Subaru R-STi - JDM vs USDM: A Friendly Rivalry -- /TUNED

  • In the US, we never got the best Subaru of them all, the first generation WRX coupe, getting stuck with the fun-but-not-fast 2.5RS version. One of the more popular upgrades for those cars is the "R-STi" drivetrain swap. In the season premiere of Tuned, we look at two approaches: the USDM drivetrain swap, and the JDM drivetrain swap. Which is better? You decide.

    The owner of the grey RS knows what he's doing, his car is built with a direct performance-oriented goal. That hipster owner of the blue stance/scrape nation RS shows a prime example of form > function...which irritates me how the cars are built today.

    • @Thr33.Sid3z
      @Thr33.Sid3z 9 лет назад +8

      There wasnt anything wrong with his car...smh its about money, and he chose to put his money into a usdm ej257 engine, which is 2-3x more than the ej20k, and just hadn't gotten to the suspension/brake stage of the build. I think he actually did end up doing coilovers and whatnot but if i recall right, he sold the blue one. I just happen to come accross both of them on IG a few weeks ago.

    • @octurbojoe
      @octurbojoe 9 лет назад +6

      NePdXploit Scrapes, stance nation, wheel fitment, stretched tires, and rolled fenders is a lot wrong...to me...they are the skinny jeans of performance cars. This is what I was trying to get across. But now if you're talking how money could have been spent on this build, that expensive CF hood, scoop, and lip could have been traded for suspension to keep him from rubbing, or brakes to safely slow the swapped car down, but at the time of filming, it was mostly a "show car" @ 1:21. Don't get me wrong, I love GC's. I've had 3 of them out of 7 Subarus I've owned in the last 16 years. I just really don't care for the blue one in this vid. Totally a subjective opinion. If you're offended, I apologize.

    I'm not going to say it was THE best design period in automotive history, but 1999 was definitely a good year for sporty coupes and sedans. Clean simple contours almost across the board, on lightweight, small-ish sports coupes and sedans. GC WRX/STI, Evo VI, FC RX-7, Mk. IV Supra, W20 MR-2, S205 GT-Four, B5 S4/RS4, Mk4 R32, E36 M3, E39 M5, R34 Skyline, S15 Silvia, Z32 300ZX, Galant VR-4, GTO MR/3000GT VR-4, AP1 S2000, etc. Now what do we have? No more RX-7, no more Supra, no more GT-Four, no more MR-2, no more VR-4's, etc. No more sexy WRC cars like the 22B. Everything keeps getting bigger and lumpier and heavier and (most of the time) uglier - weird angles festooned with LEDs. Don't get me wrong, there are some sexy cars out there today, but it's not like the old days.

To be honest I was inspired by this video as well as folks that I have met talking about the Subaru life. I knew very little about Subarus when I started, and now I know a lot more then when I first started. GC8 body is indeed the holy grail of Subaru chassis, and I would have any other body style if I was going to go all out into the import scene again. Swapped with EJ207 v7 courtesy of lots of swearing with broken bolts due to our New England weathered cars. Ultimate sleeper mode with a refined style of import. Less flashy, no bling, all go!

    Matt you just need to find a friend at Subaru of America, they have a 22B in the country and they let journalists play with it from time to time, as far as I'm aware they store it at their HQ in Cherry Hill NJ

    Ya trying to get one of these cars is nearly impossible now. People are asking entirely too much for their run down pos's. You might as well get a regular STI and save the money you spend in labor and the swap. Kind of pisses me off because if you're selling the car evidently you don't give a shit about swapping the motor. Let it go for blue book at least for christ's sake.

      I've never owned a subbie. I want to and I'd like to see what all the buzz is on these rides. But with cars like the Pontiac GTO going for 15k with less than 100k on them and in pristine condition...it's really hard to justify the subbie. lol

      I actually recently bought a 1.8 sohc lt 96 impreza L awd for 2500 which isn't bad I plan to make it into a fun car their not as expensive as u might think and mine is in pretty good shape sure it has a run down drivers seat and the engine is 163xxx but man dude its worth the buy I'm soo happy with mine

    • @KyleSaucedo
      @KyleSaucedo 9 лет назад +4

      Yeah when I went to get an RS you couldn't find one for less than $7k. When you can find a WRX in same condition and faster with a turbo for the same price.

    I'd rather do a 240Z build. Flared arches, bigger brakes, RB swap or a Rebello 3.0. I have nothing against these builds but they look really dated, despite a lot of the aftermarket body parts. To me, the most successful aftermarket arches or scoops are the ones that look stock. These kinda look like they just came off the set of Fast and Furious.

    • @Wildchildinc
      @Wildchildinc 10 лет назад

      Id do the same thing. Naturally aspirated strokers on a Z are more than enough for the light car

    • @BrandoDrum
      @BrandoDrum 10 лет назад +1

      I think the 240z is more "dated" but in a better way. It's just a more classic, timeless and beautiful body style throwing back to the great British coupes of the 60's. The GC chassis impreza will always just be a rude Cliche of 90's rally madness. That's awesome and I love it but they aren't beautiful cars in the same way a 240z is.
      We can put it this way, you'll never see a GC Impreza restored and driven to casinos and nice restaurants and taken seriously when a man in a armani tux gets out. They will always (Because they kinda started) look like a bodykit on wheels and that's fine.
      A 240z though, if done clean friggin' James Bond might pull up in one at the most exclusive club in town. It's that pretty and that classy. It's just a more sophisticated and elegant car regardless of the performance capabilities.

      @bonvo86 10 лет назад

      as a datsun guy i see your point accept for one thing most of the body parts shown here are stock or based on stock the 2,5 rs had the big spoiler and scoops in the hood stock

    • @owenmusgjerd5952
      @owenmusgjerd5952 9 лет назад +4

      D. Zuks After motor, tranny, other miscellaneous parts, and fluids... plus labor it would be about 6-10k for a Clean Swap..

    • @absolutelysobeast
      @absolutelysobeast 3 года назад

      Absolutely its considered cheap. When matt farah is used to driving Porsches and ferraris and 60,000 dollar corvettes, yeah 10,000 is seriously cheap for what you will get. Better performance than an sti with the same engine and those cost 12 to 15 or more depending on mileage. Its all a matter of perspective.
