A 75-grain 5.56x45 NATO bullet that moves over half a mile per second...
That is amazing.
Good choice in using multiple barrel lengths and 100 yard accuracy test. 👍🏻
Thanks. I'm glad to work with vendors who help me do these, so I can provide as much info as possible..
My 1:7 twist 16” barrel loves this stuff, very accurate. Great demo👍
A 75 or 77gr 5.56 round going 2700 fps at the muzzle is pretty effective out to 500 yards. Far better and harder hitting than m193 or m855.
I'm seeing velocities of 2825 on average with 75gr HPBTs over 23.5 gr of IMR 8028 XBR and CCI 400 primers. I forget the OAL off the top of my head, but they're pretty close to max length for mag feeding. Holds sub .75" at 100. 22.7 gave me the best accuracy with one hole groupings, and that's probably where I'll continue loading them from here on out. I got greedy with speed. They hold very true out to 500, which is as far as I have access to on a regular basis. I plan on trying them out to 1k later this year. 20" 1-7 twist HBAR for reference.
BLC-2 does very well for these projectiles too.
Yah this load is designed for a 1 in 7 or 1 in 8 AR but I've found it to be pretty good for the money 👍👍
I have a pws 11.85 in 1 :8 twist and this ammo performs phenomenally. My favorite hands down for my platform
Have you used it on whitetail deer? Gotta switch up my hunting style and I think the lightweight of an AR will work best if I can effectively kill at 150 yards!!
@@411adaptivegolf yes it will down a white tail
I got this ammo to see how good itll run out of my 1:9. Looks like a great bullet for plinking and also hunting. *Edit* I managed to miss the twist rate you said in the video. I mean, 1:9 with 75 is great! A sub moa group is amazing, even if you are novice. You did a great job, man!
Yep 1:9
Optimized for 16 inch looks like
Yeah it gets my vote for a stash of 500 lol most of us run 14.5-16" barrels prety nice to have a round specific for the length
I've only fired two 5 shot groups with the Frontier 5.56 75gr ammo. The first measured 0.79 inches, and the second measured 1.09 inches. These were shot at 100 yards from a PSA 18in 1:7 223 Wylde stainless barrel off a bipod and rear bag. This barrel has less than 100 rounds through it.
straight and to the point, thanks for the video
Thank, you!
I think this stuff would be perfect in my 1/8 16” barrel. Similar rounds have gotten my quarter sized groups at 100yds. But man this stuff seems like a great deal.
I have a 1:8 10.5” barrel the company said they recommend75r boattail ammo556
I wish I had several more boxes of this stuff.
Love it in my 1:8 16"
I picked up 1100 rds of this stuff recently. Maybe it's just me but it's getting REALLY hard to find compared to all the other 5.56 that's on the shelves right now.
Edit: I have a 18" Mk12 "modern clone" with a 1:7 twist barrel and a 2" AFAB chambered brake/FH. It loves the heavy bullets.
Same here...cant find enough though
Buffman great video it appears as this box of Frontire 5.56 didn't measure up to the spec as far as velocity goes. Hornady's 75 Gr BTHP Match 223 Remington load is rated at 2790 FPS. Even from the 20 inch AR this load failed the velocity test.. From the 22 inch this load exceed 2790 FPS but came up short on 2860 FPS. I wouldn't be surprised if Hornady used a 26 inch barrel to get 2860 FPS, keep up the great testing.
I can never buy a new 5.56 loading without checking out your review first. Currently, Oct 26, 2020 this is one of the cheapest options available, literally.
Found it for 77 cents per round on ammoseek. I can't even find M193 for under 85 cents.
If that's all you can find, this won't do you wrong.
@@BuffRANGE all there is for less out there at the moment is M855 in bulk. 🤢🤮 also saw frangible or reman 55g stuff. I think I'd take the reman 55 grain over those other 2 choices. Lol. Frontier 75 BTHP is clearly the best choice.
But yeah anytime I am looking at new stuff I check here and then see if Andrew from Arfcom has a gel video.
Agreed. Even today you can get it for .90/round, and costs have skyrocketed even since your post 6 months ago. Just picked up a few boxes.
@@BrewCityRider Found it for $15 per 20 in a local store today. Hopefully it'll keep going down.
Thanks, great vid!
I literally just picked up 500 rounds of this stuff the last two days I love it!
