I always like some "real world" tough guy doesn't like 380 acp because it's not manly enough. Lots of people can shoot a compact 380 way better than a 9mm especially if it's not the first shot and the ballistic difference is way less important than shot placement.
People should choose the most powerful caliber that they can shoot without practical speed and accuracy sacrifices. .380 acp and .38 special are the calibers that give you the least recoil while being significantly better than their less powerful cousins. I would feel confident in carrying .38

thanks Paul for the info. I know this was a lot of work to accomplish the data. I personally have a little of the IMI ammo and Hornady ammo, basically because its easiest to find in stock online and in my local gun shop. So, for me, this was very informative and much appreciated.
This was an awesome review for short range performance. It’s my experience that heavy 69 to 75 grain 5.56 bullets are used for hunting and for long range “targets” in far away places. 100 yds isn’t a long range rather 700 or 800 meters. A lot of this ammunition is very capable at these longer ranges and it would be interesting to see a comparison for what’s available today. Steel penetrators are good at what they do, short rang penetration of barriers. But they have limited use as far as hunting is concerned, especially since better bullets are available.
A couple of years ago I found 62gr bullets were considerably more expensive than 55. For any of my 16" guns the 55's were well more than adequate and much more plentiful. I ultimately built a 20" that I wanted to fill a DMR type role and went through the cycle of weights. I ultimately found 77 gr. bullets to be the most accurate, especially with hand loads. Great video Paul!

Whenever I'm scrolling and see a Paul thumbnail I click on it (well, thumb it) and I know I'm gonna be enthralled for its entirety. I love how he just BUT WAIT THERES MORE the ammo from his jacket like he's a saleman helping you figure out what grain is best for any given scenario and the pros and cons he's encountered that may or may not be ideal depending on any number of factors with a hand written chart detailing chronograph results sorted by weight and/or velocity. It's such a concentrated amount of data that makes you be the judge when you put it to the test. He makes learning fun.
My Colt M4 with 16" 1/7twist barrel really likes the IMI 62gr green tips and is very accurate. I believe every rifle has a preference and you have to shoot multiple different rounds to see what your rifle likes.
Each new video I find myself in awe at how precise Paul is with firearms. That is a life goal I think I will have for myself, to shoot as consistently as Paul does.
This is awesome, since this is the ammo I'm seeing around, a lot of IMI brand 77gr, M193, and M855. I did 2 gel tests with the 77gr loads from my 20" which is my go to rifle, and was impressed. Wish I had a camera, I would have shared that. Thanks for what you do Paul! Also, I found IMI's M193 is more accurate than other M193 loads out of my 20", 1 in 8 twist, HBAR rifle, and with their 77gr loads I actually was holding 1 moa groups! I think your groups may have been smaller if the target wasn't moving and if you had a better type of bullseye target, since when shooting groups the target makes a difference when you have a really good aiming point and sight picture, aim small miss small kind of thing. Also I have a 4x Brownells carry handle scope over my iron sights and that helps when seeing the true accuracy of a load, with iron sights you're naturally going to see a bigger group, and what you see is pretty consistent with when I use my irons. Nice video Paul! We appreciate it
@@charlesdalton985 And I understand. I have a .308, but it's bolt action, I use it for hunting. The Mini is home defense and plinking. I took the hunting class, got my permit, but I don't want to go out my first time alone. I would like to learn from an experienced tracker. Thank you Mr. Harrell. This video is particularly interesting to me as I picked the IMI 77gr. JHPBT as my go to ammo for some time now in my 2019 Colt AR-15. After watching your testing video, I'm sticking with it. Much appreciated.
For an April Fool's edition, Paul needs to slip in a fake chronograph loaded with Tannerite. Shoot a couple rounds, rattle off some fake numbers, and then kaboom.
This information is very useful to me since my neighborhood has a lot of roving gangs of cinder blocks and I wasn't sure that 5.56 would be enough to stop them.
A few decades ago I had a Mini-14 Ranch that would only shoot good, tight groups with the green tip. Every variety of commercial ammo, every handload I tried, it was consistently mediocre. But for some damn reason that 62gr steel penetrator ammo just worked like a charm. I was so annoyed I sold the rifle. Another very interesting video from Paul.
I've had great luck with IMI M855 62 grain in my Aero Precision rifle with a 16 inch barrel and 1:7 inch twist. It shoots groups maybe an inch smaller than the Federal M855 at 50 yards.
Awesome! I was worried Mr Harrell was not going to upload as much or anymore since he's being persecuted. I think Mr Harrell is an American treasure and his kind of skillset should be supported,
I loved this video. Thank you a lot. Also loved how you shoot your AR-15 A2 - 20 inch barrel rifle. Very nice grouping and shooting. No one is perfect Paul. Even though you are a champion shooter, you show that you are also human and this is what I mutually respect about you.
IMI All day long! I only say this because I own several IMI firearms the ZION 15 being one and I am a huge fan of their quality. thanks for the awesome video!! very much appreciated
Once the ammo drought is over, I’d love a video comparing common ar15 twist rates. I just want to see how much it would actually affect grouping with various grain weights.
My Wyndam Bushmaster with a 1/9" twist barrel would stabilize 77gr pills, but the groups were larger than my Sig with the 1/7" twist. 75gr seems about the heaviest pill that 1/9" twist likes.
10:18. !!! I thought it took a wing off the fly! Nice shooting and groups. Nice to know Hornady rounds are spot on with your zero from the Federal =] 14:40. That IMI was kicking the hell out of those blocks. Nice round. Another great video and data. Thanks
I would conclude that the IMI is not the best choice for a precision target or competition shooter. However, if it has an advantage it might be for defensive use or possibly hunting. More damage is better in both those applications and higher velocity (if the difference is significant to you) means more gas to cycle your weapon in sub-ideal conditions.
Most of my 5.56 is IMI 55gr & a little IMI 77gr & PMC gtreentips. I still have a few hundred rounds of Winchester .223 & Hornady Frontier 5.56 too. Luckily, as of this video posting, it looks like stocks are increasing a bit and prices dropping a little, my LGS and the SPB in town both had a fair amount on the shelf this week for the first time since last fall.
Go take a look at the AR15 channel and his ballistic testing if the IMI 77 grain SMK BTHP and I bet you will change your mind. It is one of the very top best defensive rounds out there.
I have ammo thankfully. Not a lot but enough to train with and not worry about it. Hell, I recently picked up a few hundred rounds of ammo, mostly .45 but I got some 9mm too. Granted, with the prices as they're going, I'm going to have to start considering selling a kidney
Hey Paul, from your videos I believe you are more of an iron sights man, but would you consider making a video about weapon sights (for rifles specifically)?
The whole reason that the Military started issuing the 77gr Mrk 262 was the troops from Afghanistan and Iraq complaints about crappy stopping power of the Green Tip load in close quarters action . The origin load was the long range target ammo from BlackHills ammunition company using the Sierra 77 OTM bullet . Feedback was much improved stopping results .
@@Hercules1-v9m 855 GreenTips were much worse than the original 193 , didn't start yawing soon enough . The faster twist rates didn't do any favors for the 193 load though . They would have been better off with the old 1: 14 " rate with those .
@Jeffrey Carlson Long range accuracy is a great by-product , but they wouldn't go to all the extra cost for that . If that's the reason , then why didn't DOJ go to it years earlier ? That loading had been on the civilian side for over a decade before it was issued .

