It's not that he's "nasally", it's that he's Brittish.
Liam Gallagher has that “nasally” sound too makes sense
Yes haha
His voice always reminds me of Terry Hall too
He’s Bri-ish. Bloody hell.
@@marentes133 Thats just an old school Manchester accent
Brad got it right away- melancholy. Their style was always depressed, gothic, dark, artsy, unique.
Yes! Brad hit the nail on the head...
I would tend to disagree. Many Cure songs are upbeat. Friday I'm In Love & Love Cats jump to mind.
@@ghill628 Also Let's Go to Bed, In Between Days, Close to Me, Just Like Heaven, Pictures of You, etc. Even Lovesong is upbeat, to an extent.
@@gamwisesamgee7400 I totally agree. It always bothers me when people complain about Robert Smith or the Cure being dark and moppy. Generally they aren't familiar with the catalog. Are there darks songs? Sure, just like most bands.
Everything that's goth
He actually hits on a very real truth in this song...I remember my Mum dying when I was just a young un, but with my father being a typical truck driver I was always taught that boys don't cry. I remember having to run a bath and cry under water when she passed, and then when I got out, having to pretend nothing is wrong. It's pretty cruel the way males have to deal with things sometimes.
My family always pushed 2 times when it is ok for a man to cry in front of others. The birth of your first child and the death of your mama.
My father was a very stoic man. I only ever saw him cry when my mama died. I didn't even see him when his mama died. I got home, I saw him, we hugged and cried quietly for about a minute, then we got to work on her funeral without another word being said.
Bruh your dads a bit messed up I get not crying but when your mum dies that’s tuff
@@user-rl7wu7qj6q yeh I get ya...I guess now I am older, thinking back... maybe he couldn't deal with it himself. I dunno...grief makes you do strange things I guess. :/
Blessings mate…I get it.
@@manna6618absolutely right. No one is messed up in that situation very sorry for your loss.
One of the greatest rock bands ever. Robert Smith writes lyrics that are only close to home. Almost 45 years later and they still are going.
Such a great track. Robert Smith for me is one of the greatest songwriters. Up there with Lennon and McCartney, having the ability to write pop like this or write dark lyrics with a catchy tune, then write dark and gloomy songs like Blood flowers, Fascination Street, Last day of summer. If you like like this, listen to Inbetween days, close to me and Mint Car.
ruclips.net/video/hlNOtSpQZmA/видео.html
Yes he is THE greatest.
A forest
Lennon yes McCartney no way that shallow person was all about a tune not like the cure where depth is everywhere
Dark like the album "Pornography" ....my fave Cure album tied with Head on the door
Omg yes, more from The Cure! Get some Siouxsie and the Banshees while you're at it!
I second this notion! Good call Siouxsie Sioux is a living legend! Start with Spellbound and go from there!
@@shanebrown4146 I’m totally down for a Goth Stream there are so many amazing bands for Brad and Lex to discover (Bauhaus, Clan of Xymox, Gene Loves Jezebel, Skinny Puppy, early Ministry) just to name a few
Start a goth stream with Nephilim's Moodchild and try to ease them towards Bella Legosis Dead :)
@@shanebrown4146 let’s scare them later lol
Joy Division
One of the great bands of all time . Every track gives you a different feeling. Robert Smith is a true legend of music.
You guys don't realize this song alone gave birth to a whole generation of punk/emo/goth rock bands
Such a great song. The Cure. An original sound from a legendary band. Brad nails the subtext to the vocal performance with a discernment bordering on omniscience.
Yes, he nailed it. But I don't think you know what the word, "omniscience", means.
Robert Smith has a super thick British accent. His music can take you from child-like happiness to the loneliest painful places in relationships... like no other band.
My favorite band. Robert Smith has a very distinct sound when he sings. Their library is so deep. Hope you two review more from one of the greatest bands.
Old guy here. I lost interest when they released Fascination Street, but I was big into A Forest, Killing an Arab, that era. Don’t get me wrong, I still enjoyed their “poppy goth”, but I was a less ardent fan. I was never a black lace goth, more of a black t-shirt and skinny black jeans goth and cosmetics was too much hassle. 😛 I also liked Sisters of Mercy and NIN.