Picked up a box today at my local fud gun shop I figured that the hollow points would be good for home protection putting it through my 11inch CZ Bren 2 ms.
So here's an interesting fact for most people that they may or may not know what their AR-15. 1×12 twist rate is going to be at best accuracy with 55 grain ammunition and 1x9 does best with a mix of low grain bullet weight like 55 to 62 at its highest and holds accuracy. However whenever you get to anything higher this is why the military switch to 1×8 and 1x7 twist. At longer ranges even with your 20 inch barrel which is recommended for maximum powder burn on your 223/556 you're getting maximum accuracy with the heavier grain bullets using 1x8 which will allow you to use 62 grain-75 grain or with a 1x7 62 grain-77 grain. It said due to the research I've seen that any of these barrels can launch projectiles somewhat accurately for the average person so long as you're not shooting a 10 inch barrel and trying to get hits with it out at 75 yards. However if you're shooting at least a 14 and a half inch barrel which is the standard size of an M4 or a 16 inch barrel which is a civilian legal him for length this is where you're going to see your twist rates with bullet grain weights matter most, supposedly based on civilian and Military research your higher grain bullets are going to do better with a 1 and 7 twist rate and be more accurate before starting to tumble at longer ranges the other twist rates. Interestingly shooting a 55 grain out of a 20" barrel with a 1x7 twist at greater distances will cause it to have nowhere near the stability that it needs due to the higher twist rate.
Awesome buff man thanks for getting this test done so quickly this ammo just came out. Thank you!!
Great video thank you for sharing
Thanks for watching!
One of the only vids I can find testing this load. During these crazy ammo days it's one of the few match 5.56 loads I can still find. Out of my mk12 clone 18" dmr 1-8 barrel, I'm routinely getting sub moa. I printed a .68" 5 shot group at 100yds on my 4th string. Out of 5 strings the largest group was 1.35" and it was my first one. As well as it shot the Federal gold medal 69gn was sub moa for all 4 strings of 5 and was more consistent. But, alas it was the last box I had.
I chrono'd my 75gr frontier ammo yesterday and only got 2570fps. 16" 1:8 ar. 75deg 900ft alt. My dope to 500yrds supports that velocity. I'm surprised there is that much difference between our results.
Same Lot #?
Sorry, I didn't keep my empty boxes. Now I wish I did.
edit- I have one box left. I'll check the # tonight.
A gel test would be nice
Gel tests I've seen on other channels with this ammo have had absolutely brutal wound channels.
I paid $7.99 for a few boxes (1,000) rounds of this stuff is that good? I think .40 cents a round for 75 grain HP BT “match” ammo from Lake City is a pretty good deal these days!
what
@@sarahnikas1344 WHEN???
Yes. If you tried to buy it now you're looking at about a 80c to $1.10 a round. feelsbadman
Lake City? Does Hornady use LC brass?
I paid 17.99 for a box of 20. Yes. You got a good deal.
The 62 gr is tight with an 18" 1/7 223 Wylde. I had 8 of 10 easily inside a quarter at 100 yds. 75 grain was 2nd best. 68 Ok, 55 not good at all.
Can you test this in gel?
Good video👍
Over years I tested many different version of Hornady ammo. At some point I was interested in 75gr Superformance Match and tested it extensively. I could NEVER get velocities or accuracy they claimed. One of my favorite ARs is 20 inch HBAR SS 3R barrel with 1 in 8 twist. IMI razor core 77gr and BH OTM 77gr were leaving Hornady in the dust. I get 2800fps at 60deg and 45%RH for IMI and BH. Hornady... not even close. From 16 inch HBAR in 1 in 9 chrome lined WW AR15 in the same weather IMI was doing 2720fps while BH was going 2708fps. Hornady 2680fps. I could never match accuracy of BH or IMI with Hornady ammo. Both IMI and BH print under 2 inch at 200 yards from my 1 in 9 HBAR. From 20 inch HBAR it is 1.75inch or better at 200 yards. Hornady is consistently over that in both rifles.
I just don't understand why is this considered match ammo when well made standard military 5.56mm heavy ammo destroys Hornady in every aspect.
Hornady in my experience is company that overstates its 5.56mm ammo specifications but under-deliver. The worst kind of supplier you want to deal with.
This is not that same ammo, their frontier line is actually made by lake City, it's military grade ammunition.
