Hes playing the role of being an addict. The distant dead stare. The body shacks. The pains, etc... great band and Maynard always puts on a show
He is impersonating the distressed child of an addict.,
He is the liquor.
Maynard is playing a role...the song is about a former member that refused to do anything unless trashed
He was playing the role, he become the character in the song. And to hit the notes on that position is amazing
His posture is POWERFUL... On every song I love this man I have not seen a performance artist/singer as intriguing as Maynard
If you want to know more about his stage personia..just dive in to the rabbit hole that is Maynard...he is the front man for three bands simultaneously . There is an abounding amount of content for you to explore ...I suggest THINKING OF YOU BY A PERFECT CIRCLE LIVE !😉
He also dabbled in acid and magic mushrooms. Hes admitted to it several times. He was never an addict like Layne Stayley or kurt Cobain but he did dabble.
Amazing is not enough !
Been fan of not just tool, but all the mutated children maynard has spawned from it for decades. I adore them all
It's not drugs. The song is about a friend who was an addict though.
Maynard with a flat Mohawk mullet rocking a pink onesie sobers the heart.
That’s all him. His stage persona just rules. Best ever period all of them and Danny Carey (drums) is just out of this world
That’s a persona bro he flows into the music but with dialogue he’s very chill
@@FallMatic what I mean is it’s not drug induced like she questioned. Yes it’s his natural stage persona entertaining and not drug induced
@@FallMatic easier way to put it is he’s very good at his job
Lol stage presence... in their earlier 90s days touring..he'd wear a woman's whig on stage with a bra on.
@@Sp3077 and that bra was hilarious. First of 6 times seeing them he was painted blue from head to toe wearing only a g-string. Coachella 99
I read an article where he said he was portraying an alcoholic in withdrawals. He definitely nailed it. It's musical art. AMAZING!!
Maynard doesn’t do drugs… Drugs get hooked on him.
I love this comment.
Brother, I was about to post something emotional and u just did it better...👏👏👏
Mike drop, we're all done
Lol.
This may be the best RUclips comment I've ever read.
Seeing Tool live is a feast for the soul. Period
Mynard is just expressive when he sings. he doesnt do drugs. he just understands how they can be destructive
Yes, he does. Just read or listen to his interviews
That was the point of the song, it's about drug addiction or just addictions. This is all a performance.
My 16yr old daughter asked me for tix to see tool 2 years ago. I was never into them, didn’t know any of their songs so I went in blind.
And now I can see.
Needless to say, I went head first down the rabbit hole.
That's rad. I'm sure you're daughter has a good grip on what it means to "be human" if she's into tool at that age. Means you've been a good parent. Kudos.
Clearly fantastic parenting!! Well done!!
welcome to the army

I'm an 18 guy who never goes to concerts because I don't like being in the audience side, as I was typically on the stage during concerts, but the ONE time I would've gone to a concert, a Tool concert as well, my dad asked me and, FROM THE OTHER ROOM, my mom said "NO."
This is also the same woman who implored me to go to the final KISS tour a few years back with her, my dad, and sister, and I decided I'd stay home...
Karma is a Bitch, I suppose.
His vocals are lower in the mix because his voice is an instrument just like the rest of the bands.
Maynard doesn't do drugs, although he tried once according to his book at least. He's just an intense person to begin with.
true, i tink he said on te JRE podcast that he lives after his father`s advice - Learn from your mistakes or be just another loser. something like that.😀
He has more then one time but it is confirmed he has many more sober days
He also thinks lsd and shrooms arnt considered drugs but more as "tools". Js
Once... Right 😆
Reporter: you said in 2012...
Maynard: I think I took to much lsd in high school so I can't remember 10 years ago.
Clearly Maynard is from the future...
"I am freaked out" -- bravo, you're paying attention! :-)
A PERFECT CIRCLE- Orestes live at red rock, he’s gotten better with age
Now imagine the same guy with a perm and spandex 5 years before this.
