- Today we're back on our 1955 Chevy Nomad engine! In this video, we dive into the meticulous process of reassembling the motor, incorporating a modified radiator for a perfect fit, and installing new radiator hoses, spark plugs, and exhaust gaskets to ensure optimal performance.
However, every restoration project comes with its challenges. The first start up goes horribly wrong! The cranks to life instantly but started smoking out of the tail pipe.

Dan check for a blown head gasket.
Probably the throw out bearing!!😜😜
White smoke normally means blown head gasket or Crack in the head. Going thru the same problem with the wife's car now. Check the compression on the cylinders and see if it has low compression and check oil and antifreeze. May find oil in the antifreeze or vice versa.
Gas is black smoke, oil is blue, white is trans fluid, and white steam is water.
Brake fluid burns white.
@@gregreelman4526 I never burned brake fluid. I can't see how brake fluid can get in the engine. I see another blue smoke issue. When it puffs indicates valve guides or seals.
@@whatsoutthere6822 I have seen brake master failure ruin the booster seal and fill it with fluid. You stand on the peddle and engine vacuum gives the engine a big swig of brake fluid.
@@gregreelman4526 That would make sense. Thank you.
Dan you turned that motor way up on its butt to put it in there. Oil got all up in the top end where it shouldn't be. Run it itll stop smoking. You did a good job dont doubt your work buddy!
That could be the problem!
Maybe the exhaust is full of water when you washed the engine bay
Shrink tube on your battery cable connections makes for a clean look rather than tape . Because we all know the black tape eventually starts to fall off and is all greasy sticky.
"Bump It Dani, Bump It" is the new "Rock It Barb, Rock It"
Probably got water in the motor from power washing and the exhaust too! Should have at least pulled the dipstick to see if any water was evident. Love the Nomad and a huge plus on a properly operating clutch. Engine bay looks sooo much nicer!
Dan,Been driving my 55 since 1970 off and on has a 1964 327. I also have the same belt angle shortpump with alternator and that swing arm bracket & header mount.Never had a problem being out of alignment drove the car to Oklahoma from NY to Florida and back to NY. I have a 6cylinder rad original one & no electric fan nothing never overheats . I think I changed the belt once since then in over 50years,HAA!...Glenn
Could have a slight intake water leak
If you change the intake gasket, I’ll bet you you’re leaking water from either the front or rear water jacket where the intake seals
Today's gas likes to draw water. Its terrible. Kinda surprised you didn't upgrade the stock engine. Mild cam, lifters, ect. Your heat gun will let you know if there is water in the cyliders, it'll run much cooler.
Tighten your inlet manifold bolts! I have had the same issue on two of my cars recently. Tightened the bolts and the white smoke disappeared.
I bought a 1972 Cutlass Supreme back in 1988, and the old guy i got I from had coat hangers running from the bumper to the frame, so the running lights wouldn't blink off and on every time you hit a bump, I cut all that mess off and put Flex grounds from the bumper to the frame and from the engine to the frame...
Retorque the intake bolts
On the water pump, Ya could have gotten the wrong part in the right box! That's happened a few times with me over the years!!
Mid 70s small block corvettes used there own water pump…Longer than a short pump, shorter than a long pump
Uou got oil and gunk in the exhaust while you removed or replaced the engine
really like this nomad.. , greetings from tijuana mexico.
Need to heat that wire too my man Dan. I prefer to install the wire then crimp with hammer and punch or crimping tool and melt the solder into both. But you do you! ;)
Hope that smoke isn't a sign of head gaskets or similar? A Quick Look at the plugs will say.
Good luck with it!
I bet water in the exhaust system when you washed the engine compartment
Tons of white smoke. Mint.
Chevy makes Two water pumps Short and Long TRI-Five take short pump
Put the HEI in and carry a spare ignition module and you will good.
Back in the day, when mechanics rebuilt alternators and generators, we used to put larger diameter pulleys on them. They ran slower at high RPM and helped with belt whip. No problem at idle unless you had a weak battery.
I remember those days! Today we are overdriving them and worried about keeping all the electric goodies working. But using deeper pulleys or modern alternators on our classic. :)
Most use A sepantine belt no "deep" pulleys but different diameters. And most have tensioners not manual adjustments
Sure like your daily uploads DD
Add "Rare One Off Water Pump" to the for sale listing...
Did the corvette have a slimmer accessory drive? Really got me thinking that 327 is definitely out of a corvette
I've been working on a 63 Corvette engine recently. It appeared that it originally had a thin pulley on the balancer. Of course not in original vehicle and owned by several people but we think it was basically stock and mostly unchanged.
All could be answered about the engine by researching the driver's rear engine block casting numbers. Also the ID pad decoded for Corvette history use.
@@macho4x4warlock98 yep we verified ours that way.
