“The whole reason why I play is for God”. It’s always beautiful to see someone who's walking in their purpose. Thank you for your music, Roy.
TMK amen.
I do not care if he used drugs, we know little of what folks go through, how they feel about life. He gave us some of the best music of a generation which will live on into eternity! Remember boys and girls, life can be pretty crappy. I will pour a little bourbon in his honor and listen to his work. Damn, gone too soon!!!!!
Exactly! What Roy contributed to music the short time he was on this planet is far more important than any asterisk people try to put on his legacy. RIH
Hey my friend, is it safe to say that I agree with you on that note.. Damn R.I.P Mr. Hargrove.
monica adams agreed, I was not impacted by Roy's personal decisions, but my life was definitely positively impacted by his musical output.
Hey Monica what a pathetic response to a addicted persons death (pour out a bourbon) grow up and learn something about this insidious disease
@@davidlakeman9063 you need to grow up and learn how to disagree with someone without insulting them.
Roy Hargrove was sick, if the drugs were an issue he was suffering from a serious illness let him rest in peace he was a great musician and an inspiration to many people.
thanks for saying this. all the negative comments come from people who will never get close to his level of greatness.
Got that right. Roy had kidney problems man. That is a hell of a condition to have.
@@miquifaye I agree with you 100% Anthony. Haters never win and players never lose. Roy was a true player. God bless Roy Hargrove and what he left us.
Omg I just seen this wow Hell of a player wow RIH
He got off them by 2017 but the kidney disease and complications from it persisted. He dealt with those since 2002.
RIP..ROY HARGROVE....HIS MUSIC LIVES ON...
Later for the, judgement and you can be addicted to anything. He was a great artist and trumpet player. Celebrate his music and who he was. One of the baddest trumpet players I have ever heard. At 61 years old I have listened to a lot of jazz from age 15 on. Roy had that special sound and tone that was all his. Genius and humility. That was Roy Hargrove. Amen. Rest in power my brother.
This man was a musical genius.... Really sad that he's gone at 49...... Thank you for your music Roy, it changed my life!!! Rest in peace my brother...
I miss Roy, he had a unique sound and left us all too soon. So sad he’s gone.
I was together with someone about 20 years ago who had claimed she brief affair with Roy Hargrove. She was a Jazz Swiss singer. He apparently would constantly be either practicing, composing or performing.
I got to play in a jam session with Roy in Monterey after the concerts and also visiting with him just before he left the hotel to fly home!
at the Hyatt Regency in Monterey...September 2017
RIP ROY HARGROVE...I first met Roy back in the late 1990s, at the Town Hall in Times Square Manhatten...He and drummer Willie Jones were jamming hard and intense...Willie was kicking that bass drum pedal so hard, the mallot stem snapped in half during the set...Myself being a fellow drummer, found it to be hilarious!!! Any way Roy you left a musical chart for all musicians to study...And although you are no longer physically among us..Your music will live on forever...RIP...."THE UNIVERSE IS MOVING RIGHT IN LINE WITH US"...RH Factor # 2....
Thank you Roy for being that inspiration while I sat on that chair for 12 hours a week listening to your music little to I know you where in the same boat, I had the honour to see you at the Cape Town Jazz Festival, cutting short my dialysis that Saturday, afternoon and you made it worth it, I was on that chair for 10 years and had my transplant in 2011.When you passed in 2018 I was shocked and the news that you were in Renal failure, not knowing my kidneys suddenly rejected in 2019, I am back on that machine since 2020 but guess what I don't fear it cos I have you brother to listen and inspire me give me hope and make that 4 hours pass so quick like you did for 10 years ago last time, so keep blowing that sweet sound brother Roy we all still need your inspiration, calmness, happiness and love.RIP my Brother
I saw this interview a year ago..now he's gone just like that. Iam stunned, i did not know he was suffering from kidney problems for so long. Why do all the great ones leave so early? I think because they are extraordinarily sensitive and serious about their art..It must be a heavy weight to carry. Booker Little left early because of uremia. Rest in peace Roy you left us with your great art that will be here forever. Love to you and your family and friends...