Good looking ammo!
So my question is for the military guys or hunters ..... Would you use this heavier round 75 g at 2700 ft or use a 55 or 62 grain at 3,000 fps for KnockOut power with the .556?
If 5.56 was your only gun and you could pick any round from 50 grain to 85 grain polymer tip , soft point , etc What would you choose at 200 yards ???
.
Please answer USA military guys, we here in Australia value your opinions in America ...... Thanks ...
Not military but I run the 75 gr for pigs and whitetail deer here in Georgia it puts them in the dirt pretty quick
A lot of the decisions depend on what the bullet composition is like, a 62gr m855 is likely one of the worst choices, large problem within pass through, and last I checked most 4 and 2 legged troublemakers aren't wearing welding steel, but I believe federal makes a 62 grain controlled expansion (either soft point or hollow I cant remember which) that is well received for the effectiveness on game up to medium sized within reasonable distances, usually within 150 yards (~135 meters). So I would go with a dedicated round for hunting whatever game you are needing it for, the heavier weights will have more range of effectiveness because they will hold onto energy longer, and I know there are some very long lines of sight in az, but I would still stay within 200 yards for humane kill. It could very well work outside of that, but you must make sure shot placement is perfect, .22 has killed elephants with exceptional shot placement (a major artery underneath an "armpit" according to a African hunter) but its massively underpowered for hunting elephants.
@@williambell7763 Thanks for reply...
I have a Colt A4 - 20 inch barrel 1/7 twist.
Trying to find the perfect grain weight, bullet material and velocity at 100 yards is my goal. The polymer tipped 64 grain Winchester Deer round is what I decided on, but I wish there was a 75 grain version ..
Its finding that perfect storm of speed, size and material .... I've heard a 55 grain going 3200 can do more damage than a 308 round going 2200 but seems counter intuitive ....
@@fluff2001 A heaver round that you might want to look at is mk262 mod 1, if you can find it down there it's a pretty effective round out to maybe 200 yards (for what I'd call a safe shot on a good sized deer, not in accuracy and killing power). It's a 77grain open tip round, it would definitely drop a white tail, and I'd feel pretty safe on using it on wild hogs too, maybe up to 300 lbs at closer distances. Here's a pretty good ballistic examination of it, that same guy has a few more hunting .223 he has looked at. But at 100 yds the 64 grain is probably plenty with deer sized game, I'm not sure of all the wildlife in Austraila though, so I cant say it's the safest choice for you though. And I'd still reccomend the controlled expansion over fragmenting especially for larger game you'd might come across.

@@williambell7763 Thanks, I found some IMI 77 grain Razor Core and even an 85 grain HTBP like the mk262 as you suggested. I may test on a Kango ......
That’s one loud ass ammo
55 grain works a little better with 1:9 twist. 62 grain to... I think 75 grain either/or 1:7 or 1:8 (both are ideal), 80+ would take 1:7. just a helpful input, no critique meant. that maybe why they were short.
Agree, heavier bullet stabilizes better with 1:7 twist.
Gel test plz
Check the headspace on that PAP pistol. If you're getting up to 100 FPS variation with a mean deviation of 48 FPS, it's clearly not locking up tightly.
Or it could be load variation coupled with loads that are not optimized for short barrels. Standard Deviation in other loads have been as good as 10 fps in that gun.
2:29 am i high or do i see a bug crawling on his back
That'd be a bug there :D

Please don't take this as unappreciative of your video bc I am BUT; what's up with the 1/9 barrels dude? Not a bad thing for the 55 ammo. It's just that I would guess that most of your viewers will be using 1/7 barrels maybe 1/8 here or there but 9? Off the top of my head I know two guys that use 1/9 barrels lol. Just something that kinda threw me off watching this is all; either way thanks for the review!
The Stag is almost 10yrs old. Got it back when I was getting into it. The m85 pap only came that way. The 20” was donated :). The 22 was only offered in 1/9. Trying to work with some AR manufacturers to get some 1/7 Guns.
Whiskey Tango Many Many Rifles out there with a 9" twist rate. The demonstration gives the viewers an idea of the ammo. I know many people, myself included, who have 1:9 rifles. No one I know has thrown any away yet. Love my 1:8. He didn't use gel and didn't test long range groups and didn't use a sled and... Use your head.
Tracey Clay ok douche bag. I was respectful in my comment, thanked him for the review and liked his reply.
