Another point would be blending in with a crowd; Americans chew more gum than almost any nation in the world, so if you wanted to seem like a typical American, you would publicly chew gum to seem more ordinary. (Yes, I know this comes from Godzilla, but I actually like that movie and the fact isnt wrong; it works)
Well, the first Digimon series, Digimon Adventure, did just recently get a modern reboot. Also, spearmint is a type of mint, and something about the scent and chemicals present in the oil of several kinds of mint has been proven to ward off insects and small rodents. That said, to humans, the scent of mint is actually rather strong, hence why it can quickly cover up bad breath, but mint has also been found to have quite a few health benefits on its own. And there are quite a few different species of mint, but as far as my studies and research have gone, no mint plants were able to get imported to Japan until around the 20th century rolled around. Mint was unknown to the Americas and Japan, as far as can tell it originates from Europe and mainland Asia, had a few different variants of mint plants growing natively. From what I've been able to unearth, initially, there were only about a dozen or so original species of mint but the cultivation and selective breeding of the plants has gotten us a bit more diversity when it comes to that family of plants. Now, would some shinobi clans actually have cultivated and harvested mint if it was available to them in their historical eras? Hard to say for sure but I like to think so, mint would fit quite well into their sense of utility but probably be a bit more restrictive when it came to actual dietary requirements, that is to say, it would be an occasional consumable, like maybe once or twice a month, due to just how overpowering the scent the oil can have, mixing that in with a smoke bomb in a large enough dose would not only help obscure a person further because the scent of the oil would be so overpowering that what did manage to get into their noses would likely overpower the sense of smell of everything caught inside the smoke well after it had cleared up, which would make animals with keen senses of smell be far more hesitant to help out because of just how much their own senses are being overpowered.
Plus if they where to splash some mint oil somewhere during an infiltration mission it will help distract the guards because they would be curious as to what that smell is
Sorry, I was citing a bad source earlier, I did a little more research and found Mint does originate from Europe and mainland Asia, but not likely China or Korea so the likelihood of mint getting introduced to Japan early is still pretty low. That said, everything else I said about mint is still pretty valid
@Daniel Davies When people talk about mint being a deterrent to insects, spiders, and rodents they're actually talking about mint oil. The two most common types of mint oil are those from spearmint and peppermint, which have their oil used in gums, toothpaste, and candy but spritzing a bit of the oil from either mixed in with water (5 parts water 1 to 2 parts mint oil) can help keep pests out of your home if you spray it all around the edges of rooms and the outside of a structure. Something about the chemicals in mint oil acts as a natural deterrent to insects, spiders, and rodents. Mint oil also has a strong, often overpowering, scent to it. The scent is so strong that what we as humans can spell is often overpowering, it's even been shown to be so strong that dogs and cats will get a little disoriented for a bit by the smell if they're close enough to even a small unopened, undiluted vial of the stuff
Weird thought: Based on the short explaining the plot, it would appear that Ninja hide all over the world, how much do you want to bet that they took various aspects from whatever culture/country they were hiding in to help them blend in better?
Me when I read the title: "Yeah, Okay, Gum has occasionally been seen having some sort of random or silly utility and versatility before in pop culture. I could see some sort of silly Ninja character using it and being somewhat true to a ninja's job of getting tools from whatever they can get their hands on." That’s actually a good point. The more mediocre you looks the less you would stand out. And that’s something that a ninja would probably go for.....unless it’s a konoichi, in which case.......
So if a ninja was in america, being blonde or brown haired instead of dark brown would almost be a requirement...wow that makes a lot of sense. In fact, having dark hair makes people have more visual contrast, so a blonde ninja who is pale would be less standout than someone who is pale with uber dark hair like me.

16:23 "For the glory of Satan!" But seriously, maybe you could do an episode on Kumamon, most people on the web seems to only know him because of the memes.
#001 What I have learned from this episode: Practically anything in my house or more specifically my pantry can be use as ninja tools with a bit of ingenuity.
I love the videos that talk about what could have been/what could be. How it may not be traditional, but follows the spirit and would totally be used by Ninjas if it had been around.
the gum chewing thing totally works I worked in a call center and would crochet as a silent alternative where the simple repetition kept the mind sharp and focused.
this seems like it could develop into a sub-series of which ninja, examining seemingly unrelated concepts to see just how a ninja could use them if they had access to it
Can confirm the Fishing part. My parents used to be fishers/fishmongers, and my late father would swear by bubblegum's ability to catch specifically catfish. They love the stuff, almost any fishermen seems to agree.
