It truly would have sucked if Bea hadn't won....but she did, which finished off the Grand Slam for the four of those great ladies! :)

      She really should have won for the first season. I think her scene in the premier season where she confronts Stan for dumping her after her daughter's wedding was the best acting scene that entire first season. I don't even know why Betty White was nominated all seven seasons. She was good, but I think Rue (Blanche) was probably the greatest actress of that whole show.

      Matt D. Bea Arthur had good comedic timing but between the "angry" acting and the shouting-- NAH. Her acting is one-dimensional and tiresome.

      > Betty White, a sharp witty funny smart person in real life plays a slow perennially innocent woman-- THAT is acting!
      If that is the criteria then Bea deserved her Emmy as much as anyone because from interviews with practically everyone who knows Bea Arthur personally, not those who know her through Maude or Golden Girls, has said that Bea in real life is shy, reserved and quiet, the exact opposite of her public persona. Now THAT, should I say, is acting too !!

    I personally think that Bea should have won the Emmy in the first season. Her performance in the episode "Guess who's coming to the Wedding" was truly a tour-de-force. Bea definitely has and showed in full force her dramatic chops in this episode. The comedic moments that she displayed were stellar as well. That performance was amazing and truly should have been recognized. Bea looks radiant in this clip as she humbly acknowledges they were an ensemble. Well deserved.

    *UPDATE 2020 - Read Below*
    "The Golden Girls" became the second show in television history (after "All In The Family") where all of it's cast members won Emmys.
    It would take 15 more years before a third (live action) series would joined this exclusive club and that was "Will & Grace" in 2003.
    The other show were all it's cast won Emmys is the animated series "The Simpsons" bringing the grand total to four.
    Special mention needs to be made to the cast of "Schitts Creek" as this show swept the four main acting categories for a comedy series which no other show has EVER done. Congrats to Eugene & Dan Levy, Catherine O'Hara & Annie Murphy.
    And whilst there are other actors and actresses who are part of the cast, the four core characters on this show are the Rose family without whom there wouldn't be a series. So consider them the "unofficial fifth show" to join this exclusive group.

      There's a Rue McClanahan interview on RUclips where she explains why Bea didn't want to do the show. Originally, the producers wanted Rue to play Rose and Betty to play Blanche. Bea felt it would be like Maude and Vivian meet Sue Ann Nivens. When Bea learned who really was going to play Rose and Blanche, she changed her mind.

      Agreed. Absolutely gorgeous. I guess the beauty standards were stricter then - probably quite a bit, but as a ”traditionally feminine” short woman I still cannot understand that Dorothys/Beas looks were ”laughing stock” - she was gorgeous. I’d even say hot in her own way.

    • @PerryCJamesUK
      @PerryCJamesUK 2 года назад +2

      I get that it may appear that way today, but in the days of the great comedies, a joke was usually made regardless of how the person looked. It was part of the classic comedian's makeup to give and receive jibes and to be aware enough to release that it didn't matter what was said as your worth wasn't determined by other's jokes or opinions. Bea was literally stunning and she knew it. She could dish out as much as she could take. Still miss her and her unique performances.

      @@PerryCJamesUK I'm not trying to express disagreement with your point, but I think I read that Bea Arthur was bothered by the jokes about Dorothy's supposed lack of attractiveness, so they toned the jokes down in the last few seasons.

    • @PerryCJamesUK
      @PerryCJamesUK 2 года назад +2

      @@georgeharrisonlover4300 If she asked them to tone it down, I'm glad they did. I can't see why though after all, Dorothy never really let up on Stan's appearance, Rose's intelligence or Blanche's fondness for the opposite sex. It would seem a little strange just to worry about thing and not the others. Bea was a pro and a laugh is a laugh.
