Square rim for a mug?! SQUARE RIM FOR A MUG? WHAT ON EART... Okay okay, calm down Florian, phew. You did FANTASTICALLY and this is such an interesting watch too, you've dissected me. What a glorious video, Mia, and just like you said, you learnt so much attempting somebody else's style, right? That's exactly what my apprenticeships felt like, forcing yourself to adapt and to create someone else's pots can do wonders for your own skill, and everything learnt is transferable and can be channeled back into your own work. I appreciate all the kindnesses to no end, but hey, you're a brilliant potter with a different style and way of doing things, and that's precisely why this craft is so fascinating. It would suck if we all made the same pots.
THIS is what artists who know what making art is all about. How wonderful that an inspiration/muse/mentor takes the time to be encouraging and follow along. I think Mia is so terrific, and I think you're terrific for a lovely comment. This is so terrific to see.
You are an absolute gem Sir Gadsby. Mia is spunky, brave, talented, humble and honest. It’s why we all love and cherish her. This was one of the most fun RUclips videos I’ve seen yet! Getting to read your response right after was the cherry on top! Going along with what you said about the value in learning to recreate other potters pots, who should Mia try and recreate next?!? And how about you try and recreate something Mia has made? Maybe her tile board with her studio name but with your own? Thank you for being such a true gentleman. It’s a pleasure to watch you both. Cheers from Maryland in the US!
I hope Florian does watch this, because you did SO GOOD! My favourite parts are when you surprised yourself with how well you executed some of these very intimidating techniques.
I never realized how technically impressive Florian’s work was! I have zero experience with pottery, so your telling us about the differences was very interesting. He makes it look easy

And the pieces that you make are beautiful! So, please don't sell yourself short. Especially when you are still young, and have many years left to hone your craft. ❤
I'm a self learner less than a year into my journey telling myself the same things you are telling yourself at the 13:12 mark. But from my perspective, you are Florian, cause I came here to learn from you. Imposter syndrome is a funny thing. Thank you for putting it all out there for people to learn from. 🙏
Thanks for verbalizing that so well. I love FG's creations because of their clean distinct style. As a untrained beginner like you and Mia, it's a exciting but daunting journey to find that personal artistic style. Although, I just wonder if FG has a wild side and wants to reinvent... e.g. Michael Jordan plays baseball, Garth Brooks is Chris Gains. You get what I'm saying?
@kleinwolterinkable I do! I find freedom in having no idea what I'm doing. As I learn what is possible and what is me, will I find myself feeling boxed in? Or is there so much to learn in this craft that I'll be able to wander aimlessly forever? IDK, but it is a very fun thought.
I learned pottery from college classes and from spending every spare minute in the studio around classes that I was able to for a couple semesters because I soooo loved it.....but that was 20 years ago. 😂 I never thought that I would be able to afford the equipment to throw at home as the kids' pottery wheels back then simply didn't work, but I couldn't stand to part ways with my tools.....just in case. About 6 months ago I stumbled on your review on one of the new Vevor beginner wheels....and it worked!! I was so excited and asked my husband to buy me one for my birthday last month!! I am now re-teaching myself. After 20 years of not throwing, it's coming along! 💗 I'm mostly at the stage of practice throwing....practice trimming …....throw in reclaim bucket. Practice throwing....practice trimming …....throw in reclaim bucket. 😂 😂 But who showed me that a working budget wheel exists now and inspired me to get back into it?? YOU, Mia! Everyone looks up to someone and that person inspires them.... Technically trained or self taught really doesn't matter.... It's more of an art style and/or a teaching style that resonates with a person that inspires them. You are that person for me. YOU inspire me! 💗 I really enjoy watching you create, especially on the wheel, and have learned so much from you!! Thank you for sharing your honest and humble artwork with the world!! 💗
OKAY. The click bait worked. EDIT* I think you did well! :) As an artist that trained in academia, I want you to know that the feeling is 100% mutual when it comes to training. There is something beautiful and out-of-reach to the work you make when it isn't influenced by academia (or traditional forms of training in any art & craft). I think it is important to acknowledge the differences without saying one is "better" than another! You're super talented and you gained a new subscriber!
