Count yourself lucky if you are able to find what it is in this world that you love for most of us will go through life without ever truly knowing what it is we truly love to do
A couple of years after the description of the first ascent of Charlotte's Dome was published in Ascent (Beckey, Rowell & Jones), I set out with a couple of friends to climb it. Hiking up the Bubb's Creek trail, I heard the clank of hardware coming down the trail toward me. He was wearing a hardware sling over his shoulder and hanging across his chest were a 1 1/2" angle, a 1" angle, a 3/4" angle, a baby angle and a couple of horizontals. From the photo published in Ascent, I recognized Fred Beckey and so I stopped him and asked for more information on the route. He held up his hands and said that, as he remembered it, the face was slightly bowl shaped and the route went up the right side of the back of the bowl. When we got to the dome that afternoon, it was as he had described it and we could see the line he meant. Nuts were just becoming popular in Yosemite and I was determined to do the route with nuts alone. but my partner put in one pin on every pitch just for the sake of tradition.
In my eyes he’s radiating that admirable sophistication and dignity in his doing that you can’t buy, no one could teach you that. You’ve got it, or you don’t . Dedication to the bones.
Growing up, Fred was a friend of the family, always stopping by to crash on his way through to the next climb. One story my Dad had of Fred goes as follows: Fred was in a car with a guy (forget who) headed off to climb yet another mountain. The guy says to Fred "You know Fred, you're kind of an asshole sometimes." Fred didn't respond so the guy kept the silence. Kept that silence for 4 hours when Fred suddenly piped up "So you think I'm an asshole huh?!"
Back in the 1990s in alaska fred did a slide show on climbing. It was been there done that. I could not believe where he had climbed. Every where including Everest. The guys a legend !!
I love this documentary. How fortunate he was to be able to live and die doing what he loved. I dont think most folks are so fortunate as to have the opportunity. I haven't been able to get out and go climbed in a long while, i hope that i can start again soon.
My favorite local Beckey story is when he came to Tucson in 1966 and put up one of the first (if not *the* first) technical rock climbs in Cochise Stronghold. His partner (a local) told him that all the other stellar looking lines around them had already been done (when effectively none had), so Beckey never dedicated any time to exploring the Stronghold. He could have had his pick of the litter!
he is but he never got to that level of Messner of uli steck, i always feel sad when i look at some top 10 mountaineers and no one writes Fred Beckey. well i guess dirtbags, BoonDockers and vagrants never really want recognition they just want to do their thing.
I want this to be released already! Been so hyped for over a year for this. Its been a looooong time since i saw thw first trailers. Does this mean its coming out soon, since its being shown again?
He never climbed any of the Himalayan or South American Andes mountains. So yes you do. He was too poor to travel to do them. Never really left North America Never climbed above 6000m Not number 1 at all. Just an old poor guy who climbed a lot of smaller mountains

Met him on Whistler Mountain once in his later days. I was in awe. A total legend. A true mountain man

What a legend. Incredible documentary. The footage of his early climbing days was awesome to see. Well done Patagonia.
He's also the only alpinist with multiple books on my bookshelf. His legend is intact.
94 years old. A wonderfull life to live. The man. r.i.p man of the. Mountains ..
This looks so good Patagonia, hope you guys do a great job on this film.
Rest In Peace Fred Becky.

I still have several voice mails from Fred. Really miss him. RIP Fred

Stayed at my house when he came through Albuquerque one year and gave a quick talk to a group of climbers.
This film is superb - far surpassed expectations. Highly recommendable.

love that place! do you know what route this would've been?
@@Kullcans Rupley/Beckey on Vortex Dome (listed on MP as "Beckey Route" on Vortex Tower, see also Tanya Bok's East Side guide).
He was into climbing for the love climbing, and the freedom nature gave him. Its wasn't about his ego like most other climbers.😊
How can you say Becky never got recognition? He didn't start companies and generate wealth but he is as legendary as they come.

"Becky Guide" books got me to the top of many mountains.
Yea! Send it!
Fantastic trailer about Fred Beckey!
Anyone else shed some manly tears at the end of this documentary?
Was awfully sad to see him so fraul but still clinging so firmly to his love for climbing, even though his body had become so weak.
I shed some sissy bottom femboy tears out of my jizzsoaked eyes at this documentary

Thank goodness.
Great mini movie. What a climber. :))
If you want to climb in Washington State the first thing you do is buy Fred’s guide books.
This doc was GREAT, what a legend!
Total legend
Beautiful
Today I get to climb a Beckey Route. Every day that I get to climb a Beckey Route is a good day. Thank you Fred!
Cool. You have my respect. 🤙
The one time I was with Fred he made fun of people going on cruise ships. It must be a thing with him.
So excited to finally see this.
would be nice if I could purchase this in Australia. Ah well, shiver me timbers...
"He is still defiantly climbing today at age 94." May want to change this description. He died on October 30, 2017.
That doesn't mean he ain't still climbing! somewhere...
@@tuffbunker1413 Are you dumb, they should at least remove "at age of 94"

Seems the line between climber and homeless loon is a thin one
Lol, I hope you’re kidding with this comment.
Can't be homeless if the mountain is your home :D

@@jamesblatchford3738 that’s funny because it wouldn’t shock me to hear that this cat bit someone on the ankle haha
