      The line, "The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had" suggests thoughts of suicide, but according to Roland Orzabal, who wrote the lyrics, it relates to the psychologist Arthur Janov's idea that our most dramatic dreams release the most tension.

      Yes. The mad world is causing these bad dreams. That's not my fault: I reject the mad (as in MAD - this was 1982, remember) world. It's internalised childhood terror of nuclear annihilation. They got it before anyone else did - but WE (i.e.: English 11-years old boys at the time) - grasped the mood and meaning entirely. Still do ;)

    Lex nailed it. The sentiment at the time was at what price do you value your soul? Most of us who were there during the 'Yuppie' Reagan years know all about the ultimate cost of the pursuit of extravagance. She is slowly acclimating to the times solely through her listening experience. That is extraordinary! How she does it I'll never know.

    • @chrisharris7931
      @chrisharris7931 2 года назад +1

      You make the Reagan era sound depressing. It was a great time to be alive. Most of the Yuppies were former Hippies. Funny how that works out.

      @@chrisharris7931 Had the best time of my life. But you have to admit that it was a decade of extravagance. How many Wall Street movies have they made already? All taking place in the 80's. I wasn't complaining then and am not now. Just pointing out that Lex saw the point of the song immediately.

    • @bernman23
      @bernman23 2 года назад +1

      @@chrisharris7931 It's short-sighted. It's like romanticizing the Roaring 20's. There's a long-term cost. Great depression, recession, etc. Boom-bust cycle. We're in 1 now. It was hastened by the pandemic, but exacerbated by prior economic policy & continuation. And there's an additional point that, beyond survival or at least comfort, the pursuit of material is shallow. That's where Lex here shows her wisdom. She dances w/ Roland, while Brad fantasizes about Lambos. lol

    new wave not new age. probably this song represents the height of that trend in the 80's. Bands like Tears for Fears, The FIXX, Bronskie Beat, Eurythmics, Flock of Seagulls, Siouxsee & the Banshees, New Order and many other bands of that time have an Avante Garde sentiment and just plain coolness that New Wave music represented.

      I like the dichotomy of the poppy music and the sad and dark lyrics. When this song is done as a ballad it takes away from the pure strength of it. It’s pretending everything is ok when inside it’s not. Or, I’m an idiot.

    • @leroyrs
      @leroyrs 2 года назад +11

      @@Theutus2 It's not about Donnie Darko. Gary Jules made this version especially for that movie. You may prefer that but the original had a different goal. "It's a bizarre viewpoint to watch people go about their daily routine, having to work for a living when you're sitting in a flat, unemployed," In a 2013 interview with The Guardian, Orzabal said of the timeless nature of the song: "'Mad World' hasn't dated because it's expressive of a period I call the teenage menopause, where your hormones are going crazy as you're leaving childhood. Your fingers are on the cliff and you're about to drop off, but somehow you cling on."

    This was nice, the message was there is basically a fabulously catchy pop song with superb arrangements, both message and arragements notd by Lex ... Brad on this occasion behind the curve essentially on message and that can be hard when you get the world a certain way ... the post song conversation was nice, philosphical ... soul vs materialism and if you / we dig deeper these two notions of human behavior/politically dont always have to be in opposition , but in cultural shorthand they often are suggested that way. Nice guys , sometimes i approve sometimes i dont, but that is my thing, keep on doing what you enjoy, a solid from the north of England
