I love your "steal like an artist" idea. I'm a mixed media artist and software designer and I can tell you everyone steals. Artists tend to take inspiration. Software designers under a deadline will heavily take from other designers. :)
I started pottery 19 years ago. I work in earthenware and commercial glazes. There was literally not a lot of information on commercial glazes. No RUclips. I spent so much time with trial and error. I also taught hand building in a community studio. It’s in my blood!
I love hearing you just chat while you're working, it's so relaxing. Don't stop being 'long winded'! Love from my home studio in the UK - you've given me so many tips and inspiration to set up my studio
I found your comments on living in Germany very interesting. I once was German :)Go ahead and start mixing your own glazes. It is like baking a cake! Easy peasy!!!!
I'm a returning potter after a forced career change in my early 40 s, I'm doing things now that people think are new but I did back then , long story short ? It's all been done before, not much , if anything is actually new, but it's never been done by you before and if you add your own personal touches, bam ! It's definitely not the same old thing! Go on, be inspired, but don't loose yourself with it, it's the you that makes it new ! 🎉
I loved watching the snow outside, I really miss it. Especially the smell right before. I grew up in Canada, but I'm now in San Antonio. So no snow. Its amazing where life takes you. Thank you for sharing your passion with us, and all of your hard work.
Clay is an amazing medium to work in. I started again in pottery after moving to my partners home that was almost 5yrs ago. Took classes in collage while studding photography in the dark room. I found a great community of potters in my new home town. Thank you for sharing your story and work with us out here.
I took my first pottery class in August. I had to find a local potter willing to teach because all the beginner classes were during the middle of the day when I was working. Now I'm trying to make this a thing and figure out how to turn it into a full time gig. My day job is soul sucking and this is the only real thing I have found that restores me. Thanks for your videos, I'm really glad to see different perspectives from many different potters. There are so many good teachers out there and I am thankful for all of you.
I went to college for ceramics and made all of the glazes and clay for the classes as a side job. It's really not that hard, but I can imagine it isn't very cost effective if you have a small studio with just you using it, it's just a lot of ingredients to ensure you have a variety of colors and styles.
I had noooo idea you were from Wisconsin and even lived in Madison for a bit! When I moved back to Madison after being in Chicago for a few years my reintroduction to the clay game was at Midwest Clay Project, it is so cool to know that you started there
I am inspired by other artists all the time. If they are teaching on you tube, then it is assumed that we as an audience will try to make the object. By the time I glaze my pieces and built them in a similar fashion, they usually look nothing like what the original did. I sell at a local shop and a lot of art fairs. Loved your series trying to make the great throw down pieces. Happy holidays, looking forward to your creativity in the new year!
I like either of the artist inspo ideas you gave. I definitely agree that as long as you are not selling the exact same thing, it’s fine. I put my own flare on some pottery inspo as well.
Merry Christmas. I'm loving your templates. I'm having so much fun and learning too. Can't wait to show you 'after' Christmas. So I don't ruin someone's surprises 😉
Im still looking for a studio, but have acces to a friends owen. Its really interesting to hear how potters started up. It s a long Journey before you call yourself a potter.
Merry Christmas Mia. Thanks for such a lovely warm video about your life as a potter. All your ideas for 2024 sound fabulous. I’m sure being inspired by the work of famous artists would lead to some really creative work and of course the practical idea of problem solving would be wonderful for us all. Looking forward to 2024!
Omg I lived in the city you moved to for several years! I won't say where in case you haven't made it public but I recognised it in the photos. Such a great little city. I've also spent quite a bit of time in Berlin and totally agree that people are friendlier in the south!
I love the idea of "great artists steal," because I've been learning how to make abstract art (painting) from basically copying artists I admire online. It's always different in the end, but I learn new techniques and concepts and things from everyone.
Hi Mia, Thanks for a really interesting video. I just make pottery through workshops because I enjoy it but love watching the Throwdown and found you through this shared interest. My last project was a little gingerbread house, much like yours although I cut out my door and windows before I assembled.
Thank you for sharing. I love your videos. I love your teapot template I used so far. I love your newsletter. You are the complete go-to package! Again, big thank you❤️, from Canada🇨🇦
Heeeey fellow Wisconsinite potter! o/ AND Madison and Midwest Clay Project! I was there for a bit over a year before moving to where I am with private space now. MCP was a great place to get my hands back in clay and sharpen up my skills! Loved everything about this video, ty for your work : 3
