As a drummer who played for many years. Danny is just a master at rudiments and time signature. More importantly, he's a very patient drummer. He knows how to tell a story through his playing (if that makes sense). He plays perfectly right when it is necessary.
He's thinking, "Should I go ahead and open a rip in space time, or wait? Bah, I'll wait till next song."

Jeez, hyperbole much? I’m guessing this comment wasn’t made by an actual drummer. Danny is certainly an incredible drummer in the rock world, and one of my all-time favorite players. I think people get overly excited and use hyperbole like “greatest drummer of all time” and “no one on the planet is as good as him” when what they really mean is “he is my favorite” because the “best ever” cannot really be quantified. Maybe I’m wrong in this case, but people who make statements like that usually aren’t deeply familiar with music outside of a particular genre, era, and culture. I’m also a big Rush fan and have heard other fans of that band making similar proclamations about Neil Peart. There are so many amazing drummers that came before Carey, Peart etc and so many amazing drummers outside of the rock world that make these cringey hyperbolic statements. And a LOT of trained musicians, not just drummers, can answer what he’s thinking. Probably not exactly, but we all have our blueprints, landmarks, cues, and other methods of knowing where you are in a complex piece of music while being able to stay loose and in the moment so that you can play with soul and not just going through the motions. It’s not witchcraft, it’s years of education, training, sacrifice, and complete dedication to a craft.

Danny Carey is a human octopus lol. He has 8 electronic Mandala Pads (the first time you asked what the sound was. ) then he turned and switched to a Korg Wave drum and thats what made the Indian style sound. His playing is amazing and its incredible that he can play four different rhythms and time signatures at the same time. Also for a guy who's 6'5" and nearly 60 he is by far the best drummer alive IMO

    Absolute transcendent master.
I've loved Tool since Sober. I'm a music lover, but I'm not a musician. My young son has started taking drum lessons, and I have watched many reviews of this video. My mind has been blown anew with almost every review. Each notices a different aspect that I never knew, and reveals a new level or skill or technique that Danny is either equal to a legendary master or unsurpassed in his own right. I am nearly brought to tears with each listen/watch.
I find it mind-boggling and profoundly inspiring to witness the heights of achievement possible with practice, training, experience, talent, and a lifetime of dedication to the pursuit of the perfection of one's craft.
This degree of mastery is, as near as I can tell, equivalent to the Mona Lisa, or the Sistine Chapel. Notre Dame, Beethoven's 5th, Hamlet. These are timeless masterpieces. Treasures and relics representing the expression of beauty in a language that transcends words. Danny's work seems to me to be on par with such masters.
No, I'm not on drugs. It's that damn good.
Thank you for your work. Very good video.

It’s almost like he wasn’t given the job of drumming, or writing a song. He was told to write and play a piece of music that would thunder so loud that people in the afterlife would hear it and there would be lighting and rain there. They would look up and yell and smile and cheer.

His set up is based upon principles of Sacred Geometry and the flow of human energy. Everything aligns from the center and moves outward. Symmetry and Balance that's harmonious with the Universal Conciousness. Therefore he's tuned in from his center. Plus, he mention in past interviews, the high hat allows him to strike the snare harder compared having his right arm crossed over.

Most drum teachers would have a coronary seeing someone resting their left arm on their leg, but I say f*** em because there’s always a right way that doesn’t have to conform to standard, it’s what you feel comfortable with, and let’s face it, Danny doesn’t conform to standard practice, he has a hi hat in the middle of his kit, does it matter in his case?! Does it heck. I’ve no time for the people who say you must do it this way, rules are for fools, lol.

  • @jasonhowell1849
    @jasonhowell1849 3 года назад +20

His high hat (and to a degree his bass drum) is keeping time so they are just automatic. The pattern started with Swiss triplets (RRL) which is a rudiment that’s probably been drilled in his brain for 30 years. It morphs into what, I think, is RRLL. What makes it so complicated is the pattern continues to build. So the sticking techniques aren’t complicated, it’s the tom pattern between the hands that makes it so complex. Especially when he decides to throw a subtle fill in to transition between parts of the guitar solo.

