Robin (on the left) sang a lot of the leads in the pre-R&B/Disco days, the '60s and early '70s. He had a distinctive quavering voice. Robin and Maurice (on the right) were twins, born in 1949 (both deceased now). Barry was born in 1946. They started singing as a group when the twins were 12 or 13.
They started singing as early as 9 and 6, and then as the BGs when Barry was 12 and the twins 9. There’s a video of them singing live on Australian tv in 1960.
Just to add some to DP's info; 1955-to early 1958, they performed as The Rattlesnakes (the twins would turn 6 Dec. 22, 1955). 1958, they briefly performed as Wee Johnny Hayes & the Blue Cats, when they caught the attention of Bill Gates & Bill Goode. 1958, Gates renamed them BGs (after noticing all the "BG" initials in the room; Gill Gates, Bill Goode, Barbara Gibb & Barry Gibb). The name BGs evolved into Bee Gees & took on the "Brothers Gibb" meaning.
It's been FIFTY YEARS and this song can still make me cry. 💔 You never forget your first love. His name was David Hinson. Six foot seven red hair brown eyes and so sweet. I'll never forget him.
I was watching Barry Gibbs doing his first solo performance after his brothers Robin and Maurice had passed away. He started singing How Can You Mend a Broken Heart, in front of about 1,000 people, and when it was time for his brothers to join in, he broke down, and missed a few of the words. He finished singing with tears in his eyes. That was tough to watch, since I grew up listening to them sing as a group, and he was missing his brothers. He got a standing ovation for about 10 minutes.
@@joepimentel306 I recall them once explaining in an interview that when they wrote 'Massachusetts' they had never been to the USA and knew little about it. To them in an almost mythical way, "Massachusetts" was so quintessentially American.
This was my introduction to the Bee Gees as a kid. My dad played this song for me. Now that he has passed away this song reminds me of him. He was a huge fan.
I had listened to the Al Green version for so many years without knowing the bee gees wrote it. It amazes me how many great songs the Bee gees wrote for themselves and other people. They really were a hit machine. Great Sky documentary about them came out couple years ago. Really good watch.
My favorite moment at the 1978 concert was when they sang this song and each time Barry sang that breathless "ahhh", hearing all the girls (including me) screaming
I hope you do some more older Bee Gees, where Robin Gibb was often the lead singer. My all time favorite is "I Started A Joke" (1968). "Massachusetts" is really good too. I'll be waiting 😊.
"Run To Me", "Lonely Days, Lonely Nights" and "I Started A Joke" are 3 of their big pre-disco hits well worth reacting to. Robin sings the lead on I Started A Joke.
Ahh, my favorite era of Bee Gers, when they were one of the best ballads bands on 3 continents, and before they became stars of disco. Thank you for this. They are Robin, Barry, and Maurice. Barry and Robin each took lead vocals in different songs. Maurice was harmonies and played piano or guitar, much of the time.
This is one of my favorite Bee Gees' songs. But maybe Gene Pitney had the answer way back in the day. In his song, "Only Love Can Break A Heart" he says, "only love can break a heart; only love can mend it again". BTW, that would be a good song to react to as well.
Nothing like sibling harmonies, and they were the best! In my opinion, their earlier works, like this one, are best. Robin was always my favorite, with that natural sweet vibrato…. His voice just touches your heart. One of my favorites is “Lonely Days”… its full of surprises! You should also check out their cover of “Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow”. They’ve also written hundreds of songs that have also been sung by other artists. Unbelievably talented.
Another great pre-disco song by them is Run to Me - Robin and Barry switch off lead vocals and the chorus has that beautiful full 3 brother harmonizing sound. For Robin’s signature song, check out I Started a Joke. Massachusetts, I Can’t See Nobody, and Words are also fantastic 60s/early 70s ballads.
You're right, the one on the left started the song. That's Robin. He has a very distinct voice. Barry is still singing much of the lead . There's a live version of them in Las Vegas singing this song. They are older in that video, they do a great live version . Al Green did a famous cover of How Do You Mend a Broken Heart. This was one of Michael Jackson's favorite songs. Barry has talked about in interviews how Jackson would call him sometimes & wanted him to sing it to him over the phone.
The Bee Gees really captured the sound of two separate eras in pop music... great balladeers in the easy listening 60's and of course their domination of disco in the 70's... they were able to do it because of the ability to write great songs and their incredible vocal talents. I actually like the early version of the Bee Gees, 'I Started A Joke' & 'Lonely Days' were huge hits. Overlooked disco era gems (on reaction channels) are 'Nights On Broadway' and 'Fanny Be Tender'.
