Glad to see more shows dealing with male eating disorders rather than just the teenage girl.
Glad to see this one bring up more reasons behind ED:s rather than just "Im ugLy bEcaUse Im fAt!"
There are 2 things I've sworn to never sacrifice for any kind of job; my moral sense of right and wrong, and my health.
I had a classmate who ended up becoming anorexic for a while. I was shocked to hear his story. As far as I know he is now a healthy weight.
@@harriet2114 what’s his story v
@@harriet2114 the same thing happened to one of my best friends. I noticed that slowly after a couple of months she started looking different and she wouldn’t really tell me what was happening until one time I actually saw her crying in the bathroom at herself in the mirror. It was really difficult to watch but I was able to be there for her and she’s okay now…
It’s really common thing for a teenage girl to experience that at least once so I guess that’s why they normally do eating disorders around them
Gotta love dr Charles, "who knows, maybe somebody already did"
was just about to write this. LOVE IT
Seriously, Dr. Charles is a psycopath. A benign one, an entertaining one, but still, psychopath.
@@philledwith8307 ...for wanting to treat someones bulimia?
Love Dr.Charles!
@@philledwith8307 no he’s not he just doesn’t want to see someone kill themselves because they have to “make weight”….the guy does it again and his heart will give out
I’m so glad this was covered. EDs in jockeys are a majorly overlooked part of the horse racing industry.
why do they need to be so thin? most guys i know weigh 70kgs and they expect jockeys to be around 55?
@@canned_can_chan4590 They need to be small and light so their horses can run faster.
so horse racin gis not just animal abuse but human abuse as well
so every single part of that industry is abusive
good to know
@canned_can_chan4590 The lighter they are, the faster the horse can run
Dr Charles, you sneaky SOB, this is why we love you.
Lol thought you mean shortness of breath was so confused
@@Turtleneck10 lol, been watching a few of these videos I think
What's a sob
dr charles, destroying a patients trust in doctors and making them avoid life saving treatment in the future ^^ what a man
Son of a buiscet🤭
he didn't refuse the diagnosis, he knows he has it, just doesn't care about the consequences
true
No, he denied he had an eating disorder.
He admitted to purging and taking drugs to control his weight, but he didn’t admit that he had an ED.
@dmf1301 he admitted his eating habits are not normal, he hides them because he knows a doctor will be against them, he doesn't consider them as something bad
In general people treat ED as an independent illness.
That tends to be true for anorexia, but not always. And also not for other eating disorders.
In the case of this guy, his ED is a symptom.
He genuinely cares about his career to the detriment of his health.
It's an extreme version of what many disposable manual workers do.
He just happens to have a job that has very specific demands from his body.
Yeah my ED, excoriation disorder, substance abuse, perfectionism are all symptoms of my addiction to control. It’s a shitshow 😅
Yeah like those office workers working overtime and getting heart attack
@@itsdune079 +1. I have anorexia & excoriation disorder, comorbid to my OCD.
Jep! Anorexia was linked to my ASD, perfectionism and anxiety disorder
No offence to you guys if u actually had a disorder but i doubt you would talk about it so flippantly.
eating disorders are common in the equine community. sad honestly
yes it's so sad. Plus size equestrians are bullied relentlessly even though most aren't 'too big' or too much weight for their horse and being 'skinny' is seen as 'ideal'
I have an ed
My friend that works in a racing yard is only allowed to eat every other day.
and its too normalised, especially amongst jockeys
it’s so sad to see the amount of eds caused because of insensitive people in the eq community
1:01 I love how will doesn’t let him finish and just shoves it when he is talking
