I saw them in concert in 1979, the air was electric with excitement. We were standing the whole time. On the way to the stadium , their limousine drove by a couple of lanes over, they rolled down their windows and waved at the teenage girls next to them, those girls almost fainted. The whole night was great!!!
Maurice is on the keyboards. It's cool how y'all love them. They're the only group that I'll say, never had one mediocre song. Everything was from damn good to great.
Personally, I would put ABBA in that category too. Everything they recorded was gold. It was fitting that that was the title of their greatest hits double album. One of those rare albums where you don't want to skip any song on it.
Back in 1979, when many of the Bee Gee's greatest hits came out, this song was played numerous times hourly on the radio stations. A great and fun era of pop-rock music in those days.
Unfortunately they did not come close to the 5 decades The Bee Gees remained relevant. When they weren’t making music for themselves, they wrote and produced very successful music for their brother Andy and other major artists . I loved the Carpenters, and I was so sad when Karen died. My love for The Bee Gees has been a multiple decade! obsession!
This single hit the planet like a meteor- you have no idea how much unless you lived it in real-time! When it was released I lived quite literally on both sides of the Atlantic. I lived ON the Atlantic on board the QE2 based in NY. So I’d go to the clubs in NY and it’s Tragedy played everywhere. I’d go to the clubs on board and it’s Tragedy played virtually on repeat! I’d get to Southampton and go home to London to the clubs and it’s Tragedy endlessly in every club too! I’m sure if there were any nightclubs in Tierra del Fuego they played Tragedy on repeat !!!!
Bee Gees Forever!😍Love You Inside and Out, and Closer Than Close would be great follow-ups. Maurice sings lead in Closer Than Close and its a smooth hypnotic jam.❤🔥🎶🎤
I grew up with this great group. They wrote all their own music for themselves & others. "Tragedy" was from their disco era. Love their early music especially 60's-70's. Barry has a great falsetto voice. Some of their early hits were "New York Mining Disaster 1941", "To Love Somebody", "Holiday", "Massachusetts", "World", "And The Sun Will Shine", "Really & Sincerely", "Words", "The Singer Sang His Song", "I've Gotta Get A Message To You", "Lonely Days", "I Started A Joke", "Melody Fair", "First of May", "Give Your Best", "Lamplight" etc.
Dagmar, all great song suggestions for reactions in the future. Love their late 60's to early 70's songs, too! I hope they choose some from your list, especially those with precious Robin on lead!
The Bee Gees are the only group/artist in history, who had six consecutive number one hits (in the U.S.), which were written and performed by the artist(s) themselves. "Tragedy" was the sixth song in that progression.
Yeah that’s so tragic. Andy passed at the young age of 30, and Robin passed In 2012 at the age of 65. These guys were pure talent and we were lucky to have them.
They were remarkable. From the romantic 60's to the 70's R&B and then disco. Did I mention all of those wonderful songs they wrote for all of those other incredible artists through the 80's and beyond? Come to think of it they had a few more wonderful songs through that period too. I don't think anybody could dislike the Bee Gees and their music. What an amazing journey they took us on x
Bee Gees are one of my favorite bands.........I love them!!!! I love this song!!!! and thanks for accepting my request!!!! This song is very deep!!! Love this song!!!!
Everybody has their own view on the best Bee Gees songs. They are all great, but when this came out in 1979 it brought goose bumps to me, it was that good.
Tragedy and Nights on Broadway are easily my 2 favorite Bee Gees hits. More "Must listens" would be "You Should Be Dancing", "I Started A Joke" or "I've Gotta Get A Message To You".
I couldn't agree more, Asia. I just lost my husband to cancer, 9-10-21, he would've been 62 in October of that year. When he died, I said "There will be no one else." I meant it, I'm alright with myself and I have my family, they're my strength. I really like The Be Gees, so did my late husband, he even sampled a verse off of one their songs, "How Deep Is Your Love" for a love letter to me, (this letter was 3 pages long) anyway, this song was one of my favorites by them. Thanks so much for this video reaction, it was really cool y'all!
They broke a record with this release. They had five songs in the top ten. Barry made the explosion sound. There is a video that shows them in their the studio. It's amazing. What is also amazing is none of them ever learned to read music.
Thanks from us older folks Asia and BJ. You know how to liven things up.l Love you guys. Your so much fun. You brighten up my day every time I check out your videos. Bless You ;-) ;-) ;-)
Great reaction by both of you--LOVE!! Barry made the explosion noise-- Barry cupped his hands around a mic and made that noise into the mike. The sound engineers took the three attempts and overdubbed them (layered them) for one big noise. There's a Making of Tragedy docu on You Tube!
