The best Beatles song that the Beatles never wrote. I'm surprised that you seemed to notice a 90s vibe when it actually got late 60s/psychedelic vibes. Maybe because Oasis were also a band that highly referenced The Beatles and The Kinks all the time.
Well said
Very true. This was very Beatlesque.
So right,Lex also brought up Oasis, you know what they said about them😊
Yep
I think the oasis track " all around the world " sounds a little like this song in places !
Lex become one of my favorite persons when she said music went off a cliff when it hit 90's and 2000's. With a few exceptions she couldn't be more correct. 😄👍🏻
Music went over a cliff with the re-introduction of the boy bands ( NSYNC, Backstreet boys ). Also other acts like Christina Aguilera / Britney Spears. And it's still not quite recovered yet.
Pertinent to this song since the destruction of culture and national homogeneity were/are priorities of the global elite to be replaced by their empty manufactured culture.
It is one big PsyOp to demoralise us into submission which appears to have succeeded given the traitors that masquerade as our governments would have been hung in the streets just a few decades ago for the crimes against humanity they have committed.
Music can't just be your taste don't be greedy like this record sing about
@@petermizon4344 it's not about taste, it's about quality. There is really very little clever or surprising music being written nowadays.
@@petermizon4344 Record industries try to control everything you listen to and shape your taste to get the most money out of you
Wow. I forgot how great this song is. Tears For Fears was a thinking man’s 80s group.
Exactly!
Its a great track in it's own right, with so many moods and vibes. Layer on layer of sounds and voices. Yet it's also a great tribute to the Beatles in their psychedelic period in 1967. You can hear echoes of the Serjeant Pepper Album , Penny Lane, I am the Walrus, Fool on the Hill etc blowing through this song.
The whole album is pretty great. My favorite track is 'Advice for the young at heart'.
Beatlesque number from them for sure. You're right about the time frame as it was released in 1989 as a precursor to 90's sound. These guys are still going strong as they just released a great new LP this year (The Tipping Point) and was lucky enough to see them earlier in the summer with Garbage. It's clear 'live' that they still have that passion for performing 🔥
I saw the Big Chair tour when I was a teenager & again this most recent tour. I don't know if they've gotten better over decades or if I just appreciate them more now. Probably some of both. But that recent show was defo a musical highlight of 2022 for me.
The Beatles were shite pal, utter garbage! They wrote a song every week, to feed the hunger of teenaged girls, pure shite!
I saw them in concert a month or so ago…they were fabulous. Sounded just like the records almost 40 years on
Woman in Chains next one from Tears for Fears. What I love about this band is the different lead vocal roles taken by Curt and Roland across their songs. Personally love Pale Shelter, Change, Mad World, Shout and Rule the World. Woman in Chains you will love watch the video for context. I also recently rediscovered Mothers Talk, the US remix version.
TFF pulled all the stops on this tune. It's a beautiful work of musical art. Even down to the clever "not quite 1812 overture, and not quite Penny Lane" trumpet passage. ;)
The first time I heard this I was coming from "Shout" etc and was blown away by their new maturity. It's a great album!
Definitively here is Beatles' influence at their most. Psicodellic music from the 60's. This is pure gold!
This gem comes from what is STILL in my top 10 list of best rock albums ever made. The whole album is PURE Roland Orzabal, with no constraints and apparently an endless budget for production. Not a bad tune on the entire release. ☮
I'm a blues and rock and roller kind of guy but tears for fears is absolutely one of my all-time favorite bands. There's no question that they have legendary musical talent.
Another 90s Tears for Fears hit that you should check out is “Break it Down Again”.
Every song on Elemental is great.
Woman in chains is amazing.
Great song
@@Ranadkins that album was just Roland Orzabal. He and Curt had a bad falling out after "The Seeds of Love" and Roland took the name. Elemental is a very good album, but there were several angry tracks directed at Curt (along with the one new track on "Tears Roll Down"). I was very happy when they reunited in 2005 for the "Everybody Loves A Happy Ending" album.
@@paulhewes7333 yes it’s just Roland, but the whole album is great. I was glad to see them back together as well then. You do know they released another album earlier this year, The Tipping Point.
