Indonesian learn Hrvatski. The only phrase I can say over and over again is 'trla baba lan, da joj prođe dan'. It's a beautiful language and the pronunciation is suitable for my tongue. Grammar is another level, but I like to learn more of it!
I call them impossible letters (c, ć, č, z, ž, đ) for they all sound kind of same to me, although otherwise the pronouncing is pretty much the same as in Finnish. But she made them sound so easy, so I hope this helped.
Hi! I'm a Canadian from Quebec and my girlfriend is Croatian Canadian. She really loves your approche to learning Croatian and is so impressed with your prononciation. Tank you for this helpful guide. Liked and subscribed 🤗🇭🇷🇨🇦
This is really good advice. As a native English speaker who only speaks English, I am having a very hard time with padezi. My vocabulary isn't extremely developed, and I find it so hard to just jump in and write and speak whilst making mistakes. I feel like everything I say has to be grammatically correct, and that's probably why I haven't progressed as far as I'd hope. I am starting an online Croatian course 3 days a week though, so I am very excited. I just need to learn to be okay making mistakes.
Hmmm. When I started to learn French I was like (no way / impossible!) Actually it is possible. Just Believe in Yourself. No Matter if you make mistakes. And even if some Croatians around you, they're trying to correct you...(it's just for your good) 🍀
Sinoc sam otkrila da imate youtube kanal. Svaka vam cast kako dobro pricate nas jezik, ja sam odusevljena, i imate super naglasak, nemate toliko puno onaj engleski naglasak. Sve vas se fino razumije, a nas jezik je tezak i jos 7 padeza. I jako ste lijepi, prelijepi ste i simpaticni. ❤️❤️❤️
Čitam komentare i gledajući tvoj tutorial, odlučila sam pisati na hrvatskom jer toliko ga divno pričaš, tečno, lagano.. Svaka čast na upornosti i želji za učenjem. Hrvatski jezik je zaista težak jezik. A što se tiče ovih prvih usporedba abecede na hrvatskom i engleskom jeziku koje si pokazala, preodlično. Stvarno uživam u svakom tvom videu koji dijeliš. Samo hrabro dalje i veselim se tvom sljedećem videu. P.s. Divno si opisala moj rodni grad Varaždin kada si ga posjetila. Vrati se još koji puta.🤗🤗🤗🤗
As a Croatian, I can say that this is a really good method that I'd recommend to everyone. Croatian can be difficult to master, but with this method it should be quite easy to become quite conversational. And I fully agree and confirm you shouldn't bother with difficult grammar, it will just hinder your progress. Grammar will come over time.
😁 Pozdrav!

I am sure you would be able to understand my comment if it was written in Croatian but since you've shown so much respect to our Croatian language I thought it would be nice of me to do the same for you. Thank you so much.I always watch your videos. It's very good for me because I'm learning English and Croatian languages too. I have an English and Croatian teacher but these languages are very different. My English knowledge is "intermediate" and Croatian is beginner. I don't give up.
Great video. Thanks for the tips. My wife and I speak Croatian but our kids don't. We plan to travel and stay in Croatia for a year. You've given me some ideas how to get my kids started learning the language.
Djeca kao takva brzo uče jezike. Ja sam npr rođena u dijaspori, iako već dugo živim u Hrvatskoj. Moji su me prvo naučili hrvatski i prije nego što sam trebala u predškolsku mater me naučila njemački. Kaže da sam ga savladala u nekoliko mjeseci. Tako da mislim da će i tvoja dica brzo naučiti jezik. I lipo je znat svoj maternji 😊 još ako se budu družili s djecom gdje već budete živili , pohvatat će hrvatski još brže 😉
I am polish and I can say that from the first point of view croatian is very similar to polish ( " I drink" is like 99% the same like in polish ) but also includes tricky words - I mean the same pronunciation but different meaning Like for example "I love" in croatian is almost the same like "I prefer" in polish and "I eat " in croatian is almost the same like "I drive" in polish. I am going to visit Croatia soon and you encouraged me to learn the basics. Kind regards for you and all Croatians !
I'm so in love with the language and the country, I've heard a lot about the country and I'm visiting Croatia for the first time next January for a volunteering program I'll join, I'll do my best to speak Croatian once I'm there. Wish me luck🤞

Why would anyone give a thumbs down to this video? Those people are either mean or competition. Sarah, I was an exchange student in US back in 1987/88. I approve of your method. The most important thing is to expose yourself to the vocabulary. Words, many words. Verbs are the most important. Nouns are second, adjectives are at the bottom of the list. Good job! I hope to meet you. We live in the same city.
im glad because i have been trying to learn my grandparents language for years, but kept giving up realising that i was never enough around it to pick up on it and that the only chance i had was when i was at their place, this will make it a little easier and then i can ask them more and more slowly the more i learn