LMAO-- I forgot about that.
Just google image Maynard on stage, you’ll not be disappointed.
After watching like every reaction to this video, I think I can go ahead and say this could be mentioned when discussing the best live vocal performances in music history.
not drugs, his persona is that of the addict
In tool, he just sings in the back now, to be more a part of the band. But yah, this was a time where he was wearing a persona.
Maynard doesn't do drugs. He is an instrument and as an artist, he gets into character to tell the story and journey through every song. He is extremely intelligent and talented.
And why do you think he doesn’t do drugs? He isn’t a drug addict by any means but he is 100% a drug user. And there is nothing wrong with that. He talks openly about using.
The beautiful lady just had a toolgasm. Love this soooo much. I’m so happy right now. Love a relative ‘novice’ fan’s reaction to TooL. I think you just got hooked and down the rabbit hole. Please do TooL and more TooL!!! The army will follow.
He doesnt do drugs, the song is actually anti-drug and he takes on the persona of someone who is inebriated or on drugs
He uses drugs. He is t a drug addict at all but he is a drug user. Just listen to or read his interviews.
He’s playing the part! “Why can’t we not be sober”
You can forget being front row and seeing him sing like that. He's mostly always in the background, in the dark, but not on drugs. 100% persona.
Nice! Checkout Tool -Pushit Salival version next... It's live, but no video.. But it was professionally recorded
God his voice
Absolutely Tool, Pushit from Salival
That is my favorite song of all-time. Really amazing
Ahhh I just recommended that too. She can also watch the concert clip it's still amazing
46 and 2. One of their best.
TOOL. . The art of being able to envoke emotion to all scences.. go to a live show you will be talking about it for the years to come.
That is the appropriate reaction to Sober. Thank you
It is an act he is performing as a drunk/user note the song name sober. he is growing grapes in Arizona for his wine label now.
As for being "creeped out"...
You stated you're familiar with a lot of their songs.
One of the central thematics of TooL is vulnerability. If you are unsettled, disturbed, moved; perhaps uncomfortably, then you are *hearing* TooL.
Opening yourself to yourself in those "states of inner undress", as it were, is where you can peer into the crevices of your self. The places you neglect. That you intentionally ignore as they might be decidedly unpleasant.
It is there that the mirror looks back into itself. And in the end, the music, the lyrics, is no more specifically important than the precise words of the hypnotherapist. They are nothing more than a TooL to guide you on your own way.

Maynard just doesn't like his vocals to be above the instrumentation. Tool is a band, not Maynard.
Damn near the same feelings I had when I watched the concert years ago!
I'm officially a fan and subscriber of your channel now.
when leaving a tool show you are drained both physically and mentally in a great way!!
I’ve seen them live 15+ times... it’s always this good.
Another great song/video that highlights his vocal range and beauty is Pushit Salival Live.
The best break down of this song in my opinion was done by The Charismatic Voice. Spot on.
I subscribed to witness as you "spiral out" and "keep going".
Being in the center of the mezzanine level is the best way to watch TOOL live
Pick whatever Tool song you want. There are no bad ones.
Not drugs..it's called an awesome theatrical performance. He knows exactly what he is doing and elicits the response intended. Nice reaction...new subscriber. Keep'em coming!
One of the best perfoemances of all times for sure. Great reaction and thank you!!!
Maynard's stage persona is like that because he wants people to see what it's like to be an addict, and no he is not an addict. Legendary band and Maynard's voice is mind boggling and beautiful. Great reaction. 🤘
"Pushit" live (Salival). A Queen at Live aid caliber performance!!!!!!
Tool " The Pot" is a must listen. I promise its brilliant and speaks volumes as to what direction the band was looking to go with their music. Subscribed and liking what I've seen so far. PS: watch the lyric version with no video. The video tends to distract most from the instrumentation. Keep em coming
We found a new one, Tool Army!