The singer is known for his melancholy style. You hit the nail on the head
I loved this band in high school. Perfect for angsty teenagers. The remix of this song is pretty awesome as well.
My favourite band of all time. They sound exactly the same live as they did when they first appeared. Robert's voice has not changed one bit. His voice is instantly recognisable. He is the King of the Goths.
I'd really love seeing you react to their brilliant songs Lullaby and Lovesong.
Just drop them in at the deep end, huh? I like your style.
@@evanerys lol
It amazes me how this song always makes me want to cry for him regardless of the upbeat music. The realization of losing someone you really love because of some stupid shit you did is incredibly painful. Holding something like that in would be very difficult. These guys dont hold back with brutal honesty, that is true art to me.
check out their more popular songs, "Lovesong", "Friday, I'm in Love", "Lullaby" and "Just Like Heaven"
No, check out their good songs like Killing an Arab, A Forest, Fire in Cairo.
Faith, drowning man, 17 seconds, a strange day…
I between days
Inbetween days
do you mean 'Friday I'm in Love'?
It is a complex vocal performance. There's a sneering sarcastic overtone with that stuffy, on the verge of tears feeling, along with the melancholy that you mentioned and all of it captured in a sound recording.
This is early Cure, their later songs are more catchy and fun, or moody and deep. The Cure only gets better the more songs you listen to them.
Please react to Close To Me, Lovesong, or Friday I'm In Love by The Cure. And if you're in the mood for something creepy, listen to Lullaby.
Gotta say this might be one of their catchiest tunes ever. Love The Cure.
I think their earlier stuff is better, more consistent. They have an early greatest hits collection, Staring at the Sea, that basically has all the Cure anyone could want. Of their later work I like Pictures of You best.
@@flibber123 Disintegration is probably my favorite album. Head on the Door a close second.
In between days and catch also
You can add "Pictures of you " too. ✌️
A Forest is one of their best imo
I believe there are two kinds of Cure admirers; Those who knew them in the 70's, and those who didn't.
The Cure is one of the most amazing bands ever imo, especially live. Robert Smith is a genius musician and seems to be one of the truly good people in that industry. Check out thier song Burn, a different side of thier sound. His voice really blends in with thier moodier tracks alot better imo, but everything they do is really good.
Great reaction! Next try "A Forest" by the Cure! Your subs will love it (and so will you)!
That's probably my favorite song by them!
@@shanebrown4146 I've seen it live four times - and I think the best one was the Wish 1992 tour. Absolutely amazing.
@@shanebrown4146 Ah! Yeah I missed wild mood swings - but caught them on Bloodflowers. It's hard to pick a favourite really. But wish sticks with me because it was my first. :)
The Cure is post-punk, romantic goth band. this is off for their first album when they were just a three piece.
My favorite group! Their best song is “Charlotte Sometimes” and “ The Primary.” Those are my faves. They are so fantastic live. I just recently turned my 11 year old granddaughter to them and she adores them! Great song choice guys.
The video for Charlotte Sometimes rules. The other song is "Primary", not "The Primary". The Cure's best song is "A Strange Day".
I love his collab with The Chvrches on How not to drown or with Gorillaz on Strange Timez
I saw them 4x...stellar sound. Great theater, or presence. Pornography is my favorite album. Shake Dog Shake is a great under the radar tune
@@shanebrown4146 I didn't know that. Any links??? LOL
I believe it. Phenomenal Live Song
@@p.rick12 Shake Dog Shake is SO good.
That’s because he’s singing in his natural accent. He doesn’t have a cold, he’s just English. 😂
One of the most memorable concerts I ever saw in 1989 in NOLA! There is a huge rabbit hole of early music from the Cure, in my opinion has the greatest pop song ever written "Just Like Heaven". They've got at least a couple of dozen songs that are a must listen.
My fav concert is in orange
Robert Smith is awesome....loved him since 1985 when I first was introduced to The Cure in the 6th grade.
This song in particular is one of my life-long faves.
@@AgentBeans nice, that was my 2nd cassette. My first one was Standing on the Beach, the Singles.