Actually, both Broadway and Fanny, from '75s Main Course album, are r&b songs. The disco songs came later. And after disco came even more hits for themselves and others.
Robin starts the lead vocals then Barry in his normal tone finished along with those beautiful harmonies of the 3 brothers. Barry and Robin wrote this song after the group got back together after a break up. Al Green covered "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart",so soulfully. Brilliant.
Yes, Robin sang the lead here. The reason why you think of Barry as THE lead singer is because their biggest hits were in the 70s. When Barry started using his falsetto voice they were selling more records. Barry tried to share the spotlight, as lead singer, with Robin, but Robin insisted Barry keep singing in falsetto and being the lead singer, because it was a formula for success in Robin's eyes. And, as Barry stated, that is what Robin was all about, selling more records. So that is how the falsetto became a dominant theme for the Bee Gees and why Barry was lead singer in the 70s.
No they both actually shared lead on this song and the main lead voice is Barry's, Robin sang the first verse though. Of course they all sang their gorgeous harmonies together on this song.
This is an early Bee Gees song. They had two distinct eras: one as a so-called "baroq, 1967-73 ... and one as a disco group for the rest of the 70s and early 80s. What both eras have in common is great singing and harmonies ... and top-notch productions.
I'd like to suggest "Run to Me," probably my favorite Bee Gees ballad. The harmony in the chorus and melody work for me. And yes, Robin (on the left) started the song.
The BeeGees manager asked them to write a song for Otis Redding and they wrote it in one night but Otis died before he could record it, the song was “ To Love Somebody.” Please play it . It’s one their best. I love you two!
All 3 brothers (Robin, Barry, Maurice) were great vocalists. Maurice(on the right) sang very little as the "lead" singer. But Robin (on the left) sang "lead" on a lot of their early songs. You should check out "I've Gotta Get a Message to You", "I Started a Joke" or "Massachusetts" to get a good dose of Robin as the "lead" singer. I like all of their songs, but the early songs are my favorites. The ones I mentioned before as well as songs like "Words", "To Love Somebody" "New York Mining Disaster", "Spicks and Specks" and many, many more. You really need to do a Bee Gees Marathon. Love it, Ya'll
No Andy died quite a few years ago. But they are all brothers, including Andy. On that c.d. cover you have, Robin is on the left, Barry, and then Maurice is on the right. Barry is the only one still living. Great band!!! And they all take turns singing, and in other songs too, with the lead. You guys are cool, I'll keep watching. - DJ Jazzy J-Ray. 👍😎👍
To Love Somebody is my favorite. Early Bee Gees music didn't have Barry's falsetto. Robin starts this song but the rest is sung by Barry and brothers on backup during chorus. They were my first concert in 1979 St Louis. I was 10 years old and will never forget it!
Robin starts off the song and sings the verses and Barry sings the chorus section... with several tracks of harmony from all three, you can't forget brother Maurice
Robin started it. Barry sings the second part. Barry didn’t always sing falsetto. He had a naturally deeper voice. He said he was working on this song when Robin came to his house after they’d broken up, and wanted to reconcile. And Barry asked him if he wanted to help him finish the song. Then Barry’s overture of reconciliation is that he offered to let Robin start out the song, and he’d sing the second verse.
"How can you mend a broken heart" was one of 2 songs (the other was "Lonely Days") that Barry and Robin wrote together after the BeeGees had split up for about 1.5 years. This was their first collaborative effort again after getting back together. The first verse was sung by Robin, the second by Barry. The harmonies of course by all three brothers. You just don't recognize their voices because they had not begun singing in falsetto yet, lol. The BeeGees were: the tallest and oldest brother (with the big hair and beard), Barry Gibb, born September 1, 1946, the only surviving Gibb brother. Robin Gibb (with the long hair, no beard), born December 22, 1949-passed away May 20, 2012, and Robin's fraternal twin brother Maurice (the balding brother with the beard, pronounced "Morris") Gibb, born December 22, 1949-passed away January 12, 2003. They also had another, younger, brother Andy Gibb, born March 5, 1958-passed away March 10, 1988. The three oldest brothers were born on the Isle of Man (UK). Oldest brother Barry got seriously burned when he accidentally pulled boiling tea over himself at 18 months old. He was in coma for a while, nearly died and was in hospital for many months. Because of this, he did not learn to talk until after the twins were born. Later the family moved to Manchester and from there they emigrated to Australia in 1958, right after Andy was born. Their musical career, which they had started as little kids, didn't lead to international success so they moved back to the UK in 1966. Then they had a string of big hits, until they temporarily broke up around 1970 for 15 months. Started back up, looking for a new sound which they first found in 1974 with the transitional album "Mr. Natural". After that "Main Course" was the first album that moved them into a new direction: more rhythm&blues, dance music like with great hits like Nights on Broadway and Jive Talkin'. From 1976 on they went all out with falsetto driven dance music which lead to their biggest commercial success as they provided classic songs for the Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack (1977 Stayin' Alive, How Deep is Your Love, Night Fever amongst them). If you want to hear Maurice sing lead, listen to Closer than Close. Or see all 3 sing with the live version of Nights on Broadway-Barry sings in his lower voice, Robin shares lead, and Maurice sings falsetto.
