"I've earned every dollar that's passed through my hands." I love that line.
people should LISTEN to the words the most underrated musician there is.
john mellencamp is one of the last 30 years greatest writer of songs, lyrics. word man.
well said Kathie you rock.
It was co-written, BTW ...
Amen
I agree with you... except for the underrated part. I can hardly think of JCM as underrated after growing up with his music
Got to thinking about this song today. I'm one year from turning 50, and this song was huge in helping me to navigate all the rough and tough times of being in your late teens, early 20's. Here is to you John, you are big part of the reason I'm here on this earth, with two great kids and a wonderful wife. When I die in 50 years, I want this song played at my funeral.
“I do things my way and I pay a high price..”
Got that right.
One of the best songs most people don't know. Just an amazing story by John.
Agreed. It was my favorite song from that album, I played it endlessly.
So true.
It DOES seem to get less attention. I think because it didn't get the radio play of 3 or 4 other songs on the LP it was on, "Scarecrow", an absolutely GOLD LP.....DOUBLE GOLD!!!!!!!!!!!!
Suck it up & tough it out. Be the best you can! Words I live by to this very day.
Art Wallace fuck yeah
Thanks Missy!! :)
There you go millenials!
My old man always said .. Time flies by....in my twenties I could care less now at 60 i wished I would of cared more ...
God Grant me the time to break even and make some people smile!
Eric Underwood Class of 81 Downey High school California USA ♥️🇺🇲🦅
Now that im older i can see he was right....he was always right! Miss you Pop's
I loved this song as a kid just because the music itself is excellent, but now in my mid 30’s I’m falling in love with it all over again for the story it tells. He’s truly one of the greatest songwriters to ever live.
THIS SONG IS A STORY, ITS A STORY ABOUT BEING HONEST AND COMMITTED TO YOURSELF, FAMILLY FRIENDS AND MORE THAN ANYTHING, HONESTY.....
I just did some research. As of 2022, John has done 812 concerts in his career. He'll be 71 years old on October 7, 2022. What an incredible body of work he has produced. Minutes to Memories is my favorite.
812 concerti wowww....💪💪 from Italy my icon from 1980
I saw him live in 87 twice. I wasn't even a fan just went because someone had extra tickets. To this day, I say it was the best concerts I'd ever been too. They sounded just like the album or better.
On a Greyhound thirty miles beyond Jamestown
He saw the sun set on the Tennessee line
He looked at the young man who was riding beside him
He said I'm old kind of worn out inside
I worked my whole life in the steel mills of Gary
And my father before me I helped build this land
Now I'm seventy-seven and with God as my witness
I earned every dollar that passed through my hands
My family and friends are the best thing I've known
Through the eye of the needle I'll carry them home
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can
The rain hit the old dog in the twilight's last gleaming
He said "son it sounds like rattling old bones"
This highway is long but I know some that are longer
By sunup tomorrow I guess I'll be home
Through the hills of Kentucky 'cross the Ohio river
The old man kept talking 'bout his life and his times
He fell asleep with his head against the window
He said an honest man's pillow is his peace of mind
This world offers riches and riches will grow wings
I don't take stock in those uncertain things
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can
The old man had a vision but it was hard for me to follow
I do things my way and I pay a high price
When I think back on the old man and the bus ride
Now that I'm older I can see he was right
Another hot one out on highway eleven
This is my life It's what I've chosen to do
There are no free rides, no one said it'd be easy
The old man told me this my son I'm telling it to you
Days turn to minutes
And minutes to memories
Life sweeps away the dreams
That we have planned
You are young and you are the future
So suck it up and tough it out
And be the best you can
@@kevinlaflamme9691 May be his best Kevin. I find I like it more and more as I become that OLD MAN!!!!!!
@@PaulRobert474 Pink Houses and Paper in fire is always my favorites, But this is definately JM underrated Masterpiece.
“The old man told me this my son I’m telling it to you.” And so the life has gone on from one generation to the next. Only Johnny can capture it so well in his songs.
Years ago my brother told me whenever he heard this masterpiece he would think of me.....we grew up 15 miles from Gary.....and today I am going to say my final goodbye to him....he is dying soon....finally, I cried......
Thoughts go out to you
My sister turned me on to John Mellencamp, she is gone now too.....
This song makes me emotional every time I hear it
Now when I hear this song I'll remember and say a prayer for Cheryl's brother and Nick's sister. And John Mellencamp. God bless you and your loved ones. Father thank you for all the
people you've created on this earth. And the love we've found and lost. Father comfort us daily and point us to your son Jesus and his Merciful Heart.
