I’m 76 , I am diagnosed with moderate to severe aortic stenosis. At times I feel exhausted playing 9 holes of golfI or doing yard and garden work.
I run now and tolerate it quite well. No problems after my runs. I run 4 to 7 miles and then continue on walking 2 to 6 miles. Afterward my only symptoms are some right hip and knee soreness ( orthopedic issues I live with without any drugs ) and of course normal tiredness. The first 1 to 2 miles are the toughest. As I run more I’m able to run progressively better and faster until the end. I feel significantly better after these runs and walk workouts then before I start them. This makes no sense to me. I would appreciate your take on this.

    • @ExerciseForHealth

This is great. It sounds like your bodies energy systems changing their requirement (which is normal). Most people during steady state cardio will tend to feel worse in the first 5-15 minutes and then it gets easier as their aerobic (oxidative) energy system takes precedence.

Have had MVP forever, no problem. Got MRSA, nearly killed me and I had just been discharged with meds, but I think that was a mistake. MVP can increase chances of valve infection. Diagnosed with aortic insufficiency last year after trying to jog but getting hit with terrifying brick wall (in both 2021 and 2022) of suffocating once heart hit maximum. So, I don't recommend jogging if you have moderate aortic insufficiency-not worth risking passing out.

One of the exercises is a lying shoulder press with 8 lb weights and he said I could do a plank if I wanted. So I was surprised to see them discouraged here-he said as long as I exhaled during the weight bearing part of the press, I will definitely ask about BP and planking!

Good morning, Richard. Thank you for this video giving hope to people with aortic valve disease. You are telling patients that surgery is NOT the only option they have. Unfortunately, in my country doctors do not prescribe exercising. My father has been diagnosed with aortic valve stenosis and regurgitation. Doctors say surgery is necessary to replace the valve. My father is 75 years old and he is currently being treated with medicines for prostate cancer. We don't want him to undergo this surgery. Could you tell me, please, if he's got other options than surgery? He doesn't like exercise as he remained disable after a disk herniation surgery, but he can walk. Sincerely thank you for this video. Maybe walking in fresh air will be helpful.

Can you better define what’s considered heavy lifting? Because heavy is subjective. As a general rule of thumb, what percentage of your body weight should you stay under when lifting with your upper body and lower body?

    • @ExerciseForHealth
      @ExerciseForHealth  Год назад +5

Everyone's strength and weight is different so a percentage of body weight won't work. However, if you are struggling to lift the weight 5 times, then the weight is too heavy. You should be able to manage at least 10 reps before reaching a point of muscle fatigue where your technique/ form changes to compensate.

Anyway I work on the family farm as far as activity, cleaning up after four horses every day, feeding, movein 60lbs of hay several times a day, moving muck buckets which are 50+lbs four times a day into manure spreader. Then work outside the home two days per week. Do you think I do enough to keep fit or should I do more? I didnt include house work which is a whole other story. No prior history of cardiac issues. The only recent issue is vaccine injury from 3mRNA shots from Moderna then Covid 6 months later. That was all said and done in 2022, diagnosed in 2023 with heart valve issues.

Do athletes have an enlarged left atrium?
Multiple studies confirm that the left atrium (LA) is larger in an athletic population compared to non-athletic control groups.
    Can exercise cause atrial enlargement?

Some elite athletes even have LA
enlargement overlapping LA size seen in cardiac pathology.
I’ve was diagnosed with MVP at age 16 ….a long time ago with here and there heart palpitations. In the last 14 years I’ve been seeing a cardiologist and over that time I’ve had a slightly enlarged left Atrium. It stayed that way for about almost 2 years and then it came back down. It never returns to normal. It’s the enlargement they watch. My recent checkup shows it’s enlarged again to where it was about 10 years ago. I have no symptoms other than the odd palpitation. The Palpitations never happen during my workouts. I do high reps, multiple set full body workouts 2-4 days a week. If a palpitation comes on at anytime it’s at rest and never active. They are far and few between. I’ve been an athlete my whole life and I’m not about to quit. My workouts are my therapy. No one knows what that’s like unless you’ve done it your whole life. I’m not far off 60 and I’m in the shape where my body still resembles as if I was in my early 30’s. I’ve never experimented with any type of drugs either. Never tried smoking either. My BP is only high when I see a doctor. I check it daily. It always normal to high normal. My resting heart rate is anywhere from 48 bpm to 58 bpm. I was told the last visit about the Mitra-clip with a pig and cow valve or a mechanical one which required anti rejection meds for life…..no thx! Go with what’s most natural. Can be done through an artery. Doctors never seem to discuss or acknowledge larger hearts in athletes. It’s always good to err on the side of caution with your heart. It’s your body!!

I have MVP and it never limited me in any way. I could do anything.😊 BUT-emotional distress and inadequate sleep definitely had a negitive impact on it. A risk associated with MVP is that it increases your risk of Endocarditis and valve damage. I got MRSA a decade ago and the infection made it to my chest. I was put on oral and nasal antibiotics and discharged. Almost ten years later, I got slammed with terrifying symptoms. I thought it was my MVP acting up. Nope. My aortic valve has become insufficient/regurgitates. But I did rowing machine, leg press, Elyptical, lap swim, distance jogging, dancing and hiking in Cascade and Olympic mountains without qualms with my MVP. 😊 Unfortunately, the aortic valve makes me unable to do ANY of it. I never DID do a whole lot of strenuous upper body exersizes while standing, however. Nothing above my chest other than a few jumping jacks. I pretty much used torso and legs.😊

I'm no doctor, but hopefully the advice in this video can help you with exercise. You can try one of my cardiac rehab workouts here if that helps: ruclips.net/video/V1A9wv_Hw7Y/видео.html

true! but slowly warming up helps a lot. I'm only 32 and I have suspected wpw, bav, and confirmed aortic enlargement, aortic regurgitation and tricuspid regurgitation. I have symptoms almost 24/7. but I still exercise everyday. taking long walks once I've warmed up is one of the only times I DO NOT have symptoms
