  • What is the Zen of Kenpo? The Zen of Kenpo is an annual weekend seminar hosted by Master Sean Kelley with the goal of helping martial artists find a balance between body and mind. Many artists face age and injuries as the progress in their training, and the Zen of Kenpo is the place to find that balance.

Key point. It’s not a period at the end of Black belt 🥋. Because you keep learning. & with my current situation it’s a must to keep practicing & studying.

Hey Dan. Osu. This is a very interesting video about The Zen of Kenpo Karate. I'd like to see more videos of this including interviews with other Kenpo Karate practitioners namely Christine Bannon-Rodrigues and her husband Don Rodrigues. Osu. 🥋👊🏼🐉🐅

Post Covid teaching of Martial Arts, and the duality of teaching Martial Arts and Self Defense …what cool subjects!
This video has many valuable “nuggets” 💎 embedded within.
Very nicely done and thought provoking Mr Dan Sensei! Osu!

That is one thing that I admire/envy about kenpo stylists are these gatherings and "brotherhood" groups. Different lineages, organizations, independents, etc. are willing to meet up and share knowledge. In Tang Soo Do (and especially American Tang Soo Do) we don't seem to have this unity, at least not on a large scale. You have local guys getting together and training, but on a larger scale, everyone sticks to their own organizations. A few years ago, a group of larger, well known Tang Soo Do organizations got together to form an umbrella group open to all Tang Soo Do stylists...it's flopped after a 2 or 3 years.

This is great to listen and learn from. This is why we learn to meditate every so often back in my dojo, our Mokuso time (which is about 2 minutes)
Sometimes, just do Sanchin/Tensho kata to wind down and focus while breathing helps

This is a great complimentary video to the series of Art of One Dojo episodes to do with Mushin and empty mind which really made me think of how that often interprets to martial arts in more of a pragmatic way.
Staying calm "empty mind" when sparring brings clarity, and relaxed and faster movements, and lack of hesitation. It helps keep the heart rate down so you don't gas easily. You go into automatic pilot like driving home in your car where you do complex movement and thought processes without thinking about them. A state of self hypnosis where your subconscious guides your actions. Not to mention that staying calm is just healthier for you avoiding hypertension and stress.
I've been watching the old Kung Fu series on streaming services and wish I could be like the character Caine who lives a hard life, taking abuse from people, living off the land but is always at peace in a state of Zen and mushin...like water! How can I achieve that in everyday life without being a Buddhist? Hmmm...
BTW I had mentioned Ed Parker's classic book "Secrets of Chinese Karate" a number of times. I can't help but think that the creator and writer for Kung-Fu, Ed Spielman, sourced material from Ed Parker's book including the final tests of Shaolin monks including branding their arms with dragon and tiger symbols. And NO they did not rip off Bruce Lee's synopsis of a similar idea that is often cited. Ed Spielman copyrighted his treatment way before.