Hi Dan
The water pump you installed is correct however, when they manufactured the pump, they didn’t get the hub press down on the water pump shaft there’s a certain distance. The hub needs to be pressed on something like a quarter inches. There’s a measurement online if you look a starting point , that’s how GM originally installed them. I hope this helps if you get to Reed about your water pump.

Sucking air in check ya gaskets brother Dan...Hi Danielle too..love your work guys greetings from Adelaide sth Australia 🇦🇺 👍🐨🦘🐪🪃🎸🍻🚗
It looks like you,ve got a later 60,s long water pump and the early 60 ,s was a short pump just like the early 327,s were small journals and later 327,s were big journals either one to me was my opinion and it don,t count was the best small blocks ever made those early small journal was a high rpm,s monster just like a 283 chevys hooked up with a muncie 4 speed wow hold on your problem could be all on the bottom pulley being wrong if you have a power steering delete GREAT VIDEO DD
Check for water in the oil or radiator, possible head gasket.
Check fluids, leak-down test if needed. Hopefully just residual water from pressure washing.
Smoke looks like it's from coolant in the combustion chamber. You may have a blown head gasket. Hopefully its just your exhaust system and muffler full of water from powerwashing.
Wrong water pump .. there are 3 designs you have a short truck water pump.. I believe a 2 ton truck .. or a 60 -61 corvette.. I might be wrong
Is the hood going to fit? That radiator cap looks awful tall. I'm not being sinister. Really like your channel best!
Good morning from Cape Cod ⛵ thinking back on past Dan activities, power wash the motor without properly covering it, stood the motor on end to get it into the nomad, Dan, I think just run it and it should clear up. You didn't have a blown head gasket before you pull the engine, it didn't blow sitting on the floor. Maybe the intake gasket, whatever it is it's not serious buddy👍 keep up the good work and I'm looking forward to seeing what the problem turn out to be ✌️🇺🇲
Yep pressure washing gets into everything
Hoping it's just some water in the oil from the cleaning... Oil change should tell us what's up. Good luck!!
Trickling water or trans fluid through the carb at rpm will clean carbon build up out. It will smoke a bit but should clear up.
❤Love the t-shirt guys..love & best wishes from Adelaide Australia 🇦🇺 👍🐨🦘🐪🪃
You can walk the oil pump drive shaft by install the distributor walking the rotor button back 4 times and generally it will drop right on the money .. just a hack..
My father in law passed away late last year and my wife and I inherited his 55 (complete but needs some love) and 57 (older restoration but show worthy) along with enough spare parts (doors hoods fenders glass trim etc) to rebuild 2 more tri fives. I also have a 3 speed column shift of course with electric overdrive in it. Wish we were closer together I'd love to donate that trans. to your channel.
The 57 Belair wagon we are now owners of has one and works better then you would think.
Awesome channel !!! Please don't put Flowmasters on it!!!!
Did you by chance pressure wash the engine compartment without covering the down pipe? I can't help but think that mayhaps you have filled the tail pipe with water whilst cleaning.
I've ran across that water pump problem too. The box had the correct part number but the wrong water pump was in the box.😮😮😮😮😮
That pump was built wrong at the factory somebody didn't push the pulley hub on far enough
Hey Dan, Could the smoke be from cleaner when you cleaned the engine compartment that got sprained into the exhaust pipes? Now that the pipes got hot it will be worst for a little while. Just needs to be ran for a while. Good job putting the throw out bearing in this time. lol - later
Challenge: buy vintage hood that’s not damaged and paint to match and add “fake patina “ to match the original patina. I’m subscribed and fonz videos
Ty
That white steam would make me think "head Gasket" But since the engine is a recent install I am thinking possibly you might have gotten some water in the exhaust system. That's the only way I can see benign white "smoke".
Re the water pump there is a early corvette low profile pump that is longer than a regular low profile pump. The difference is about the same as yours. I bought an aftermarket pump and ordered the corvette one and that is what I got. I believe it is made by Flow Kool. I should have paid more attention to the dimensions between the two. I sent it back got the right one and made a huge difference to the temps.
looks like a pull the engine episode 1999 coming soon!
If your self you can always put the distributor in so it fits into the oil pump drive then put tension on the mechanical advance (full advance) keeping tension on the rotor while pulling the distributor out it will move the oil pump shaft ahead
I think it's the old 327 Corvette water pumps from the 60s were shorter
Need to check your radiator for oil and your oil for water those heads or one could be cracked if so slap on some chevy votec 305 ,s that will wake that 327 up really well
Someone must have changed from short to long on water pump before you got it. That would explain the belt not lining up.
If it’s white and doesn’t smell you got water in the exhaust when you washed it, drive it to get it hot enough to blow it out. If it was antifreeze, smells sweet, oil smells like burnt oil, brake fluid has its own smell.