I started throwing about 2 years ago and learned almost everything about throwing and trimming by watching and dissecting florians videos, which are amaaazing and super educational - BUT watching You as an experienced potter trying and struggling yourself, really reminded me how crazy complex his technique is, and that I should never pressure myself to recreate his perfection, as i sometimes do. I really needed this, thank you so much for your honest and inspiring, playful approach to learning - i really love your videos (& pots!)
You should feel so proud of your work ! You do have a lot in common with the great pottery Master Mr. Gasby : you're both great teachers, you're very generous with your work and share it with the world and your videos are amazing ! Thanks for everything 👏 Bravo !
i'll say it again: you remind me so much of my big half-sister, who is a blacksmith, violinist and aikido teacher and just the coolest person in the world 😊 because she has excellent taste in music too. lovely video as always, but especially the audio ❤
I've followed you and Florian and I think you both are equally stunning in your craft. Both of your channels have something wonderfully unique. I love watching both types of videos.
Yep! I've been inspired by a bunch of potters on the RUclipss. You, Florian, Alchemy Ceramics, and a bunch others. I tried throwing like Florian for a while and sort of found my own "voice" in the process. I like to throw porcelain with sharp angles these days. My Ma bought your teapot template and now she's got a bunch around the house!
Gadsby may be a jewel of a masterful ceramicist, but YOUR valuable contribution is that you humbly illustrate the multi-faceted nature of ceramics skill-learning. Before one becomes a master through whatever means, one must generously immerse oneself in a process of embodied learning. Watching your journey of generating a professional ceramics practice is joyful, and part of my diet of learning about ceramics from others. Though I fully understand your humility in the face of lifetimes of learning and expertise - that you are aware of as a professional, I am still grateful for your videos that show a modest life-long learner taking great strides and sharing. Thank you.
I just had my first pottery class and of course came to RUclips to find potters. After watching several potters, I subscribed to just two, you and Florian. How cool it is to see you and Florian interacting in comments - it confirms my decision on who I chose to follow!
Love his work, and it’s sooo hard to purchase any of it. This is genius and that’s how I was taught in my creative writing classes in school. Study and imitate and then make it your own. I’d love to see more videos like this.
I love Florian - his voice is so calming. I found your channel after watching his. I like how you are so relatable. You both have great, enjoyable content. Thank you!!
It's always a great skill challenge to attempt to replicate others. Not in a "I'm going to steal their style" way, but to force yourself to understand the hands someone else's work. You never know what creativity you'll unlock in your own skill sets when you do something out of the box. I've attempted to craft works in his style, and it has been very beneficial to my work as well. Well done!
Well done! I'm a beginner, self taught the past 6 months, but with a job and hectic life. I love watching your channel, but yes, when I found Florian last winter (and so many like yourself), I was having trouble and it was when I'd try to replicate a piece, I placed his video over my wheel and wow that helped so much. Just a different solution after trying a few other ways. BTW you're just fine, I was a painter for 40 years and went to art school with an excellent ceramics program (KCAI early 80's) but I never was able to get it as an elective and always wanted to, so now I am. I realize my old classmates may be masters now at their craft, but that doesn't deter me from trying it now. In fact they have been encouraging me. I think what I can bring in printmaking, painting, and sculpture can be of essence to what I create in ceramics. Pardon my monologue.
GIRL!!!! At 15:15 I felt the pride you had in your work! Well done! I'm also a self taught potter and though I have many fails, I do a happy dance in my studio when I get something right!!! Great job!!!
I love watching your videos more than anyone else's therefore I learn so much from YOU! This was fun to watch but that little negative self-talk... you are very talented and your style does not need to be compared with anyone else's and we love you.
Love your enthusiasm, confidence, humility, bravery -great life model. I also love and am awed by Florian's mastery and aesthetic. Keep up the good works and spirit of exploration.
