I also met ,Ed Parker, at a , Bob Lyles, my instructor, for a kenpo test for 5th degree black belt around 1982 in Sacramento California ( Ed Parker called,Bob Lyles, his martial arts Son). As I was walking down a school hallway I ran into him and I put out my hand to shake his hand and he shook my hand so freindly. I had my little three-year-old son with me and I asked him can I take some pictures with him, and he very nicely smilec and said yes. To this day I never notice an ounce of frustration or negative demeanor. He was a big stars Trained the biggest stars he is such a big star... Professor Ed Parker rest in peace, and I want to send my blessings to you thank you..

@@InformationIsTheEdge no im stating a fact that elvis DID earn his 1st dan black, there is no dispute with that so yes at the time of his grading he clearly had skills, BUT in no time at all he was a 7th dan now myself as a former 3rd dan black belt instructor under the proffessional karate association the PKA i can rightfully declare that you dont jump from 1st dan to 7th dan even if honourary.awarded. it has been mention by various sources over the yrs that were there and part of elvis entourage that he was buying his body gaurds gifts now elvis was desparate to be a 7th dan. but edd himself was a 7th dan and so did not have the power to award him an equal grade so EDD himself had to lick ass to his masters in order to himself be awarded an 8th dan so that he could give elvis his 7th dan. And as stated before at this time elvis was also buying Edd expensive watches, cars and yes even a house. i am not suggesting this for it is fact, even bill wallace said elvis was simply given all his dan grades apart from his 1st,
so regardlessx of what your credentials are i myself am quite disgusted that he elvis went around just like in this video parading about as if hes some kind of master and a god amongst men. hes a fake, an out of shape drug addict that had no right to be thinking himself a master and for your hero edd to make this happen is equally disgracefull. @@stevo62ful Elvis never fired a karate instructor! He had Kang Rhee as his instructor in Memphis for years. Both Bill Wallace and Chuck Norris said that Elvis was more than able to stand his ground. The footage from Memphis in the summer of 1974, does NOT represent what Elvis was about. He is clearly high as a kite, and the footage is just a demonstration. He was a major factor in promoting karate to the masses, at a time when karate was really taking off in the US. If my memory serves me right, I think he is in the Karate Hall of Fame, not because of him being a champion in the field, but what he did for the sport, promoting it for millions of people. As Chuck Norris so eloquently said, «Elvis was not the world’s best atleter, but then again, neither was I as a singer!».

@@Machomannorway There are several stories about Elvis more or less buying his black belts, I don't know if they are true or not. I think statements from over zealous fans like "world's greatest martial artist" and "Hired to train Police" is total BS though.

@@stevo62ful The two quotes you mention is rather hilarious, but in my mind, karate was a way for him to unwind and keep «sane», if you know what I mean. As Bill «Sugarfoot» Wallace said, «Elvis could never be a fighter in the sport, given what he did for a living». Ed Parker (in 1973) invited Elvis to a tournament (as a spectator), but Elvis was furious when the marquee for the tournament, read «By special appearance, Elvis Presley». Needless to say, Elvis did not attend. He just wanted some privacy and normalcy, two things that was hard to come by when you’re Elvis.

The bottom line was that Bruce Lee wanted to be famous; at any cost. His martial arts talent got him there quickly and he never wanted to be a fighter proving himself at point fighting tournaments. He was a self defense expert who trained much better than most black belts at that time. Black belts at that time that gave lessons were deconditioned, they smoked cigs and drank often. Bruce Lee started out incredibly healthy but then got into drugs like pot, hash, acid and coke. I think it diminished his skills and his decision making the last few years of his life. He was outstanding on screen, no one can take that away from him.

I think thats a fair representation of Bruce. Not invincible and not a professional fighter. But he had self defense on the mind and under his belt. He was more well rounded than most think. He liked striking and trained some grappling. That doesnt mean he was doing rear naked chokes or gogoplatas, but he knew some submissions. I do think his main goal was to make it as an action star, but he still had the real deal set of skills.
For example, just because Arnold Schwarzenegger was Hollywood action star, doesn't mean that automatically means he has to be "mediocre" or "not high level" in bodybuilding. People can he good in multiple things. There are a few actors out there that started as professional fighters with good win records that just got into acting.
