Welcome to The Binge Eating Therapist channel! I'm Sarah, a former binge eater turned psychotherapist. Today, I'm addressing a crucial comment from a viewer about self-acceptance and its connection to binge eating. The viewer expressed confusion, stating that accepting themselves seems to equate to accepting binge eating, and they find happiness in letting themselves binge without guilt. Let's unpack this
Self-acceptance doesn't imply approval of every behavior; rather, it creates space and energy for positive change. Rejecting parts of ourselves triggers internal conflicts, leading to primal, reactive responses.
Acceptance doesn't mean approval of binge eating; it acknowledges its existence without exacerbating shame. The conflation of approval with love and worthiness stems from early experiences. As children, disapproval made us feel inherently unworthy, fostering a lifelong pursuit of external validation.
Self-acceptance brings recognition of inherent worth, allowing us to accept all parts of ourselves while acknowledging the need for change.
The commenter believes binge eating brings happiness. I question whether it's genuine happiness or relief from pain and shame. Binge eating can feel like rebellion and freedom, but it's crucial to distinguish pleasure from a compulsive pursuit that leads to diminishing returns.
Accepting our parts transforms the internal battle, fostering clearer thinking. When we accept ourselves, our parts reveal themselves, leading to a transformative relationship with ourselves. Binge eating, in this context, is not about enjoying food; it's a compulsion born from internal conflicts.True freedom lies in addressing the underlying pain and finding relief without resorting to destructive behaviors.
Binge eating, especially when compulsive, is an obsession that consumes mental space. Stopping this behavior brings freedom from food obsession, offering mental space to live a fulfilling life.
Join me on New Year's Eve for a live Q&A on RUclips, where we can delve deeper into binge eating recovery. If you're open to practicing self-acceptance, check out the guided meditation linked at the end of this video.
Thank you for watching, and I look forward to connecting with you on New Year's Eve!

Sarah, I am a longtime viewer and first time commenter. With 200 uploaded videos you must get hundreds of comments a day but I wanted to share your channel’s impact on me and express my deep gratitude.
I have suffered with BED for 14 years if not longer. As recently as two weeks ago I felt horribly lost, like I would need to climb Mount Everest to recover from this disorder. Your video on recovering outside of therapy, plus your video on how to conceptualize recovery as two states of being, have completely helped me reframe my thinking and recover.
In past videos you mentioned you treat being a therapist from the POV of being the therapist you wish you had. That really resonates with me because I am a math teacher and approach teaching math in exactly the same way. I learn something new about myself with every video of yours that I watch.
For me personally, your most powerful videos are the ones in which you share your own personal experiences with disordered thoughts and how you overcome them. Those types of videos are super impactful on me.
Your channel, eloquence, spirit, and desire to help us is a bright beam of light in this otherwise dark world. Your videos have also helped me combat my anxiety and OCD with the “don’t believe everything you think, don’t believe everything you feel” sayings. Thank you for everything.

That's so funny that all of your videos, that you have uploded in the past month, have been so relevant to me. As if I put a spell on you.
Either way, thank you so much! 💕
Edit: I also have distinguished three parts of myself:
    - rational part
    - emotional part
    - my looks
And my relationship with the three parts are as followed: emotional part is very energy consuming and my rational part tries to treat it. She tries to get it back up but the emotional part weighs too much that the rational part is tired of the emotional part. Meanwhile my looks are completely alone in a corner and she is looking at the other parts of myself struggling. My looks are like a neglected child who is wishing to be loved. I even drew her and she is a tiny little girl with no mouth, no voice.
I have a whole relationship between my parts. I have always described myself as different parts and I only now understand it completely.

What would you say to someone who uses food to cope with their life in general? As lots of streakers that won’t be going away…but never found an alternative way to deal that works? Now it just feels autopilot/compulsive and not even in response to certain emotions

Do you have a video defining binge eating? Does grazing all day count?

    • @TheBingeEatingTherapist
      @TheBingeEatingTherapist  6 месяцев назад +4

No one owns the term binge eating. There is binge eating disorder, which is a clinical eating disorder, but also there's the experience of compulsive eating and feeling out of control that can be just as valid even if it's not big binges. This video I talk about the difference: ruclips.net/video/8QeWRjqFmqc/видео.htmlsi=ptapEDH7OrQc4FzI

What are your thoughts on the similarities/ differences between weekend large cheat meals and bingeing?
Thanks for all you do ❤

Is it a problem to you? If it’s not distressing and you feel ok about it then that’s what matters. If it feels compulsive and causes shame then you might want to look at it as similar to a binge eating problem

@TheBingeEatingTherapist thanks for your response 👍 I agree that the presence/ absence of anguish / conflict is extremely important on the journey to freedom.