I totally agree with Lex, the future of music went right over a cliff, crashed and burned.
They were going for - and achieved - a 60;s Beatles vibe.
No conspiracy theories here whatsoever. Just a message: Be kind, help sowing the seeds of love instead of spreading hate, get over your pride and be nice to each other.
@@leodejongful Are you trying to say there are no actual conspiracies?!
It's similar to the "Make love, not war" anti-war slogan commonly associated with the American counterculture of the 1960s
@@MarkLikesCoffee860 1989 was the 'daisy age'
Brad, what is this? Keepers of the first estate? Intelligence, light and truth has always existed.....at least for .5% of the 1%.
@@annother3350 if you know about it, it's not really a conspiracy. Secrets are something you tell one other person. The juggled balls necessary to keep any conspiracy secret are nearly impossible to keep in the air. It always falls apart. But lots of people are drawn to them in order to have a reason for the world not being to their liking, like they are special and one "in the know" above the sheeple. Conspiracy theory hunting is like an adult pacifier.
This tune is very 60's Beetle influenced, the music, the message, and even the groovy video visuals
Herbie?
Yes, I thought Beatles as soon as I heard it.
A complex but very good / original song. 'Break It Down Again' is another really good song of theirs.
August 1989 release date... there’s a lot of Beatles influences in this song ...
Late 80's: There was a huge 60's retro renaissance happening. The Beatles were rereleased on CD for the first time, "Classic Rock" radio became a thing, and our generation was waking up to the fact that the 60's and 70's offered so much more than the tepid pop of the day. Tie-dye was back in fashion! Acts like Tears for Fears, World Party, and the second acts of actual 60's and 70's icons like the Travelling Wilburys, The Beach Boys, and many others were putting the 60's aesthetic back in the mainstream. This song was a huge hit because it tapped into those cultural waves. Our generation was starved for real, organic music. It was a great time to be a teenager!
Also during the early '90s.
Always loved Tears for Fears when I was in high school...great band of the "Second British Invasion". In the early 80's these guys rocked...Molly Ringwald movies, British Rock, and sleepovers. A great band. In middle school I was a huge Culture Club fan. Love him or hate him...Boy George is a great singer!
So many good 80s Brit Bands , it was a pleasure to be in my 20s then . For anyone who wants to dip into 80s Brit Music here are some names Culture Club , Wham , Style Council, Blow Monkeys , Madness , The Specials , Deacon Blue , ABC , Spandau Ballet
@@catman2629 Oh yes...in middle school I loved Boy George and Culture Club. My sister and late brother in law stood outside in the rain to buy tickets! By 1985 I was into hard rock...people would say Boy George is gay...I was too naive then to know or care! I'm glad I loved him so much that I love everyone...
Masterpiece.
Agreed
Nevermind Oasis, this was their 'Beatles' song. When I first heard this, in 1989, I remember thinking every band tries to write at least one Beatles-style song. This is theirs
An audial and visual masterpiece!
It also sounds good and looks good.
One of the greatest Pop bands ever.
This was and is a brilliant song, and comes from a brilliant album.
Definitely a tribute to The Beatles. Message is basically that Love trumps hate. Saw them in concert recently, which was mind blowing-ly good. Check out "Woman in Chains," will give you chills. And you’re right Lex, popular music has gone downhill, fatally around ‘97. Result of corporations taking over the music industry. The final outcome of a decade of deregulation, starting with Reagan. A lot of what this song was railing against, in the name of love.
This has latter years (Sgt. Pepper's / MMT) Beatles callback vibes combined with Peter Gabriel "Big Time" stop motion music video animation. Very cool mash up of music that crosses 3 decades of influence.
One of my all-time favorites. Such spacey, layered, Beatlesque music.
Got it Lex. It's grounded in 60's. Live orchestras were used. A mid-80's tribute to the mid-60's fantastically done
Such a great Beatles Sgt Pepper vibe. I love this song. Hopefully we can get past the last 4 years and start sowing the seeds of love again. Damn I sure hope so.
I really hope you're right, my friend. With the ugly Pandora's Box that was flung open across America several years ago giving aid and comfort to domestic terrorists and the threat to democracy itself on Benedict Donald and his Cult of Traitors hit list, we are in a terrible point of crisis right now. I hope those of us with good will can overcome what's ahead of us.