Sarah, your video is SO helpful! You speak to some really basic guidelines ("grammar in doses", etc.) but it makes sense. You seem to share a "common sense is not so common" approach, great for someone like me who tends to overcomplicate things. Just learning biti and imati in the present with the subject pronouns, and the adverbs of frequency and some simple expressions of time, can already take you a long way. Many, many thanks!
I am very happy to have found your channel! You are great, I am impressed! We love your videos because my boyfriend is learning Croatian and your presentation is great. If you can, just keep going. I’m from Chicago living with Croatian wife , thank you so much for everything you have explained to me... I really thinking about moving to Karlovac but I little scared... Money ? Language ? Staying busy ? A ton of questions
Karlovac is small town, about 50 000 people, 35 miles from main city Zagreb. Karlovac is mainly known as "City on 4 rivers". Don't know much else since I rarely go there. I presume that buying a house there is cheap, especially relative to American prices (judging by Property Brothers show 😄). English is second language for everybody who went to school in 1990 and forward, so that can set your expectations about communication.

I love your video's! Trying to learn croatian because my boyfriend is croatian :) I already learned a language almost like you so this will definitely work for me! Thanks. Also can you maybe suggest a few series in croatian or youtubers so I can practise hearing? 😊 would be very helpful :)
Hmmm, for series in Croatian, try to search on RUclips - that might be your best bet! I know you can find almost all cartoons in Croatian (dubbed), and cartoons usually have simpler language, so that might be a good way, too!
Oh, this is so good. We have had property in Croatia for 15 years but for an older person who was never allowed to learn a 2nd language, it has been almost an impossible task. This year I got to spend more time there and I am determined to learn so I can speak with my neighbors and people on the island. I was tripping up on all the things you said to leave well alone. I shall watch more videos to try and improve along with the learning guide I am using. Thanks.
You should do a Q&A about your story on how you came to be in Croatia and everything! I’m also living in Croatia, I’m from America but I’ve been here for almost 3 years now! It is really comforting to hear an English speaker sharing their stories and experiences with Croatia and the language it makes me feel less alone knowing there’s other expats here haha😂 thanks for sharing! 😊
Not a bad idea about the Q & A. We'll definitely consider it for an upcoming video :) Yes, I also love hearing other expats' stories, it's comforting for me, too :)
Thank you sooooo much for putting out this video and showing this method to people. I learned English the same way (and now I'm level C1, both in written and spoken english)! this method does actually work, and - for me at least made learning much less frustrating than learning it in school for example. Currently, I'm learning Croatian, and this video reminded me how much fun it is to actually learn a language, so thank you very much again! Or puno hvala 😏😄🥰
Thank you so much. This was very motivating. I grew up with my dad who spoke some words, but I never became conversational. I am motivated to learn more. It is a goal to become (at least) conversational. I just found your videos and I was so impressed with your Croatian. Brings me back to my childhood when my Baba and the rest of her generation used to speak. I love your videos.
I love your approach Sarah! I've learned conversational Croatian by ear over 22 years but now I'm living here I'm trying to learn it grammatically and I'm really struggling. Even though I'm a TEFL teacher I agree with you that the easiest way to start with Croatian is to cram vocabulary first and then try to find a competent person to teach you the grammar. I think I'll start translating my 8 year old daughter's storybooks. That's a great piece of advice! Lijepi pozdrav.
I am half Croatian, living in Canada and do not speak Croatian anywhere near as well as you do. I have no problem reading Croatian but get lost when I don’t understand a couple of words in some conversations ! I sing a couple of songs on RUclips and wonder if I sound like a foreigner to Croatian born people ! Now I am waiting for my daughter to wake up , we are going to attempt to make Oblande for the first time !
Hi! thank you so much, I found this video very helpful to know what to try and what not to try. I want for a friend I think it would make her happy if I could also speak her language! Much love! ❤
Just a reminder, Ć and Č are not ch in english, but i understand it is hard for non native speaker. Đ and DŽ are also not the same. Ć (Đ) is very soft, Č (DŽ) is very hard. Ch in english would be sometning between Ć and Č, and j as in jam would be between Đ and DŽ. And also in croatian alphabet č comes before ć, dž before đ.
Hi Sarah. I have already followed a few of your videos and I like them a lot. I have no specific reason for learning Croation but I just would like to know a bit about it. Firstly I have already understood that it ranges under the difficult languages in Europe (I speak 6 already). About your method, it is not so unconventional. It's almost the way kids learn their mothertonge.I guess the first impoortant thing is to listen, so I would ask people to speak slowly. As they are speaking now, I cannot even distinguish each word!! Please be so goiod to continue this series. Thanks.
Thank you! My mother spoke Croatian and I grew up not learning any of it but I decided I might go visit there and I would love to be able to speak a little bit. This was a really great video with lots of information so thank you I screenshot the alphabet and the conjugation of the “ to be” verb! Thank you 😊
This is great system to learn any new/foreign language. My teacher in elementary school (40 years ago) used it to teach us German, and later I applied it to learn self-learn Spanish and Portuguese. Personal Pronouns, To Be, To Have...once you learn how to use these (+ learn how to read alphabet to expand the vocabulary) - you have a foundation to converse in any language. I loved your initial instuctions to your viewers not to get intimidated with imperfections in grammar. Way too many adults never learn the new language as they are affraid to make basic mistakes that other pple would consider inappropriate and stupid. I hope my wife (Brazilian) will start following your channel and instructions about Croatian language and experience of the country from the perspective of the non-Croatian, curious person.
My grandparents were born in Croatia. In May I will be traveling to their home town to research genealogy, and then will travel around the Central Dalmatian coast. Your videos are perfect for me. Thanks so much for posting them.😊
I LOVE your channel. Your personality, how fun you and your husband are together on your vlogs ( Ofcourse your kids are adorable and so well behaved) and the content! Thank you SO very much for all you share! We just found your channel and are binge watching to learn all we can for our Croatia trip next week. I love learning languages, ok words anyway, before a trip to a new country since it’s so fun to try and converse or at-least understand a little and feel it’s just respectful and fun to try. You’re great at presenting all of this and I hope I do you proud as I venture to markets and cafes next week! Thank you!!!!!!
You are such a tremendous resource, Sarah!! I think so many language instructors here focus on the grammar first which is a big mistake. I am going to follow your methods and am confident I will finally improve. Though the phrase and story writing might not happen 😉.
Thank you so much for making these videos! My partner is from Zagreb and I wanted to learn the language since visiting last summer. Your videos have really helped in showing clear steps to take in becoming fluent, I couldn't find this kind of advice from a native English speaker anywhere else. One question I have is, how long did it take you to reach a conversational level? Grammer not included. Hvala!
I'm so happy you're finding them helpful! I also found that when I was learning, there weren't many videos or anything that were very helpful. I think it took around a year or so to get comfortable speaking about everyday things (with zero grammar! I literally didn't even attempt to learn the cases until after that point... I spoke completely case-less! lol)

