Thank god for this video, this man is giving you what has taken me 2 years to gather in information and knowledge in just minutes.
Billy Purdy Absolutely Correct! The guy obviously loves and knows Subaru's at expert level. I'm engineer and IT degrees; became best at areas I loved!
No kidding
We’re are you guys located at and we’re can I contact for a future build by you ! Thanks for all the great advices in this video. Lots Knowledge🙏🏻
All motors are the same. They each have their own unique flaws but the Subaru motor in 4 cylinder form is actually really strong comparatively. It makes serious torque, and if not tuned for it will break the stock parts
I love hearing from people who actually do everything we spend hours researching to try to figure out what we should do. They know, you listen. Awesome video.
Cameron Lancaster yeah I learned something and I love that
"you know" :)
I prefer to believe youtube people
I'm glad my dad give me a Phillips screwdriver when I was 5 and him and my mom woke up and the bottom 2 door hindges and all the car headlights where out of the cars lol thats all I could reach
A true engine builder, with true knowledge, thank you so much for sharing this! Vince could easily charge a small fortune for this information but shares it for free, the Subie community is blessed!
i actually didn't even notice what everyone was talking about. I was listening to all the priceless/amazing information he was telling us`
Trunksu RIGHT!!!! Dude seems so normal and this video is great
As a Subaru enthusiast and after breaking a lot of engines and learning the hard way, I can say this guy know his stuff. A little addition to his comments, always upgrade the oil pump too, to 11mm or 12mm if is possible. Very nice video!
efrain kennedy the newer STi's bring 11mm pumps from the factory. However if I could go back I would definitely add a few things and not say "ya know" as much.. lol
Vincent Griffin Awesome man... I really didn't even notice the "you know" thing... Because I just wanted to hear and learn your facts! Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Vincent Griffin I didn't notice until I read the comments. Didn't bother me I was so absorbed my wife got mad. I love subies.
I tried to build my own EJ205.... I made a mistake and choose a turbo that was too big. The turbo lag is way much for my application (time attack). Thanks for your advice, I wished I saw this video earlier. Building engines is fun!
efrain kennedy - DRY-SUMP ! ! ! stop wasting money/time . . .
I watched this video a few years ago, made mental notes and now my 05 sti that I've had since 2010 has a fully built iAG closed deck short block with built heads fuel system and a cobb access port, capable of 750 tuned for just over 500 at the wheel. Completely reliable daily driver that I love to drive, this content had a huge hand in that so, thank you! Almost forgot about the hypermax HKS coil overs and t-sloted rotors so I can stop quickly.
SOLID content, CLEARLY knowledgeable, and NOT obnoxious. Thank you, I learned a lot.
Was coming here to see a 1000HP sti, was not disappointed with this at all. Awesome video, a lot of people don't realize what it takes to make that kind of power. They just think you bolt some stuff on your car and go. It would be cool if you guys made a video actually assembling the block as well as the turbo/piping/fuel system etc.
Ive learned so much from this video. I would pay this guy money to help me plan out my build any day of the week.
You know
God that guy is killing me with the"You know"
was just going to comment this.. only 9 minutes in lolol
lol that's hilarious. I didn't even notice it till you pointed it out. Now that's all i can hear.
I know, I know.. .. .. .. ow 😂
Kinda sort of. Yeah. You know.
I believe ignorant drivers are the #1 reason Subarus break 😕
Cirilo Ocon Don't break if you know how maintain them correctly for your usage & application
My gaskets havent been replaced since 2010 in my 2004 impreza lel
Or maybe because the EJ25 is a weak motor in Stock form... seems like subaru is pushing the little stock turbo and fuel system from factory... That's pretty wild that the factory tune is unable to add enough fuel to compensate for an aftermarket intake...
2 exhaust valves dropped at 100K on 100% stock car ($4500 to repair at dealer).
Cirilo Ocon truth!
My problem with Subaru tuners is finding frendly tuner dudes who don't make you feel like your walking on egg shells asking questions or lying to pad their pockets (13 year ASE mechanic, I know when you bs me!).
I've been building and tuning cars for a long time (it's my job) and never had to deal with such rude people when asking about limits & whatnot's for need be's.. I might be new to Subaru turbo tuning but come on..
It's the mean dyno shop people who make me want to excell in Subaru peformance so that kind people get fixed up right, never brushed off for wanting to understand something.
This dude seems nice, like takes B12 vitamins, chillen in the A/C out of derect sunlight kind of nice. I'd give him my money for that alone. Folks like him seem far n few and that needs to change, I'm sure it won't be long.
I was just fascinated with all the knowledge he was dropping, then I scroll down after the vid and see 50, 000 you know memes. Pay attention you might learn something.

