- In today's video I go into more detail about how I create backgrounds and the types of paper best suited for using Neocolor II's. I've had a few requests and questions on this topic, so I created a video that will hopefully be helpful!

Hi Folks! I just wanted to add a note to the part where I discussed Neo II's on Kerby Rosanes books...I think they work ok, you just have to add multiple layers and do a little more work, is all. 😉

I love this demo! I, too, am afraid of my Neo IIs. Do you always color background first? I think that’s one of the my struggles. I always just dive into the image first.
Most of the time I do the backgrounds first. But it’s definitely personal preference. One thing about doing the background first is if you need to iron the page, like if you are using watercolors and sometimes with Neo II’S, you might need to iron the page and it’s best to do that before you get the pencil work and all of the accent mediums laid down. 😊
If you are using two layers of ModPoge you won’t have any problems of using Neocolor II or any watercolor mediums! 😊

I learned so much from this tutorial. I just own a set of 10 neocolonr iis. I have struggled when trying to use them. Mostly I have tried to use them on Amazon paper. Yesterday I tried to do a background in a Lulu Mayo page. I realize now that the color was soaking into the page and the color would not move well. I have been debating buying a larger set of neolocolor iis, but have been afraid to do so. I now think it might be a good idea. I can always print a picture that is on a lesser quality paper onto a mixed media paper, a watercolor paper or a Bristol paper. Thank you so much for this thorough tutorial!😊

Oh my goodness, Jen! This tutorial is amazing! I love my neo ii's but have struggled with them a bit, and now I can't wait to try your techniques. I think I've been over-blending and also over-watering the page for sure. Oof! I appreciate you taking the time to make this video for us. 💖💖💖

Really good video! ❤❤ I love them for backgrounds. I’ve never tried clouds so appreciate your tutorial. I also really like how if you accidentally get color in a place you don’t want in a Hana Karlzon book you can lift up the color with the water brush. Versus the Kerby books where the color is soaking in more.

Oh wonderful, Kylie!! Don't be scared. You can always practice them a bit on a piece of card stock. They may not act the same as on the paper in an H.K. book, but at least you can get a better feel for them and become more familiar with them before going straight to a coloring page. Thank you so much for this video. It's very timely. I've started working on doing backgrounds with my Neo Color 2s. The first one I've done is in Midnight Masquerade by Hanna Karlson. I did the title page. I'm not sure what I've done wrong, but I'm going to keep going. Even if I have to color every title page and every nameplate page in all my Hanna Karlson and Marie Trolle Books. This is fantastic. Thank you for the detailed video. Part of my problem with these is coming up with color combinations. I would love to see someone do a series showing different color combos. Also, how do they work on Lulu Mayo books, or have you tried them?

I'd like to know about the paper in Melpomeni Chatzipanagiotou's books, Circle of Life, Enchanted Earth, or Nature Mandalas, have you used Neo IIs in any of those? TIA💕 I, too, would like to see you finish this page especially using your pencils for the fine-tuning part and coloring the kitties.

Thanks so much for this video. I just wanted to say that with my Hannah Karlzon Books and Kerby's Books I find the opposite happens. If I use wet mediums in Hannah's books it pills up the paper something dreadful and you can't rescue it with pencils at all and yet with Kerby's I can use any wet medium I want and it turns out perfect. I've also tried both methods of applying water and different sizes and makes of water brush and it still doesn't work in the Hannah Karlzon books. I am convinced it's the quality of the paper and has something to do with either the batch of books printed at the time or wherever country they are purchased from. Either way you do an awesome job with every video and page you produce. Tfs xo

Thanks for you video. Question: could you tell me what you put in the Pinterest search engine to find your reference picture for your background. Sometimes I have a hard time finding a reference picture for ideas.
Sure! Most of the time I will just type in Hannah Karlzon (or whatever the artists name is) and then the name of the book. So like for this one, I think I typed in Hannah Karlzon Seasons. Hope that helps! 😊

Can you tell me the sharpener you use for your neo’s? I’d like to use apply them directly to the page like you do but my tip is too blunt. Thank you for your great videos!

You can also dip a paintbrush in water and take color from the crayon to the brush and paint finer details.

Thank you, I needed this. However, in spite of buying a number of waterbrushes I have found them impossible to control. They seem to leak water even when I don’t add pressure whether they are cheap brands or expensive.
Glad to help! Maybe just use regular water color paint brushes in various sizes. You can use a cloth to dab off excess water as your water control. 😊
By far the best waterbrush I have ever used (and I have tried 90% of them) is the Derwent push button. They aren't cheap but have the best water control, and the small is just the right size to get into details.
What about the Klara Markova books
Oh yeah! I think they do well in those books, they have that really nice smooth paper. 😊🖍️