Asia and BJ, just loved your reaction to "Tragedy" from the 1979 "Spirits" album. Please react to the "Making of Tragedy" video if you can. It will explain a lot of things that you heard and commented on, including that explosion that Barry created "on command" when they recorded this wonderful song!
Please react to an underated Begee song Called YOU Win Again. Nobody had better sounds than The Beatles. The Begees harmonized better than anyone though. Maurice Gibb was on the keyboard. He was the best musician of the group.
You guys should check out Heartbreaker by Dionne Warwick and Chain Reaction by Diana Ross. Both songs were written by the Bee Gees and you can hear Barry's backing vocal in them. The brothers were such great song writers.
I attended a Bee Gees concert in Las Vegas. Called one night only, in 1997 they were absolutely amazing live, in front of me in the rows was Olivia Newton John and her family, the Bee Gees were so diverse, and have written songs for other artists, the Bee Gees always considered themselves song writers first and foremost rather than vocalist!
Their dad asked once, how they managed to write so many songs (1,000+) Barry said they just put emotions to music. The explosion was Barry blowing into the mike, a few times, they layered it to get the desired effect.
I love every song they’ve sung since the 60’s, there just isn’t any bad songs by The Bee Gees! My heart feels sad for Barry, the only brother left. 😭♥️ Thank you Asia & BJ for playing their songs! 💙💖💞🌹🌹
Great reaction. So many hits. Can y'all please react to "Nights On Broadway" and "Fanny Be Tender". Two of my favorites by them and not many people do them. Thanks and God Bless. P.S. there is a great Midnight Special version of "Nights On Broadway" (1975) and really shows off Robin's and Maurice's Vocals.
love the Bee Gees. I just finished watching a doco on them on Netflix (I think) from Barry's perspective, the only one left. Great story. Interestingly in the doco, they did not say that their music was disco, but dance music. It was others that labelled their music disco. also in the doco, it shows how they came up with the 4 songs for the movie 'Saturday Night Fever'. because they were all brothers, they knew how to work with each other, how their voices harmonised the best. Barry did not start singing that high pitch til the disco era started in order to find an edge and different sound, as their songs before this era he sung in his natural range. anyways, love your reaction. They were not only great singers but also song writers. Saw them in 2000 in Australia and it was a great performance, just the 3 of them and their vocals which complemented each other. I Finally got a chance to take a walk down memory lane in Australia where they have a lane that has murals and statues dedicated to their life - called the "Bee Gees Way", cause after moving here to Australia when they were young, this is where they started their young career - all four of them as you also gotta include Andy Gibb. My fav song of all time is How Deep is Your Love. they have so many other songs including 'More than a Woman, I Started a Joke, Massachusetts, Staying Alive, Jive Talking, You Should Be Dancing'..
Grew up on the BeeGees, and a lot of the groups y’all are checking out. My parents were (are still) cool. Check out “alone” by them. It’s a later song, not early days, but it’s great.
Hey guys, fun fact about this song. Barry actually created the explosion sound in the studio by blowing into the microphone until they got the sound they liked. That explosion took the song to number one for several weeks. Call it one of the first live samples.

Cute! I remember a best friend (male) that i was in his car driving around and he was singing it full force and said he needed to tighten up his jeans to get to the high pitch notes - it was hysterical ! (If you were there obviously 😬🤪😳) but every time I hear this song 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣. You guys are very cute! 🥰
I cannot tell you how much I love watching you guys react to songs I was grooving to when I was in my teens and 20’s . If BJ was any more adorable, I couldn’t take it ! She’s beautiful inside and out . You both are - keep em comin ‘
Great reaction to a great song! If you get a chance, check out the Making of Tragedy video. It shows how Barry created the explosion sound using his voice. It is cool and a great look at how they create their songs. Music first, lyrics after that.
This is my era Saturday night fever they were centered around that movie I think they song every song in a movie disco was in big time great memories thanks y’all

What’s weird about this , is I grew up listening to the BeeGees. They grew up just down the road from where I live!
My FAVORITE BeeGees song, because it flat out ROCKS!!

How could one family so blessed with that much talent? Nobody could top them

They wrote all these songs and also for other singers!!!
This was my guilty pleasure jam/jawn in 1979.... Sr. yr in HS. I was a rock girl, but loved me some Bee Gee's.
Keyboard is Maurice Gibb…he always played the keyboard and sang harmony