This came out when I was in my freshman year of high school, and it's always given me Beatles vibes, both musically and thematically. The song is about swallowing ones pride, letting go of hate, and spreading love: ideas straight out of the 60s. Trends tend to come back every 20 years later, and there was definitely a retro 60s movement in the late 80s, and it showed in fashion, movies (lots of movies about the Vietnam War were made during that time), and music. I remember one group in particular that hit it big in '89, Edie Brickell & the New Bohemians, who went for a Carole King-like sound.
Also early '90s.
This is one of those songs that you only realize is a masterpiece years later.
You’re right, Lex. We were young, idealistic, many thought that the music of the time would lead forward into a peaceful world.
Amazing song, definitely my favorite by them,so Good👍 I always considered this a small musical masterpiece.
Such an AMAZING band! They evolved into so many layers of lyrics, sounds and melodies. Constantly creative.
Definitely an homage to the psychedelic Beatles' phase. The graphics remind one of 'The Yellow Submarine.' I thought I caught a Blue Meanie in there somewhere. The optimism Lex transposed from another Era resulted in the golden age of Rock that were the 70's... not the 90's. Still, perceptive as hell. Lex seldom disappoints.
I have seen them twice live in KC in a small venue during the past 10 years. They have talent to boot. So good!
Happy to see this one won a poll!
I have several songs in the "Will never get tired of" category and this is one of them. It is so rich musically and lyrically and the vibe is just out of this world. One of those songs that can make the worst day better.
One of the most underrated bands of all time. Super popular but could/should have been even bigger than they were. Still listen to The Hurting album regularly. A masterpiece from start to finish as far as I’m concerned.
Lex is right the late 90’s into the 2000’s was the end of good music
A very Beatles - esque song from Tears For Fears. I think Prince had a simular Beatles like flavor in his songs Raspberry Beret & Alphabet Street.
This song is an adventure
As Paddy McAloon once sang (in Moondog), "But guys we should have guessed, that girls would say it best." Lex has the musical insight here!
Great song by an excellent 80s band.
Somebody already said it already, but... This song is so Beatle-esque and complex and satisfying it makes me feel even more wonderful than I thought I could possibly feel about a song. Sometimes I simply sit back and marvel at how a tiny island nation like England can produce so many genius songwriters/performers. England makes my much more densely populated hometowns of Seattle and New York seem musically retarded at times. If that makes any sense.
I've suddenly decided that I don't make any sense, but still...
They may have lost the Revolutionary War, but the UK managed to invade and conquer the USA anyway. Bravo.
In recent times I've come to realize how very many damn good English/U.K. bands there were, particularly out of the "Second British Invasion" period of 80s New Wave. But even before that, of course. I'm going to have to give the award for # 1 Country with the Best Bands to them.
Great comment.
@@nancysmith8626 Great comment.
Love this song, with all its trumpets and elevated sounds of higher feelings and all the barroque stuff
Heard awhile ago remembered the visuals are phenomenal. The song/video won several MTV awards.thumbs up.
The 80s hadbest songs. Thumbs up.
Tears For Fears could be Beatlesque. This is a great example. It's very 1967 but with 80s/90s production values and the typical Tears For Fears musical sensibilities and ambitions.
I'm surprised you didn't pick up The Beatles' influence (unless you aren't that familiar with The Beatles). Tears for Fears are fantastic, one of the best bands ever, and still turning out great music today. Have you heard Woman in Chains from the same album yet? One of the most jaw dropping songs ever. Their next album, after this one, was Elemental, just amazing. Check out the title cut Elemental, Break It Down Again, Mr. Pessimist, and my favorite Goodnight Song. The next album after Elemental, Raoul and the Kings of Spain is breathtaking. Lush, dense, and very underrated, again the title cut is incredible, Secrets, and God's Mistake all are very good. This is a band whose talent, production and engineering rivals Steely Dan and are definitely worth diving into. Great reaction!
Music may have gone off a cliff in the US but the 90s was undeniably great for British music.
