Wow....just bought a PYLE PTED 06 desktop drum kit, and I've watched about 5 different automation vid's for Ableton and buddy, you've explained it the best!!!! Thank you so much. Chris MacKinnon Montreal, Canada!
Anyone coming here to get some useful tips, you don't need to drop a device (in this case, a Sampler) on a pad in order to rename it. The reason you can't initially rename a pad in an empty Drum Rack is because there's no device chain associated with it yet. You first need to open the Chain List by clicking on the 'show/hide Chain List' button (below the Drum Rack's on/off button). The Chain List will become visible, right-click in it and select 'create new chain'. Now you can right-click on either the chain or the pad and choose to rename it (with the pad/chain selected, CTRL+R/CMD+R to rename). Now click the 'I/O' button on the Drum Rack... in the Chain List window, you'll now also see the 'Receive/Play/Choke/Audio to' columns. If you duplicate the chain you previously created or create a new chain, note that the default 'Receive/Play' options show up as 'C1/C3'. Change those to C#1/C#3 and incrementally increase any further new chains that you create, otherwise any pad you trigger will trigger all the others. If you do this say, 16 times, then you'll have a full grid set up. Right-click on the title bar of the Drum Rack and select 'Save as default'. Now, every time you drag n drop a new Drum Rack in Ableton, it'll already have a full grid of pads set up that you can simply rename. Incidentally, if you hadn't just realised, you can right-click on the title bar of any of Live's devices and choose to save its current state as the default :)
Yo this is fire bro thanks so much! Now I just need to figure out how to get my drum module / triggers to ableton without having to UNPLUG my keyboard :/ MIDI through on the keyboard isn’t working. So when I want to do drum tracks I unplug the keyboard controller and plug in the midi cable from the drum machine where my triggers are all going in. Any ideas? Is there a way to combine multiple midi sources like that? Thanks
Hey, cheers for the message. I’m afraid, if your through input isn’t working on the keyboard I don’t know any other way of connecting your drum module other than what you’re doing unless you purchase a midi interface that gives you multiple inputs. There are plenty on the market. 👍🏻
please can you answer a couple of questions about what i want to do; can ableton help me with the following? 1/ I want to load backing tracks without drums onto a Ableton track 2/in each of these backing tracks i want to also load a drum rack, this drum rack with be connected to my electronic drums I would be making a set list of 30 backing tracks with separate drum racks for each of them can i buy a foot switch to move through each backing track easily when on stage?(recommendations) will the drum racks load 'immediately' either at the end of each song, or when I use the foot switch to move to this particular track ? hope you can help thx, love the vids
Hi dude, try this ruclips.net/video/XJgsmFEWSE0/видео.html :-) You can ad one MIDI track with your drum racks stacked into an instrument rack. I have here a Gear4Music DD90 Trigger-/Multi-/Sample-Pad because I dont need the internal sounds or audio to be the best quality since I only use the MIDI messages. Due to my gear addiction I also grabbed a used Behringer FCB1010 MIDI foot controller and a Novation LaunchPad mini MK3. If you only think of 1-4 single expression or foot switch pedals I could also recommend the Audiofront MIDI Expression Pedal Interfaces (Taiwan). I use their eDrumIn4/eDrumIn10 trigger to MIDI interfaces. Very sexy devices... Outstanding support. The developer/support/shipping Robert Jonkman does an awesome job. Almost real-time debugging and new firmware releases.
Hi Man, sorry for the delayed response. You've probably got this sorted out now but the answer is yes, you can do everything you mentioned in your message and Manuel has already shared some ideas with you. which would help! Hope it's all working out for you. Happy playing!

@@bid111 Hi. I wanted to continue my line of questions if i may with 2 more. As i said, i want each song on ableton to have its own track and drum rack specifically made for that particular song. My hope is to foot-switch through the tracks questions; Because each song will have its own volume, how do I mix the drum rack with the song on that same track? I need to ensure the drums are mixed right for the song, I heard that because the song and drum rack share the same track...if I change the volume of the track itself then the drums increase or decrease with the song as well, correct? Further, because i may have 25 tracks of songs and potentially 25 drum racks. How do I mix the sound so it is essentially the same volume for each song through the night annnnndddd that each drum sound in the drum rack is perfectly mixed for the particular song I will use it for I hope you understand my questions thanks
old video but THANKS, this is a great explainer in the part of the process I was struggling with, awesome!
