It was really surprising for me as a Bulgarian to find out that i can naturally understand big part of a conversation in Croatian. Both languages have a lot of similar words. And I'm sure that if you come to Bulgaria and speak Croatian most of the people will understand you. You use latin letters and we use cyrillic letters for writing but the pronunciation of some of the words is very similar or even the same. If we take as an example the days of the week we only use different word for Tuesday (vtornik). The other days of the week are pronounced on 95% the same as in Croatian.

Hi Ines, I like the way you teach Croatian. I'm learning a lot from your videos, and your English is perfect. I'm British, and we are notorious for being a nation of language duffs! I was just wondering, would you be able to do a video on Croatian month names? What I have noticed is that they are very different from the month names in English and most other European languages (even Serbian, which is a related language). What they mean, and how they are derived. Many thanks!

January =Sječanj (this "nj" at the end is like first vocal in word New York)
It comes from the verb "sjeći" means "to cut" in English. In the old times during the winter people cut the wood.
February =Veljača (I'm not quite shure but I think the orgin comes from the arhaic word "vejavica"wich means "stormy wind with snow")
March = Ožujak ("ž" is like first vocal in the French name Jean)I don't know the orgin.
April = Travanj ( "trava" means the grass, so it's symbolise time when grass begin to grow.)
May = Svibanj (again I don't know exactly the orgin, but I believe is connected with some plant)
Juny = Lipanj ( "lipa" means "lime-tree" connected with time when this tree is flowering.
July = Srpanj ("srp" means "sickle" - time of harvest)
August= Kolovoz (it's consists of two words "kolo" = "wheel" or "wagon" and "voziti" is verb "to drive".
Connected with the time when people drive back home the crop from the fields.
September = Rujan (derivate from arhaic word "rujiti" =ripening, maturing (of fruits)
October =Listopad (again two words "list"=leaf, "pad"=fall - time when leafs are falling from trees)
Novenber=Studeni ("studen" = cold, chill, coldness)
December= Prosinac (only connection is verb "prositi"=beg, but in same time means propose marriage to a girl, (in our language we say "beg for the hand of girl") probably the time of the year when people get married most often.)

🇭🇷 History of Croatian language is very different ❗ compared to other south slavic nations. Until 19th century croatian language was separate language, it had nothing to do with other south slavic languages. But Mad Croats decided to unite croatian language with other south slavic languages in order to create the same Standard literary language for all South Slavic nations to achieve impossible mad south slavic unity. 😢😢😢 We regret that so much today.
Croatian man Ljudevit Gaj in 1830 created croatian Latin alphabet called Gajica, later ALL south slavic nations including Slovenia adopted croatian Latin alphabet.
In ❤1558 Croatian language was named as Mother of all slavic languages, croatian language then became one of the official languages at Western universities of that time.
The first Croatian dictionary was published in 1595, the first Croatian Grammar book was published in 1604, ❤❤❤ Croats are the first Slavic people to publish a book in their own language in 1483.
Other south slavic nations published their first dictionaries several centuries later compared to Croatia.
Croatian language and literature went through Renaissance and Enlightenment periods something that other south slavic nations never experienced because they were never part of the Latin catholic civilisation in the first place.
🇭🇷 Ikavski is still spoken in southern Croatia. 🇺🇦 Ikavski is also spoken in Ukraine today.
Why? Ancient pagan White Croatia was located in Ukraine. In Western Ukraine today still exists an ancient settlement of Stilsko, capital city of pagan Croats. Croatia is named after Croats who came from ancient White Croatia in the 7th and 8th century.

It's sad that most South Slavic languages lost their old Slavic word for "the second", which was vŭtory / въторъı . Between the 10. and 13. century in most western South Slavic dialects the preposition v / vŭ turned first into v / va , and later into "u", while the harder y / ъı turned into a simple i / и , so that "the second" came to be pronounced as utori . "utorak" is derived from this sadly lost word, but it would be actually logically more coherent if it was reintroduced into all ex- yu South Slavic languages as an additional synonym for drugi / други .
Plno pozdrava. Jaz vam vse dobro želju.

Every day sentences and dialogs would be nice... On journey, at home, at the restaurant , to buy some " voce i povrce" at the station, with the car ( "benzin" ) ...

For me the rolling r is really difficult to pronounce. I can do it sometimes, but only rarely.
I can make a rolling r at the back of my mouth, but i know that's not quite correct and it also sounds much different.
When i try to pronounce it the correct way it often sounds like a mixture of the English "r"-sound and a "d"-sound.
Do you have any tips for me to improve my pronunciation?

Yes, rolling the r is a skill that is often difficult to master. I myself can't pronounce the German r correctly, no matter how hard I try 😂 Croatian r, just like Spanish one, is pronounced in the front of the mouth, right behind the upper front teeth.

@@some_random_human I know some German. I studied it in school. I haven't actively used it in years so I lost a lot. But, I love German! It's a fun language to speak.