I haven't finished the video yet, but wanted to please encourage you not to be down on your skills. You are a wonderful potter! So is Florian, and you are both different and unique!
As someone who is trying to overcome perfectionism, your videos are such helpful models of what a healthy way to view yourself in the craft looks like. In all honesty, I've been stuck in decision paralysis for the past two weeks because I was so afraid of the result being bad and money being wasted. Your videos feel like therapy for me, just to be able to hear all those thought processes, self-reassurance, and healthy confidence while also objectively knowing your own skill level. I love how you never compare yourself to others and feel dejected. You always just let yourself be the standard of your skill, which I truly admire.
Mia,! This is outstanding! What a fabulous job you have done. I was sitting there cheering “You can do it!” the whole time. I sure do believe in you. Your work is always incredible and your own style is such a vibe. What an interesting way to challenge yourself. I absolutely adore the teapot. The slightly different proportions of yours makes it look grounded, comfy and cosy. I have a thing for this kind of pottery shape. When I select something to buy in a shop, I always hold it in my hands to see how it feels. I love bowls and mugs that I can cup in my palms and your teapot looks like it would feel good to hold it. Florian Gadsby is an amazing artist and I so admire his work. His attention to detail is incredible and the way he finesses every aspect of everything he throws is incredible. You have your own unique style and ways of finessing and finishing your work and it’s beautiful in its own way.
This is the first time I've ever seen one of your videos and I am instantly hooked. Self-deprecating humor in the making process is always so relatable. When you revealed the finished pieces, I audibly gasped. They look incredible!
omfg. I see Florians videos all the time, and it blows my mind how intricate and perfect his pottery is, and it's crazy to see other people trying his designs. I've never thrown pottery on the wheel before, I've only done hand building and sculpture
Never underestimate being self taught! You went from 0 knowledge to making gorgeous works of art all on your own! You are amazing in your own right ! 🎉🎉
You did so great!!! Every piece is just gorgeous!! You don’t give yourself enough credit, the fact that you’re self taught and so capable and talented speaks volumes about who you really are!!! Incredible video!!! Thank you!!! ❤❤❤❤❤
Love these series! As a beginner it is a wonderful way to get to know more artists, styles and to see you try and explaining where you are going through as an experienced artist, is truly inspiring and helpful.
Such a wonderful crossover of my two favourite pottery creators! I found you both at around the same time and learn so much from both of you. I sincerely hope Florian watches and enjoys this video 🤞🏻
I am glad i found you on RUclips. I think you should embrace your amazing skills. We never feel like we're as good as the next guy. We keep striving to be as good as we can be.
This experimenting from others is right in there with what I’m doing, right now. I love this series! We can always learn from others! Yes!! More of this!
Do not underestimate the characteristics of the clay. When I was young I used to know a potter who had set up his workshop in a region that during the nineteenth century had supplied the entire city of Munich (Germany) with dishware but had not had any ceramics workshops for decades when he started out there. Unlike most other potters in Germany who use clay from the Westerwald region he dug up and prepared his material from a local clay pit. Whenever I visited him I was invited into his workshop to throw a couple of pieces. All I can say is: That stuff was absolutely magic. Never before (and never afterwards) have I been able to throw pieces so thin and delicate as with the clay from that place. And with so little effort.
These are gorgeous. All credit to for such a brilliant set, when Florian has made thousands of the same pots. I’m glad you gave yourself 10/10. The colour of the glaze is gorgeous too 😊
I love that you're doing this! I got to meet him at a talk he gave in London a few weeks ago. it was a great talk and he seems like such a genuine and nice guy. Great work! :)
This was amazing! You SHOULD be so proud of yourself! Florian is an inspiration to me as a growing potter, but so are you. I was literally cheering you on the whole video! I've sat and watched his videos and said ALL those things you've said here - those walls are sooooo thin, the trim on those foot bowls are so much more complicated than they look at first glance, how the HECK does he throw such thin spouts (and don't get me started on the dip pens). You're a champ for experimenting and learning and sharing that vulnerable process with us all!