Water running through the carburetor will break up all the carbon in the motor and the mufflers
Just watched an episode of Perry Mason where a guy walked into a used car lot and bought a primo 55 Chevy for $100. Salesman was asking 225 but the guy had cash.
I got a real life story. Back in the 70s, my dad had a big black car parked in our barn that my brothers and I used to play in. One day a couple of men showed up and did some work on the car with my dad. They got it running and drove it away. When I was older and started getting interested in cars I asked my dad about that day the men came. He said they put a battery in it and something else minor. I believe a set of points and spark plugs. The car. Turns out it was a 57 Chevrolet. 2 door. Yeah. My dad sold it for fifty dollars. I don't know what condition the body was in. But it was black with red interior. It was probably in fairly decent shape because that was the only car my dad kept in the barn. All the other vehicles were just left outside. Obviously he wanted to keep that one somewhat decent. I can't say for certain but I believe that was the time there was a very long strike going on at General Motors in Oshawa where my dad worked. We had very little money for quite some time. I believe that's why he sold it so cheap.
Is it sucking brake fluid in from a leaking master cylinder via the booster?
Just a little tip... 327's seem to be happiest at 12 deg. advance.
STEAM!!! means broken head Gasket its and old build. White steam is blown head gasket. ASK ME HOW I KNOW! Butt ... easy fix really. 19 LB RAD CAP? THAT PROBABLY FOUND THE WEAK SPOT IN THE HEAD GASKET Is it bubbling in the radiator? From blow by from a borken head gasket??? Could be a cracked head if so by some alluminum heads they are bad ass. Because they have big intake valves and heavy duty springs.
Yeah water got in the oil ...water drops out of oil at about 140 degrees merican
Very Nice Work Dan !!! When Your Heart`s On Fire, Smoke Gets In Your Eyes. It`ll go away. Rave-On Danni and Dan !!!
Hi Dan .. reposition the alternator bracket so it lines up .. may need a bushing or washers to line it up right ..
Old timers would put water into the vacuum lines to dissolve the carbon buildup. If u put sea foam in the vacuum line it would smoke white like that until it ran all the carbon out. I think the engine is fine
Awesome job. Running sweet as ever too. Keep up the great work.
Water in exhaust pipe from washing engine bay. Da😂
"Make a list", this is the first time I remember you saying that? ;-)
Looks like a lot of condensation and maybe burning off some carbon from the cylinders the smoke looks a bit grayish to me
More room?? Yea, you forgot the stupid fender well headers. lol
Dan check coolant and the drive it and the check coolant.(maybe water In the gas) or a bad head gasket
Nomad engine sounds great but that smoke looks like head gaskets may want to check the coolant for exhaust gasses ro do a cylinder leak down test 😮
Remove that period correct offenhauser intake put a bunch of Chinese parts on asap
30:04 Seriously go smell the exhaust if it smells sweet you’ve got a buggered head gasket
I'm thinking if it was a head gasket you would be able to smell that much coolant in the smoke just a thought
When you washed the engine compartment how much water went in the down pipes? Looking and sounding good.
And, why not use a crimping tool for those wires?
Dan good connection. Grounds are necessary, totally agree.
All jet fuel engines smoke when they are warming up!
Cable proper --marine shrink wrap not black tape. lol
Let’s hope the smoking goes away with an oil change. The Nomad looks great. Cheers!! 😎
Thanks for sharing this video with us, water in exhaust when you cleaned engine bay
You can press the front flange onto the water pump shaft to get it in the right place. I had to do one on my car years ago.
Who knows when the last time that engine been rebuilt, maybe next winter when your not using it send the engine out and have it gone threw
Probably a little oil backwash into a cylinder or two when you had it standing on end getting it in and out
Maybe the smoke the motor cooking the new paint in.
Did you remember to put the fuse back in for the fan on the nomad
Valve stem seals or someone poured water in your gas tank.
You should get rosin core solder for electrical stuff.😊
Water burning out of the exhaust from when you pressure washed it
I love Mur's glass half full attitude.. 😬
IF you could make a two door out of a four door you should be able to fit that rad in😊
water got in your exhaust system while the engine was out
I can relate to your car Dan. I'm old and I get cranky easily and I need constant upkeep!😂
Can you shim the trans mount to clear the hei cap
You got water in the exhaust pipes when you pressure washed
on soldering you cables to the copper lugs, suggest you tin the wire before seating it into the hot hole of melted solder. likely just sticking copper in wo tinning will work, but think you can be further assured of a great connection tinning the wire too
After I solder lugs like that I will always add a deep crimp as well. I've seen on occasion when the solder has failed and the lug becomes loose. It's just an added bit of security. I also heat shrink the end just to help cut down on corrosion. And you can colour code the positive with red heat shrink when you're using black welding cable. It's just a nice professional touch. I've been doing it that way on customers cars forever, not just my own.
It does get super cold there in ole Canada
paint the radiator black!!!