Lol just interrupts him and just goes straight in
As an equestrian, it is so sad how common eds are in the industry.
It's sad that this is still how it goes. The Iceman (George Woolf) a jockey who once rode alongside the Cougar (Red Pollard) was a diabetic. He would purge himself off of food and eat high quality steaks to maintain his diabetes. He did this for years until one day he fell from the saddle mid race he died the following day. The day he died he had left his lucky kangaroo leather saddle in his car. He was 35 years old when he died.
What makes Dr Halsted different from the other doctors is that he actually engages with the patient and explains the diagnosis or what needs to happen. However, some of the other doctors kind of only do the checkups and don’t engage much with the patients. Dr Halstead is such a good guy!
Dr Charles is an icon, he’s a legend and he is the moment
NOW COME ON NOW
Dr. Charles will always be my favorite. Does anyone know when season 7 will be released?
Hey 22nd hopefully in most countries. Im so excited!
22/09, new two docs are coming. There are so many drs of med now.
Have you seen the movie he did with Robin Williams? It's called the bicentennial man. If the answer is no I really think you will enjoy it bloody amazing movie. If you have already seen it what do you think about it?
@@TJSPARKLE yes, I saw.
@@TJSPARKLE never notice he was the incel guy. See now.
As an equestrian that does eventing, xc, showjumping and dressage. At the age of 14 and 5foot8 I am to 2 pounds too heavy to be a jockey! It's so sad
Yes thats really bad.
Don't treat it as the en of the world. You can still be an equestrian rider
That's sad but then again you could just treat horse riding as a hobbie and probably end up enjoying it more.(meant as a genuine comment not sarcastic)
@@remirat3397 I'm pretty sure she's just using it as a comparison in weight between normal people and jockeys.
Or, you can fight to change the rules... Flight companies had very limiting rules concerning height and weight for flight attendants in Europe. Until some women being rejected for their height sued. There are of course still rules, but they were greatly changed. So if you really want it, try and see what and how you can change.
Lmao Charles just pulled a House stunt right there
Knew he reminded me of someone….
Who else is so pumped med is finally on Netflix?!
It's only the first 4 seasons. They're free on Amazon.
Oh wait what when and is it available in the UK??
@@kerrylang9340 yes im in uk and its available rn
In my Netflix it came out already!
@@AllyBubblesSpriggs for me the Amazon seasons are only 1-4, same as Netflix.
So much stigma around ED honestly. "Its a girl thing" "oh girls want to be pretty and popular" etc. Wishing all those managing their ED energy and hope to gain the control of their body and mind back 🙏🏽🙏🏽🙏🏽
I've been going throught something like a social ED, whenever I go out like a friends house or a restaurant and eat, I feel nauseaus, I feel that my chest is pressing so much and start feeling really anxious. But when I eat in my house, I feel safe, I have social anxiety and my therapist told me that it kinda mixed up with food.
I've been feeling better over the years, but I still feel very uncorfortable sometimes
It’s pretty crazy how relatable this is as a figure skater it’s pretty common place at least where I’m from (can’t speak on behalf of other rinks) to drop a solid 5-8kg or more when approaching a comp before we start to eat normally again it’s cool to see it in a show though!
Can’t even begin to explain how many jockeys have disordered eating habits. And exercise. Sweating it out. Anything.
This is why Dr. Charles is my favourite
Connor was mine. Miss him.
@@Carekoso yes omg
Its officially on netflix!! Already on season two, I've been binge watching this show
So why didn't they get Dr Charles to give the diagnosis of an [presumed]eating disorder? or even get him to talk to the patient?
THANK U FOR FINALLY PUTTING THIS ON NETFLIX

