  • Wire loom and split tubing is great for protecting wires in the engine bay or other areas outside the vehicle. The problem is it can be time consuming to install wires into it, and the jagged edge can hurt your fingers. How can we quickly install wires into wire loom? A wire loom tool is the solution!

I was buying bulk loom on the Grainger website, and passed on the tool at first, but after watching this video I added the tool to my cart. I have a lot of under chassis wiring to do on my pickup adding lights, accesories, etc. With cut resistant gloves on, this should make installation a snap. Great recommendation!

Much simpler, and cheaper, is to hold the wire to be installed against the split in the wire in the loom and then bend the wire loom away from the wire at about a 60 degree angle. This opens up the split in loom nicely, then simply hold the wire/wire loom and slide it along your index finger allowing the wire to be inserted.

That is what I've been doing, but the issue is that it does not always work, and especially if I've cut my thumb on something else. Invariably, with a cut thumb, I manage to get that cut opened back up by the edge of the loom. I'm older, and it takes much longer to heal now, so a tool is a nice benefit for someone like me.

good tool. if you make a small wrap of electrical tape over the wire, then pass the wire through the tool. then make a couple passes around the loom, it'll hold the loom and wire together.

You should demo it on installed wires on a car with no cuts. (e.g installing a wire loom on your existing wiring, not the other way around). That's where that slit on the tool comes in handy and the real purpose of the tool shines.
Very informative video nonetheless and thank you for the links. Cheers!

One thing you didn't mention, and I think I'm right on this..let's say you have a wire already run but not in the loom. It looks like you can drop the wire in even though it's terminated at both ends and join the wire into the loom. You were inserting the wire INTO the tool THEN inserting the tool and wire into the loom. My situation (fiber optic cable..unprotected) requires the wire (FO) be left in place. There are signals on it but it needs to be protected or groups joined. It looks like this tool will do that. Is that your opinion too?

So what about wires that are already installed into a vehicle? For example, I usually crimp a terminal on my power wire, push it threw the vehicle grommet and then route and loom it. Could I still do this or would I need to loom the wire prier to running it threw the firewall (kinda like using that "Chinese finger trap" loom)?