I am using my head. Many people out there like to be really particular about the ammo they use and find one that is a perfect/accurate as can be fit for their rifle. Sure many people have a 1/9 barrel but MOST do not. Therefore MOST people who are looking for a video about how this round will perform in their rifle will not get the MOST out of this video seeing as how it won't apply to what MOST people have.
Hey did you know that MOST people don't like "that guy" who insults people for petty bullshit. MOST people especially don't like "that guy" who is insulting someone for asking a question, especially when its constructive.
Now guess what "guy" you are?
Fucking loser.
Tracey Clay negative... Bud! I know when I'm being attacked and when that happens I drop nukes, I won't dial anything down, that's for those who don't have conviction. My question was completely respectful and you decided to chime in with your bullshit and tell me to "use my head".
You're just another little shit who decided that manners could be disregarded bc you were an anonymous person behind a keyboard.
Well, I see you, and I don't succumb to that bullshit.
Be a gentleman, be polite, and when you see someone in the wrong have the courage to call it out when you see it. There. Since you weren't taught those values I'll teach them to you... Bud.
1in8 my friend..... loves 62 or 60 somthing grain shit and is a jack of all trades but 77 or more like 80 or 85 gr get a 1in7
Should do just fine in a 14.5 bcm
Any chance to get a Gel test on this round? Thanks!
Didn't AR15.com or Chopping Block do one?
@@BuffRANGE I will check it out, thanks.
Great video, im glad you used a bunch of barrel lengths. Out of all the rounds you shot did you have any primer pockets blow out? That’s something ive heard of but im wondering if it was just one lot or maybe someones wonkey rifle.
I have not had any primer issues on this stuff.
@Buffman - R.A.N.G.E.
is this ammo reliable for self defense? Why is frontier cheaper than the others? I want to buy but if I'm going to end up buying the imi anyway I want to put the money towards the imi. Thanks for your help I've been stacking ppu m193 because of you👍🏻
IMO yes. The 75gr T2 bullet used in this load is ideal for self defense. I'd have to ask Hornady why it's cheaper. Could be just the amount they have produced?
It’s cheaper because the Frontier line has the Hornady bullets but is loaded at Lake City
It seems that 1/9 twist is effecting the velocity of the round on the 20 inch barrel...maybe a 1/7 would be better for a 75 grain...idk...maybe not
Barrel twist for the most part has very little effect on velocity.
@@BuffRANGE yeah i kinda realized that halfway through typing but figured I go ahead and post anyway to see if anyone could clear that up for me. Typically they calculate the stated velocity from a "standard" 20" barrel for 5.56/.223 (I've found) so I guess that ammo is a little weaker than what Frontier states. I'm curious bc I just bought like 800 rounds of that same stuff and am wondering what kind if velocity I'm getting from an 11.5". Thanks!
TROW 4 of them away and it will be pretty darn close to itself...
I just purchased some of this ammo.
I run this out of my 18 inch stainless.223 wylde barrel
I had to check twice. I thought this was a 7.62x39 video
Have you tried this in gel?
I have not..
What was the precision (the tightness of the group) with the 10-inch barrel?
I only measure the 22” for best case
@@BuffRANGE Thanks.
What’s the difference between Hornady BTHP Match t2? Are they all t2?
The "Match" could be using higher quality standards, different powder, etc. If it has the cannelure and is recent it should be "T2" www.ar15.com/media/mediaFiles/2207/75950253-B272-455A-BECA-4495C7CCB7C7-484901.jpg
@@BuffRANGE thank you sir for your prompt response and the link!
If you grip the front end you will cut that group in half.
how so?
Buffman - R.A.N.G.E.
I had the same type of vertically strung groups, and putting a firm grip on the front and holding the rifle like I did in the field shrunk my groups in half. Try it, it mite work for you too.
Huge velocity spread, its gonna string like crazy at longer ranges.
rossomeness what the hell are you talking about
What he means is that as you start to push the range beyond 300 yards, the different velocities are going to hit high/low as well as be more/less wind drift because of the different time of flight and how long the wind pushes on the bullet.
How would this round do in a 16" 1/7 twist AR?
the 1:7 would help stabilize it better, and possibly provide better accuracy.
@@BuffRANGE awesome! Any other ammo you would recommend? I'm fairly new to the AR platform.