It’s so hard because you have one person trying to keep his weight down because of his career and the doctors are trying to help .
They should have played savage when Dr Charles said “Somebody maybe already did.”

OH MY GOD
0:29 He’s also an amazing ventriloquist
I believe that eating disorders should be treated tactfully ... A person suffering from anorexia, for example, cannot be gorged on stuff full of fat until it becomes fat. It doesn't work like that ... First, they need to admit that they have an eating disorder and wants to be helped ... and then they have to be looked after by specialists such as dieticians, psychologists / psychiatrists and a team suited to the situation. Forcing someone to eat is counterproductive.
My fave character will always be Dr. Charles!!
Dr,Charles is my fav
It’s finally on Netflix!!!!

And in The Netherlands😁
And in the uk
Wait really im going netfix now
@@18sharon93 the first four season of med and fire are on it
Eating disorders do not care what your gender is. Also, I highly doubt a jockey would want something as serious as a heart problem when riding on a massive animal which could cause the potential of falling off said massive animal. People have died from falling off horses.
They just put Chicago Med on Canadian Netflix!!!
Chiago med heard our prayers it’s on Netflix I’m so happy
Wow they spend alot of time even during the pandemic stay safe . Peace
It’s a filming set they would have done COVID tests and that beforehand for safety. There will also be additional safety but they would not have filmed that :)
To be fair this particular episode was from season 2 which aired 2016-2017. I'm sure their filming protocols have changed a lot because of the pandemic

WE GOT IN ON NETFLIX CANADA HAHAAA
Shouldn’t he be put under a mental health act??
Yes, he should
But he is free to leave against medical advice
I think weight requirements for sports should be fixed, people of different heights should be taken into consideration and the people in the professional spirt should be monitered more for eating disorders

Hello!
DR CHARLES MY MANNNNN
After watching this video. This person shouldn't refuse from listening to the hospital employees or else he might caused something that's even worst. The only way is to keep away from them is to ensure that they're actually stop doing this. Even though, he wants to get out of the hospital, he still have to understand what's his problem during the situation for himself. If he feel like he's okay, tell him that he's not feeling better than normal person. If he still doesn't want to listen, it's not the hospital employee's fault. It's his fault after his death.
Ilike dr. Charles
i just got done riding i ride every sat to im horse crazy
this is why i can't be a doctor
I'd be like ok here's an ama please sign
If he passed out in the bathroom who reported it?
Wait.... diuretics aren't drug enhancing performance, right? Why is it not allowed to take diuretics before the race?
Technically it is when you are a jockey. That makes you artificially lighter so faster. Found an article saying it was banned because jockeys abused it and thus couldn't make proper decisions in the saddle anymore...
If you think about it, it's a bit as if sumos took close to death salt amounts to get more water weight just before a fight :$
Why do they always go to NG tube for calories. Yes if they refuse oral then ng but don’t always need to do it straight away (but honestly if eating disorder often will refuse ng and require capacity assessment). Just wish they don’t advertise this as first line in tv shows
3:31 I’ll pull it out myself
I don't understand why there would even be a weight limit for a jockey. How does added weight help you? Wouldn't it hurt if anything?
4:30 😂
idk why he said he would fix the mitral valve prolapse? I have mitral valve prolapse but they didn't do anything for it the many times i've had an EKG. I was never told it was fixable in any way through anything non invasive.
@Julie B if thats possible that’s interesting! Me and another family member have had it our whole lives so for us it’s probably nothing to do really
@Julie B ah yeah. I just figured they might try to repair a congenital defect anyways, ya know! But probably sometimes they don’t if you’re doing well etc
Dude he faked being sore for a min.. uhhh
If he where to find out the doctors tipped them off he'll loose the last ounce of trust he has in them and won't seek treatment if he can avoid it. Dr. Charles may be partly responsible if he dies later.
He looks really familiar that I know
Dr Charles is a rare example of positive representation for Slytherin. ;-)
It's giving ego
I'm only watching this because I've gotten a place at a horse racing college
Why trying to save someone who doesn’t want to be saved?..
Why are these people so aggressive?
They should have let the guy finish his race. One more ride to get to his derby, right? And then make him promise to come in for treatment.
He may as well never have come back. Plus, he was dying, so if he died during the race his family could have sued the hospital for letting a suicidal patient out.
@@annabees Except he wasnt suicidal
@@annabees No, they couldn't. A patient is allowed to leave the hospital against medical advice. Which he did and I expect had to sign to leave. No doctor can force a patient to be treated. I assure you, in real life Dr. Charles would have not acted like that.
@@potocatepetlI don't precisely know the laws in America but for me it's kind of common sense that you shouldn't allow a suicidal patient to leave the hospital and that you *can* force treatment on them. And that family could be angry if you didn't. In France we have something called "non assist of person in life-threatening situation", and I'm pretty sure an average lawyer could say it's exactly that here. ED plays with your brain and you basically become technically suicidal (doing things to end your life quite quickly) without really realizing it... That being said, I agree it's an impossible case for a doctor here. Either you choose to not trust patient, save his life but might be let him sad (or even depressed) for the rest of his life. Either you choose to trust him and might be he'll die during the race...