We always have Kenny G
He is one of the reasons I started getting heavy into jazz, RIP brother
You play?
He was the continuation of the great jazz tradition. Someone should make a documentary on him
R.I.P. #RoyHargrove, thanks for all the great MUSIC you left behind!🎶🎺🙏🏽
One of the greatest. Damn, he'll be missed. Wonderful sound, exciting rhythmic ideas and melodic concepts. Amazing technique. An artist who gave his all to create.
Rest in Peace, Master...... thank you for the memories.....
RIP LEGEND
One of the finest trumpet players that has ever lived. So hope he stays good with life battles
Roy Hargrove... RIP ... SIMPLY. . Thank you Roy for practicing music and for sharing your musical talents with us while you were here with us. I'm not a musician but I am a lover of JAZZ.
Kidney failure alone makes you feel exhausted, depleted and yes depressed. When you are sick and toxins in your body are high, it's hard to even get out of bed in the morning. Dialysis is also hard. My Dad underwent Dialysis and would come home exhausted. I was spared dialysis, but was quite sick and was then saved. I was very very lucky. But make no mistake - there is no cure for kidney failure - only treatment. Drug addiction on top of all of that - wow- so sad and lots of suffering and I suppose trying not to suffer. I am so sorry that someone who had this craft is now gone. Rest in peace Roy. Thank you for music. Music is forever, Roy.
RIP Roy "Tony" Hargrove. Our deepest sympathies to your family. As a Dallasite let me also give big props to Booker T Washington HS for The Performing Arts, that Roy graduated from, that has produced and continues today to turn out some of the best artists of all genres in the world!
Well said..... A.M.H.S. 84
@Joe #RightON 👊🏾 dude was BAD!! we weren’t in his shoes! God rest his weary soul!! 💙🎺💙🎺
I missed this guy❤. Saw him at NYC Blue Note a week before he passed. Great Guy!
I miss him too. Always made it a point to see him live whenever he played in NYC. He was also an important mentor to me and countless other younger musicians at the jam sessions. He turned me onto the music of Fats Navarro who also became a hero.
Just heard about this guy. What a gift he was. Rip
I was 13 or 14 years old when I had a photo opp with Roy in Cape Town. This man is transcendent. That was 20 years old! We are both a lot older now but I will never stop believing that there's a higher power/presence/intellect to his ability.
A genius, philosopher, a spiritual man I wish I had known about him years agoThis was a wonderful interview
I never met Roy, but I feel extreme sadness seeing this. In my mind he was the greatest player of his generation. He picked up the torch from Lee Morgan, Freddie Hubbard, Donald Byrd Et Al. and carried held high.
probably the finest jazz trumpeter we have. so gifted. on the level of lee morgan, kenny dorham, clifford brown etc. they werent with us for long. we love you roy for all you have given us enriching our lives. stay healthy and strong!
:-(((( this BREAKS MY HEART to see him like this! 😔😔😔
what a GREAT LOSS! LOVED thid dude ALWAYS WILL!
#RIPRAH 🎺💙🎺💙🎺💙
Oh GOD! He went just like the other GREATS! May God be pleased with him. I've been listening to him since '92 I loved his rendition of "For Rockelle".
SisterMotown that’s Rodney Whitaker’s Tune
So sad to loose you..rip..
🖤🙏🏼🖤 R.I.P Nov 3,2018 👑
He passed 2/11/18.
Thank you for your service, Roy! You’ll be missed, my friend! Godspeed!🙏❤️😇🎶
The life of a jazz musician is an emotional rollercoaster. You have to know when to say no. It’s imperative to be selective and listen to your body. There’s nothing wrong with taking hiatuses in order to replenish. Being in tune with oneself is the ultimate set. Rest in Peace Brotha, you’ll be truly missed.
One of my favorite musicians learned so much listening to him. Plus he supports the young ones coming up by sitting in at jams with them. Roy is the real deal!
Roy Hargrove had a haunting sound. I was simply awed the first time I heard his sound. Anyone who picks up a trumpet will discover Hargrove; he was a talent that we may never see the likes of again? He is my most admired trumpet player.