I agree with the chewing gum helps with focus part. When I was a child I was used in a study of how children learn. During my time there it was discovered that my ability to focus whent up whenever I would chew gum, so they had me chew gum from then on
I'm interested to see you go into more speculation in the future. Perhaps on what uses ninjas could have of modern tools (like gum in this case) or even what a modern day ninja would look like. I've had an idea brewing for a while now (AKA I've made some notes in a notebook) on a sort of secret law enforcement agency in the US that employs tactics of ninjas, with modern equivalents to the 6 tools of the ninja (the name escapes me and I can't seem to find the actual term) to assist organizations like the DEA and FBI. Was thinking of writing a story about it. Really interesting video! I always enjoy this series but this one was particularly good.
For another example of useful gums, from Wigly, you have Airwave, and it’s different strength variations, which are meant to clear up one’s sinuses. I tend to use Airwave Extreme, a Menthol and Eucalyptus flavored gum that clears them via smell by burning out your sinuses with the smell as you breath in and out while chewing.

How ninja is koga from pokemon? I feel like there is so much to discover and learn on that
That and the Pokemon Ninjask
solid snake
The wait was totally worth it, this is one of my favorite witch ninja episodes, great job Gaijin :)
I’ve been waiting for this episode! Ninjala looks like so much fun!
The ninja being kids could be reference to how ninja had to be small and light. This is also why the gum turns the eater into a kid.
16:23 "For the glory of Satan!"
But seriously, maybe you could do an episode on Kumamon, most people on the web seems to only know him because of the memes.
#001 What I have learned from this episode: Practically anything in my house or more specifically my pantry can be use as ninja tools with a bit of ingenuity.
Imagine if they did a crossover game “Splatoon x Ninjala”
what a fascinating video! it honestly was fun to learn so much about gum and speculate how the ninja would have used it
I love the videos that talk about what could have been/what could be. How it may not be traditional, but follows the spirit and would totally be used by Ninjas if it had been around.
Another thing to keep in mind is that it doesn’t take
Place
In
1519
Or
Something.
It’s 2020 y’all.
🎶 "Real ninja chew gum!!" 🎶
the gum chewing thing totally works I worked in a call center and would crochet as a silent alternative where the simple repetition kept the mind sharp and focused.
This... this was a lot more informative than I was expecting. I’m actually impressed.
this seems like it could develop into a sub-series of which ninja, examining seemingly unrelated concepts to see just how a ninja could use them if they had access to it
So are we going to mention the cat in the episode 0 who’s bell seems to have been a factor in the gum and I think might be a yokai?
I wouldn’t be surprised
I saw that to and I guess it would make it magic yokai gum
Awesome stuff as always. Now I really want this game. Also, idea for next Which ninja, are the phantom thieves real ninja?
Can confirm the Fishing part. My parents used to be fishers/fishmongers, and my late father would swear by bubblegum's ability to catch specifically catfish. They love the stuff, almost any fishermen seems to agree.
I agree with the chewing gum helps with focus part. When I was a child I was used in a study of how children learn. During my time there it was discovered that my ability to focus whent up whenever I would chew gum, so they had me chew gum from then on
This theory is very nice, and I'm glad Mat Pat taught you something. Also, good job with the sponsor
Okay this is, no bs by far, the dopest video I’ve seen thus far this year 😁🙌🏽👏🏽. Omg GREAT vid bro seriously and tweeting lol.
1:36 Of course you don't. I mean... Even Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell pulled it out in Blacklist. In it's realistic, non magical version.
Mint and its scent does repel insects. It's why spearmint repels the buggers that track you thru your breath.
6:33 holy crap. I got that exact same box for the winter holidays.
Ok, what madness is this? Every time I hear the intro music,i can HEAR Gaijin Goombah sing it, but he hasn't done it ONCE! WHY DO I HAVE THIS MEMORY!?
I'm just imagining your search history after researching for this video, must be filled with gums.
Mint also helps the mind focus, so the spearmint would also help because of the mint in it.
