I've been playing golf for 30yrs this is by far the one of the best videos I have been searching for the remove my self-doubt. My pre-shot routine is entirely too long which more doubt creeps into my golf game causes me to hit bad shots.

    I've totally noticed the difference with taking less time over the ball and less over-thinking, particularly when I've gotten frustrated with my game after a few poor holes. Ironically when it feels like I'm putting less effort in because I'm having a bit of a sulk, I've started hitting them better. Golf is about repeating the same motion over and over again - your muscle memory knows every millisecond of it, so it's best to step up and hit before thoughts start to interfere with your instinctive process.

      GolfUniversity It just feels like I don’t give my mind time to think about things like: 1. How I must or must not swing. 2. Whether I’m aiming correctly / where not to hit it. 3. And the main one, what my playing partners are thinking or expecting while I’m lingering on the ball. I take a few practice swings while choosing target, (no serious swing thoughts), then step up to the tee and pull the trigger within 5 seconds or a bit more. Not more than 10 seconds. My Swing and my body feel free! Applying it to all my shots (biggest effect is on the tee box though). Fairways hit averaged over 70% the past 2 rounds 😅

    I've managed to get down to 8, during friendly rounds I am shooting this and less, generally no more than 10-11 over gross when playing poorly. I am just getting back to golf (re-started in 2020) and I have anxiety over the comps. This is mainly through the first 4 holes as there is so much trouble, and also the wayward potential in my swing. I want to hit committed golf shots but when I am nervous my body doesn't move and my arms take over. The pressure I put on myself, knowing I can shoot low if I play well, the anxiety, and the frustration means I shoot several shots worse in comps..although in typing this I am realising there is a lot of negative narrative of disaster lol

So i tried to do everything I could to create pressure or "nerves" during my rounds. So I started playing for money / gambling. Not a lot , but enough to add that extra anxiety. It worked for sure. I'm not telling you to start gambling, but just find a way to add a little something to make yourself uncomfortable. I find that my anxiety comes up in a matter of a split second. Less time may be good, but it won't stop that moment of anxiety that I get, especially at the top of the backswing. Any suggestions to change the negative thoughts that lead to that anxiety? I can hit balls beautifully all day on my simulator and I immediately freeze over the ball. I also find that I feel that way mostly over my irons, not on the tee or greens. I practiced my irons all winter long with great success but I think my work on them is the reason for my anxiety. I've put a lot of pressure on my performance with them.

    • @GolfUniversity
      @GolfUniversity  Год назад +1

      What's the feeling you fear feeling if you dont hit the ball well? If you become comfortable with that feeling you won't fear it any more and therefore won't get the anxiety - the funny thing is what you fear feeling the most already exists, and you are fine so really there is nothing to fear - tune in and see if what I am saying resonates with you, then feel the feelings you dont want to feel so you become comfortable with it

    • @motodiaries8204

      @@GolfUniversity I'm pretty sure I'm feeling this way because I put in so much effort practicing and told several people how well I was hitting it. I put a lot of pressure on myself to perform well with my irons. It's also a fear of hitting the ground, which is something I've struggled with over the years. I don't have that problem in the simulator in part because the mat is more forgiving but mostly because I've worked so hard on ball striking. When I got on the course, the uneven terrain and varying lies made me feel really uncomfortable since I was used to the perfect lies of the mat indoors. After a number of really poor shots, the anxiety began creeping in and has become almost debilitating. I get almost paralyzed as I begin my swing and make horrible lunges at the ball. I don't think the problem is how I feel about hitting a single bad shot. It's more to do with living up to the expectations I set up in talking with people about my accomplishments in practice.

I'm adjusting my expectations and allowing myself a lot more time than I thought I might need but I still find it disappointing. I'm adjusting my focus to focus on enjoying the game, being out on the course, and let the scores happen when and if they do. Enjoyment of golf can't be tied to how I score or I won't be playing for long. There are too many things that you just can't control.
