The best clothes that will ever be made have already been made and are sitting in thrift shops or second-hand online markets! Your wardrobe is proof of that. The Paletot coat is my favorite.
I remember when I was a volunteer with a Search & Rescue Group in East Anglia. We were issued with ex - Royal Navy Duffle Coats dated 1942 ! Even so , they kept you very warm in Winter.
Proper No Twelve I did not know the army were issued a version. The best bite of British Army clothing I liked was either called the Falklands parka, or Artic parka, name varies according who you speak to. I liked the idea of the removable quilted liner, to regulate warmth.
Overcoats are simply the best things to get vintage or second hand. I got two single breasted wool coats, a corneliani and an indochino, a navy trenchcoat and a longer ankle length dark grey coat. All of these were around 50$ each and compared to the retail prices it's really hard to justify ever buying one of these new. I've read that luxury brands today such as burberry burn unsold garments in order to keep the prices high and that's another reason to avoid supporting them.
I'm a teen, but I have a collection of 3 vintage overcoats (and expanding). I love wearing overcoat because it keeps me very warm (I get cold very easily).
That's a great collection you have there, Raphael! We both share a love for outerwear and overcoats, and I just had one made for me, since I am coming to Minneapolis in less than one month from now. The weather doesn't get too cold here in Tehran, but I thought that a good overcoat would be my greatest asset during the notorious Minnesotan winters.
At least on sundays. Everday may be a bit to stressfull and does not fit in everyone lifestyle but once a week styling up properly and cooking or eating very nice :)

Great video! I've just recently bought an over coat for a thriftstore/charity shop in the UK. It cost me £10.00 and I'm very pleased with it. I knew it was a good, heavy fabric and a nice tight weave. I Googled the maker: it was made by 'Invertere', made in England and a maker that predominately made high quality sporting coats and outwear. I'm very pleased with the coat and I get a lot of compliments when I wear it. The Gentleman's gazette produces videos of the highest quality :-) There, I've said it. Tony
I would be delighted if Fort Belvedere started making some nice thick wool overcoats (specifically long double breasted ones) I searched for years looking for a long dark double breasted wool coat with a large sailor style collar (basically a peacoat but "overcoat length") eventually gave up, had to buy a vintage military airforce overcoat online. Had it dyed darker, lined it with a nice tobacco plaid lining, and had it tailor fit. Was worth it, have received dozens of compliments, but it cost me well above 1000. You'd be surprised how hard it is to find something so simple and timeless like what i described - Definitely think there would be a huge market for it.

0:58 This is why I love this channel. I thought the same. There's just something not right with modern coats and jackets, I think it's because fashion companies design their products to follow the current trends. Of course these companies need to stay in business, that's why they fit what the demand is, but at the expense of quality and style. This is the reality now. 2:11 Beautiful. No odd details that detracts from tradition.
You think clothing companies did not "follow trends" in the past? Lol

Bought a camel color topcoat a few months ago , light weight and the length is just above the knees , like it very much ! If it gets too cold out I just put on a zip up cardigan sweater underneath ! 🎩 👔
Coming from some other fashion channels, I still find it fascinating how much quality is put into your videos from the first until the last minute, content-wise and video quality-wise. Greetings from Munich!
Great looking coats!!! I love & collect old vintage coats because they were made better, endless classic looks, and better materials than today. 😀👍🏽👍🏽👍🏽
I have D'avenza coat for Harrods I got for £250 quid including alterations. It's just like the chester barrie coat listed here, except you only button up with one button. Really special and completely agree with the velvet collar, makes you stand out super nicely.
I'm liking that mink lining. I am always so cold all winter and this looks so luxurious and warm.. I would like it in a more fashion forward style though .. for 200 bucks.
For anyone who is interested in buying a real navy peacoat, make sure it is made by sterlingwear. they are the company that holds the contract for the US Navy. i recently found one at savers for 15 dollars in my size and obviously bought it. probably weighs around 12 or 13 lbs and keeps me a little too warm if i wear it over my 3 piece suits! a great buy if you like the style!
Beautiful collection! I am also inspired by Boardwalk Empire and the overall style in that era. I look forward to the cold as well because I get to wear some of my favorite coats etc.
I am encouraged to learn from Sven Raphael Schneider that good deals on classic men's overcoats can be found on Ebay. I have not found any overcoats on Ebay that I like that fit me. But I am encouraged by this video to keep trying!
I have more than 50 size 36s blazers and jackets that I've bought on ebay the past few years. An amazing collection! Now, lets' see your overcoats. Wish we needed them here in Los Angeles!
Raphael, Your Officer's Pea Coat has the DLA label which is Defense Logistics Agency headquartered a Fort Belvoir VA and the coat was from DLA Philly which procures all the uniforms for the services. I retired from the Army at DLA Ft Belvoir.
On the peacoat the pewter buttons are for chief petty officers and can be purchased from most military suppliers as changing buttons to reflect rank is pretty common.
Keeping warm is all about insulation and keeping the body heat trapped. Yes, heavy overcoats usually will do that better than lighter coats in similar material. However, nothing beats the combination of a material breaking the wind and the down as insualation - nothing beats puffiness for insulation ;-)
My mother, who was in the clothing business, told me to always look for sales. Winter clothes get marked down in the spring and vice versa. I got a Hart Schafner Marks overcoat from Nordstrom for almost half price just before the summer.
My one pushback on lighter overcoats today is that global temperatures are warming - a lighter overcoat is not only more versatile but enables layering
Vintage thriftshops in Germany usually charge much higher prices than in the USA. Just checked out the one in Hamburg, that you mentioned, a plain handkerchief alone, nothing special, costs between 20 and 35 Euro there. They have nice ties and things, though, so maybe still worth looking.
I used to find great overcoats in charity shops. Austin Reed is sadly missed for reliable British made suits. My neighbours were coatmakers at Crombie, worn by world premieres.
It's nice to see how dapper you can look by buying second hand cheap pieces that are actually high end. Thanks guys, you're making classic fashion accessible!
God I really love pieces you have in your wardrobe. I was lucky to buy a vintage light long wool overcoat for about 33 euros in the men vintage thrift store. But because it’s the only men vintage thrift store in the city, probably in whole country where I live, it’s much more difficult to buy high quality vintage clothes for good prices. Especially things like overcoats. In the regular thrift shops even I visited quite lot of them, I’ve never seen any type of overcoat to buy. eBay or Etsy are than the solution. But not the best one too. Because when the seller of thing you want isn’t from Europe, the price for shipping and also for some fees isn’t usually very low. So the final price isn’t often so nice and affordable. I don’t want to complain, just say that it’s sometimes not too easy to have high quality mens wear especially when you’re student :-D. But I’m trying it anyway and your video really help me. Thank you. Grüße aus Prag :-D.
Have you looked at Norwegian Wool brand coats? The combine an elegant wool/cashmere outer with waterproofing and down insulation hidden on the inside. Sounds like just the thing for a gentleman braving Minnesota winters.