Holy Mother Mary ....pray for us. Amen.
I sent this song to my 3 sons. They needed to hear the lyrics...They're going to play for their children when they get a little older. A tradition is born!
this could be his best song totally awesome
He's got so many , it's very hard to pick one. JM got a virtual library of classic songs..
This album is so good. I grew up about an hour from John's hometown , so maybe that's why I paid some attention to his songs as a kid, and I respected his fame and liked some of his material, though I was usually listening to hard rock , metal and older country music. But now as a man in my late 40s I've come to realize he really is one of the best songwriters America ever produced . He can tell a story as well as Bob Dylan , has a gift for melody and thought provoking lyrics and ALWAYS has a top shelf bunch of players in his band. The guy really has an incredible body of work. He should be proud of it.
About 30 years ago I moved out from my childhood home and shared a house with 3 friends. We were all struggling but managed and when my birthday rolled around late in the fall they bought me a ticket to a John Cougar concert. To this day it was one of the best presents I have ever received and I will never forget them or the concert.
The open road and Mellencamp songs are a couple things that have brought me a lot of peace, joy & feeling alive. Thanks for the video.
One of the best from one of the best. Thank you John Cougar Mellencamp for being on the soundtrack for my life.
One of my top 5 songs of all time. Great melody, incredible lyrics, and superb vocal. Best Melton camp ever, and a total American Classic. Totally underrated, I have no idea why.
Powerfully moving. John is an American gift to music. Many thanks for accompanying me through my adult life, John. There's nothing I can say equal to good music like this. Music is for when you run out of words.
You are young and you are the future..so suck it up and tough to be the best you can❤️👍🏼
I was in my late twenties when this song came out. It is undoubtedly “my” favorite Mellencamp song but wow, looking back now and then realizing where I am in life now, I love it even more. This man can write so well and still writing “pure” and unpolished as ever.
this is the industrial heartland that I grew up in. Song pretty much captures a certain dignity that the mill guys fostered amongst themselves. "Nobody said it was gonna be easy"
Great song. The mills sucked.
I am from Germany. Best song forever!
I just had my 30 year reunion from Purdue University Northwest (formerly Calumet campus) at the County Line Orchard in Hobart, IN. I CRIED listening to this song. JCM is a Hoosier that really wrote not just a ballad, but an anthem for all of us!
EXTREMELY UNDERRATED SONGS FOR NON-FANATIC JOHN FANS
I'm from the Indiana cornfields, John always made he was singing about us!! Love John's songs, alot of his band are Hoosiers, some discovered from the Homegrown album from '79, wish I kept all my vinyl!
Such a wonderful song ! The lyrics after all these years, still can relate ! I can still hear my then GF singing this song at the top of her lungs in my Red IROC !!! GOOD TIMES ! I sure miss those days, the best of my life !!! Still hear my GF yelling Cougar !!! LOL !!! Getting old sucks !!!
This is so sentimental and sad it can make one cry.
go watch the slowed down acoustic version on MTV unplugged and I bet you just might cry? I did, only 10 minutes ago. The audio is very poor, but when the beautiful acoustic slide comes in, I just get so happy that tears begin to flow. Nothing better than a good cry!
Mike as my late , and my Dad told me was this, "Getting old ain't for pussies. Hell I just turned 60 this past year and I remember this song when I was a much younger man. It still rings true!
@@jimaspholm6296 As I turn 52 this year in 2019, growing up in the 80s is shown well on this video.....I feel sorry for all those are born today and will NEVER know how great it was to be alive then..... its way too fast today and way to P-C for me.
An honest man's pillow is his peace of mind.
My favorite John Mellencamp song; have travelled that route, am a Hoosier, live close to Bloomington, IN and love this musician!!
My sister lives by Lake Lemon and I met John in Bloomington once. He was very laid back and didnt act like a jerk.
best song ever
lyrics are so true

One of his lesser-known classics. "Days turn to minutes and minutes to memories, life sweeps away the dreams that we had planned" always puts a lump in my throat.
One of my favorite tunes of all time.thank you.
I got this album on cassette for Christmas when it came out in 1985. I was 12 then and this became my favorite song from this album. At 44 it's still my favorite song and scarecrow is still my favorite album by John Cougar Mellencamp and will forever be my favorite album by John.
Our hoosier heritage, love John Mellencamp and all the minutes to memories he brought to me!