I love it. brad was bopping and swaying back and forth. Normally he’s so solid
, no movement. Ha ha. So cool to get your reaction to this. Your opinions and thoughts are super refreshing. Love watching you two!!
Check out when they sang live on Arsenio Hall show 1989. Top performance.
They grew up around the war torn violence of Ireland. Their music means more than we think
Music like this in the 80s led to the independent and underground bands that evolved into the genres of the 90s.
To some large extent those genres were a continuing development of 60s - 80s pop music, pushed underground by Rap, Dance and other "new" kinds of music coming to predominate the music charts.
Yes, this is totally a gateway song from the 80's to the 90's. LOVE IT
Brad & Lex, you'll love their "Pale Shelter" and "Change"!!
Both very good songs, from the Hurting album, the first and only album I owned of theirs, as a pre-teen, on vinyl.
This was their homage to the Beatles' I am the Walrus. Oasis did their homage with All around the world
Now that Brad has opened up he is hilarious
Lex is enthralled, Brad looks on in suspicion! Lol!
You guys should react to more Tears for Fears…
"Woman in Chains", "Mothers Talk", "Advice for the Young at Heart", "Change", "Memories Fade", "Pale Shelter", "Lord of Karma", "Always in the Past"
🎸🤘
pale shelter is my favorite song by them!
@@nicolasarbogast2739 My favourite track on the album.
Love the lyrics kick out the Style bring back the Jam. Obviously they preferred Paul Weller in the Jam than in the The Style Council (huge band in the UK early 80’s who disbanded at the height of their popularity when Paul left to form The Style Counsel.). Should check them both out. Very 80’s UK politics music.
On the face it yeah they sounded political but Weller always managed to mine an emotional depth, too. He has continued to make great pop to this day.
It's a call to bands to be radical again, to speak truth to power. The power is the politician granny with her high ideals (Thatcher). It's also a nod to MC5.
Yeah it's kind of cool though '80s version of psychedelia their concept of it it's pretty pretty good
Haven't heard this in a looong time! Shout and Everybody Wants To Rule The World were *The 80s!*
*This song IS a 90s sound that did NOT go off a cliff. This sound was streamlined and became Britpop. A less layered 60s British sound.*
See Oasis, Blur, Radiohead.
Lex’s speech about this song is pretty brilliant. I’ve never seen a young person articulate it so well, as she did about what this song would make you hope for about future music, but instead it ‘went down a cliff’. Oh!! That was funny. And pretty accurate. And it’s true, you can still find popular great music in the 90’s and beyond, but something definitely took a shift in the 80’s. And not for the good. Music got cheaper. Corner’s we’re cut for money and popularity. Art got commercial. But, though I say that, I could list lots of songs and artists since the 70’s that are great. But as a whole, something took a dive. Music got designed too much for clubbing (‘70’s disco started that - not that all of it is bad - but there much more bad disco than good) or, it got too shock for shock’s sake. Or angry for anger’s sake. Like with grunge and rap. Something got sacrificed, music-wise. It’s great when anger and depression and ‘stick it to the man’ can motivate music or a song, but always make sure the music or the song doesn’t suffer and take second place to your statement. Otherwise why do it in a song, just hold up a sign. Something happened though and it’s not easy to explain. It’s a topic that many people can get very opinionated with, including me. But something fell in quality. Some sort of uniqueness and creativity got lost. But that may only be in mainstream music; popular, on the radio and TV music, because if the mostly unknown great music out there, got the exposure it should, we’d be saying a different tune about modern music. What gets the airplay is really no reflection of the quality that exists if you look for it, because there is music happening now that is at least as good as the greatest music there has always been. Music that puts today’s popular music to absolute shame.
Dancing is fine, its fun. Had no issues with disco. Lot of rap is also fun (mostly the older ones). I wouldn't shoot down the whole genre.
I pretty much agree about what you've stated about grunge, though. It's mainly emo/depressing music and style.
Greetings from Germany I love this song along with laid so low and break it down my favorite songs from tears for fears.
Also from Tears: Shout, Everybody Wants to Rule the World.
