Being a 56 year old rider I couldn't be happier over the retro bike trend. I grew up riding well used bikes built in the late 60s and early 70s. Living in USA where you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a Harley I wanted something unique. So I bought a 2018 Triumph T120. There are very few Triumph riders in my neck of the woods and my bike gets compliments and curious questions everywhere I go. Mine is Competition green/Fusion white, and to me it looks stunning. With the 1200cc motor and the six speed gearbox it runs as good as it looks. I'd love to add a Norton to the garage one of these days to compliment my Bonnie, but I assume it will be difficult to find one where I live. So maybe the Kawasaki Z900 instead. That bike really brings me back to my youth. Long live the modern retros!

I get this on every Guzzi video where I mention it, and there are comments that come down either side. I think I need to come up for another name for it. Sideways v-twin? 😂
You are absolutely right. It's longitudinal. For some reason, the expression "transverse V twin", sometimes prefaced with "iconic" or "agricultural" depending on the reviewer's prejudices, has become a standard thing to say. No one called the BMW K series (flying brick) transverse. The crank shaft is in line with the bike. I'm on my 2nd Guzzi. Great bikes.
Funny ol’ thing. I test rode the V85TT, 1200 Scrambler XE & Speed Twin last Saturday (4th May ‘19). Rode the Guzzi first & was general impressed with it, but it didn’t ‘light my fire’; it was less powerful than my current bike (2017 VStrom 1000) & was a bit too quirky for me really. Then went to ride the two Triumphs & Wow! The Guzzi felt like a tractor in comparison. The 1200 Scrambler XE was my favourite, followed very closely by the Speed Twin. The Twin would make a lot more sense than the Scrambler really as I don’t ride off road, but man, what a bike the XE is 😍 The Speed Twin is awesome too. I’m just waiting for some figures from the salesman at Triumph before I make a decision. I am testing an RE Interceptor & Himalayan next Saturday too & May ask politely if my local BMW dealer can give me a go on his R9T too? 🤔 Decisions decisions... If only money wasn’t an issue 🙄😩
I'm yet to ride the scrambler CG, but I'll try to give it a go some time. I'm sure it's an incredible bike. I can imagine the sensation you're talking about from going from the V7 test ride back to my Street Twin - the Triumphs feel like a more refined ride. But for some Guzzi fans that's part of the appeal I guess. Wasn't it the V7 II that got a bit of criticism from long-time Guzzi fans for being too smooth? So they gave the next iteration a bit more rumble...
I understand yeah - I just meant that the Moto Guzzi/Triumph transition was most apparent to me when I test rode the V7 and went onto the Street Twin to ride home straight away 👍
Funny you should say that! Triumph are lending me one of their press bikes for a couple of weeks. It’s arriving on Wednesday. I doubt I’ll trade up... but I know I’m going to want one after this.
Retro just means "styled to give the vague impression of being from an earlier era." As time moves on, and the golden age of the 60s and 70s moves further into the past, I fear that we will hear ridiculous expressions like "super retro" and "hyper retro" and "ultra retro" being used. One day, there will be "retro" bikes that look a bit like the 916.
It would be interesting to see some of them aiming for that kinda of era just to have a bit of a twist on things as you don't see that sort of style around these days
Isn’t the Royal Enfield exactly that? It’s essentially a late ’60s British bike but new, with just a bit more modern frame and upgraded brakes, it’s even got inner tube wheels. The w800 is a more modernized, upmarket Japanese take on that. The Monkey is essentially a reboot of the classic z50j of 1973, and the z900rs steals its styling cues from 1972 which isn’t really ’80s eighter.
Add the Thruxtons( basic and Triumph's hot version), BMW R9/5 Blue R/75. Honda's CB500F shouldn't be overlooked for around town, weekend scratcher - I've got a 2018 model.
I focused on bikes that were new or updated for 2019, but seems like a lot of people also wanted to see some of these bikes on the list. So I'll keep that in mind for next year!
Absolutely there are new 2019/2020 CB100’s. They are only available in Japanese and European markets. They look sick! Best looking modern retros out there hands down.
Well, if these are "retro" ... Guess it depends on how young you are. "Retro" to me would look like 1960s-70s bikes, and the only ones I saw that comes close are the Enfield, Speed Twin, and W800. You guys have your heads stuck too far into high-tech. A bike that's always been "retro" is the Suzuki LS650, whether as the "Savage" or "Boulevard," and the little Honda Rebel as well.
They’re all pretty clearly retro, with the possible exceptions being the Yamahas and the MV Agusta, because they take their design cues from earlier decades, mainly the early 70s to early 80s
William Harvey just because you don't like a style it doesn't make it a pos , it's fine for people to like different bikes . I think it's retro done properly they've improved the reliability , smoothness , braking and power but it's still recognisably an Enfield. I don't like the modern Japanese sports bikes , you can only really use them on a track, you don't look cool at 20 mph in town on them ,you look like a fool with too much money.
Guzzis do not have a transverse V twin. It's in line. For some reason, nearly everyone gets this wrong. The crank shaft is in line with the frame, not across the frame.
@@hmm809 I was not using "in line" as in "cylinders in line with each other/straight/parallel" but "in line" as in "in line with the frame" or, if you prefer, "longitudinally mounted".
@@hmm809 Yes, you're right that the Moto Guzzi catalogue says transverse cylinders. They even use that wonderful made up English word, "transversal". However, no other bike with the crankshaft running lengthways along the bike would ever be called "transverse": the BMW boxer, BMW K series, the Honda Goldwing. It's one of those illogical anomalies about Guzzi terminology. Wonderful bikes, though. I'm on my second Guzzi.
