Blackmagic should make their own external SSD and/or SD cards to solve the confusion with storage solutions. RED does this for a reason. These cameras are for indy film makers so it blows my mind why they don’t make a 16GB-64GB non-removable internal storage in these cameras as a backup or even a cache before actually writing to an external solution.
A 1TB NVME drive costs $100 for a normal person to buy. Wholesale pricing will drop that. Put it near the fan, add $500+ to the price of the camera, and allow no company to compared because idk anyone that offers internal storage under the $5K price point
I like the idea of an cache and custom SSDs. Shooting with a RED is quite comfortable. Would also be nice to have something that doesn’t occupy the USB-C and hangs around on the outside of the camera.

Good idea. The RED Komodo shoots with CFAST so that’s easy to work with. Angelbird makes the RED branded storage and accessories for RED and they cost the same as a non-branded one at least :) easier for us normal people :)
The T7 has limitations in terms of higher resolution and extended recording duration. It is prone to unexpected shutdowns, and synchronization issues between audio and video may occur. Consequently, the T7 is best suited for shorter recordings and smaller-scale projects. Furthermore, I encountered an issue when using the T7 with the Blackmagic 6K Pro. While recording in BRAW format for an extended period, the device abruptly stopped recording despite the available storage space.

I have the T7 Shield and never had issues with it. I even took it with me on a trip to record some footage. Fast forward 6 months of no use (life and work stuff) and the damned thing won't work now. Any ideas? I'm using the exact same cable as always.
Some results of my test (BMPCC 6K & Samsung T7 1TB). Recording BRAW 6K 3:1 > 00:35:00 min; BRAW 6K 5:1 > 00:44:11 min; BRAW 6K 12:1 > Until T7 was full. I just stopped my testing with the 12:1 since that is mostly we use, hope someone else can perform and test other configurations. For the 3:1 and 5:1 it just stopped recording and noticed high temp on the T7.

I picked up a T7 today, intending to use it for an old old MacBook I have which I wanted to back up the files on. I had heard the T7 didn’t work with the P4K (etc), so I figured I would give it a try as I still have a P4K camera (which I have not updated since before covid). Worked fine shooting BRAW for me…. So I guess I don’t get what everyone is complaining about? What is it that doesn’t work exactly? Is it that they don’t all work? Do they drop frames or something? Would love to know as I may just toss it into the camera case along with all the T5s I have for that damn camera. And perhaps I’ll start shooting with it again. It’s actually a badass little camera for the money.
At one point it depended on the firmware. I was not able to shoot on firmware X, but Y worked. Some people have reported that it can’t sustain speed and fills up a buffer. I spoke to Samsung and they could not confirm that the buffer case is true. I guess we will just have to do some long 30 min + shots and fill it up to see if it’s possible to record the whole drive full.
@@MartinAaberge Did you ever test the long shot with the t7? Need to buy a new disk and the T7 is so much more affordable than the T5 at the moment, but I regularly film full concerts and need uninterrupted recording for 1H+

I do not have a T7 but I do have a 2TB NVME drive paired with a Sabrent external that gives me over 1k read and write speeds and awesome editing performance on a computer (as well as sustained speeds on Blackmagic Disk Speed Test), as well as a "!" and dropped frames out of my 6K Pro. (I have not tested this since the 7.9 update though.)
Thanks for your input. I just got an ACASIS 10-in-1 hub worth NVMe enclosure. Way faster write speed. I plan to empty my T7 material over to the ACASIS drive and film 4K Q0 till it is either full, overheats, or starts dropping frames. That should stress test it a bit. My tests so far has been really short clips.
@@MartinAaberge just make sure you're moving around with bright images. If the image is static it won't drop frames as easily because the bit rate will stay low. I filmed a 10 minute video of the sky and it was like 8gb lol.

I tried 4 kinds of usbc (the ones that come with the enclosures, kondor blue 20gb/s cable and a random cheap usbc cable) cables and 2 different enclosures: both the sabrent 10gbps and an acasis thunderbolt 4 40gbps enclosure. I was only able to get the drive visible on the camera with the cheapest cable on both enclosures but frames drop after a couple of seconds. The cheap cable also seems to bottleneck at 40 MB/s on pc crystal disk tests. The nvme with enclosure supplied cables get 875MB/s in tests. tldr: what cables worked for you guys, I'm stuck

I guess it should. You should check Niesner’s overview when it comes to data rates etc. in case you plan to shoot with somethibg that requires more than the drive is capable of
When I got the T7, I was able to record everything without a problem. Now it doesn’t connect to my phone… I thought it was the wire but when I changed it out same results. What can I do for that, anyone?
If it doesn’t show up in the camera, you have to use your mac or PC. You need a dock with usb-c if you don’t have that on your computer. What system are you on?
@@MartinAaberge They're a 1tb disk each. i went ahead and bought the 2tb San Disk Extreme SSD and it formatted right away in about 60 seconds. So far so good.

Firmware version 7.9 has brought another problem where you can't stop the recording, I thought this was because I was using the T7 so I returned it and bought a T5, the problem still exists :( so now I have to roll back the camera firmware.

Just used the t7 shield. Absolutely messed my footage up. So upset. So be careful. Do a bunch of tests first. Said footage was recorded sept 22nd 2024 and footage has vertical lines and glitching etc. Awful. Makes me sick
I don't see a reason it shouldn't. However. Someone just told me the newest firmware update would give you some issues with this drive. The T7 Shield seems to be on the approved media list over at BMD: www.blackmagicdesign.com/support/faq/59026

From what I have heard, if you uninstall the 7.9 installer, then install the 6.2 installer, run that, and then run 7.9 again (if you dare) that could work :D There is apparently also a recovery mode. I have never done that, but some users claim BM helped them set that up so apparently doable. Good luck and let us know how it went!
I have this on my to-test list. I just can’t format the T7 right now due to projects working with it. I’ll try to get it done when those projects sre done :)
BM wouldn’t have enabled the S7 if they knew it would fail under the highest settings. They likely had to test the SSD and optimize the update before releasing it because the S7 wasn’t designed for high sustained writing with its smaller buffer. This means the camera might still be using its own buffer (if it has one) in combination to the T7 buffer to make sure every frame is written, even after you stop recording in which there might be a delay before you can playback.

Just paid $300 for a 2TB T7 today. Needed something to offload my M2 that is currently in big trouble
@@MartinAaberge I got a Samsung SSD 980 USB4... you should try that, speed goes up to 2,500 Mbps, same as your internal drive in the M2.

Man, I just did the update for 6k pro and it still wont format the disk. Just runs forever on the screen.

I love the mount for T5/T7 as the nvme m.2 in an adaptor feels very flimsy & loose when mounted on top

I’m curious what you recorded at? I thought the main issue was they disabled it because the bandwidth on the higher bitrate settings was problematic?