What a Beacon of Light, Touch Many Lives, Definetly will B Missed.
I feel better when I listen to Roy Hargrove
Met Roy after a set of his behind the Vanguard. He was walking alone. We spoke a bit about music. I thanked him for the joy he brought to me. A very sincere gentle soul.. What a loss. Imo- for me was the few left in jazz i made sure i got to see when in town. Him and Tom Harrell. Never heard a bad show- always all in. Ty Roy- an uncommonly good soul. With. peace.
*R.I.P LEGEND*
i love his advises
One thing about Roy that I've always loved is, that he always paid respect to jazz musicians he emulated and learned from. He was jazz buff and knew the history of the music. I learned a lot about jazz, and music in general, from Roy.
Wonderful interview by a very talented musician. Tragic, sad news... God bless & keep Roy Hargrove forever.
Rest In Peace to the Great Roy Hargrove.
Well said Bro Roy you did your part Rest in Power.
RIP Roy...
Roy Hargrove will always be my Diamond in the Rough. Gone way too soon. I'll miss you. Rest in Peace.

Great interview and advice for those who aspire for jazz and other styles of music. I like it when he says Improvisation is the key to playing jazz and it can also apply to other kind of music including composition. Thanks for sharing.
A Diamond in the Rough! Thanks for sharing this video.

R.I.P such a talent. 💔😪
So much intelligence and understanding of what's essential in art and life!
Thank you for posting this...Roy is fantastic...
I've been listening to The Vibe the first piece I bought of this brother back in 1992 and it saddens me his gift has been taken away.. Life and health are precious, we should all cherish it, the heaven's horn section just got a lot nicer.. RIP Roy the music lives through...

What a great man!
RIH Mr. Hargrove. Such a young legend and I had just introduced my 8yr old trumpeter to his music last year. Is that Renaldo Ray on piano who also played with Prince? May jazz in all it's forms continue to live on and grow.
RIP Roy
Rest In Peace. You will be greatly missed.
Great talent. Sorely missed. He does look ill in this video. Left us way too young. RIP Roy and thanks!
I miss Roy

Who are we to judge?besides no man is perfect..Roy was amazing and through him and those who came before him we learned a lot.He will forever remain unforgettable.
RIP Roy passed away at 49.
His sounds speak for itself
Beautiful player, gone too soon. A true trumpet king!
The main thing ! RIP Roy! X
I Listened this interview while accidentally putting 0.75 playback speed - WHAT A LAUGH!!! - & from one of my lyrical heroes
At first I thought some people were being judgmental about his sleepy appearance being due to drug use, but then I looked back on earlier interviews and saw how much more clear eyed he was only a few years back. Why do musicians get into that? Perhaps out of boredom from playing the same songs night after night, even if they are your own arrangements?
I've often asked myself the same thing. I believe they have to find a social network and some other hobbies to fill in the loneliness and down time.
TRY FRUSTRATION AT NOT BEING RECEIVED AS THEY WOULD HAVE LIKED FROM THE PUBLIC, ALTHOUGH COMPARED TO MANY OTHER UNSUNG HEROES, ROY, BECAUSE OF HIS VERY HIGH MUSICAL STANDARDS, WAS PROBABLY BETTER KNOW THAN MANY! BUT JAZZ AND ITS 'INDUSTRY' IS TERRIBLY STUNTED....IE.....NO FM RADIO COVERAGE! VERY LITTLE, IF ANY, PROMOTION FROM RECORD COMPANIES...AND CHEAP, POOR (OR NO) AND FINANCIALLY DEPRIVED GIGS, MORE OR LESS COMPLETES THIS VERY BLEAK AND DIM PICTURE OF AN 'INDUSTRY' THAT HASN'T ADVANCED AN INCH IN 100 YEARS OR MORE!
@@247hdjazz you are right. In his own words, Roy said, "they don't pay me to play, they pay me to travel. The traveling is the hard part." With or without the drugs, he was worn out.
BAM
😪💜🎺🎼