Zack Mabry this comment actually made me lol
underrated comment
Busy 2jz swap my Sti hatch , but with my Process west intake on my coffee table I do miss ej 😅 till it breaks again 🤬
Great info, so glad you made this video. A lot of the stuff you mentioned carries over to any 4cyl build trying to go 500whp n up. Thanks for sharing.
"You know"
Thanks for the great insights. There are many comments which are useful to consider when upgrading not just a Subaru engine, but petrol engines regardless of make. Thumbs up!
well damn, dude knows his trade.
ya know
Daniel Summerill I don't know, but you know he knows
I've been working on ej most my life and I love them
More of this, real tech, no bull.
please do this with other engines
Like some good ones maybe

Liam S: Jafromobile would be the men for that
Turn up the god damn brightness
Uhhh he's a subie guy and there's only one real platform so which other engines ?
🔹 Great video guys, so much good advice packed into one video - LOVE it! You guys are building some awesome engines and putting down some LEGIT numbers!
Your shop has clearly spent some serious time committed to developing this platform and raising the bar for the entire Subaru community - THANK YOU!
He's back at rallispec now. Prime has become a place for high dollar builds only. Underdogs not welcome with less than 10k to spend , dont get me wrong they do know their stuff and are running a business so they need to make money. Went there once and that's the vibe i got.
Just got off the phone with these guys. I'm giving it an ample 6 months before I'm finally ready for this build. Thank you for your time, guys.
All y'all commenting about "Ya know" let's see you build a 1000HP car, letalone a Subie, hell I bet alot of you don't even have a cool car.
Let alone a good percentage probably dont even know how to change a tire.
you say that like....you know....like you know!
Problem with this build is it's nowhere to be found.....aka it has blown up, and he doesnt want anyone to know....
Love this video thanks Vince
Sebastian Reyes thanks for the kind words man 👍🏼
Great vid. I work on EJ's everyday and this guy knows what he's talking about. Thanks for the upload
Great video vince. I picked up my 11' Wrx a few months ago and im still learning a lot, this video had a lot of great info.
Dude, they're totally reliable if you just, you know, change everything...
The reason big power OEM cars last is because they come from the factory with these parts....but you're also paying $60-120grand. So yeah, upgrade everything to make that 450hp at 28psi last...this isn't shocking news.
If you don't overdo it with the tune will factory parts this car will last you 4ever. It's a budget sportscar, what do you fuckers expect?
@@shitilearnedonyoutub it's a rally car it's not meant to have tons of power

that wasn't a 22b, it was a Type R Version V
Keep doing more video, man. The more you do, the better you will be in front of camera.
Best wishes to you sir.
some of this knowledge is over my head but I still appreciate the fact that you took your time to share it candidly so kudos to you. Even if 90% smack-talk, no one will remember their words but the 10% who influenced and inspired by your video will probably never forget you and your words.
Digging the ChiTown Subies decal at 7:54! Good stuff man, keep it up.
I am just about to do a build and needed this bad, lol. Thank you for the info Vincent Griffin!
I didn't know, but after exactly 140 'you know's, I finally know.
Haha na loved it, dude knows his shit. I actually counted though.
Did you count the you knows because you don't understand anything he said? He knows his stuff. You should listen, you might learn something.
Carlos bro Your comment unfortunately is not valid as you still took time to count how many times he was saying a nervous "you know"...
You have to learn how to laugh at yourself sometimes lads. This dude knows a shit ton and mad respect!
OK, I apologise. Didn't mean for the disrespect.
Carlos bro I was looking for a count, I'm glad I'm not the only one who was wondering
This guy keep saying "You know" but no ! We don't know and that's why we are here ! This video is a must seen if you plan to have a Subaru or having one, just thank you !
So glad I found this site! Owned six different Subaru's since 1999 and Love their engineering and desire for excellence. While other manufacturers make dozens of engine designs Subaru takes one and keeps making it better!
Came here for Subaru content but wasn't expecting those R33's!

