Ableton Live Drum Map tutorial (Getgood Drums in Ableton Live)

  • Ableton Live Drum Maps are possible. The Drum Rack in Ableton Live 9 is designed with EDM in mind. That is, the way an EDM producer would approach drums, adding samples to pads, which are usually one-shot samples. However, if you're approaching it from the perspective of a real drummer on a real drum kit, with plugins such as Getgood Drums or Superior Drummer, the Drum Rack isn't appropriate. This creates a problem, because the midi editor in Ableton Live is mapped to show the keyboard keys only. I don't know about you, but I can't remember if C1 or D#-1 is my kick drum, nor which key from B2-F#3 is the exact hi hat articulation I want. What I need is a drum map, much like you can easily create in Cubase. There is a way to do this in Ableton, its a bit clunky but once its done, you can save it for future recall.
    In this video I'm using Getgood Drums Invasion through the free Kontakt player.

    It's 2024 and I can't believe ableton doesn't feature a drum map... no wait I can't believe there isn't a standard protocol in the DAW and VST industry to automatically create drum maps when loading a... wait no, I can't believe Drum libraries aren't automatically mapped to every drum machine... BACK TO CUBASE.

    Amazing video, will defo implement it in my setup.
    Rookie question: do you still get to write drums in one central piano roll in the Kontakt midi channel and have all the sounds routed out as separate audio channels?

    • @t3tra_UK
      @t3tra_UK  8 месяцев назад +1

      Yes, this is what I was doing until I switched back to superior drummer (in fact I do the same thing with Superior). You basically end up with one midi channel, and numerous audio channels which broadly reflect your “drum mics”. Once I’m happy with the midi “performance” (I do lots of humanising for the stuff I’m working on at the minute), I record it as audio. I keep the midi as reference but from that point forward this audio tracks act like takes if I’d recorded a real drummer.
      In Ableton you change the “input” of the audio channel to the “output” channel of kontakt (don’t use 1-2, I don’t know why, it just doesn’t work lol). Then turn the monitor on the audio channels to “in” and you should get the audio routed out from Kontakt
      Hope that makes sense!

    So you still can't drag a file from the midi packs in and have all the cymbals and kicks and snare line up correctly? It's weird the drums and snares will line up after you manually select all and drag the kick drum to right spot but then half the cymbals still won't line up and it sounds like dookie.

    • @t3tra_UK
      @t3tra_UK  10 месяцев назад

      Good question, I’m not sure to be honest as I don’t use the midi packs. I’ll give it a try and get back to you, but in theory if the midi mapping is the same within the plugin, the midi files should still correspond to the correct drums/articulations. After all, a midi C1 note is still a midi C1 note, it’s just a labelling exercise

    • @FinalWordTattoo
      @FinalWordTattoo 10 месяцев назад +1

      Thanks, but I figured it out. I was just trying to drag the files straight from my external hard drive onto a track and they didn't line up correctly. But when I do it the way you're supposed to through Kontakt they work fine. @@t3tra_UK

    So i'm not sure if anyone is still reading the comments of this video. But this leaves one major hole, you can't EQ each drum part individually. If there is a way to do that, I would LOVE for someone to tell me.

  • @MixReady

    Is there a way to change the order of the notes in the piano editor, later on? With some drum libraries, some notes are below the kick and some cymbal notes are all over the place. I want to sort it so it is nice and clean like kick, snare, tom 1, tom 2 etc...

    • @t3tra_UK
      @t3tra_UK  Месяц назад

      I’m not at my computer right now, but I’m pretty sure you can click and drag the keychains (see 5:08) into the order that you want? If not, and you want it in the order that you describe, you’re best to make a custom map in your drum software so you assign the kick to C0, then the next note to the next hit you want. This is what I do with Superior as the articulations are all over the place, and like you I like to start from the kick and work up through the drums, through closed hats, open hats, rides and crashes etc

    Amazing tutorial!! But question! When you record MIDI from an edrum kit, it drops the midi notes wherever it wants, and then you have to remap it using the drum map every time you record? Is there a way to automate the remapping process?

    • @t3tra_UK
      @t3tra_UK  8 месяцев назад

      I have no experience with E-drums, but as a possible workaround, could you note down which midi notes the E drums trigger, then create a custom mapping within the plugin?
      I.e say you play your E drums, and the midi records as kick c0, snare d0, HiHat E2 etc. go into GGD into the mappings page, and manually input those values, and save the mapping as a custom map. It’s an extra step to load it but that should get you up and running?

      Unfortunately my studio is currently disassembled due to a house move/baby, hence my lack of videos lately, so I can’t really check.
      The one step some people miss as it’s quite a quick thing is to right click and press ‘show labels in midi editor’ or something like that. Sorry, don’t mean to imply you’ve missed a step it’s just difficult to know why it’s not working for you