Spandau Ballet - True
Thompson Twins: Hold Me Now, Doctor Doctor
Flock of Seagulls: Space Age Love Song, I Ran

This sounds EXACTLY like a Beatles song from the late 1960's. Funny it was compared to Oasis, since Oasis' sound was always compared to the Beatles, too.
“We’re bigger that the Beatles.”
“No Noel, no you are not.”
But yeah.
Great band👏 sowing the seeds of love 💞💞💞 sowing the seeds ✨✨🔥 everyone 🎺 the seeds of love 💞💞👏🔥 love power 💖💖💖❤️
At 4:04, it sounds like the drummer had been told "just give us Ringo"
Tears for Fears 🥰🥰🥰❤️ one of my favorite 80s pop groups. Always had a good message.
Simply Brilliant ! But Brad, it was music like this that meant that i did not need substances to get high. Just a turntable an amp and some speakers.
This song is soaked in mid-late 60's Beatles influence.
The song is supposed to be kind of a tribute to Beatles psychedelic era of music (Strawberry fields ,Lucy in the sky ,All you Need is love etc. ) Which they are very big fans of ,but of course putting there own late 80s spin on it . About everyone coming together with L🌻VE
Both incredible singers!
Politician Granny with the High Ideals...I believe is a reference to Margret Thatcher who was in power at the time.
My favourite lyric is "Kick out The Style bring back The Jam" - a reference to Paul Weller's 80s outfit The Style Council, a funk/soul band that were never as well received as his earlier, punkier, angrier group The Jam. Incredible, complex and powerful song.
I got see them in concert in May 2022. The first time I saw them in concert was in the 80s they sound exactly the same from there album.... They are sooooo damn good live, you have to see them live before they retire..
This is a great pop song from a great band. Their song Shout from 1984 ... Is more new wave but superb. Just gave me goosebumps when I heard this as a child in the 80s. A killer song. And my fav.
Not long out of high school when this song was released, and being a partaker of mind-altering substances, I would never think of this song as something I'd listen to on purpose while getting high.
Hippy Dippy Trippy sonic excellence! Also with important messages with fantastic visuals too! I will always love this!
You nailed the time period. It was a hit just as we were going from 89 into the 90s
The only word that's required is masterpiece.
One of my favorite songs by TFF. Basically, this is about the “flower power” movement and take action. Open your mind and it’s got the 60s vibe with some obscure Beatlesque rhythms and echos of I Am the Walrus. That’s my interpretation.
It’s actually about being anti Tory anti thatcher
Very Beatles!!!yeah yeah yeah🎸
Phil Spector may have invented the "Wall of Sound" - but in this incredible song, Tears for Fears added a pagoda roof, mirrored ceiling, shag carpeted walls and trippy inlayed parquet floors to it. Plus a gazebo hot tub. It's like they literally took a sonic trip through the entire history of music.
One of the few bands Ill jam too when Im not jamming out too Extreme Metal and Grindcore..
"..and then."
Yeah... that's so damn true.
Already by the late 1980s a lot of "Bleak" music had come into the mainstream, Emo stuff with a general "What's the point" message - but of course that intensified a lot during the 1990s and there were (and still are) threads of music that reek of a loss of all hope. I personally always read this song as a "hippie rage" song, From the first lines:
High time we made a stand
shook up the views of the common man
These were British guys living in Margaret Thtacher's "Money before people" Britain and raging against that. I take it to be someone saying "Hey! Wake up everyone, let's get more assertive in making those 1960s and 1970s love-your-fellow-man-spread-love-and-peace dreams come true". Musically, yes it borrows a lot from the Beatles, but lyrically I think it holds its own ground. The video was ground breaking at the time too - to have all those effects and artworks on a pop video in 1989 was something relatively new.
Perfect synopsis of this song!
Great song from 1989. Good call Brad!
This song is “I am the walrus” by the Beatles, but in 90s mood
Comes from an album everyone should have.
Love this song, love this channel 😁👍👏🏻👏🏻🇬🇧😍😍
This song is an absolute Masterpiece.
What the Beatles would have sounded like in 1989.
Their artpop could mean anything.
I love how deliberately sappy and saccharine the chorus is
Lex is on to something. She makes a point "then over the cliff'. I can see it. Thanks Lex !
