@@alukuhito I apologise for finding your comment a year later and commenting on agreeing with you. Mary Poole is her name and they were married in 1988. Culture Club, The Cure, New Order, Depeche Mode, Siouxsie, and Pet Shop Boys (amongst a plethora of other 2nd British new wave/Goth bands) filled up my teenage angsty years.
I'm so glad that you're exploring the "alternative" side of the 80s. There's so much to discover and enjoy. If you want to react to more from The Cure, I'd recommend their more commercial songs like "The love cats", "Close to me" & "Inbetween days".
Per frontman Robert Smith's analysis of the opening verse ("Show me, show me, show me how you do that trick"), the line is both a reference to his love of performing magic tricks in his youth and "about a seduction trick, from much later in my life," Yet, overall, the song has a very specific meaning about a very specific person. According to Songfacts, in an interview with Blender in 2003 Smith said that the song is about his wife Mary Poole and their star-crossed love as flatmates in London during the '80s. "The song is about hyperventilating - kissing and fainting to the floor," Smith told Blender. "Mary dances with me in the video because she was the girl, so it had to be her. The idea is that one night like that is worth 1,000 hours of drudgery." For the ballad about Smith's muse, the band was given a lot of input from Mary herself (as well as the girlfriends of other band members) before the final version was cut. In fact, many of the band's flames hung out during recording sessions and critiqued the music: "The girls would sit on the sofa in the back of the control room and give the songs marks out often," Smith told Rolling Stone The Cure is my absolute favorite band (I was a 90's Goth, and still hold it in my heart and style of dress now).
Robert Smith, the vocalist, sounds like this pretty much all the time. He is musical genius and I have been listening to the Cure since the early 80s as a kid... You should really do more of their tracks...I think you'll get them more and more...Check these out: Close to Me Pictures of You Boys Don't Cry In Between Days A Forest The Walk
One of my all time fav bands. I graduated HS in "92. Bought Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me on cassette when it came out and wore it out in my "Walk Man". So many great songs. Enjoy this fun rabbit hole!
Kiss me kiss me kiss me was my first Cure album. I own every one now. I find that only certain types of people “get” their music and they, for me at least, are too few and far between here in Kansas. I’m going with Bloodfowers as my favorite with Disintegration as a close second. I can’t wait for the new album to come out!
Not quite "dozens" of hits. Frankly, not many "hits" at all, at least in the US. It's why they were known as an alternative band. Only 1 top ten hit on Billboard charts and only about 5 or 6 in the top 50. But they have sold around 30 million albums.
This is from last years 1st new wave stream (Around Jan/Feb 2022) . Yall were going to start off with donor's song (a Blancmange song if I recall), but chat wanted to go with this one instead.
One of the top modern rock bands of the 80', 90's and beyond. Yes, you will find some of their lyrics a little on the strange side. Other bands to check out are Siouxsie and the Banshees, Psychedelic Furs, Cocteau Twins and Slowdive.
This was a top 40 pop song that had no chorus and a nearly minute long intro. Pretty nifty achievement if you ask me. This song has a bit of a mandela effect with me, because it feels like really should have been used as an iconic song from an iconic 80s film, and yet it wasn't. But I'm pretty sure you could throw this on to the end of any teen, coming of age, or romance movie from the 80s and it would fit perfectly and make a great ending song.
The Cure is the only band that I would actually the cd (album or cassette tape) insert and carry around just to read the lyrics…they read like poetry. Plainsong, Fascination Street, In Between Days, Prayers for Rain, Pictures of You, Open, Letter to Elise, To Wish Impossible Things, Apart, etc…. all great songs. These guys almost made heartbreak worth having…
i was engaged to be married at 19 to the girl who introduced me to the cure, in 1987, the year this came out. first time i was with anyone was to kiss me kiss me kiss me. it will never ever fall off my list of all-time favorites.
In the 80s there was Rock, Metal, Pop, and of course, welcome to New Wave and the Cure. For other New Wave, check out: The Smiths, Brian Ferry, Flock of Seaguls, Oingo Boingo... whole different vibe.
Love Lex's Robert Smith impression🤣! Was never a huge fan of the band's entire catalogue, but bought this LP in the late 80's, as the whole thing was 🔥 (like this one). Pretty sure you guys will find that New Wave is a very broad, diverse genre. Everything from, post punk, techno, guitar based, alternative dance, neo-psychedelia, etc. I noticed some downbeat tracks were winning the polls during the stream, but there are plenty of super high energy bands/tracks to choose from. Hope you guys continue to delve into it!
It is about distance neither of them wants. His dream is disrupted by his trip away from her... now (probably) flying in a jet over the ocean, the realty of work and distance drowning the dream, but she's deep inside of him, anyway, so the dream of all dreams, their love, lives on.