Nice! Released in 1971, "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" was the Bee Gees first US No. 1 single and the follow up to their 1970 top five hit "Lonely Days". "How Can You Mend a Broken Heart" has been recorded by numerous artists in the years since, Al Green's version recorded in 1972 stands out among them. Green really makes the song his without detracting at all from the greatness of the original. Check out his version a.s.a.p.
I was lucky enough to see the Bee Gees twice in concert. The first time was during a bit of a low in their career after the 60s but before their disco smash took over the world, that was jive Talkin’. In my opinion one of the most gorgeous melodies ever written was the Bee Gees, To Love Somebody’ I don’t think enough people react to this. I see a lot of reactions to staying alive, which is understandable, but I love it when people react to their earlier works as well. I really love your comments, so insightful and thoughtful. Thank you!
Only time can mend a broken heart. Robin started the song (lead) then Barry takes the lead. This is early Brothers Gibb song; i like their early music. They do this song live, do look it up, you will like.
Robin, Maurice and Barry Gibb. This song was recorded by Al green too and the Al green version it was used in the movie nothing hill with Julia Roberts
We will never ever hear the likes of the Bee Gees in our lifetime. They were truly one of a kind as singers and composers. Yes you are correct Asia. The one on the left is Robin and he was the lead singer in this one along with of course Barry. Robin's twin Maurice is always back-up. Gee they gave the world some amazing songs, not just for themselves but many other singers too. Top reaction again Asia and BJ ❤️
There are videos out there of them as kids on stage singing. They were from a very poor Australian family that moved to England to make money off the kids singing group. They actually supported the family, which is kinda sad, but it made them into great song writers and performers, and hit makers.
Heard this on the radio all the time, such a pretty song. My favorite, then Stayin' Alive. I like a lot of their songs, more than I dislike. Rare for me. 50 yrs. still know the words!
Now that you've experienced Robin Gibb's amazing lead vocals, I highly highly recommend you listen next to "Nights on Broadway": please check out the performance from the Midnight Special so you can bask in his voice, live! He sounds sooo good on that. It's wonderful hearing the Bee Gees singing live. Love your reactions, you guys rock!
That's Robin doing the lead on this song. They did take turns singing lead more in the beginning of their career but Barry ended up taking lead more basically because he was so damn good but they all contributed which made them so great!
I remember when this song came out; my boyfriend and I had just broken up and I played this over and over, heartbroken. Love it! Watch Fanny be tender with my love, another older song but amazing!!
Love this song 😀 Asia and Bj I have a suggestion for you,Barry Manilow has hit after hit . Time in New England, Mandy and Copa cabana are just a start, check him out sometime.great voice!!!🤗
Robin started the song, but Barry sang most of the rest and they all sang the chorus. I love the pre disco sound when Barry sang in his normal voice. Majical😎 Even their sad songs put a smile on my face.
This is by far my favorite Bee Gees tune. For so many reasons.. it is one if their best melodies and arrangements, but it touches so many of my youthful memories and crushes. It us the very essence and definition of my childhood. AND I CAN STILL FEEL THE BREEZE THAT RUSHES THRU THE TREES. And I am still trying to mend my broken heart.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤Bee Gees forever.
Robin sang the first verse, Barry the other verses and of course all 3 sang the chorus. This song came about after Robin reunited with Barry and Maurice. In the late 1960s.
Asia and BJ! Love y’all’s reactions. Love this song! Early Bee Gee’s, before they put on their dancin’ shoes. Y’all gotta react to, “TO LOVE SOMEBODY”! Also an early one. Very soulful delivery by Barry, and great lyrics. Peace from Austin, Tejas!
What can you say, its another great song by The Bee Gees! Al Green did his own version of this song and I believe it is just as good. Lots of folks who love Al Green's version didn't even know The Bee Gees (not only wrote this song but) sang it too.