Hello Sarah! Thanks a lot for great video! Greetings from Toronto! Hopefully we shall be in Porec around next Saturday. Dobriy Dan ! Cheers! P. S. Subscribed!
1. Better example for DŽ is pronouncing G in magician. Example with J is ok, but only if it's on the beginning of the eng. word. 2. Verbs in croatian are divided in seven categories and each category has seven classes. You can find this only in grammar (book). There is explained how and why each verb has its ending in present, no exceptions. Furthermore, croatian has only 4 irregular verbs: biti, htjeti, ići and spati (shorter version of spavati, but spavati is a regular verb).

@@RoyalCroatianTours Sounds great! When you used the app Memrise, did you learn Slovenian? It doesn't have the option for Croatian. I know there are some differences like gladan/lacen = hungry
Thank you for this video, as a Filipino, it will really be a big help on starting to learn croatia since I just started working here.
Your approach is awesome sarah- especially when you deemphasize the grammar/cases etc/ to build little at a time/ keep at it/ and you are even a better example as you learned from scratch-
Appreciate all your help and encouragement-

Im happy when someone from other country atleast says ''hi'' in my language, then i can't describe you how am I happy when the person actually learns it like you did :D
Aww, thanks Nikola!

Indonesian learn Hrvatski. The only phrase I can say over and over again is 'trla baba lan, da joj prođe dan'. It's a beautiful language and the pronunciation is suitable for my tongue. Grammar is another level, but I like to learn more of it!
G - in English it sometimes sounds like Đ (gemini) , in Croatian it's always G (gas)
That's true :)
I call them impossible letters (c, ć, č, z, ž, đ) for they all sound kind of same to me, although otherwise the pronouncing is pretty much the same as in Finnish. But she made them sound so easy, so I hope this helped.
mh husband is croatian, and we recently visited croatia. i am very interested in learning the language . this is very helpful.
Hi! I'm a Canadian from Quebec and my girlfriend is Croatian Canadian. She really loves your approche to learning Croatian and is so impressed with your prononciation.
Tank you for this helpful guide.