There is a hilarious video comedy bit with Bruce Leddy playing Robert Smith and 'fixing' up his flat from some old school MTV. "Robert Smith of the Cure on "This Old House""
One of the Best Live shows Ive ever seen. Lucky to have seen them about 10 times over the years. Music is so SOOTHING. Great Band and Robert is amazing singer.
Basically inspiration for the song came during a vacation near some cliffs and as he looked over he felt dizzy and realized how easy it would be to fall. Also watch the video it’s his wife playing the female part.
The Cure were known for dark, moody, goth songs early in their career and then Robert Smith decided to do a 180 and start writing more positive, upbeat songs. Of course they were still in their own, unique goth style.
Technically they were at least as upbeat on their debut album (released in 1979, with almost nothing remotely close to dark, moody, nor gothic) as most of the stuff in the 80s. It was on their second through fourth albums (respectively "Seventeen Seconds", "Faith", and "Pornography") that they became known for the dark, gothic, and moody music (although on everything but "Pornography" - which was their darkest album, by far), you could still find some positive and upbeat vibes mixed in with their music. As far as styles, both "Disintegration" in 1989 (their 9th original studio album) and "Bloodflowers" in 2000 (12th original studio album) were throwbacks to the so called gothic period (so called because Robert Smith has categorically denied on multiple occasions that they were ever a gothic band). Robert has specifically said that "Bloodflowers completed a triumvirate along with "Pornography" and "Disintegration" (he actually used a different word than triumvirate, but I can't recall what it was at the moment, and that word basically expresses his meaning). Even on all of their other albums, there has been a mixture of styles and themes, and both upbeat and moody can be found (to some degree or another), with "Head on the Door" (7th original studio album) probably having the greatest mix of positive, upbeat and dark/moody themed music. Robert is one who has never been held down by conventions and popular sentiments, so he creates what he wants when he wants (even when it goes against the bands so called image or style).
They never did a 180 degrees turn, thats a myth .. they had and still have both styles. if you ever been to one of their concerts you should known that. They still perform songs from both "genres". They started more upbeat, continued more dark and gloomy (but still had upbeat songs), became more upbeat again (yes its true that they wanted at one point to show the world that they are not as dark as people thought) and then continued somewhere in the middle.. it was never a 180 degrees turn, they were in both sides all the time.
@@Craven01 Never said they didn't, But I do remember an interview where he said he made a conscious decision to not do so many dark songs, or works to that effect. I don't remember exactly since it was a while ago, but he felt they were being pigeon holed as a dark goth band.
@Marcus Agreed, he balked at that stereotype. And some of the more upbeat songs were a result of that. I wish I remember the interview where he talked about it but I don't.
The Cure is my all time favorite band!! This band transports me to a different place. I decide which mood I am in and then pick the album that fits and listen from start to finish. Disintegration album is epic.
When Nine Inch Nails were first offered a spot in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Trent Reznor told them, 'no thanks, you guys don't even have The Cure'. Trent got to give their induction speech.
The Hall of Fame is such a non-rock 'n roll concept though. I wonder why anyone cares. Rock is supposed to be fresh and real, not old, filed away with a label as "official" rock.

Robert met Mary in high school. This particular song was written about a day on the beach on a vacation with his wife when dating. Their favourite spot they would go to and the love he has for her. This was one of my Wedding Songs. Amazing Band ! He was and is still so much in love with his wife and they have been married for about 40 years. By far the best band of the 80s. And best performance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame ever (many decades later). OMG, all good lyrics are poetic (metaphorical, symbolic, allegorical, etc.).
I've always loved it because it's whimsical. I also think it's a sad song of finding love and losing it and having a hard time with no longer having it. Btw that's Robert Smiths singing voice. I love so many of their songs. A Forest, Pictures Of You, Why Can't I Be You, A Letter To Elise, Never Enough, Lullaby, Boys Don't Cry, Catch, Burn, Close to Me, Lovesong, Fascination Street, Friday I'm In Love, Hot Hot Hot, Let's Go To Bed & The Walk.
I remember picking up goth girls in clubs in the 80s when I was a teenager, they all loved the cure so hey, went home to the guitar and learnt the songs. If it wasn't for girls I probably would have spent the 80s and 90s playing nothing but metal, 😊
@@zoeherriot it depends, no girl gets turned on with thrash metal shredding, the lady's like more meaningful songs, something with soul and melody, and since so much music is so emotionally expressive being a competent musician is definitely an automatic advantage when it comes to attracting girls,
@@Kipperbob Well, I played mostly selections from the catalogs of The Cure, U2, Smiths, Doors, Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, The Church, etc - but I was also happy to learn a new song if I thought a girl liked it. Again - worked a treat. ;)

Had a friend who absolutely loved The Cure and bands like them back in the 80’s and 90’s. As a metal head, I always referred to them all as ‘four pasty white guys from England’. But as I get older, definitely learning to appreciate their music and their message more.