"He sounds a little melancholy" - Brad you just described The Cure perfectly!
A must! Heard this song back in 79. Looking back, one can see how music tastes changes right before each decade.
You must be British then, because their music didn't really hit the rest of the world until the mid-80s, and even then it was underground. It wasn't until Disintegration that most people even heard of the band. That was late 1989.
The Cure are so good. So. Good. Anything--ANYTHING--off Disintegration is a must hear. For the older catalogue World War is very good, as is Killing An Arab (don't judge it by the title). A personal favorite is Jumping Someone Else's Train.
or Forest
Ian Dury and The Blockheads - Hit Me With Your Rhythm Stick
Yep. My older female cousin in Chicago was like a huge "Cure" fan. She was "Claire " in "The Breakfast Club ".
This is 1979 , Robert Smith´s voice sounds so young. The Cure has plenty of hits that could be reacated to.
I think this is the original vocal version (he re-recorded it in 1986). When he recorded this version (1979) he was only 19. His voice changed a lot in the following few years as he found his style.
I absolutely love The Cure, Like Cockatoos, One More Time, Just Like Heaven, the entire album Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me. I was in 6th grade when I was first introduced to them and that was the first album I ever heard. And people are right, each one is so different yet totally The Cure. That's one deep rabbit whole when you start listening to them. Btw, lead singer met his first and only wife in school. He's still with her and still in love with her. He himself is interesting.
The Cure! "A Forest" next song.
Y'all need to do Siouxsie and the Banshees next! Another post punk, goth rock band.
Great alternative/punk band. Probably in my top 10, especially their early stuff, like this. Love Y'All
Many people don't like his voice. "Emotional" is a better word to describe the music and lyrics. The words are almost poetry. His writing skills improved dramatically in the late 80s. Crazy amazing wordsmith, Robert is.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee He has a good range and does well without pitch correction. The biggest critique I’ve heard is that he sounds whiny.
Hm, "many" people "don't" like his voice? Interesting. In every other reaction channel nobody says they don't like Robert's voice. This is first channel that says it lol. "Sinus infection"? Bro, whatever she's smoking, I don't want that. And the guy always laughs at the girl's descriptions like she says something super funny lmao. Like parents laughing at their little kids' unfunny quips/shenanigans.
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee Specifically The Cure, nobody talks about his "sinus infection" or that something's wrong with Robert's voice. "Lex" is first who said that lol. It sounds like nitpicking. And "Brad" of course had to agree with her lol.
@@spongebobandplanktonshould2920 I grew up in the age of hair metal, most of my friends don't care for his voice. Those kids say the darndest things... 🙂
@@Spo-Dee-O-Dee I'm not sure limited is the right way to describe it. He has decent pitch, range of about 3.2 octaves (probably more). But I kinda know what you mean - because he always sounds like Robert Smith, even when he is singing in character - like Lullaby, or Harold and Joe... he's definitely not a technical singer. But he does manage to get some pretty raw emotion in his delivery.
Now you're listening to The Cure a very goth kid band, you're getting closer and closer to Dead Can Dance, a quintessential goth band. Ubiquitous Mr Lovegrove is still waiting.
This song is such an anthem, guys.
Such an iconic riff! Love it.
In the 80s men wear shamed about crying but nowadays we’re free. Love Robert Smith 👍❤️
I happened upon these reactors the other night and tonight I may or may not have just spent the last two hours watching and commenting on every single video.
The Cure. This is the birth of goth and emo. Total legends. They could still sell out huge stadiums now and they were underground and unrecognized by the radio for a long part of their career. They birthed an entire genre, an entire movement of dress, an entire movement of style. And yes he’s whiny. This is real emo!
The Cure are one of the greatest band or all time.
Lex: "Sinus infection!" Brad: "Melancholy." Gotta love these reactions!
The base line and drums really drive this song.
A musician with the band Robert Smith stepped in when their lead singer left - and boy - he might not have the most tuneful of voices, he sure made it up, more and more so, with personal poetry.