For a perfect circle you should watch “Orestes” live ... it’s probably my favorite live performance by Maynard
love what jou do keep up the good work. tool is art
Come on Missy! He hits every note perfectly, his feet s firmly planted. He is not on drugs he is expressing the song. Maynard is in complete control!
Best performance in a onesie ever
Truth.
Keep the Tool reactions coming. Thanks.
That's all him. His stage presence is so superior to others it's just insane.
Don't I know. I saw Tool in concert after over a decade of being a fan.
*Presence
I'm sorry, I'm not trying to be a dick but if it wasn't auto-correct, I just thought I'd let you know for future.
@@tobydude100 good old voice txt..... Thanks
Don't worry about maynard, it was theatrics. 3 banda(tool, a perfect circle, and pusifer) plus he owns/runs his own successful wine company ( Caduceus Cellars). Very smart and talented guy, check his appearance on Joe Rogans podcast.
On stage maynard is an enigma...u should see them live it's a life changing experience...I've seen them 5 times...cheers from Kansas city..
Shes about to slide right out of that chair!!!! Lmao. Awesome
When you said 'don't end' ....I thought the exact same thing. I didn't want it to be over. I have been binging their videos for days.
musical theater...he is the crazy epic talent you mention.......he's in character
"Dont end yet" if I only had a dollar for every time I've heard that.
3rd eye 7.8.1998
"Maynard and the fan, don't pushit"
No Quarter (live) kingilla
He is trying to save his friend's life so he made this. He is trying to feel and show his friend's pain. His friend is hooked on drugs. His friend says he needs them to perform/create. To us it's a character, but that is where he draws his inspiration & his power from.
Invincible is amazing Maynard in his mid 50’s. Beautiful melody and vocals.
There is a cover of 46 and 2 done by the O'Keefe music Foundation. It's an old video but the kids kill it. The vocalist is Kala Rose and she is all grown up these days and singing with her own band that is made up of fellow alumni from the O'Keefe music Foundation. Their name is Saving Escape.
One of the most joyous covers ever. Those kids are so talented. Curtis on drums and the bassist are just WOW!!
That’s his stage persona. It is also why he is always at the back of the stage, sometimes staying out of the light. In the Pneuma drum cam video, that was him walking around behind Danny Carey.
You haven’t lived until you’ve seen Tool live
In order for maynard to achieve the voice we love he has to dig deep into his consciousness and what you see is that raw unfiltered emotions. Not drugs. He has severe stage fright and anxiety as well.
I love the cat moments, especially 😆
No drugs for sure. Pure genius.
Welcome to the edge of the MJK rabbit hole. Enjoy the ride
Pneuma live with drum cam and Danny Carey
I felt like this song in the 90's, and then I learned that my back had been broken for 2 years and I was in constant pain. So, there you go...
His movements always make me think of the claymation character in the official video. Maybe that is what he was going for?
100 people have said it... let me be the next. No drugs, just genius.
Yeah he's just showing how addiction takes you over. Genious
I've seen Tool 8 times.. absolutely amazing every time.
Yes his posture and manorism here are portraying the broken down desperation of an addict
His voice is "buried in the mix" because they use it as additional instrument instead of focusing on the vocals and let everything else in the background.
This song resonates with nearly everyone because its clearly written from the position of watching and dealing with someone he loves with an addiction. The anger and exasperation of watching someone go down the wormhole and your inability to help. You love them and hate them at the same time. Very few people have not had to deal with this in one way or another. Family member, coworker, friend, most of us have seen it play out and know how miserable it can be. The telling line is "I will find a center in you, I will chew it up and leave". That defines an addicts relationship with their friends and family.
I'm pretty new to Tool, but the song is about an addict's struggle with drugs. Some of the lyrics are from the drug's perspective. Some from the addict battling the drug. Persona - but maybe experienced?