Iv personally know Vince for many years and even sold my old wrx to him. He's a great guy and awesome builder. If I ever have any question I go right to him. He has his hands in so many subaru projects and events. If you're looking for an engine builder around New Jersey I would highly recommend!
Here's his instgram info. @vincebuilt and @primemotoring
This guy's knowledge and ability to articulate points make this a pleasure to watch. Love to have a video of him talking us through an engine build, or speccing process.
Solid advice man. I've been a Subaru tech for 8 years oem and aftermarket and you are 100% correct. Racing isn't cheap, and builds don't last forever
Watching this video brings me back to when I built my ej257 for my bugeye, good times and still running strong👍
So let me ask you. How many of you say "um" or "uh" in a tense situation when you're trying to think of the right words to say? Exactly, unless you're a public speaker or something I bet you all do and don't even notice it. Leave the guy alone because nobody is perfect. Great video Vince and Drive crew.
It's amazing to see people like this who genuinely know their stuff talk about it.
Loved your video Vincent Griffin! Awesome for you to share your knowledge. Everything you said was dead on with how a EJ motor should be handled, built, maintained. Thanks man.

I love what you do, but man I've got to tell you, they actually make hats (caps) that will fit.
Amazing to have the opportunity to listen to a guy who knows the platform in and out just talk about it for 20min. Solid video seriously thanks
Not a Subie guy but enjoyed this. Don't worry about the criticism. You're a clear communicator and it's good of you to share your expertise.
Where this shop at so i can take my wrx to worked on?

A tuning shop is not a tuning shop unless you have Skylines lying around!!! Shop approved!

Agent Smith rb26 that is
That was the best and most honest small engine/big power description of what to expect. If it's driven reasonable with a blast ever now and then vs. constant abuse. People need to be honest with themselves is what he's saying.
Great video, you guys should make more like this on different platforms... is always great to hear people who have loads of experience share what they've learnt over the years
Loved this, thank you for doing this Vincent.
That's crazy!!! He went from 0 to 149 "You know" under 20 minutes!!
I've actually met this man because prime motoring used to be in my town before they relocated a couple towns away. Still only ten minutes away. Anyway him and all the other people working there are real stand up guys and their knowledge of Japanese cars is the most extensive I've ever seen in person.
This guy knows his damn stuff. if you are here to learn - you wont have a problem with his presenting. I think he is perfectly fine in this video.
I love these types of videos!
Thanks for sharing your expert knowledge Vince. I found it all very interesting. Cheers from Australia 🍻
I just got my first subaru. 2020 sti. I love the car and plan on building once my warranty is up. I've learned alot in a short amount of time from guys like this. Awesome video!
so is not fast enough?
Rallispec people are freaking wizards and get my respect no question. I worked over my 4G63 with Andy C who was Dave A's partner way back for club rally and these guys are no joke. They actually had to change the rules to slow Dave's suby engines in international top level sports car racing. His road racing car won everything when the driver from Phoenix in PA was in the picture a few yrs ago. THen this shop was Subaru factory racing team international engine builder. I never met Vince but as an alumnus there's no doubt he's on point.
Fantastic video, thanks for sharing all your experience Vince. New to the STI world, so I definitely learned a lot.
Highly informative, what an awesome video. Thank you for the knowledge.
99% of EJ's will never see 500hp without a lot of effort, but still i love my Subaru.