We appreciate it
Thanks Paul, as one who owns both of IMI's 62gr & 77gr, you're saving me a bit of money...I thoroughly enjoy your edu.
“Paul Harrell”, most versatile English teacher in the world.
Another quality, informative and entertaining video by Paul and the crew. Thank you all very much for the nonsense free presentation.
This guy rocks in the gun world like Mick Jagger.
Nah, Jagger was all about the swagger. Paul is more like Charlie Watts, steady, strong, reliable, not at all a strutting peacock.
@@mangledjargon5728 99% of the world don't know who Charlie Watts is!!!! lol
I bought myself the 20inch barreled 1in7 twist colt ar15 a4! Pretty happy with it!
I don’t even own an AR platform and watched, because - Paul Harrell. 👍
I'm in the UK weeping cuckold tears at all those fine US weapons.
If you can't afford an AR-style rifle, go out and buy a Ruger Mini-14. Mine runs great.
@@darthkek1953 Come visit!
@@Ogrematic In my experience, a Ruger anything is a good choice! It’s not a matter of cost, an AR just doesn’t fit my uses.
@@charlesdalton985 And I understand. I have a .308, but it's bolt action, I use it for hunting. The Mini is home defense and plinking. I use the .308 for long-range target practice and, hopefully, hunting, if I can find a guide to teach me the fine points. I took the hunting class, got my permit, but I don't want to go out my first time alone. I would like to learn from an experienced tracker. A bolt action is more than accurate enough for me to take a deer at 100 yards. Past that, I would wait for a better shot.
This is more like IMI versus Remington, PMC, and Hornaday but I'll take it.
Thanks for taking the time to video the results regardless.
Ladies & Gentlemen: This what a real man looks like, acts like, and talks like. No false tactic- cool bravado. 👍

Yeah, I like "guntube" channels like Paul or Hickok45 that are more practical than the over-the-top tactical LARPers.

