This song is about the quest for power, and how it can have unfortunate consequences. Curt Smith of Tears For Fears said that although musically this is quite a catchy song, its lyrical theme is actually pretty dark. "The concept is quite serious - it's about everybody wanting power, about warfare and the misery it causes,

I was a teenager in the eighties and there was this ever-looming feeling that we were going to have a World War soon. There was always talk in the news about the nuclear arms race and there were several movies dedicated to world war 3 like Red Dawn, War Games, The day after, ect.
We really lived the whole second half of the decade expecting to be blown up at any moment.
The lyrics to the song which came out around 85 seems to capture this essence.

Talking about WW3 films... Don't forget "The Day After" (it was on network TV, had disclaimers every 15 minutes, and was still a disturbing depiction of life after a nuclear strike).

Best pop song of the 80’s….I was 15 when they s came out and I actually liked it and the video even though it was a metal head. The video is PURE 80’s: had pay phones, 3 wheel ATVs, ski sunglasses, and old school gas pumps. Take me back there!

Always remember when listening to an 80's sad or deep song that we were living under the constant reality of possible nuclear war. The Cold War was at it's highest tension with Russia and the USA spending record amounts on nuclear programs and even teenagers and young adults couldn't totally escape the stress.

Might be worth noting their early lyrics were heavily influenced by psycholgist Arthur Janov's 'Primal Scream' therapy theories like their song 'Shout (Let It All Out)' and even their band name.

Who wouldn’t give up their smart phone and Internet to go back to the 80s or music rule the world because it was truthful. No lip-synching no autoplay no glitter cannons no ass shaking. Just people living life, knowing decision because they had vision.

    A top 5 quintessential 80s song.
All 3 of their 80s albums (The Hurting, Songs from the Big Chair, and Sowing the seeds of Love) hold up so well. Saw them play in 2010, amazing.
"The Working Hour" (epic sax), and the wistful "Advice for the young at heart" are my current TFF go to's

Last song written for the album Songs from the Big Chair. This is the most popular album of Tears for Fears. Rekeased in 1985.
Written by Chris Hughes, Ian Stanley and Roland Orzabal. IS played keyboards before he quit. CH was hired to produce the album. He was the drummer for Adam Ant.
The song has a drum loop like Waterfront, written and performed by Simple Minds. CH played the loop and asked RO to play 2 guitar chords. This bored RO. IS played synthesizers throughout the song. RO wrote the lyrics.
Curt Smith sang the lead vocals.
This song was the 3rd one released. It became their most popular song!
Suggested next TFF video: Break It Down Again. 🇬🇧
Influence. Glass Tiger singer Alan Frew said that this song inspired their hit Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone. 🇨🇦
Suggested video Glass Tiger. Don't Forget Me When I'm Gone.
