  • Today we're back on our 1955 Chevy Nomad engine! In this video, we dive into the meticulous process of reassembling the motor, incorporating a modified radiator for a perfect fit, and installing new radiator hoses, spark plugs, and exhaust gaskets to ensure optimal performance.
However, every restoration project comes with its challenges. The first start up goes horribly wrong! The cranks to life instantly but started smoking out of the tail pipe.

White smoke normally means blown head gasket or Crack in the head. Going thru the same problem with the wife's car now. Check the compression on the cylinders and see if it has low compression and check oil and antifreeze. May find oil in the antifreeze or vice versa.

    Hi Dan
The water pump you installed is correct however, when they manufactured the pump, they didn’t get the hub press down on the water pump shaft there’s a certain distance. The hub needs to be pressed on something like a quarter inches. There’s a measurement online if you look a starting point , that’s how GM originally installed them. I hope this helps if you get to Reed about your water pump.

Re the water pump there is a early corvette low profile pump that is longer than a regular low profile pump. The difference is about the same as yours. I bought an aftermarket pump and ordered the corvette one and that is what I got. I believe it is made by Flow Kool. I should have paid more attention to the dimensions between the two. I sent it back got the right one and made a huge difference to the temps.

I got a real life story. Back in the 70s, my dad had a big black car parked in our barn that my brothers and I used to play in. One day a couple of men showed up and did some work on the car with my dad. They got it running and drove it away. When I was older and started getting interested in cars I asked my dad about that day the men came. He said they put a battery in it and something else minor. I believe a set of points and spark plugs. The car. Turns out it was a 57 Chevrolet. 2 door. Yeah. My dad sold it for fifty dollars. I don't know what condition the body was in. But it was black with red interior. It was probably in fairly decent shape because that was the only car my dad kept in the barn. All the other vehicles were just left outside. Obviously he wanted to keep that one somewhat decent. I can't say for certain but I believe that was the time there was a very long strike going on at General Motors in Oshawa where my dad worked. We had very little money for quite some time. I believe that's why he sold it so cheap.

After I solder lugs like that I will always add a deep crimp as well. I've seen on occasion when the solder has failed and the lug becomes loose. It's just an added bit of security. I also heat shrink the end just to help cut down on corrosion. And you can colour code the positive with red heat shrink when you're using black welding cable. It's just a nice professional touch. I've been doing it that way on customers cars forever, not just my own.