Another band I’m a massive fan of, check out - in this order (lol): Watching Me Fall / The Caterpillar / This Is A lie / Want / Catch (very personal fave) / Lullaby / Close To Me / Love Song / The 13th / 39 / Fascination Street / Why Can’t I Be You? / High / Gone! / In Between Days / Just Like Heaven / Treasure / Pictures of You / A Letter to Elise / Bare / Where The Birds Always Sing / Maybe Someday / There Is No If / Six Different Ways / Why Can’t I Be Like you / The Last Day Of Summer / Hot Hot Hot!!! / To Wish Impossible Things / Friday I’m In Love / Mint Car / The Loudest Sound / 10:15 Saturday Night / A Forest / A Short Term Effect /
The cool thing about this song you would think it was recorded in the mid to late' 80s but it was recorded in 1979 & released in 1980 the song is about a guy getting dumped and he really wants his girlfriend back but he can't show it hints the title Boys Don't Cry.
Thanks for explaining the self-explanatory lyrics to us.
@@FFM0594 FFM0594 your very welcome 😊
He now looks like everyone's AUNT EDNA! However, live, even to this day - he sounds excellent - very few musicians can keep the same quality voice - but he does. Very deserved of being in the ROCK N ROLL HALL OF FAME.
Natural singijng voice of robert smith, so unique but gives character and soul to every the cure song
That song was put out on the late 70’s on their first EP Three Imiginary Boys. I would love to see you react to songs a decade later, maybe Pictures of you or Wendy Time
The Cure, Six different ways. Very obscure and yet catchy.
One of my fave bands. Can you listen to 10:15 saturday night? And "the head on the door" the whole album is spectacular
The Cure are my all time favourite band. I got into them in the early 80s when I was 13 and my older sister brought a tape back from her first term at uni. They were a fairly unknown cult band at the time and none of the other kids at my school had ever heard of them.
This is early Cure from 1978 when they had quite a raw sound (They formed in 1976 at the height of punk). Robert Smith famously used a mega-cheap £20 guitar bought from Woolworths. Another excellent Cure track from this time is 'Three Imaginary Boys' I'd love to see Brad's reaction to the lyric structure which is very clever.
The Cure have a HUGE catalogue of great songs. IMO their album 'Pornography' is their dark master piece. check out 'A Hundred Years' or 'A strange Day'. I'd also recommend a cover of the latter by Grand Duchy (aka The Pixies). One of their later albums 'Disintergration' also rates highly with many people.
The Cure aren't exactly known for happy songs, but they do have some more poppy, commercial hits. Check out: Love cats, Friday I'm in Love or Caterpillar Girl. Lullaby is fun too (be sure to watch the video!)
Of their later stuff I's suggest: From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea, Disintergration and perhaps Bare.
N.B. Fun fact: Robert Smith was also a part-time member of Siouxie & The Banshees for a couple of years. Additionally he formed a side-band called 'The Glove' with Steve Severin of the Banshees while Sioxie and Budgie did their own side project 'The Creatures' who are good too.
Siouxie Sioux is one of the most influential female singers in music history so you really need to check them out sometime. A good place to start would be Spellbound. Other tracks I'd recommend are Israel, Hong Kong Garden, Candyman, 92 degrees and Rhapsody. Their cover of Iggy Pop's classic 'The Passenger' is well worth a listen too.
I was lucky enough to see the Cure concert in the 80s and the 90s
and when Robert Smith played guitar for Siouxsie and the banshees for a short very short time....
The 80s are the best!!! Thank you GOD for making me an 80s kid.
I love them they have some great songs.
The Cure’s album Disintegration was the best album of the 90’s. Another little tidbit, the album came out in the 80’s.
At this time in music….bands were using light hearted melodies with dark lyrics like the smiths and the cure, U2
seems like your fans all have decent taste based upon the reaction clips you are making, love it, great selections etc
Great album! Love "Subway Song"on this album because it's so weird.