Danny is a product of many great drummers before him. You can hear little accents of a multitude of drummers. But what he’s done is taken all that and made something that I don’t think any other drummer can emulate. His precision is on point....his focus and his ability to draw you in and be mesmerized is amazing. And similar to Rush and Neil Peart (RIP), Tool wouldn’t be what they are without Danny. Very few bands have succeeded in putting out a solid full sound with just a guitar, bass and drums. Again...reminds me of Rush. I don’t like saying greatest drummer of all time but I think right here right now, he’s at the top.

Watch The Grudge drum cam video.... I think Danny's mind actually relaxes in the polyrhythms, because he's practiced it so many times it's automatic. I think he just listens for the milestones where the different meters line up or don't and lets each appendage do its thing while keeping the foundation perfectly steady for the other 3.
As an aside, I think people underrate Maynard's skills: He definitely knows when to come in. Their recording process is quite different than other bands, though. According to his biography and interviews with the producers, instrumentals are completely laid down before Maynard ever really hears them, so the coordinated accents between the vocals and the drums are a result of Maynard's artistry, not Danny's. The end result is just excellent ensemble chemistry at work with everyone doing their part and adjusting when necessary. They don't use a click, they don't have pre-recorded tracks, they're just perfectly well rehearsed. If you watch carefully in the middle section with the steady high-hat, Danny loses the groove in his foot for just a second (while somehow keeping it in his hands...)and then tunes into the guitar and fixes it.

Maynard is actually the one who chooses to land his vocal accents onto Danny's drumming because Maynard is the last one to make his contributions to the music. Everything is written musically first and then Maynard layers onto that his lyrics and his vocal melodies. Everything that Maynard writes is written specifically for the music composition that is presented to him by the rest of the band. This is why the lyrics, the vocal melodies, and the music itself all have this rather profoundly intense symbiosis going on between band member's individual parts.

I've been the BIGGEST fan of danny carey for a year now. he is my ultimate inspiration. been drumming for 6 years and to answer your question to where my brain is at when i can play rhythms like he does?
    It isn't.
i have to turn my brain off and just focus. completely. drumming with every single limb operating independently takes extreme focus and discipline to pull off.

There are drummers that replicate Danny's playing, only Danny is Danny. The most amazing thing I heard about Danny is he practices paradiddles with his feet. As a drummer, paradiddles are tough enough with your hands. EVERY one of Danny's limbs are in unisom, but are each paying their own groove! He is a true master of his craft!

Great review. Have seen many but before I really hadn’t paid attention to the sync between Danny’s playing snd Maynard’s vocals so it was enjoyable to follow you and the song through they aspect of this video. A lot of people in here say that’s because the music is recorded first then Maynard adds the vocals. That is true but during a live performance like this who recorded the music and the vocals really doesn’t matter as much as practicing the songs live and then performing then live because unlike in a studio you don’t have dozens of takes to get it right, you get the once chance so for them to stay in sync is phenomenal. Again great review, first time watching your channel and well honestly because it was TOOL 😬

Watching Danny Carey play is a thing of beauty. The majority of the song is in 33/16!! Like...who on Earth does that??!! Well. He does and he does it with such grace as well as dynamics.
You asked what he’s thinking during the break. Good question. As a drummer, to me he looks to be paying attention more to his right hand. At first it looks like he’s ad-libbing the parts until he begins a definitive pattern. Between the tabla drum, Mandala pads and toms you see a distinct pattern of 5. Then it goes to 4, 3 and finally 2 with the snare and roto tom. His hi hat and bass drum pattern are doing more of a straight pattern during that, however at first his bass drum is synced with the bass guitar line.
I do see two minor flaws. Watch the beginning when he starts the hi hat and snare pattern. You’ll see his right hand kinda forget the count and he pauses briefly. The second flaw is in the final heavy portion. On the third fill, he always did 3 snare hits combined with cymbals. However, that last piece he begins to fill around the toms and you see his left hand do a little “WTF mate? We’re supposed to hit the snare” but his right continues the fill. It proves that like all Norse gods, Danny too...can make a mistake.