Thanks for sharing your story, and I hope your holidays are fabulous! I love the concept of taking inspirational works and building on them, making them your own. I don't look at it as stealing (provided one doesn't try to copy and take credit!) and think it is flattering that someone admires a piece so much that they use the concept in their own work. And I have really enjoyed your throw down segments as well.
My opinion on mixing your own glazes and the artistry thereof is that it’s just another tool for you to make YOUR work. Ultimately, I feel every artist wants a style, and making your own glaze can help with that, or not. Personally I love it, it makes me feel more involved and it’s so much cheaper. But painter’s don’t judge the paint the other use, so neither should potter’s if the piece is beautiful!
A Russian friend of mine once wondered about healthcare and that you don't get the money back you pay each month. I replied ' In Germany you can be poor but you can't be poor and dead like in the US'. Oversimplified but like you said 'normal ass life' from my point of view.
Sorry Pottery Girl, not everybody want to speak their native language. I'm hungarian moved to the UK and I'm Hungary now cause my Dad got a stroke. Even if i cant speak enough good by English , I would like to. I cant go back to the UK unfortunately cause they leaved the EU. So if i wanna live a normal life i have to move to Germany but i really dont want to learn German. I dont want to speak hungarian and german as well. I lived in the UK 7yrs and just loved it. In the high school learned german , 20yrs ago i had the B2 language paper , i was able to watch tv and listen german radio i was able to understand but better preferred to speak by English. I forgot my German and seems to me right now too hard. The pronunciation is so freaking hard after English. U are a lovely Girl , good luck with your Chanel , love it . Bye Love u
Interesting history ..when I found u I thought u were from UK .. I am glad to see you are from America .. I am also american (Mexico) living at Spain .. I do have a career at Telecom but I have been always interested in Pottery and currently in the process to make it happen ..thanks for sharing. I love your videos and tips.
When I first came across your channel I wasn't sure why you seemed familiar but alas you are also a fellow 'sconie! I grew up in West Bend and went to UW-Milwaukee and MSOE for undergrad and grad school before moving to the East Coast but now live in CA but my wife and I are talking about moving abroad. Thankfully a lot fo Germany (especially the Bavarian area) looks and feels a lot like the rural parts of WI should you feel homesick.
Living in the US, people not leaving their house / being less willing to go out is here too. I think people have trouble leaving home and making friends since COVID, and it seems like it’s all over. Maybe it’s just we got out of the practice of leaving or some people just found it easier to stay home, or everything legitimately has been getting more expensive. Currently moving someplace with more social services and I’m hopeful it will make life a lot easier like you said 💖
12:40 I love this idea. Not just doing world renowned potters but also like RUclips famous potters, like Florian. I'd be really cool seeing another skilled potter's perspective to show hey, this is why x person's pottery is so great. That, plus if you try to do their art but add your spin on it would be interesting.
Check out John Britt! He has some books, pdfs and RUclips videos and really breaks down glazes. His pdf "i need a cone 6 glaze that won't craze" inspired me to try making my own glaze that will do what I need. I just got all the ingredients and I'm excited to try. I recommend just jumping in!! I can't wait to see what you make.
I don't think there's anything wrong with 'copying'. Even in writing, it's okay to quote someone else's ideas/words as long as you credit them. Plus, you could have an artist of the week that you celebrate and show off their work. It would be educational!
I lived in the EU for almost 8 years for my studies and I prefer it over the US completely. The freedom you get from the safety is unmatched. I miss the freedom I had to go wherever I wanted at whatever hour of the day and feel safe. There was a diversity of ideas that is still unmatched, especially in the media. I miss the freedom people had to speak their mind and different ideologies that weren't ameri-centric. In the US, I prefer the cultural and racial diversity.
I love your idea for making pottery inspired by artists. It's not copying, it's experimentation :)
Glad you see it that way!
I totally agree! I've done it myself with writing (just for fun).
I like the longwindedness. Nice to watch during wheel throwing and feels like having a coffee with a friend 😊
Nice :) How cozy
I love your "steal like an artist" idea. I'm a mixed media artist and software designer and I can tell you everyone steals. Artists tend to take inspiration. Software designers under a deadline will heavily take from other designers. :)
Thanks for the encouragement! :)
I started pottery 19 years ago. I work in earthenware and commercial glazes. There was literally not a lot of information on commercial glazes. No RUclips. I spent so much time with trial and error. I also taught hand building in a community studio. It’s in my blood!
Nice! We have a lot in common then :)
I love hearing you just chat while you're working, it's so relaxing. Don't stop being 'long winded'!
Love from my home studio in the UK - you've given me so many tips and inspiration to set up my studio
I like the idea of recreating pieces from artists. It won't turn out the same anyways and it would be a interesting watch😊
good point!!
I found your comments on living in Germany very interesting. I once was German :)Go ahead and start mixing your own glazes. It is like baking a cake! Easy peasy!!!!
Thats nice to hear! :D