@@cfj003 I'm aware of the veteren status of these men. I'm just talking about how they present their video content. Paul's vids are more down to earth but useful at the same time. Garandthumb on the other hand has his most recent video on a 40mm grenade pistol. An item the exceedingly vast majority of us will never shoot but the IMI ammo on the other hand is sometimes one of the few manufacturers available at a decent price for those trying to stock up.
Thank you Mr. Harrell. This video is particularly interesting to me as I picked the IMI 77gr. JHPBT as my go to ammo for some time now in my 2019 Colt AR-15. After watching your testing video, I'm sticking with it. Much appreciated.
Missed that chronograph again, all shots went cleanly through the hoops
For an April Fool's edition, Paul needs to slip in a fake chronograph loaded with Tannerite. Shoot a couple rounds, rattle off some fake numbers, and then kaboom.
He is way better than Average Joe
Paul, my best wishes regarding your health matters. I have watched and enjoyed so many of your excellent videos. Thank you.
It costs $400,000 to fire this weapon for 12 seconds
HA!!! Heavy.
HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
Thank you Paul, for using your time to make and put these videos online.
This information is very useful to me since my neighborhood has a lot of roving gangs of cinder blocks and I wasn't sure that 5.56 would be enough to stop them.
12:23 Is there enough difference to make a difference? Yes, sometimes.
I appreciate this detail.
Paul, you’re at it again with your badass-ery dude. I wish I could just shake your hand.
Always love to see Paul's ammo comparisons. Thumb up.
Watching Paul shoot ammo during the ammo shortages is like being hungry and watching someone eat a large Steak Dinner.
I think Mr Harrell is an American treasure and his kind of skillset should be supported,
The fly at 10:09 was very lucky not to have been in that spot at 10:25!
Plot Twist : it was Ant-Man on his mission to recruit Paul into Phase IV of the Avengers.
Another good one. Thanks for posting, Paul.
Rest in peace Paul Harrell
I feel like my mind is being read with some of these videos. Thanks Paul!
I like to call out numbers before Paul does to see if I can guess them correctly.
The IMI seemed to have very consistent velocities.
IMI All day long! I only say this because I own several IMI firearms the ZION 15 being one and I am a huge fan of their quality. thanks for the awesome video!! very much appreciated
The lab coat makes the test more scientific.
Thank you so much for testing that second block :)
1/8 twist rate is the sweet spot
@J. P. meh, I will stick with 1/7
10:18. !!! I thought it took a wing off the fly! Nice shooting and groups. Nice to know Hornady rounds are spot on with your zero from the Federal =]
14:40. That IMI was kicking the hell out of those blocks. Nice round.
Another great video and data. Thanks
Nice. Looks like the 77 gr is the way to go. The Hornady 75 gr also did well. We can thank Black Hills for developing the MK262 load for the military.
To the point. well spoken. very well executed. 10/10. great video.
Another short but informative video. Thanks Paul.
IMI beats NO AMMO. What a lot of the USA has right now.
Would love to comment but AFT will follow! I may have bought 20 rounds!
Go take a look at the AR15 channel and his ballistic testing if the IMI 77 grain SMK BTHP and I bet you will change your mind. It is one of the very top best defensive rounds out there.
@@BrewCityRider yeah but thats the SMK, I wasn't sure if the 77 grain in this video is the same bullet.
I have ammo thankfully. Not a lot but enough to train with and not worry about it. Hell, I recently picked up a few hundred rounds of ammo, mostly .45 but I got some 9mm too. Granted, with the prices as they're going, I'm going to have to start considering selling a kidney
Thank you, Paul. Helpful. Appreciate the content.
Paul Harrell: You be the judge
Me: No thanks. I know what you think of the Judge.
😉
😂
And the Smith and Wesson whatever it's called version of the Judge. "Why did we bring it out? Because we could!" :) :/
Someone once asked me if I'd rather be shot with 5.56 or 7.62. My answer was neither. After seeing this video that is still my answer.
Hey Paul, from your videos I believe you are more of an iron sights man, but would you consider making a video about weapon sights (for rifles specifically)?
Thank you SO much for this video. I'm a huge fan of IMI/IWI products, especially the Tavor X95 and their ammo. I wish I could like it twice!
Yeah the military forgot the part where lighter 5.56 sucks in short barrels. Have to compensate with a heavier bullet.
Troops complained about the lack of stopping power from 'Nam through Somalia and beyond.
You're not wrong though.
@@Hercules1-v9m 855 GreenTips were much worse than the original 193 , didn't start yawing soon enough . The faster twist rates didn't do any favors for the 193 load though . They would have been better off with the old 1: 14 " rate with those .
@Jeffrey Carlson Agreed, and that's why I use it. In MY 18" SPR rifle with a match barrel, I get MOA 5 shot groups, and I can take it out to distance.
@Jeffrey Carlson Long range accuracy is a great by-product , but they wouldn't go to all the extra cost for that . If that's the reason , then why didn't DOJ go to it years earlier ? That loading had been on the civilian side for over a decade before it was issued .
Thank you for this presentation...nicely done.
One of these days that fly isn't going to get away and it's gonna be epic,,😁

The 77 grain IMI is great at distance. I am consistently hitting targets at 700 yards (and sometimes a little more) from my Daniel Defense MK12.