The Cure is almost like other alt rock/ post-punk bands, The Smiths/Morrissey, early U2, REM, and Joy Division.. Upbeat music, sorrow like lyrics. 🎸 Melancholy (moody....happy/sad). Yall called it! This was typical '80s/'90s alternative rock vibe. This was '80s alt rock (late '70s) jangle pop/college rock.. Post punk.. Part of new wave. Goth rock too. Listen to " A Forest" from The Cure! That one is really good. The Cure is one of the pioneers of alternative rock and helped get alt rock from underground to mainstream. I was in school when they started become mainstreamish (early 90s?) Check out other similar bands ( more Gothic, darkwave) like Sioxsee and the Banshees, Killing Joke, Frozen Autumn, Clan of Xymox, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc.
Genius... bitter sweet melancholy sums up the Cure! You should explore both their earlier darker stuff but also newer 'happy' songs :)
My sister used to listen this band back when they were popular! I definitely remember this one. Thanks for reacting. There's a band called Boys Don't Cry and they did a song in 1986 called "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" it's quite funny.
The Cure ? Simply brilliant !
My favorite band for 36 years, I have seen them live 18 times. Please check out the song Disintegration.
He's British that's why he sounds that way....lol
Nailed it Brad. He’s as melancholy as it gets.
Jus do more of the Cure!! Just Like Heaven, Fascination Street, Love Cats, Friday,I'm in Love, Love song...
1:25 Brad is on point with his analysis
One of the most classic alternative rock songs to exist.
Wonderful song. Please check out ‘In between Days’ by them. It’s some of the best musicianship of all time. Fantastic song
Great reaction brilliant tune. Robert Smith. Brilliant vocalist very early in the Cure’s journey. Aw best Mac
I love The Cure you really should listen to “A Forest” it’s their masterpiece
Fascination Street. Do fascination Street.
It's the most badass Cure song.
BIG CLASSIC / LEGENDARY / BIG RESPECT / OLD SCHOOL REPRESENT FOREVER / 80'S 90'S ...
This is just how the lead singer sings - its not his emoting the lyrics of the song necessarily. I love The Cure
Love The Cure. They've been around like 40+ years.
I reckon you'll both like 'Lullaby' and 'close to me'. Both class.
Im looking forward to you guys getting further into The Cure catalog.
Well, he is British, and they do love that sound? So there, Lex! :P
Beyond that, such a wonderful song sound beyond even the British!
You have to hear one of their later songs. He's one of the most legendary singers of all time. Check out their catalog.
Disintergration is one of the greatest albums ever made, and any track of it is worth your time..!!
Classic from my punk rock weirdo teen years. Good stuff. They are definitely depressive and moody. Try The Smith's, or Morrissey
Aha the rabbit hole of the Cure. So many grand songs
That's his voice. Love it, hate it. It is what it is.
Song is powerful. Timeless. All guys will feel this way at some point.
I love the Cure. Love everything about their music. But this song just is something special.
"A Town Called Malice" by The Jam is a phenomenal song!
Try- pictures, letter to Elise, a forest, disintegration, lullaby,
From the cure pop era, sparkly tunes with (spot on brad ) melancholic lyrics. In between days is epic, close to you utterly encompasses them. Robert Smith is married to his childhood sweetheart, I’ve always thought that this is what allows him to tap into song about loss & isolation so well, as it’s so alien to him to be alone. But there is humour to them. Love cats 💗🐈 , caterpillar 🐛 are 2 of the most brilliant poptastic tunes available to the human ears
Dippin back into the alien we didn’t know we needed. Robert Smith! If you’re wondering look into his episode of Southpark where he saves the world.
Brilliant band. Going to see them in November. Can't wait. My favourite is probably From the Edge of the Deep Green Sea.
@@shanebrown4146 Interesting. Let's hope they do that in November!
That takes me back to another time, thanks
I’ve seen them live at Pinkpop in 2019. AMAZING band!
Robert Smith doesn't give a fuck attitude is legendary.
That's just his vocal sound. It's kind of the typical late 70s early 80s sound. He's not known for his vocal skills, but has a unique sound. The Cure are goths really.
The Cure are brilliant. So 80s
To me the Cure will always be a 70's band. Check out their John Peel sessions on YT.
They wrote some brilliant songs.
This name means so much to me. So cool to see people hearing these songs for the first time
Heresy putting ketchup in your spaghetti! It's savagery!