As I understand from the Tool Army, Maynard does not relish the spotlight as a front man....he prefers to remain in the shadows. These early performances, they played early slots in the daypart, so Maynard couldn’t hide, and just chose to focus on a single point.
Would love to see you check out some Avatar, or some King’s X!
A little bit of musical theatre there to help drive home the point of SOBER
It's the Maynard persona, in that the vocalist was born James Herbert Keenan.
He's playing a part.
It's sober.
"I wanna know the depths of the weird..." Oh, this will be a journey :)
check out Danny Carey drum cam done by Vic Firth for the song Pneuma, youll see Maynard in the background.
I saw Tool last year just before the virus crisis. Maynard stayed mostly in the shadows at the back of the stage.
I've been watching different reactions to this video today. I saw it for the first time today even though I'm very familiar with the song, have loved it since it came out. The thing is, I relate to the story. So for the last almost 30 years it was a song that did a good job of painting the picture. But this performance, the way he goes from being lethargic, almost lazy and completely lacking energy to screaming rage and fear over what you finally realize you've become and you're standing at the edge of a pit, with no idea of what's going to happen with your life or even if you WILL live, and then he comes down from that, looking exhausted and back into the lethargy because there's no energy to sustain that level of emotion... It's a whole new look at the song I've never seen before, and I'm really glad I came across the video finally. I can't imagine how much this takes out of him on stage. How do you go from this into another song? I have no idea.
He would have been a great character actor. He is convincing portraying an addict. Legend in his own lifetime.
Really cool. My favorite band. I seen the Aeinima tour. He is all over the place on the stage. I seen an interview where he said how he makes songs. He thinks of people/personalities he hates and the emulates them. He was acting like a junky on the edge up there.
Yes do more live videos...anything of Tool or A Perfect Circle....Puscifer too.
Nice call on the Kasmir analogy
The man.period👽🔥
Queensryche, Take Hold of the Flame. Mind blowing
he has taken on the persona of the addicted in the song...no drugs...just artistic expression
If I could pay someone $10k to time travel me back to when I first listened to Tool for the first time I would
Tool is the best. You would have to be in front row to see him now. Best spot to see a TOOL show is in the straight back right behind the floor.
You should check out Pearl Jam - Black from the Unplugged performance.
MJK suffered/suffers from stage fright.
This performance is EPIC. All him, no external influences.
There are only like 3 or 4 bands/artists that I will do whatever I can to see them when they come to town and Tool is one. They really don't perform like this anymore. They usually have video screens, sometimes they have people performing movements on stage (think cirque de soleil but mixed with contortionists,) and Maynard stands waaaaay in the back to the side of the drums as he feels his voice is just one component of Tool so why should he be out front, and it allows him to be in a "zone" as well as to not have huge bright spotlights on him. Great reaction and yep, whenever live shows come back and Tool comes near you GO.SEE.THEM.
Perfect circle does an amazing performance of three libra on the Jay Leno show.... you'd love it. Just search perfect circle jay leno.
Tool song Descending is epic
If you watch any A Perfect Circle Live, IT HAS TO BE LIVE AT RED ROCKS. One of the greatest concerts ever. Any track... The Noose and The Package are probably my favorites.
Thanks for your reaction. As others have mentioned they don't do drugs. They're in their late 50s now. This was filmed in 1993. I saw them live in Feb last year and they were amazing. You don't last that long if you're an addict.
Keith Richards say's hi!
@@jeremyryan770 Haha! Keith isn't human though. Kurt Cobain, Layne Staley, Jimmy Hendrix, Janis Joplin. The list goes on and on.
@@johnwilson1794 Ozzy Osbourne say's nothing understandable.
@@jeremyryan770 When I saw them last year they all sounded on top of their game. Fingers crossed they've been writing after cancelling touring last year. I'm hoping Corona didn't affect Maynard too badly. I'd love to see one more album.
@@johnwilson1794 Me too, don't think it will be too far away.