Not that I'm anywhere near as good as Danny, but at that moment in the middle of the song, I can say with a reasonable amount of certainty that he is absolute, 100%, "in the zone". His muscle memory is dominating his movement, but his mind is floating above it all somewhere, almost disconnected, just feeling the patterns that he is creating and shaping the texture of the dynamic.

18:24 - That's why Maynard is next (and behind) of Danny. You can actually see glimpses of him at 7:11 (left of the "keyboard"), 14:28 (casually walking in the background) and 17:22 (squatting left side of the screen). Adam Jones and Justin Chancellor both make small cameos in this as well. x)

Great reaction to what should be a Hall of Fame drummer a few years from now drumming the heck out of what should have been a Grammy winning, legendary beast of a song!!! You might just be my new favorite reaction channel! 🙂 Have you figured out the time signature to this yet? I'm not a drummer but I'm a novice composer and I still can't figure it out....and I refuse to cheat and look! Haha! I know at least that those middle response head-nodder parts are 4/4! Anyway, great in-depth reaction...Subscribed! 🙂 Keep those Tool reactions coming! I suggest reacting to their song The Grudge yet if you haven't already!!! Cheers and respect from Chicago, Missy!

9:57 yep, the placement of the hat is atypical. Also, there's a guy named Austin who has a series called Study the Greats on YT. He has an EPIC break down of the polyrhythmic section of this song (the long build up in the middle). Even has notations, plays it at half speed, then full speed. It'll shine a whole new light on it.

part of the reason you didn't notice all the accents on things before is this mix was done specifically for Vic Firth and brings the drums and symbals slightly more forward in the mix, and the high hat placement is so he never has to cross his arms over each other, or that is what i remember from an interview

    • @Bobbias
      @Bobbias 3 года назад

That sounds logical to me. In recently listened to the album and the drums are much lower in the mix there. I think I like this mix better honestly. There first time I heard this song, I literally thought "this while song is just one big solo for him".

Ive listened to many drummers and Danny is in another dimension. evry Tool song has crazy drumming. Tool is the most complete band period. Maynards vocal range and lyrics, Justin is fire bassist Adam jones has a very unique signature. I recommend Lateralus, Ticks and leeches, Jambi Parabola.oOh and you Missy are so cute and a great happy personality!

Mr. Danny Carey is a master at his craft. I read that he has been playing drums for over 50 years. He recently turned 63. You know that a proper warm up is a must. I shall submit to YOU & your viewers that this first portion is Danny getting loose and warm. I also enjoy all the litle accent he puts in there. He really busts it out later!!! You'll know when the overhead lights start to flash. I think it is around 14 minutes or so... O.K. Missy hang on!!!! Get ready!!!!! I was wrong it was at 17 something! Thanks.

15:14 although I can't say I play the drums anything like Danny, I believe the big mental work was done when he was practicing it, i'm not sure how is his process, but one could go about it like: figure out the left right pattern you wanna use in the hands and play it slow > add the hi hat with one foot > add bass drum pattern with another foot > practice it and bring it up to tempo. Repeat the process if any of the patterns change. Maybe his feet are slightly on auto pilot and he is a little more conscious about the hands since the pattern /voicing on the hands change a few times and the feet stays more or less the same.

I've played drums off and on for 30 yrs. Certain things you do become "auto pilot", you don't even think about everything, and Danny has taken that to another level. I don't "count" either, just feel it, I have a feeling Danny does too.

His custom Mandala pads trigger electronic sounds. They have multiple zones per pad that allow him to play melodies on them if they are configured this way. The hihat is cable controlled which allows hihat to be placed anywhere he wants it.
