My Dad went from playing Football in Chicago to Rugby at Rockhurst College. My nephews are on and were on top tier football and Rugby in California. They took Georgetown with one nephew a scholarship to U of A, my other nephew just played in Vancouver. I think that the Rugby/Football mix is brilliant. Back in the late 90’s, at KU, I worked every big 8 or the non-Big 8 Rugby tournaments and drove the Golf Carts/Beer Carts and then took them to up and under at Johnny’s, the original. Awesome and creative decision by the Chiefs!

I'm a huge rugby follower and former player, living in the UK but from South Africa originally, the home of back to back rugby World Cup winners the springboks. Louis Rees Zammit is a very good rugby player but with all due respect to him and his ability he is not the best rugby winger in world rugby. I can tell you straight up now he would not be a first choice starter in the South African nationalrugby team, the new Zealand national rugby team or the French national rugby team, not as a winger anyway which is his position in rugby. He would probably be a starter in the England, Ireland and Scottish rugby team. His Welsh team finished last in this years 6 nations rugby championship.

I'm a rugby (and NFL) fan from the UK. LRZ is a top, top player. Very fast and elusive. Also, at 23, he may not even be in his prime. But, the transition from rugby to the NFL isn't easy. As an example, google Christian Wade. He was also a fast and elusive British rugby player. He scored an amazing pre-season touchdown for the Bills but never played during the regular season and is now out of the game. He's not the player LRZ is though, and came over when he was past his rugby prime. Best of luck to Louis and the Chiefs.

Seeing some of his clips running routes in pads against a defender not in pads, and I'm cautiously optimistic. His footwork and cuts were very crisp. If he makes the 53 I'm sure it'll be for special teams and gadget plays, but with him only being 23 and highly athletic, there definitely a chance for him to be a good player after some development. You've signed a very different animal. He's that quick he looks like he's jogging while burning past the opposition. His size is also deceptive. He's got a strong hand off and he's 6'3. With a full football pre-season geared more to explosiveness than rugby (where he was expected to have the stamina to run for 80 minutes on attack and defence) expect him to carry his speed with probably a few more lbs on his frame.. His biggest challenge will be learning to run routes and picking up defensive reads but once the ball is in his hand and if he hits his stride he'll be a defence's worst nightmare

LRZ is world class. And I don't say that lightly.
One thing you glossed over is that became a British Lion shortly after he turned 20. He was the youngest player selected for the Lions since 1958! This is a HUGE deal in rugby.
Every four years the best 30 or so players in England, Scotland, Wales & Ireland are picked to tour either South Africa, New Zealand or Australia. Most rugby players consider it the pinacle of their career, even above the Rugby World Cup.
Of course he's a lot to learn in American football, but he's in the right place, with the right coaches and he has the right attitude. He's not just there for a payday or because his first sport didn't work out, it's something he's wanted to do since being a kid.
If it doesn't work out then the Chiefs lose nothing and for LRZ even if he stays in the practice squad for 3 years he'll still only be 26 so could easily return to rugby.

  • @user-hs5vb6kc9o

The best part about this move is that there is literally zero downside. If he sucks nothing happens since he occupies a free spot in the practice squad.
Now, if he is actually a good enough special teams player able to earn a place in the 53 men roster that makes the chances of him becoming an actual valid player offensive player, be it at WR, RB or even TE/HB, sky rocket because it will buy him the time to develop all the skills needed for those positions.