Man there should be one of these for 1JZ and 2JZ
FNM Sam The 2jz , 4g63, and the srt4 engine are examples of what Subaru should of done 12 years ago... Pretty disappointing that a simple bolt on/tune setup is pushing the limits of the stock STi bottom end...While srt4 and Evo engines are reliably handling 400+whp big turbo setups.
That was the most educational 20 minutes I've spent on the subject of how to approach tuning my car.
Thank you very much.
a little late, but yeah.... I really appreciated this type of insight- A guy who knows what he's talking about and giving it to us straight. thanks.
Great vid. I follow Vince on Instagram. Good stuff. I wish we could have seen your opinion on EL and UEL headers. Still, great material and thanks for making the video.
Brandenburg008 equal length always better. Never could understand why the Subaru crowd is the only crowd who can't understand this.
From what I've seen on the forums, people get it, but the sound is more important to some people than the extra hp.
I think a lot of Subaru owners put faith in the countless hours of R&D that went into designing and making the factory setup, which obviously include the UEL. At least, that would be my guess. Again, I wish I would have seen Vince's opinion on it. EL makes complete sense for performance, just curious to hear his opinion.
when you're racing or using your car for a specific application, obviously you want performance (EL). But, I wouldn't trade the massive smile that my car gives me every morning for anything. So if it's a daily I usually say keep the UEL, keep the character.
Anyone here else cringe a little when he used the cordless impact gun to start the water pump bolt? I'd always prefer to start it off by hand. Also helps to line it up using two screwdrivers to help align the pump and gasket to the block.
LOL, good call on knowing if they can drive it. I've driven a 500hp STi and it scared the shit out of me, it pulled like a beast and I wasn't ready for it to drive me. hahahaha.
A failure in the pickup tube can be avoided by putting bigger bolts in because I have had them under high load strip out, break, or fall out all together. Even a stock oil pick up with better bolts and o ring is better than stock and holds up to realistic street power. But in the long run I built my own oil pickup tube, it’s basically the same as killer b, yes I copied it but I don’t sell them for a living I built one and use it myself, I don’t think it’s the fixer of all but it’s a piece of the puzzle, to make your subie reliable and drivable at say 400 hp on the street is all you need honestly. It’s a gymkhana car at that point, but you can beat on it regularly and it takes it. But at 600 hp your close to every limit of the motor and tune become so critical that it’s so hard to street drive and be reliable, so choose your battle. Build a 600 hp capable motor and turn it down to 400 and beat on it.
Im hoping Vincent will see this but what is your theory in breaking in a built motor? I have heard many different methods and ways with both good and bad results. Mine was broken in the 50 miles break in oil, then change with break in oil again for 300 miles then regular oil. I've heard some beat the shit out of it as its suppose to break in seals, others just let it idle forever and let it break in slowly, I've heard many things. what do you do?
gavin P do the oil brake in but don't Don't beat the shit out of it. You can beat the shit out of it after you brake it in. Go 3000 miles brake in first 50 miles oil change than 500 miles and then to 3000 miles another one and after then beat the shit out of it. That's the whole reason of braking the engine internal mold with each other and then u can hit it hard
"Looking to make power... on a budget... on an EJ" lol budget??? Don't think so lol
So much good info here. I've watched it about 5 times now. Watch it again after a couple months.
This was an incredibly informative video. Thank you Vince and since your local I’ll definitely look into coming to see your guys in person.
He's back at rallispec now building engines there, i finished a motor with one of his bottom ends not too long ago
Great video👍👍👍
Cool video made me appreciate the EJ more. One question that should of been asked is how much power can the stock block handle?
2strokeFORever From the video I would assume that was his point in saying people start having issues around the 550 hp mark and that's when they would sleeve or run closed deck blocks.
The block is fine its the cast pistons that are the problem, i woudnt recommend going over 380hp on it.
watched this some months ago. I've taken on rebuilding my jdm ej207 before swapping it. coming back to this video again I understand so much more. KNOWLEDGE
yeah i'm a few years late to seeing this, but holy cow i learned so much about ej's 20 minutes.

I didn't notice it at first, you know, but once I did, you know, I could not unnotice it even if I tried you know...
haha @ 5:55 common question asked to someone trying to make quick power on Subarus. I am at 367whp(injector limited) and holy crap its fast. My setup is estimated to reach mid 400whp, and I am already pretty scared lol. Anything below 120mph it scoots pretty fast, I got some videos on low boost. Reaching 400whp on a WRX/STI is stupid quick. E85 makes torque come on so fast and hard. Great video, everytime I have a new subaru owner ask me for advice I pretty much tell them all of this. I spent a lot of time on NASIOC and getting the info can be a bit tedious.
EDIT: for the AOS, did you mean the 'STREET" AOS? there is 2 different kinds and people tend to get the one that doesnt run the hot water through it to eliminate condensation for daily driven E85 cars.
No. He meant the competition series because it eliminates the PCV entirely. Routes to atmosphere. Street series recirculates through the factory system.