I love this song and you have done a brilliant vid. I feel like I'm on that Greyhound bus in the American Mid-West, even though I'm actually sitting at my laptop at home here in New Zealand and never set foot on American soil apart from a few airports.
Just another classic from Mr Mellencamp, anybody who can consistently write music and melodies like John is national treasure ore he's been down to the cross road doing a deal😀
I consider the lyrics to this song to be classic Americana poetry. I have been listening to this song, on and off since its release. I can see myself on that bus ride, living in southwest Ohio, twenty-five miles to both Indiana and northern Kentucky. This is beautiful country, all year long. A person can learn from this song, many life lessons, if they think about what is being song about. John Mellencamp, whom I totally disagree with on politics, but do agree on the changes that need to be made to keep America the land of opportunity, and to continue to be blessed by God. America could easily become a second rate nation, if our policymakers do not make some serious changes. I would like to get rid of the whole lot of them, all parties, and have regular, working people, make our laws, who have not live privileged lifes. The first thing any elected official does once he is elected, is to prepare for his next election. Sorry for the commentary. Always exercise your vote. Your vote is worth as much as the richest person in America's vote. It is your duty as a citizen to vote. Also, never believe a word out of a politicians mouth, unless he is still young and new to the Washington bureacracy. I believe many politicians enter into politics for good and honorable reasons. I don't think it takes long to become jaded, once you are in the inner circle. I hope John Mellencamp is the still the man from Indiana, with compassion for his neighbors and community, Please John, do not turn Hollywood on us. The Hollywood/LA culture are a large contributor to the steady decay of character and the hard work ethic American's have alway been known for.
Well said Susan
Perfectly put!
are you running to be mayor of your local rural district, the truth be told compared to the third world nations sending to our heart lands to parasite ,like locust, our values should prevail, even if our nation of multiple millions cannot chose or select between Trump or Hillary bitch who had Bill by the balls and is a carreer politician. ..just once I would like a honest no agenda American politician who looks after third and other generation grass roots of all colors and stop the insane flood of ingratefull economic immigrants! !!!!!
Spot on commentary, Ms. Reif.
John's best song ever. A story of how fleeting life really is. Seven or eight decades is all you get.
Great video for a great song.
I've been playing this one for 30ish years. Now it's 2022 and its breaking my heart
"An honest mans pillow is his piece of mind", I'm Australian, but this works across most backgrounds, words to live by.
Edit, I'm 52 but grew up in small town country Victoria, factories that are now defunct or barely hanging in there, some parallels to the USA?
He was good before but this album made him great
Something about being young and being on the open road. Windows down, 8 track blaring, cruising in farm country, sipping a beer or blowing a joint with the feeling of having the world by the ass. One of those feelings you only have when you are young.
An honest mans pillow. Is his peace of mind.
Long a favorite of mine, along with Human Wheels. Both still bring tears to my eyes even after 30 years. Thank you for posting this.
John is a Great American Folk Singer...I want this song played at my funeral for the young to hear from me one last time....

A true piece of Americana
Congratulation Mr Mellencamp, very well deserved !

"An Honest Man's pillow is his peace of mind" Words to Live by.
Can't have the midwest without railroad in it ! Good Job !!
A great song with a great story...the whole Scarecrow record is one of the best singer songwriter records made.
Love this song..as simple as that
Sounds like John was sitting next to my dad
Life sweeps away the dreams we have planned.
That lyric still haunts me
God this beats about 85% of the Commercial Rock from the 80's. What a great songwriter.
I hear this song & I'm reminded of my dad. He was lot like the old man on the bus ride.
Best song he ever wrote.
simply amazing song and one of his best ones out there
This is the best written song I’ve heard just love it and I wish he would had made a video to go with it
Sitting in a steel mill in Gary listening to this
Scarecrow is my favorite Mellencamp album. Crank it up and your feet start moving.
...this is my life...it's what I've chosen to do....

Suck it up and Tough it out. Hellyesss
Thanks for posting. This one takes me back, back, back.
Love it . MAKES ME THINK ABOUT PAST AND FUTURE . AND OLD FRIENDS AND MY SMALL TOWN .
Mellencamp is truly "America's Poet" comparable to Bob Dylan in influence, only more rual and encompassing the pride of the working class. I bought this album at age 17 when it first hit the record stores. In my opinion it's his Magnum Opus.
Why wasn't this song way more popular than it was?
A great song. One of the best.
alot of cross country bus rides,, and alot of minutes turned into memories
I grew up on Highway 11....always a hot one.....
good choice👌 この曲大好き!
