      Yeah, I’m hearing a lot of late 90’s ‘alternative’ in this. I remember this album being huge, but I never owned it, though I heard all the singles many times over (I still knew all these words even though I haven’t heard this in over 20 years). I never gave them much credit as an influence to other bands, but hearing it now has changed my mind on that.

      Once upon a time I loved this album, buuuuut I dated a crazy chick that was obsessed with the lead singer....more than obsessed.....she told me that the two of them are married in the fifth dimension (trying to contain the laughter so i can finish the comment) ......so ever since I ran screaming from the relationship hearing any song off the album makes me either laugh uncontrollably or suffer a PTSD flashback, depending on the level of my intoxication

      However, I find incredibly interesting that when I think of "What does 90's rock sound like?", my first thought is Live. Through and through, 90's rock all feels like varying shades of Live and I find it incredibly amusing.

  • @Gekokujo76
    @Gekokujo76 2 года назад +14

    I always liked Live a bit more than my peers, but I still stand by their albums Mental Jewelry, Throwing Copper, and Secret Samadhi. All three are listenable from beginning to end and are chock full of good to great songs. There is a 90s sheen to it all that can ether detract (it doesnt hold up) or add to it (so much nostalgia!). Throwing Copper is the album with the big hits. Mental Jewelry came earlier and had a lot of slow burners with EXCELLENT lyrics about The Soul/The World/Everything, maaaan. Secret Samadhi still had those great lyrics, but amped up the guitars/musicianship quite a bit. DEFINITELY creeps a little further toward the Tool sound with a song lke Lakini's Juice. That might be one of the few good reaction songs I can think of, but the rest are worth burning down some trees, lighting a candle, and checking out on your own time. Pearl Jam is great...Tool is great. Anything that would be conceivably between them, is probably at least worth listening to once! Sure beats Mumble Rap.

    I scrolled through the comments and haven't seen anyone say that this song is about worshipping Christ. At least that's how I always took it. Lots of this band's music can be interpreted to have strong Christian messages, but they aren't really considered "religious" music. Lightning Crashes is prolly my favorite song by them, and everyone has already pointed out that the entire 'Throwing Copper' album would live in the CD player for days at a time.

      It's not really that, or not exclusively Christian at all.
      "It's hard to write about spirituality without it being corny," Kowalczyk told Louder Sound in 2021. "But that was a period in my life when I was questioning all the big issues. The lyric was like a montage of all these meaningful little phrases. I was creating a sense of intimacy, in this mystical environment, like a church, a temple, or even a secret garden. Everything built up to this sort of fever in the chorus, which was about the idea that there's a singularity to love. It became known as this obsessive love song, but I was actually between relationships."
      Although there's this, which says if that's what you think it is, then there you go.
      It's no use arguing over the meaning of this tune because Kowalczyk thinks all of the various interpretations are valid. "It's impossible to misinterpret that song," he told Louder Sound. "People make it their own. I grew up as a fan of U2, REM, Peter Gabriel, and artists where I could sink my teeth into the lyric. When I hear 'Where The Streets Have No Name,' I don't really know what the song means, but I don't care. It takes me somewhere and just makes spiritual sense to me. And that's what I think 'I Alone' does."

      Considering that the band known as "Live" were originally formed in 1984 (although went through different names before changing to LIVE in June 1991), they definitely cannot be considered "post-grunge" (since the label "grunge" didn't exist before the explosion caused by Nirvana's release of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" along with the album "Nevermind" in September 1991), since they existed (and had released an album) prior to the existence of "grunge".

      @@jaynagerber7474 Valid point. But you could definitely say that they adopted the sound as it emerged and they grew. Not entirely, but some of its attributes. And certainly not all, or even most of their songs have that influence. Admittedly, I only started listening to them in the late 90s.

    I Alone is a great song and still holds up, to this day, as very unique. The bass line is sick and carries the song. The drums and guitar are minimal yet powerful. The lyrics and vocals hit the mark. This is my favorite song from Live, hands down.

    i remember when this album first came out - so many good songs, and a new sound - a little different but yet familiar too.
    I was about 21 when this album dropped, it was the first "new band" of my 20s that I really became a fan of. Sadly they had little staying power as their next album never got close to the greatness of Throwing Copper.
    Still, there was a lot of great songs from that time. I think I, Alone is my favorite, but Selling The Drama and Lightning Crashes are also equally fantastic.

    Live is probably the best band to come of age in the '90's. The band, to the degree that they rose out of the average, is really the lead singer, Ed Kowalczyk, who seems to be the one with the muse sitting on his shoulder, coming up with great songs filled with poetic lyrics presenting a very spiritual view of life and able to do so in 2:30, which allowed for a lot of radio play for their music. Unfortunately, this band had one of the most hateful break-ups imaginable with lots of lawsuits and countersuits flying around, with the discord beginning in about 2006 when Kowalczyk went "on hiatus" to put out an album on his own. They had all known each other since junior high, and when arguments arose about how to divvy up the money generated by their success, the feelings of betrayal were palpable. I was busy with life back then, and never saw Live in concert. Wish I had. Apparently Kowalczyk was amazing live. Live is certainly not a "one-hit wonder" sort of band. Far from it. But the overall lack of longevity makes it a lot easier for music fans in 2022 to never have heard of them. "Lightning Crashes" is, IMHO, their iconic song, Kowalczyk's passionate musings on the cycle of life and reincarnation.