You know… You know… You know… This guy has a phenomenal wealth of information but if he says you know one more time I hope that engine blows up next to him.
I had an 2004 wrx 2.0. Blew the engine at 64000 miles, Spun a bearing. I rebuilt it myself because I didn't want to pay the "stealer" to replace it with another problematic motor and I wanted the challenge. I bought a new crank from Subaru. The part number was different to the stock crank. The oiling holes were clocked differently. The old crank basically ran out of oil pressure at every 180 degree point. Look up the issue with Chevrolet after market forged cranks on the 327 57 Chevys. When you split the motor open you will also see that the oil feed holes to the crank were not drilled correctly from the factory. The oil feed holes are pin sized at the bottom of the cut. Basically you finish drilling the holes the factory diameter but you go deeper cutting out the pin hole on the bottom. You'll see what I mean when you pull the crank and look for it. I ditched the silly valve in the intake. JB welded the holes from the shaft and blended it with a die grinder. Port matched the exhaust manifold at the flange on every port. Hollowed the 3 cats and programmed the cat inefficiency code out. That and a fabricated down pipe from the stock flange to the 2nd cat's side increased boost 1.5 psi. I changed out the stock pump for a walbro. What I wish I had done was also upgrade the injectors but I wasn't sure I could get the computer programming right in a fast enough time frame. it was my only transportation at the time. I turned the boost up to 21 psi on a stock turbo. I added 3 degrees of timing and left the fat factory fuel map. That car was at 160000 miles with the stock turbo when I sold it. I use to have a problem with oil burning before I rebuilt the engine. A ball honing with a drill and new rings and I never burned oil again. I eventually sold the car because I was suspecting the 5 speed was going to let go. Especially after replacing the clutch with an aftermarket that didn't slip like the stock clutch. I could out run a stock sti and was beating stock M3's of the same year. I could never get around the newer bad boy M3's before I sold it. Surprised different modded cars that said they always beat wrx's. ....now playing with an ls motor with a single turbo. Much cheaper and reliable. Oh yea . Another reason I sold it was because no one was sharing any secrets about the wrx. The tuners would not breathe a word. Basically drop it off , leave a check and we will mod and tune it. Very stingy with the knowledge. Kinda the same crap this dude is selling. Leave it and a credit card with us and we will fix it. No thanks!!!
great informative vid.
Basically, you know, EJ25 is, you know, badass. 💯 video.
Vince, Demetri, JR, Adam, Nev and the guys at Prime Motoring are fantastic. Down to earth people that care about their customers. If you're ever in the East Rutherford area, check them out sometime. You won't be disappointed.
This is awesome these guys really give strong advice about Subaru’s and how to either have a fun daily or a fast build the right way thank you and keep up the good work!!!
I'm never gonna hear "you know "the same way again....

People making theses meme’s of “you know” probably blew their subarus to hell. Hey Vince, thank you for the knowledge bro like myself and many others we are listening and thank your for your time, knowledge and effort to make this video for subie owners like myself to watch and learn. I would go with a reinforced block when you’re 350hp and above. Not sure if the stock block could handle the power and pressure over time especially if you went with a bigger turbo set up. Anyone who knows correct me if I’m wrong? Also that is when the ringland failures start to occur around that power range. Thanks again man!
The only other guy I know and trust out there building high HP Subaru engines so consistently is Benjamin Murray @ Street Car Factory in Arizona. Great video from Vince, the information is plentiful!
This video came in at a good time. I've been researching for months trying to build my ej22t properly, and this gave me a lot of good insight. Thank you /Drive and Vince
Ej22t the godly engine ❤

As someone who just joined the Subaru club and motor wrenching in general club, this has lots of good information in it for a new guy like myself. Would love to sit down with a guy like Vince and see what else makes his mind tick.
Thanks for being so candid and putting it out there. Learned a lot of vital information. Big share.