Im sorry did you say the Honda Monkey was a restyled Grom??? The Monkey has been atound since the 80’s and theres also a slightly bigger version called the Gorilla

No one called the BMW K series (flying brick) transverse. The crank shaft is in line with the bike. I'm on my 2nd Guzzi. Great bikes.
It a v twin. good enough?
MOTOBOB V7? I rode the V85TT?
I understand yeah - I just meant that the Moto Guzzi/Triumph transition was most apparent to me when I test rode the V7 and went onto the Street Twin to ride home straight away 👍
CB1000R and Vitpilen 701
MotoBob - when are you trading in your Street Twin for the Speed Twin?! Keep us posted!
Funny you should say that! Triumph are lending me one of their press bikes for a couple of weeks. It’s arriving on Wednesday. I doubt I’ll trade up... but I know I’m going to want one after this.
I love the classic look of my moto guzzi v9 bobber.
I can see that "retro" means retro of the '80s. Iconic designs of the '60s missing. If they built them they would sell
Agreed. I watched the video wondering when they were going to show the retro bikes.
It would be great to see some love shown to the Benly and Dream.
Great choice 👍🏼
what do you think of Honda's CB1000r ,the super nakeds I think ..They are calling it a neo cafe racer .
A gdzie jest Fb Mondial Sport classic 300cc?
Honda cb1100 ex ?😕
I've focused on bikes that were new for 2019 or updated. I don't think there have been any updates to the CB1100? It's a beautiful bike though!
Said to myself after watching this vid, "Hmmm. Nice bikes. Then I went out and took a ride on my Harley Sportster. Nothing else to say.
This cafe racer thing is blowing up, lately.
great vlog :)
You missed one, hard to get more RETRO than the Suzuki S40 boulevard. Single cylinder, carburetor, belt drive, in production for 34 YEARS!
Im surprised you didnt mention the Katana's tiny little fuel tank. You'll be riding from petrol station to petrol station with its tiny 12 litre tank.
Good point. Thanks. Maybe I’ll get chance to make a full review at some point
Excellent!
That spitfire 6 though 😍
Oh Hell Yes!! I doubt I could find one in the US though... pity.
i did not see any retro looking bikes unless you think retro is from last week
Probably because there's so many retros on the market, people think that's the norm :-)
If not these, what do you consider a retro looking bike then?
They’re all pretty clearly retro, with the possible exceptions being the Yamahas and the MV Agusta, because they take their design cues from earlier decades, mainly the early 70s to early 80s
Right on, Ronan
@@motobob R E classic 500. Real retro, not an imposter.
Jawa Classic & Jawa 42 just launched in India... Please have a look.
Thanks for the suggestion
Enfields arn't retro bikes, they just got stuck at 1975
Like Harley Davidson. It cannot be retro when it never pretty much stayed the same.
But my brother Enfield is a retro bike They Purposefully did it
and that's a good thing
@William Harvey no only the design it comes with abs and fuel injection
William Harvey just because you don't like a style it doesn't make it a pos , it's fine for people to like different bikes . I think it's retro done properly they've improved the reliability , smoothness , braking and power but it's still recognisably an Enfield. I don't like the modern Japanese sports bikes , you can only really use them on a track, you don't look cool at 20 mph in town on them ,you look like a fool with too much money.
Best retro Bikes would be a 750 Norton or BSA.
We would like to see more of that new Norton scrambler super motard machine if possible especially where you're located !
Love the v85tt
In my opinion the Yamaha scr950 are worth mentioned than there two other scramblers!
Guzzis do not have a transverse V twin. It's in line. For some reason, nearly everyone gets this wrong. The crank shaft is in line with the frame, not across the frame.
In line V engine? never heard of that
@@hmm809 I was not using "in line" as in "cylinders in line with each other/straight/parallel" but "in line" as in "in line with the frame" or, if you prefer, "longitudinally mounted".
@@mikefule Ok, I get it, but even Moto Guzzi company calls it that way. Cylinders are put in that way, so there's how they get their characterization
Great video !!! Thanks for your sharing, my favorite one is the CCM Spitfire and the scrambler XC for a second bike - I already waiting for the new one : Thruxton TFC 🤪🤪🤪🤪 can’t wait 😅😅😅😅😅
A TFC thruxton with a Scrambler XC is like my dream garage 🤤
MOTOBOB I guess I will have the same idea for 2020 🤩🤩🤩
No thruxton r??
Love thruxtons, but tried to focus on bikes that are new or updated for 2019.
MOTOBOB Thruxton R TFC??
How about honda's CB series? They're the best looking ones..
Yeah good point. Couldn’t quite decide if they’re retro or not though?
@@motobob they're more like modern sports cafe i think?
whats the left helmet at 6:14 please, I like it alot, the google too if you know them, please :)
it's the DMD 75 helmet. You're welcome ;)
No Speedmaster in there!?
I tried to focus on bikes that were new or updated for 2019, but I might make a follow up of more bikes just generally on sale. I love the speedmaster - such a well proportioned bike
I thought you might have slipped in the new Honda Super Cub C125 ;)
Ah good shout! Looks really good :)
@@motobob ,, I bought a new Super Cub a couple of months ago as a second bike. Something to zip around town on. I haven't stopped grinning..
I’m hoping to try one out at some point. Enjoy!