How cool to have that perspective 🙌

How cool is that!! Yes I went to college in Madison and Midwest Clay Project was life for a while afterwards 🙏 So glad it is still around :)
I'm definitely interested in the Great Artists Steal videos! I'll just be a fun adventure, and I'd love to see how your versions turn out.
I am excited to explore it! Thanks for the support!

It's getting inspiration. Potters always share their ideas and ways of doing things.

Merry Christmas. I'm loving your templates. I'm having so much fun and learning too. Can't wait to show you 'after' Christmas. So I don't ruin someone's surprises 😉
How lovely! I would love to see :)
Im still looking for a studio, but have acces to a friends owen. Its really interesting to hear how potters started up. It s a long Journey before you call yourself a potter.
for sure. Access to an oven is pure gold as you're getting started!
Love your ‘long-windedness’ we are hear to listen to you. Pls don’t change.

Love your videos ❤ Merry Christmas and a happy new year!
🎄❤️
Yes recreating is learning. ❤
11:14 so funny to watch this after the 2024 planning video

Ulm, yes :) well technically I live in the outskirts on the Bavarian side. Small world!!
I think your idea of stealing like an artist is great! I would love to see a bit of biography of the artist and why you love them
That's a great idea!
That idea of pottery based on other artists'art is so good!! I'd love to see it
Awesome! That seems like the winner, so I will definitely be trying it out in the new year!
I loved your coffee cups in donuts. I really want to try them!
I love the idea of "great artists steal," because I've been learning how to make abstract art (painting) from basically copying artists I admire online. It's always different in the end, but I learn new techniques and concepts and things from everyone.
For sure! Thanks for the support!

I think all your ideas for new videos and series’s (sic 😂) sound great! Looking forward to seeing a new version of throw down as well
Thank you!!

Your hair is looking adorable.❤

haha we were practically neighbors! It's true, very similar weather here ☀️☃️
Please give my love to Peanut.

It's interesting to hear how COVID has affected that friendliness culture. That is too bad!
Thanks for sharing, Mia! Love your videos. Have happy and prosperous new year! Cheers!
Thank you for being you!! Your content is amazing and very grounding.
thank you for your generosity! 🥰
LOL you two are the cutest - thank god for Visas ;)
Interesting video and very cute houses. Happy Holidays!
Thank you! You too!
Mia you are adorable and I love your experiments! Have you ever made a saki set? I am looking at trying a hand built one. ❤
Not yet! but that would be a fun project :)

Could you do a video on raw firing/greenware?
Picasso did do ceramics, I believe - plates, 3-d standing objects?
Happy Holidays Backatcha 🎄 ❤
❤️☃️❤️
Great content! Houses turned out adorable! 💜
The copying series sounds great but so does the interpretation of fine artist into pottery
Thanks for the feedback!
Fun fact Picasso did actually do some ceramics!
How would Dali make a mug? I would watch the heck out of that.
Merry Christmas ❤
❤️☃️❤️

Thanks for watching!
I think it's fine if you acknowledge your inspiration.
Answering questions could be experimental, since you have to do that to be self-taught.
I don't think there's anything wrong with 'copying'. Even in writing, it's okay to quote someone else's ideas/words as long as you credit them. Plus, you could have an artist of the week that you celebrate and show off their work. It would be educational!
Great idea!!
Dali makes almost all my mugs...😂
hahaha
@sofiedelcomyn7786 you win! Best comment ever.
Thoughts on polymer clay? Ever used?
Have you ever tried Kintsugi?

Good points! Hope you get a chance to stay here after your studies :)
How WOULD Dali make a mug ? .... 🤔
No idea!!
How do you get sponsors and ads on your videos?
At a certain point, sponsors reach out to you. You can also reach out to them too!
How do you go about reaching out? Also thank you for the quick reply!
I thought you were German!!
nope :)
long winded chatty american!! haha just joking. I would be interested in your artist recreation series!
haha indeed! Thanks for the feedback :)