Loving the way Lex is bopping away and grinning from the very start of the song... it's so infectious and exactly the reaction of all the Cure fans throughout the years
Cute little pop number by everyones favorite goth band the CURE. He know looks like everyones Aunt Edna, however, live, his voice is excellent and good as it was 40 years ago - a real treat.
Absolutely LOVE this song. Great to listen with headphones with your eyes closed... of course, most of The Cure songs are great that way ;) I love listening and focusing on an instrument, then listening again and focusing on a different instrument. "Pictures of You" is another great one.
I was a headbanger, didn’t care for new wave, but anyone who l loves music knows that Robert Smith is a genius. Roberts singing, speeds up and slows down with his odd but very enjoyable voice, landing the lyrics on time. Roberts voice caught my attention back in the day, I just didn’t admit I like The Cure. Robert Smith is the guitarist and writes most of the songs. He was good enough that he was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame. The Cure has been around a long time, Robert didn’t always look like a Edward scissor hand with smeared red lipstick 💄 he went Gothic later. ‘Watch This is the place’ with Sean Penn playing a retired Robert Smith Type character.
I’ve been listening to The Cure for more than 30 years and have never heard anybody say Robert Smith sounds like he just woke up. You’re right, by the way..
"Friday I'm in Love" is a must, it always reminds me to my childhood, I remember watching the video sitting on the coutch with ny father, and my uncle, great times 💯👌🏻
He drowned his heart with his love for his wife. It’s not a breakup song, just praising his love for his wife.
At that point they weren't married, but yeah...
Perfect song.
All the nuances and delicate ballet of the love dance, this song. Love the Cure and Robert Smith lyrics (and sound)

This is one of the best songs of the 1980s. Top 10 of all time.
Most of The Cure's music is dreamy, I love it!
John Lennon said he started playing music to get girls.
@@sonnybarry it really does work. ;)
Again - worked a treat. ;)
My favorite song from The Cure is "A Letter to Elise". I would love to see your reaction to it.
Great song. Makes my Top 100 All Time and this coming from an 80s Rocker fan.
If you ever saw Robert Smith's hair it always looks like he just woke up....love yall..
Fun to see people new to the music I enjoyed all my life
1) I LOVE The Cure. Well done.
2)Robert Smith played guitar for Siouxsie and the Banshees for a bit and is well known as having been inspired by that experience
the way he sings is just his style - he sings like this on every song in the band - this is why he was so popular
Song that puts smile on your face from begining to the end... The Cure, iconic band!!!
Saw them live last week, great live band even after over 40 years on stage, so fresh, so funny and playing for over two and a half hours. Awesome!
Had a friend who absolutely loved The Cure and bands like them back in the 80’s and 90’s. As a metal head, I always referred to them all as ‘four pasty white guys from England’. But as I get older, definitely learning to appreciate their music and their message more.
And they influenced lots of heavy bands from the Deftones to Smashing Pumpkins and NIN.
This is the song and album that made them worldwide stars
Loving the way Lex is bopping away and grinning from the very start of the song... it's so infectious and exactly the reaction of all the Cure fans throughout the years
Lucky enough to see them in 2018. Absolutely brilliant live. A lot of old goths and loads of young fans xx
30 years ago my then young brother in law said "If thats the cure I'd hate to hear the cause"
Cute little pop number by everyones favorite goth band the CURE. He know looks like everyones Aunt Edna, however, live, his voice is excellent and good as it was 40 years ago - a real treat.
When he was really young he looked like Ben Affleck :)
ahhhh... thank you for reacting to this one. It's one of my favorite songs.
Long Live WLIR 92.7 - gone but NOT forgotten!
(Where's our gold medal?)
The cure are fucking amazing. - he’s just talking about someone you love not being near you. Not literally seperated by a body water
One of the greatest pop songs ever written.
The Cure was definitely an 80's icon of Alternative Rock.
Absolutely LOVE this song. Great to listen with headphones with your eyes closed... of course, most of The Cure songs are great that way ;) I love listening and focusing on an instrument, then listening again and focusing on a different instrument.
"Pictures of You" is another great one.
Just takes me back to my college days in the 80s. The Cure and The Smiths. That alternative music for us students to relate too
This dude has been married to one women his entire career. Mary and him are the true rock n roll power couple.
This song. So many memories...
Boys Don't Cry, Love Song, Friday I'm In Love, A Letter To Elise
Need to react to those too.
Lalabye to me..
“He sounds like he just woke up.” Wait til she sees him.
"Friday I'm in Love" is a must, it always reminds me to my childhood, I remember watching the video sitting on the coutch with ny father, and my uncle, great times 💯👌🏻
The Cure was one of the best Indy rock bands of the 80s/90s! Robert Smith’s voice is so unique and dreamy! ❤️❤️
My favorite band since high school 🖤
Back in the day (80'S) music set for radio. Not so much computers. Back in the day you listen to whole albums.
The Cure are so amazing. I've been a fan for 30 years 😍😍
Makes me dance around every time 😀
