For me, this is THE iconic song of the 80's... awesome vibe, the kind you rolled down your window and cruised the coast, or hills, or on your patio... Their "Songs from the Big Chair" album spawned a few hits as well as this song; their sound is timeless. There aren't many songs that get you to bop along, Bethany, so anyone who's new knows right off, you can appreciate a great groove when you hear it. LOVED your reaction, keep the hits coming; your choices are memory churning and thought provoking.... now THAT takes talented observations and SOLID musical knowledge on which to found it all. PEACE!!

@@RobertWrightOneManCovers I like how Oleta Adams said Rolands voice was, "So Wide," it just fills space and so many adjacent tones.
Roland talking about this song though said that he simply couldn't sing it as it sounded 'wrong' and then asked Curt to give it a go and "Everybody Wants to Rule the World" sounded perfect.

same, same. I was a sophmore in HS, and I was deep into Black Sabbath, Van Halen, Alice Cooper, etc. Our French class took a field trip to Biltmore Castle in Asheville, NC. We all rushed through it and got bored. A group of us all just went out in the middle of the front.....lawn? Someone had a boom box and I happened to have this cassette, so we all just laid down in the grass staring at the clouds listing to this cassette. Fond memories.

Curt Smith always had it easy, as Roland Orzabal said -- "I really have to work at it, but Curt opens his mouth and it just comes out." As he's gotten older, he's pulled his foot off the gas a bit and become much more surgical in his tone generation and pitch (just look at the concentration and focus on his face), countering the depth of his aging voice with clarity and lightness, which (whether conscious or not) is a brilliant way to extend the life of a voice. These guys are an absolute treasure and possibly at the zenith of their live power as we speak. I just saw them months ago and the whole show was a revelation start to finish.

All that to say that I had the privilege off hearing them in concert last year. Their newly released album in 2023 is excellent. Something I usually never say about older bands releasing newer stuff. Everyone wants to hear what made them famous. They played a lot from their new album but played ALL the famous 80’s songs. It was amazing. Probably my favorite concert I have ever attended. The odd thing is that TFF and Hall and Oates toured together in 1 year.
Oates should reserve the right ✅ to sell. Jim Vallance sold his share of songs 🎵. His partner for many of the songs is Bryan Adams. He did not complain. The 2 had a falling out, but they reunited.
Say It Usn't So , Daryl Hall. He should not have any problem with John Oates selling his share of Electric Blue.

I really enjoyed your analysis. Tears For Fears are the best band to come out of the 80's. In my opinion Curt has a lovely voice, it can sound soulful in parts. Would it be possible for you to do a similar analysis on Roland. I think Roland has the broader range, his voice is more suited to songs that need a powerful delivery. Head Over Heels would be a good song to analyse. It would be good to hear how you feel their two voices combine, they have sung a few songs the whole way through together, the latest being The Tipping Point.

  • @BearDownMU

All respect to Curt Smith, I would love to see you react to a song primarily sung by Roland. I thing he is a much more dynamic singer and his voice is insane with lots of range. I've seen them live a couple of times in the last year and he still sounds unreal. I would suggest grabbing a live version of Woman in Chains with Oleta Adams. Some serious vocal chops are being displayed in that song.

Always been a great song, with the strong vocal "married" to a monster groove that stays with you. Shout-out to the drummer for matching the fills on the record, too. That's not as easy as it looks, I can tell you! Roland's guitar playing was spot-on, as well. TFF was always a very "composed" band. The song "Woman in Chains" is not my favorite, but the studio version really builds beautifully, with layers of instruments and vocal tracks that explode at the end. Well worth listening to on good headphones. Roland sings that one with a tremendous assist from Oleta Adama, who just KILLS. And, because they loved Phil Collins's drum fill on "In the Air Tonight," they brought him in to play starting halfway through the song. It's just a magical use of the studio, overdubs, synth voices, percussion, and layer after layer of sound.

Drummer here, yes this is a deceptively difficult song to play, probably because the original used a drum machine. The groove is easy until you have to put in the hi hat accents off the beat. Damn near impossible! The drummer here is not playing the full part, he’s only doing the accents (half the notes).

Tears For Fears and The Outfiled are my fav 80's brittish bands, As for TFF, Curt is great but to my taste Orzabal's voice its what identifies TFF.

In my opinion the other guy Roland Orzabal is even a better singer. He's easily in my top 3 with Peter Gabriel and Freddie Mercury. You need to listen to songs like "Shout", "Sowing the seeds of love", "Elemental" or the amazing duo "Woman on chains" with Oleta Adams.

I was on the fence with a lot of music from the 80’s for a long time. Mostly in the 2000’s but I relearned to appreciate it. Sounds crazy since I’m 69 and the 80’s was the MTV years which was always on to see the next big video or your favorite song. But in saying all that this song in particular is one of my favorites. It’s nice to see and hear them again and sounding marvelous.. Great analysis.. I may have mentioned this before but I honestly enjoy your facial expressions during your viewing, a lot going on in your head and I always appreciate your expertise.. 👍

Tears for Fears has a wonderful array of memorable songs. I've listened to them all and I saw them perform at Red Rocks which was unforgettable and indelible. In some of the darkest times in my life, though, I've often turned to "Goodnight Song," which is in my opinion (along with some songs from "Seeds of Love") one of the most soulful and heart penetrating songs from "Elemental." I'd love to hear what you think of that particular tune. Thank you for your Channel and I love your analyses.

You need to check out Procol Harum's "A Whiter Shade of Pale" 2006 live performance from Denmark with Orchestra! To give you some context, this song came out in the late 1960's. So this is about 40 years removed from the original release. Lead singer Gary Brooker's voice sounds eerily similar to the original. It's moving and awesome!

Absolute masterclass in singing and you will cry :) Thanks for doing what you do, great channel and I learn a lot.

Trying to figure it out, and I think you are right with Curt's voice. It's really good and you can clearly hear his original vocals reflected in this, but the way he slides off notes is different, and more brightness, and less bass quality in the vocals. But still he and Rowland have aged their voices really well.

  • @flightgamer7849
    @flightgamer7849 Год назад +2

As a complete non-expert it seems that the only adjustment he has had to make with age is to become way more deliberate when singing the higher notes in terms of mouth shape etc.
Does the fact that he has stayed so small framed help with avoiding a slowly deepening sound? Curious