If you haven’t heard Immorality with Celine Dion. Written for her by Barry Gibb with the brothers backing vocals. The video of them making the song is special. Also the live performance is fantastic.

Beautiful song, sweet reaction.
At least you saved us watching the brilliant LIVE recording where many of us were in tears....
I was lucky enough to see the Bee Gees twice in concert. The first time was during a bit of a low in their career after the 60s but before their disco smash took over the world, that was jive Talkin’.
In my opinion one of the most gorgeous melodies ever written was the Bee Gees, To Love Somebody’
I don’t think enough people react to this. I see a lot of reactions to staying alive, which is understandable, but I love it when people react to their earlier works as well.
I really love your comments, so insightful and thoughtful. Thank you!
They are just amazing. Justin Timberlake once said when the BeeGees wrote songs the words always made since!!
Only time can mend a broken heart.
Robin started the song (lead) then Barry takes the lead.
This is early Brothers Gibb song; i like their early music.
They do this song live, do look it up, you will like.
Early Bee Gees. Good stuff.
Go Mavs.
Robin, Maurice and Barry Gibb. This song was recorded by Al green too and the Al green version it was used in the movie nothing hill with Julia Roberts
If your right with Christ and God your heart will never be destroyed! Great video!~
Must must do, RUN TO ME, 1967, live video. Here you'll see and hear Robin singing his own part too. It's an amazing song and one of my favs
One of my favorites from the guys.
Listen to Fanny be tender with my love. All the brothers have solo parts in it. Of course great harmonies to.
This song was actually done after the group had broken up and then reunited!!!
When they sang this after Andy Gibb died it was the ultimate tear jerker!
There are videos out there of them as kids on stage singing. They were from a very poor Australian family that moved to England to make money off the kids singing group. They actually supported the family, which is kinda sad, but it made them into great song writers and performers, and hit makers.
Al Greene did a beautiful cover of this song and it was the Bee Gee's favourite ever cover of their work. Worth a listen.
one of my favorite BGees songs..thank you!!
Gotta check out Dionne Warwick's cover of the Bee Gee's - Heartbreaker. The Bee Gees do back up on it and you'll recognize their songwriting style!
Heard this on the radio all the time, such a pretty song. My favorite, then Stayin' Alive.
I like a lot of their songs, more than I dislike. Rare for me. 50 yrs. still know the words!
One of my favorites from them.
The Bee Gees (live on the Ed Sullivan Show) singing “Words” is pretty incredible.
Up
the beegees just never missed!!👍
Every one of their slow songs feels like a warm hug, you can actually feel their brotherly love for one another when they sing
Robin on the left started the song .Barry in the middle, sang the second verse.
Love my Bee Gees
I love really the smile of Asia. It superbly compliments her beautiful face,
Yep, love that 60's Bee Gees. So good.
Yes you're right Asia, Robin on the left began singing the intro. Barry in the middle and Maurice, on the right. Robin and Maurice were twins
I remember when this song came out; my boyfriend and I had just broken up and I played this over and over, heartbroken. Love it! Watch Fanny be tender with my love, another older song but amazing!!
Love Robin's voice, he has that little cry in his voice.
Al Green does a fantastic cover of song.
Watch live AL Green ( live on Soul 1972.
Won't disappoint...
I feel it's one of his best
Love this song 😀 Asia and Bj I have a suggestion for you,Barry Manilow has hit after hit . Time in New England, Mandy and Copa cabana are just a start, check him out sometime.great voice!!!🤗
I am big fan of pre disco Bee Gees. Yall are just scratching the surface of their music. Rabbit hole is deep.
🥰🎶🥰🎶 I think Robin is singing lead at the first of the song. He’s on the left. Maurice is on the right, and the were fraternal twins.
Great pre disco song and one of the biggest selling songs of 1971.
My Aunt and Uncle love these guys my auntie still post their music after my uncle passed away to remember him 🙏🏽
What can you say, its another great song by The Bee Gees! Al Green did his own version of this song and I believe it is just as good. Lots of folks who love Al Green's version didn't even know The Bee Gees (not only wrote this song but) sang it too.
Al green is a beast with this song. Check it out.
If you haven’t heard Immorality with Celine Dion. Written for her by Barry Gibb with the brothers backing vocals. The video of them making the song is special. Also the live performance is fantastic.
I was fan of the Bee Gees long before their career took off again with the disco era.
Robin starts the song.... the one Asia thought wasn’t the lead was actually Barry, who sings most leads for the group..
É gostoso demais ouvir os Bee Gees! Lindíssima canção!❤❤❤👍👍👋👋👋👋👋👋🇧🇷