It's interesting watching you be so intensely critical of your work here, because at every step of the way I kept thinking about how beautiful your mugs and bowls were. Total whiplash!
"I will never be as good..." Happiness is freedom from expectation. Your approach to your vocation is what inspires me the most. Avoid the cult of perfection (attaining expectations) and continue this pursuit of excellence! "Learn from him, not from me..." I will learn from both, different lessons of course.
Hi Mia, I love your work and how you explain things. This is a cute video, but just stay as you are. Florian is indeed somewhere up high, but I respect where you are, where we all are :D
Holy moly girl! You are so much better than you give yourself credit for! He must be flattered by your adoration! Kudos! 💜💜💜 You nailed it! How did the teapot pour? 🤗
I too am a long time Florian fan. I love that you did this experiment. I really love that you were so impressed with your bowls after trimming. This goes to show that if you want a thin pot, throwing thin isn't the only way and sometimes not the best way to get there. I have just purchased Sumi von Dassow's book called In the Potter's Kitchen. It's a magnificent read that has all functional pottery, from microwave popcorn popper to fermenting pots, some tutorial info, inspiration and recipes. I'd love to do a Julie/Julia thing where I make my way through the book making the pots and making the recipes. If you have not heard of this potter, she's definitely one to look up. She has many articles and several books and videos. If you have not read Florian's book, it's well worth a read as well.
@12:47 is me. I am with you. However, I haven't even started. I was reflecting what I liked during my childhood/teenage years and it was clay. A few years back, I bought me some clay and attempted to just play. I beat myself up for not being good, I had lost my potential, I don't have the opportunity. Well, that is stupid of me to think. I may be 35 now with no (current) crafting experience. I sure as hell can be taught, definitely self taught. I have found your channel today and it has really encouraged me to give pottery another go. Now, time to watch videos on where to start. Haha. But, as I said, i am with you on.
I’m glad RUclips suggested me this video. I really enjoyed it (I’m a fan of Florian myself) and loved how humble and honest you are. Your pots look amazing! It’s a great idea to “steal” from our heroes - we learn so much from that. I’m a self taught singer/guitar player and I feel you when you talk about not having the means to be classically trained and the anxieties or insecurities that come from it. But it’s so important to keep trying, to keep doing our thing our way and be grateful we can do what we can with the means that we have. And what you make is amazing! ❤
Mia, 5 stars, for SURE!!!!! YOU are such an incredibly inspiring Potter. I think the fact that you "are" self taught, (like most of us) is what "inspires" us to follow your lead to explore the entire world of pottery. We've learned to experience a NEW joy by experimenting as you do to expand our own personal talents. YOU are an incredible teacher!
Stop right now, you are a really good Potter, I love your videos. I do watch Florian too, his videos are amazing but as you correctly said he's had a traditional start as an apprentice Potter and Learnt from the best, you are self taught, that's amazing too. He is a perfectionist in his way of throwing and glazing. Your makes come from the heart, you put your sole into each piece, this video shows what talent you have, as you say you have set yourself up trying to match his work, he does it daily, you watch from afar his work as do alot of us, but your doing it, you pulled handles off pots😮 the bowls foot, feet, were beautiful and the teapot, you have to agree, you did it. I hope he watches this, he will see what an impression he has on you and your work in this video is just Wow, I'll say it again, Wow. GREAT VIDEO🎉😊❤
Please please please make more videos like this! I just started throwing 10 weeks ago and Florians videos were the first videos I watched. I knew he was on another level but thought my pieces should be as thin and refined as his (whaaaaaaa?). I love your honesty and humility while teaching...and would love to see your perspective of other styles. Also, why to freaking go with that teapot...your skills are amazing.
i have to say.. this video alone has set in stone that my goal to be a potter needs to happen by this year (ive been so busy moving and doing contract SWE work) that i really wanna find place to move w/ my partner and tackle ceramics. your process here reminded me what i loved so much about printmaking in the studios when developing an image and learning how to layer inks with equipment. i love the challenges art makes us think about and your journey through this makes me miss that aspect of the creative process. theres so much to learn!
