays.... Rounding any errant corners no doubt. Again, great video!
High expansion foam to fill big holes, sand to shape, then take to a lineX dealer and just bed line it with high end poly bed liner. Fixed for years. lol
I tried using expansion foam on my plastic kayak. It doesn't flex with the kayak which resulted in water seeping in and finding voids. I ended up ripping the foam out.
Would love an update. Is the kayak still holding up? I'm planning to do a big project repair on a buddies Old Town Autopilot that he gave me. He was going to throw it away but I asked him to let me try and salvage the kayak. I was wondering if your repair is still holding up and not leaking water.
just repaired my buddies kayak that he attempted to melt plastic into earlier today, was a pain in the butt to clean up but got it done and well sealed, pretty happy with my repair but you're absolutely right, it's terrible trying to fix a sketchy patch job
Hobie outback are notorious for cracking there... the stress of the mirage drive from peddling causes the it to crack. Even after repairing it it will crack again. Curious to how this gator patch holds.
LoL - you called it - hot plastic does not seal against cooler plastic !! It’s almost like lead solder dropped onto a cooler metal surface. That gator guard is good but way too expensive! I’m looking for keel guard but don’t want to blow that much cash on such a small sheet. Great video - thank you, sir!!
Nate Marling makes AMAZING baits.!!! I got the stickers you sent, Once again I want to say thanks for doing the Giveaway..!!! that looks like a solid patch I need to grab some of that stuff to throw in the front hatch for emergencies, that's a good idea..!!!
I don’t know if this might work in helping, it’s a tire stitching tool,Amazon sells a pair one wider than the other for $17.00 . It might help roll the gator patch out. I really enjoyed the video. Bye the way can you give me an estimate on a repair ? Lol . That could be a whole new business for you. Thank you.
Watched your video, you recommended Gator Patch, so I ordered 2 packs, I got it and it SAS right on label cannot be used with polypropylene! It says it twice on package, why would you put this out as a product you should use on kayak repairs by gator patch won't bond to the material?
Probably because rotomolded kayaks like Hobie and Jackson are polyethylene. Blow molded kayaks are polypropylene. Not every kayak is made the same and from the same materials. The stuff he is talking about is for polyethylene.
Really informative video. Glad I found this. Question on that old black sealant tape. Could you have used a heat gun to loosen it and saved on the sanding? Really curious as to what the prior people used to try to fix it. Definitely will pick up some gator patches!!
Like you mentioned, you can use plastic. I’ve seen guys add a rear round hatch, and use the kayaks plastic to fix the hole or cracks. I know this kayak already has a rear hatch, but that’s one way. Also thought you’d test the kayak in your pond! How is that pond doing anyway? I haven’t seen any updates about it. 🤔 😅🤙🏽

Just found your video and am in the process of watching it, not through with it yet. Yes, I'm impatient (LOL). Will the gator patch work (adhere well) on RAM X material that Coleman Scanoe and Crawdad boats are made from?
You do know you can buy a uv led light instead of the Acrylic nail curing lights.... I mean there are much better solutions. Amazon, uv led lights.... thats it.
I blame it on Hobie! They cheap out on their plastic. Too bad they have the best design for pedal drives on a kayak. They sure price them like they know they have the best designs, too!
Starts the repair at 5 minutes 56 seconds into the video.
Thank you.
Yeah. I noticed that , too.

Another excellent one. I’m getting some patches to back up the repair I made using your heat gun method-this looks easier!

Folgers coffee cans are the same plastic as kayaks they work great for patch jobs also
Neat & organized. I have 3 kayaks,, so repair knowledge is appreciated.

I used Gator Guard unsuccessfully in the past and used melted plastic (from Ocean Kayak) to repair. After seeing this, I would try Gator Guard again.

@@Njennings42 Nice going! Some of the materials they use on these kayaks is really tough to patch or mend.

Love watching your videos, very informative. When I'm not sure I can re-watch it ✌️🏞
Awesome! Thank you! I’m glad I can help you out!!

Would this work on Ram X that's on Coleman scanoes
I used to fix them with a propane torch and milk jugs years ago .

Where did you get the materials to do the rod tubes on the camping trailer?

I’m really not sure what the black stuff was but it wouldn’t come off easily. That’s why I just sanded and patched over it. Thanks 🤙🏼
I have a puncture from an anchor in the bottom of my Jackson Coosa. Will this work just right on top of the hole. It’s about the size of a dime.
So, did this repair hold? Did the kayak leak after that?
