I love how this is both good advice and actually uplifting. So much art and business advice is remarkably soul crushing lol Thank you for stressing the creation part as well as self care. Artists gotta art, so make art. Art is valid even without business on the other end of it. And art is special because we're not algorithmic machines. Take care of the artist, and you take care of your art
I actually sold some of the first cups I ever made at a recent art market. They were small and uneven with thick walls but people loved them! I priced them really cheap, just to get them out of my house, but the folks that bought them were really excited about them. Definitely worth starting early.
Thank you for your post. I love the quote "envy is the thief of joy". Very profound statement. Wishing you many blessing and thanks for including your precious doggie, it brightened my afternoon.
This was honestly one of the best videos I've seen. Thank you so much for your clear and caring advice!! And when you showed all your work on the shelves, I gasped! Your work is very beautiful!
Thank you so much! This is so very encouraging and helpful! I’m fulfilling a lifelong desire (I’m 63!) to learn and sell pottery and have been taking lessons for four months. I started an Estsy shop (with sublimation mugs) but it’s been slow. I’m on the verge of renting studio space to start making pottery to sell. This is just what I needed to hear!!!
As a fellow online art seller, the first one hit HARD! LOL, I often will reject pieces (I hand paint earrings) that I THINK aren't perfect or don't like personally. This is no way means I'll sell bad products, but I need to remember that some perspectives desire other aspects of art. I support a local ceramics artist.
I began my business in Jan 2020 and spent hours making a Shopify store, setting up Etsy and learning DHL shipping rates lol. It was so stressful I ended up cancelling the online stores and just now focus on selling at a few local markets per year, as well as direct sales to existing customers (who will text me what they want). I only work PT due to having small kids, so if you are doing ceramics FT (8-10 hour days) I am sure you can manage the online shop sales channels... but man alive, it was hard managing socials too. I also got rid of IG and that gave me hours per day back haha! and I have been making a lot of small art projects. You need to do whatever works for you. So many people tell me I 'NEED' Instagram lol. No, no I do not. My Master Ceramics teacher (55 years old) has neither social media nor an online store and she does very well.
Wow! I'm so impressed that you're actually sharing your thoughts and humanness with us! I can feel and hear your authenticity and I feel like I'm listening to a person speak instead of watching a video on a topic. You're very likeable. Keep up the authenticity please :)
I've noticed that I love seeing other artists and businesses as an inspiration and for fun while I'm doing something else, and then I feel very inspired, but when I catch myself comparing them with myself and my art while thinking about my own ideas I feel devastated, as if could never do what someone else is doing, but that's just wrong... if I were the one showing my work, someone else would be jealous of me probably...So it's a vicious cycle 😅 The most important thing is exactly to focus on your art as you said. Great video💗
I'll be practicing on selling at the next Alameda Antique Fair the first weekend of next month..... look for the red and orange table cloths. If you like Vintage .
Paused this video to reset my app timers on my phone. Thank you for the reminder on that. And thank you for sharing about "start early" and to not compare to others. Finally dipping into trying to make pieces for sale and I've never had the confidence to do a sale - perhaps in the spring I will give it a go! :)
I LOVE your thought process dear, nice ceramics❤your art of making and selling is ideal. I will have that in mind when I start selling art hopefully professionally by God's Grace . Thank you for sharing. Congratulations to everyone that has started making their own works and selling 👍
i dont do ceramics but this video is one of the most insightful videos i've found on the internet! thank you for sharing your experience and takeaways from doing your ceramic business
Great advice. I've never heard of the story about the professor who asked half his students to make as many pots possible and half to make them high quality. Looking back, getting good at quantity was my game changer in pottery.
Being the best you that you can be and letting your love and passion show in your work will attract those who love the same. Always be authentic to yourself. I love your sweet creations!
Seriously. I’m a relatively new potter and looking to start selling my pieces. This vid is the best and most practically insightful video on the subject that I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a LOT. The concept of practicing making pottery is common. But the concept of practicing SELLING totally opened my mind to a new way of looking at the process of selling. Brilliant!! Thank you so much.
I just started pottery and this was such a great video. Thank so much for being positive and giving great advice!!! I was feeling discouraged and this video really made me feel more confident with just practicing and not being afraid to put myself out there :)
Thank you so very much for the video ...I have been helplessly comparing myself with other artists on Pinterest. Like you were doing earlier, scrolling mindlessly all day.. Ahh I do feel better now..going to get my head straight now....