Omg I love that you tried this. I am in awe of Florian work too. Your breakdown of his style was really informative to have alongside his tutorials. I'm still a bit of learning away from having a go, but will definitely try the same thing one day!
Lovely pottery set! I watch Florian too and am very impressed by his shapes. I am a Jeweller thought, so I know nothing about pottery, I just love watching craftspeople. :) But I do this too, watch people on you RUclips and try to recreate, its a great way to learn!
You are such an inspiring potter. I love your tutorials/demos and look forward to more! Thank too am a lover of Florian’s aesthetic and am working to emulate some of his elements into pots that I make. Some things, like the hard break angles and inverted tops on some of the vases are just so satisfying to make…!
I am SO impressed with you as a person and a potter, and I love all your videos. I am also self-taught and I totally know how you feel but you’re absolutely killing it! ❤
Loved this video! I love it when you replicate others' work. As a newbie potter, that's how I learn (watching others' work via videos and trying to do what I've watched). I loved your videos replicating the Great Pottery Throw Down. Please do more of these kinds of videos!
This was a fun and interesting experiment. I really love watching both of you and just seeing the joy in creation. These pieces are such a cute set! I love that shade of green.
I have gotten invaluable guidance from Florian and you so I really got a special kick out of this video. I follow both of you and have often thought it would be grand for the two of you to meet. You two are my favorite virtual teachers. I enjoy and admire your different styles. Brava Mia!
I mean...ambitious, but really well done! And Florian himself approved, so bonus. Your pottery is great, but I love how you nailed that cinematic video style. Beautiful videography, and very engaging all the way through.
I like your videos and Florians the most. So I‘m very happy about this one. And you have many reasons to be proud. Not only for good copies of Florians work…And I was happy to see his comment down here to your video…Thanks for your work and the way you are, Mia! 🫶

placing the video over the wheel, genius! Thanks for watching ❤️
I love hearing what other people are like.
Really nice and cool to see a direct comparison between my two favorite potters.
GIRL!!!! At 15:15 I felt the pride you had in your work! Well done! I'm also a self taught potter and though I have many fails, I do a happy dance in my studio when I get something right!!! Great job!!!
The pieces turned out so beautiful, that green is gorgeous
thank you! ❤️
I love watching your videos more than anyone else's therefore I learn so much from YOU! This was fun to watch but that little negative self-talk... you are very talented and your style does not need to be compared with anyone else's and we love you.
thank you so much 🥰
Love your enthusiasm, confidence, humility, bravery -great life model.
I don't do pottery but love seeing you and Florian on RUclips. And it is amazing to see it combined in 1 video!
Bravo!!!!! I watch FG all the time and it was courageous of you to attempt his style but I gotta say girl ''You did yourself Proud!'' Well Done Mia!
You don't need to be so bashful! Your work is great, just need to own it!
GUUUURRRLLLLL!!!! These are sooo good!! Don't doubt yourself you are wonderful!
Potters always amazed me, my grandmother used to do it in her youth. It is such a tactile craft and every video I watch im sooo jealous
These are gorgeous. All credit to for such a brilliant set, when Florian has made thousands of the same pots. I’m glad you gave yourself 10/10. The colour of the glaze is gorgeous too 😊
Personally I think your work on these objects are brilliant. The way you demonstrate everything is incredibly useful. Congratulations!
Oh your work is beautiful! It was so fun watching you make the bowls and the teapot. I think your handles look great!
Girl! Such amazing results 🎉❤ as a self taught potter myself i completely understand you about not feeling “as good” as traditionally trained potters
I love that you're doing this! I got to meet him at a talk he gave in London a few weeks ago. it was a great talk and he seems like such a genuine and nice guy. Great work! :)
Your green glaze is gorgeous!!
omg this is dangerous. I do too many different crafts, told myself not to get into clay too.. then found your channel. Love all you do
This was amazing!
