You know a band is good when everyone has a completely different order of their favourite albums. I know people who think Blizzard beasts is their best album. I love pure holocaust and battles in the north, but at the heart of winter onwards is my favourite immortal sound.
Diabolical and pure Holocaust are the best. And that's final!
Pure holocaust is my happy place. I once had the opening riff from the eternity opens stuck in my head for three days. Great three days.

My favorites are "Pure holocaust" and "At the heart of winter", second favorites are the debut and "sons of northern darkness", but love them all except "Blizzard Beasts", which has a really bad, industrial sound.

I like this! Not fully my list, but I love putting Damned in Black that high; such an underrated album!
Love Immortal! First album I heard by them was Sons of Northern Darkness. They were on an old Metal Hammer magazine compilation album back in the day.

Blizzard Beasts is way way better than people give it credit for. Mountains of Might is top 3 Immortal songs.

Yea I know, I ranked Pure Holocaust last. Never loved that one as much as everyone else
So for the longest time I agreed with the opinion that Blizzard Beasts was their worst, because the production is indeed pretty shit and the whole thing is a bit of a blur. But here's the thing: it's still high-energy Immortal, and while it's not as good as other albums, it's still pretty cool. Which is more than I can say for some of their newer stuff...
1) Pure Holocaust - BM masterpiece
2) Sons of Northern Darkness - Epic AF
3) At the Heart of Winter - a classic
4) Damned in Black - criminally underrated.
5) Diabolical Fullmoon Mysticism - great BM, but not as good as on Pure.
6) Battles in the North - pretty cool mi-era
7) War Against All - a good return to form
8) Blizzard Beasts - pretty fun despite the weird sound.
9) All Shall Fall - a pretty bland reunion album, has a couple of highlights but eh.
10) Northern Chaos Gods - put me right to fucking sleep. This is like what an AI trying to sound like Immortal would probably put out.

I wasn't into metal when the second wave of Black Metal hit in the early 90's, so maybe I just don't get it, but the lo-fi production makes PH and BitN unlistenable to me. Maybe I'm just spoiled.

I’m glad you did this. My first introduction to the band was the Blizzard Beasts album. So it took me a while to give them another chance... the only other album I heard from them is At The Heart of Winter ... which I do like. So I’m intrigued enough to check them out more. Any suggestions on which album to check out next?
Sons of northern darkness has a similar sound imo to at the heart of winter so I’d go with that

Blizzard Beasts is definitely not their worst, it is one of a kind in the genre.
My top 1 would be either at the heart or pure holocaust... in so conflicted sometimes...

Immortal discography is flawless
All shall fall and Sons of Northern darkness, are good, But, they have a very mainstream sound, my favorite is at the heart of winter and pure Holocaust

Just curious, where would you put Abbath's solo debut in this mix? He and Demonaz have both stated that was basically the material for the next Immortal album before things got sour.

Sons of Northern Darkness is my number 1. My 2nd favourite black metal album. Only Mayhem's De Mysteriis beats it

Blizzard Beasts is fucking amazing
Immortal is one of the bands that you cant compare their albums as every album is different and special.Example Blizzard album is so diff of everything else fast heavy bass and technical !
At the Heart of Winter is awesome but it's more death metal than black metal. Still love it. The debut album is savage and the cover with breathing fire is perfect.
If anything it is more thrash. Then again, to me it's their best in their catalogue.

7) (don’t kill fucking kill me. the songwriting is great, but the performances are eh, and the mix sucks imo. the drums drown the guitars. all these songs sound leagues better live) pure holocaust