I’m happy that you came into my YT feed today. You make lovely, original pieces. I like your style! And, your advice and insight is greatly appreciated. Lindsay in Toronto 🇨🇦
Stumbled on your video and just wanted to say that on top of the lovely advice and content, you have a chill and genuine way of explaining things and I really like it.
thank you for this video, I want to start my business sometime this year but I'm still a little unconfident about my knowledge and skills, so watching this was really helpful specially the pricing aspect because one of my recurring thoughts is how can I price my pieces in comparison to the most well known ceramists in my city, and I feel bad thinking that puting a price similar to them is a joke because they've been in the business for years. thank you again for this video, it was recommended by the algorithm and i'll subscribe to see more of you in the future, best of lucks
Hi! thank your for sharing all this valuable information. My pottery journey started 6 months ago , and I also struggled knowing when my art would 'ready'. I am now working on my first small collection, and your video gave me the motivation I need to start practicing selling :)
I used to like pottery as a child, so I got into 3D art later and now I am considering to create pots and many ther models with resin 3D printers, then paint them by hand. Not the same, but your video was still helpful! Satisfying to watch your process
Thank you so much for sharing your honest thoughts and experiences! This information is super valuable 🙏 Also like the quote: "envy is the thief of joy" very well put. Many blessings from South Africa 💖
Thank you this was such a straight-forward and honest video. Three top tips covered in detail feels exactly right. I think you touched on things that we artists often feel or think.
I love your advice and to be honest I was squirming when I saw you wash your splash pan and basin in the kitchen sink. Do you have a clay capture underneath the sink? A clay trap?
A great question Liza! I actually already wiped everything down twice before going to my kitchen sink. I am slightly obsessed with having a clean wheelhead when I throw so I like to wash off the small dust layer off in the sink, and dump out the water outside :) Nothing goes down the drain, it's just the biggest place for running hot water.
I happened to chance on this video as it came up on my recommended and I am so glad I clicked in! I am a year into pottery and the inertia to create my own social media account and start selling has been real - I just feel like my work is never polished enough and I am still trying to find a style as you said. You brought up some really good points and it's a timely reminder to get on creating my own pottery account. Thank you for that! :)
What great advice, tnx. I have a full-time, demanding consulting business. In my spare time, I dabble in arts and crafts. I would love to reach a point where I can sell my work. Your advice is so helpful.
Really loved the tips you shared, they are really applicable to most businesses, especially when we are at the early stages of starting up. I definitely agree with your limiting the use of social media, your tip about using the iPhone settings was really interesting & helpful (I didn’t know that😊). Your focus on your mission and daily journaling & goals setting is really effective in keeping us present with our own targets, etc. I loved your sharing of story of the pottery students who focused on quantity & price. We have to move forward even if we fear to make mistakes. Thank you again for sharing ❤️❤️❤️
Thanks for this! Ive been saying for years that I cant sell without finding my own signature style, so I just give all my pieces away to friends and family. I am just starting to realize that maybe selling my stuff isnt so bad, even if I dont have a signature look. I tried online, but id rather sell locally at markets. Also going to ask at a few shops if they would allow me to sell there.
Obviously everything you are doing is building a business And ultimately your confidence that shows in your lovely work And your willingness to share your experiences …namaste
I LOVE this video. It’s very inspiring and uplifting. I just started dabbling with air dry clay about a month ago and I know a lot of my pieces so far don’t look perfect but this video just changed my whole perspective and it was very nice to hear. I love that you were honest too. ❤❤❤ following now 😊
It’s so hard when many people are doing the exact same thing. I guess just keep going and do what you love. You’ll probably have to keep a day job for a while though.
Thanks so much for sharing this! Your art is SSSSOOOO KAWAII!!😍 I love them! And you're living my dream life. So good for you and maybe I'll dare to do this too. 😎👍 So thank you.
I came for the tips and stayed for the hound! Just kidding, I stayed for the tips as well :) I have two greyhounds that inspect my work and as of now I am on the first stage you mentioned to try and overcome, aiming for the perfect piece before selling. Your work is amazing!
This was a great great video!!! We bought out first bag of clay in feb 2019. I've sold a little, just to friends, but we are ready to branch out and start selling. Thanks for your insight 👍🏼 Best wishes and do you have an insta? Your pots are cute!
TYSM Miller Mommy 🤍 !! Your comment really brightens my day :) My Insta is @jingjingceramics. I am excited to see you branching out!! Feel free to connect with me on Insta. xoxo.
Hi Farhana, thank you! I am glad you found it helpful. I don't have a clay trap in my sink. What I usually do is I still use my sink for washing, but I catch the dirty water in a bucket and either recycle it or dump it in my garden.
I'd like to know your thoughts on shipping pottery, including pricing and also do you think it's profitable enough to sell online since you have to also charge for shipping?
I love how this is both good advice and actually uplifting. So much art and business advice is remarkably soul crushing lol Thank you for stressing the creation part as well as self care. Absolutely agree. We are people first then artists!
@@jingjingceramicsshould I use ebay or etsy? What do you recommend?
Thank you❤

"Release your art back into the wild" I love this!!!❤
BTW, your pieces are so adorable (as is your dog!)🐶

I really like your video it is very informative. Really like your work. However where do you wash your wheel tray? Does it have a clay trap?
Hi Farhana, thank you! I am glad you found it helpful. I don't have a clay trap in my sink. What I usually do is I still use my sink for washing, but I catch the dirty water in a bucket and either recycle it or dump it in my garden.
