Watch the rest of the episode. You find out he suffers from horrible PTSD and can’t control it, so whenever he runs into someone else with a mental health issue they can’t control, he gets freaked out cause it’s like he is seeing himself and that fear turns into anger that he feels about himself but redirects it to the other person. It’s not great what he thinks, and the way he copes with his mental health obviously is not healthy or else he wouldn’t get so scared and freaked out but the show is showing how some people live normal lives with their mental health issues and can be happy like the lady with Bipolar Disorder and others like Dr Choi are angry and don’t know what to do to fix it because it’s not a physical thing that can be fixed with a surgery or transplant.

Its something that he can't control and it scares him. Most of the time he puts up the facade that he has all normal but deep inside he's scared and he's angry at himself that he cant control it which is why it freaks him out to see people who can't control it. Dr. Choi has a real concern about lithium, but he really doesn't get bipolar at all. At its worst, saying that a manic episode is "self-indulgence" is like saying someone isn't tough enough because they cried after breaking both their legs. my mom's best friend has type 2 bipolar disorder. her usual treatment's side effects started shutting down her gallbladder and her liver so she tried to go a couple of weeks without it, as to rest her body. and during those weeks, the bipolar disorder kicked in. at some point, she stopped talking to us, except when to threaten to hurt my mom. she stopped speaking to all mutual friends. she's been cut off from electricity and heat for not paying pills. she's living off energy drinks and cigarettes, over 3 packs per day.
she wasn't just my mom's best friend, but a great friend to me too. like that fun aunt who you can talk more with than a parent. the doctors say that if she doesn't receive treatment within the next couple months, she may never come out of her current psychotic state...

i’m actually surprised this was a good portrayal of a manic episode. lots of people assume that an episode of mania is simply just feeling good, but hallucinations and schizotypical behaviour also commonly presents itself. my mother has severe bipolar, but is in complete denial- so she doesn’t take meds (she is all about ‘perfection’ doesn’t use an inhaler for her asthma, denies her clinical depression). when i used to live with her it was very terrifying to be woken up about an ‘entity’ in the house that she needed to destroy. and people don’t usually understand how severe some people’s bipolar can be, and assume that i just lived with a person, who regularly switched between feeling empty or sad to amazing. (which, granted, was actually also the case- but that certainly was not the thing that made it terrifying).

Someone in my life is bipolar, had a lot of doctors tell her to pick up and get on with it but, it really doesn't work like that, and that's just coming from me as a 3rd person perspective. All I can do is try an empathize with their condition and understand that it isn't self indulgence, they didn't ask to be bipolar and take medication to treat it. When Charles did that stare down to Choi, he was totally saying "If you don't get it, then there's the door. Don't tell patients how to treat themselves, let THEM make the decision".
That being said, I can get Choi to an extent because, well we know that he has his share of battle fatigue/PTSD, we know that he's damaged and HIS way of dealing with things is to be alert and push through. I guess you could look at this sequence as someone with one condition, and then someone else with another. He has his way of dealing with his but she can't do that for hers.

"dependance on this drug" okay so a person loses a leg and we give them a prosthetic and even if it causes rashes where it can rub when walking that's okay and not "dependance" or "a problem" and they don't have to just deal with only having one leg and no replacement. A person's brain can't make the right chemicals or give them the right signals, so they go on medication to fix that and it's "dependance" and it's stigmatized and if it causes other issues it's a massive problem even if the mental disorder is worse than those physical problems and we just have to "deal with it" and "get over it". How does that make any goddamn sense?! No one tells me to give up my walking stick for my leg issues, but I've been told I shouldn't "rely" on mood stabilizers because I should just overcome my mental disorder. What the hell.

A Toronto man presented at an ER department in 2018 complaining of severe leg pain. He could not walk. Initial tests revealed no apparent cause for the pain. The staff discovered the man had bipolar disorder and discharged him. They told him there was nothing wrong with him and it was all in his head. The man was distraught. He could not stand up, he could not walk. They forced him to leave the hospital, and a nurse guided him to the exit as he crawled, crying in pain. The nurse humiliated him, saying he was faking and that he was a big boy and could stand up on his own two feet. He couldn't. The pain continued, he subsequently was sent to another hospital. They diagnosed Guillain-Barre syndrome, which is a "rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms. These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body." (Mayo Clinic). And yes, he has taken legal action against the first hospital.
