- Douglas Tompkins was a world-renowned adventurer, entrepreneur, and conservationist. Co-founder of The North Face and Esprit, Doug spent the first half of his life building successful, global brands, while simultaneously adventuring around the world, completing first descents of the world’s toughest rivers. In 1968 Doug embarked on a trip to Chile, driving with friends from California to the tip of Patagonia. Documented in the film Mountain of Storms, the trip solidified Doug’s place as rock climbing legend. In the early 1990s, Doug sold his part of Esprit and moved down to Chile to do conservation work full time with his wife, Kristine McDivitt Tompkins, the former CEO of Patagonia, Inc. Together, over the last 25 years, Doug and Kris have protected 2.2 million acres, more land than any other individuals. The foundations under the Tompkins Conservation umbrella, along with their partners, have created five national parks in Chile and Argentina and are in the process of creating five more. A Wild Legacy tells the story of Doug’s incredible life, his lasting impact on the wild landscapes of Patagonia, and Kris and the Tompkins Conservation team’s efforts to continue his audacious mission.
Doug was tragically killed in a kayaking accident on Lago General Carrera, north of Patagonia Park, on December 8th, 2015. Douglas Tompkins: A Wild Legacy was presented to audiences at the Telluride Mountain Film Festival on May 24th, 2016 during the festival’s tribute to Doug.

What a truly beautiful mission in Dougs life. Some of those areas of Chilean Patagonia are the most spectacular places I've ever been; truly wild. Brings a smile to my face to see the work continuing to be realised after his passing. There is however still much to be done. The world needs more business people like Doug.

Doug was not only great guy but inspired and still inspires us so much. He shows that we all can make a difference.
What a beautiful man, what a wonderful relation, connection & understanding of our lives to this our 'only' planet, simply wonderful and a true lesson for each individual, thank you so inspiring,
Having spent three months traveling through the Patagonian wilderness, I was overcome, overcome with great fear for these wild places being lost. I was fortunate enough to hike a ton of the Patagonia national park and let me tell you, Douglas and Kris have done something that is truly incredible. I am forever grateful for his legacy.
What an outstanding legacy and contribution Doug and Chris and their national counterparts have given us! I feel very grateful that people with this kind of vision are still among us.
What a legend. He did it all. He had it all. But most of all he treasured the bounty of nature. And he spent it all on his believe.
I had heard of Doug Tompkins and his amazing work before going to Patagonia in 2016 however I didn't know he died. It was in Patagonia I got to hear this awful news. Patagonia amazed me in so many levels. True beauty of nature. It's people like Doug that preserve the good on mother Earth.
Doug did great things. Don't feel small next to that. Do the things you do. Try to do them well. Continue to do the things you do well. Repeat.

It is with people like Douglas Tompkins that makes me ask the question: will the billions of Chinese and Indians ever be able to produce such an individual in this millenia? If not, then what good is our progress?
You a filled with the idea of only the white man can care about the environment! There were many efforts in chile and argentina to preserve la patagonia , the only thing Doug did was buy a big chunk of land and say hey now is a national park and you cannot do nothing about . Democracy out the window for all natives of the land!