I'm gonna be that person and say that I prefer yours over his, absolutely beautiful work.
Haha. But, as I said, i am with you on.
yes I’d love to see more of your beautiful work. appreciate your down to earth , honesty. Anne
Great job! Pushing outside of our comfort zones (in life and pottery) are super hard. Seeing you push yourself has inspired me to push my own making.
the whole time i was hearing mia doubt herself, i was like, don't talk about my friend that way! you are so good at what you do
❤️🥹❤️❤️
You really sell yourself short, you pottery is amazing!! Especially knowing it's selftought!
Just ordered my shimpo VL Whisper! I love your stuff and you have gave me faith to dive deep into this craft! Thank you so much!
I have wheel envy
congrats on your new wheel! That's my dream wheel lol!
You made the pieces so well! Really enjoyed watching your enthusiasm and technique. Thank you!
Thank you for watching! ❤️
Ohhh they’re beautiful!!!
I absolutely adore this set🥰
I would be happy to watch you make/throw any idea you come up with.
I love your channel ☺️
Thanks for your kind words ❤️
Mia, 5 stars, for SURE!!!!! YOU are such an incredibly inspiring Potter.
I think the fact that you "are" self taught, (like most of us) is what "inspires" us to follow your lead to explore the entire world of pottery.
We've learned to experience a NEW joy by experimenting as you do to expand our own personal talents.
YOU are an incredible teacher!
Thank you so much! ❤️😭
Another great video, and great art.
Always awesome and inspiring to see someone show their passions and interests and be excited about it!
I was extremely impressed with how cool they look at the end. You oversell your failure to much... ;) And Florian is a true master. and a kind soul.
Also, why to freaking go with that teapot...your skills are amazing.
the best crossover I never expected but needed
aww thank you ❤️
i have to say.. this video alone has set in stone that my goal to be a potter needs to happen by this year (ive been so busy moving and doing contract SWE work) that i really wanna find place to move w/ my partner and tackle ceramics. your process here reminded me what i loved so much about printmaking in the studios when developing an image and learning how to layer inks with equipment. i love the challenges art makes us think about and your journey through this makes me miss that aspect of the creative process. theres so much to learn!
This is so lovely! I'm a fan of both you and Florian, so this was a treat to see. The pour on your teapot is sweet. ❤
Wow! They came out so beautifully. Well done.
What a fun reminder that our greatest growth happens when we reach beyond what we believe are our limits!
well said!
Love it!! I watch his videos too, he is very highly skilled and I know I never will get to that level.
I never watch full videos but loved this!! I’m new to pottery and can’t wait to have a wee space of my own. Let the saving begin haha
Florian Gadsby, or the great Gadsby as I call him, lol. He is one above us. I think you did a great job. The pieces you made are very good ❤
I am SO impressed with you as a person and a potter, and I love all your videos.
Thank you so much! I will continue :)
21:57 theese are SOOO INCREDIBLY SWEET!!!
21:06 I love your (what I presume to be a) poncho! The colours are beautiful!
You did amazing! I just started taking classes and just received Florian's book today! Can't wait to learn more!
Previous to this you were the potter i watched... I love your style and attitude
This was a fun and interesting experiment. I really love watching both of you and just seeing the joy in creation. These pieces are such a cute set! I love that shade of green.
This is a fun and challenging video ! Well done and thank you Florian indeed !
I have gotten invaluable guidance from Florian and you so I really got a special kick out of this video. I follow both of you and have often thought it would be grand for the two of you to meet. You two are my favorite virtual teachers. I enjoy and admire your different styles. Brava Mia!
Thank you so much! I am glad you are getting something out of my videos :)
Great work! So brave to push yourself and try new things on camera. And I love that green glaze.
Wonderful job!! I watch Florian as well, along with many others. You all never cease to amaze me. Thank you for your videos. 😊