Thank you so much! ❤️❤️
Hmmm.
When I started to learn French I was like (no way / impossible!)
Actually it is possible.
Just Believe in Yourself. No Matter if you make mistakes.
And even if some Croatians around you, they're trying to correct you...(it's just for your good)

Sinoc sam otkrila da imate youtube kanal. Svaka vam cast kako dobro pricate nas jezik, ja sam odusevljena, i imate super naglasak, nemate toliko puno onaj engleski naglasak. Sve vas se fino razumije, a nas jezik je tezak i jos 7 padeza. I jako ste lijepi, prelijepi ste i simpaticni. ❤️❤️❤️
Čitam komentare i gledajući tvoj tutorial, odlučila sam pisati na hrvatskom jer toliko ga divno pričaš, tečno, lagano.. Svaka čast na upornosti i želji za učenjem. Hrvatski jezik je zaista težak jezik. A što se tiče ovih prvih usporedba abecede na hrvatskom i engleskom jeziku koje si pokazala, preodlično. Stvarno uživam u svakom tvom videu koji dijeliš. Samo hrabro dalje i veselim se tvom sljedećem videu. P.s. Divno si opisala moj rodni grad Varaždin kada si ga posjetila. Vrati se još koji puta.🤗🤗🤗🤗

Same. It sucks because I spoke it as a kid and forgot it because my family decided to move to canada. Atleast my pronunciation is good.
dijelim ovo sad sa svojim frendovima ircima :D hvala na ovome :) pozz od hrvata iz Dublina :) cheers :)
Hvala! Pozdrav iz Zagreba!!
Thanks! Yes, the grammar can wait! It's important to get speaking :D
You'd be a great teacher! Thank you for put effort and learn our language. Even better - you motivate others to learn Croatian. Nice of you.
Thank you Branislav!
Impressive! Coming from a primary school teacher, those are actually some amazing methods. Thank you for sharing this. Love your channel!

Djeca kao takva brzo uče jezike. Ja sam npr rođena u dijaspori, iako već dugo živim u Hrvatskoj. Moji su me prvo naučili hrvatski i prije nego što sam trebala u predškolsku mater me naučila njemački. Kaže da sam ga savladala u nekoliko mjeseci. Tako da mislim da će i tvoja dica brzo naučiti jezik. I lipo je znat svoj maternji 😊 još ako se budu družili s djecom gdje već budete živili , pohvatat će hrvatski još brže 😉

I am learning to speak Croatian and you have been so helpful!

Svaka cast Sarah!
Please do more language videos because it’s so encouraging that you managed to learn it.
Thank you so much. I really like your way of starting out. I’m hoping I can learn a few things for my trip in 4 months 😊❤️
This is the video that is worth watching about learning Croatian. Blessings!
im glad because i have been trying to learn my grandparents language for years, but kept giving up realising that i was never enough around it to pick up on it and that the only chance i had was when i was at their place, this will make it a little easier and then i can ask them more and more slowly the more i learn

You're doing amazing with your Croatian! I'm actually someone from Zagreb who plans on moving to Canada soon, and your channel just warms my heart! ❤
Awww, thank you so much!!! :)
As ukrainian learning Croatian with grammar is easier because ukrainian cases and conjugations = croatian cases and conjugations :)

Respect!!!! Wooow so cool! Greetings from Zagreb! 🇭🇷❤
Thank you 🙌
your tips are great, thanx, you encouraged me
Thank you sooooo much for putting out this video and showing this method to people.
My mum is Croatian and im trying to learn the language so I can talk to my relatives there for once lol
thank you this has helped a lot
Thank you so much. This was very motivating. I grew up with my dad who spoke some words, but I never became conversational. I am motivated to learn more. It is a goal to become (at least) conversational. I just found your videos and I was so impressed with your Croatian. Brings me back to my childhood when my Baba and the rest of her generation used to speak. I love your videos.
Otkrila sam maloprije kanal. Odlično pričate i pišete hrvatski. Čak Vam i Hrvat zavidi. 🥰
Hvala puno Ivana :)
Thanks so much!! Yes, I really think the most important thing is grow your vocab! Your daughter's books are a perfect way to do that!! :D
Oh, yes I know what you mean! Reading and writing is easier than speaking because conversation moves so quickly!! Enjoy the Oblande :)
Hi! thank you so much, I found this video very helpful to know what to try and what not to try.
Thanks.
Thank you Sonja! :) Very nice that you're learning Croatian. You must have a really great ear for languages :)
I TOTALLY agree with this method. I am a teacher and this is the way I am learning Croatian. Brilliant!
Thank you! My mother spoke Croatian and I grew up not learning any of it but I decided I might go visit there and I would love to be able to speak a little bit. This was a really great video with lots of information so thank you I screenshot the alphabet and the conjugation of the “ to be” verb! Thank you 😊
This is a great help... thanks!!
Bravo Sara!!👏👏👏👏👏
Awww, thanks Katherine!!! You're so sweet! You can do it, and I promise, the story writing is fun!!! No joke!

Cheers! P. S. Subscribed!
Thanks so much for this, I think this is going to be really helpful for me, I'm going to follow your pattern :)
Very interesting points! Thanks so much for sharing :)
