So relevant and important. I started off well today on my round, blew up on holes 6--10 because I was playing defensively, towards the end of the round I said "I'm just going to commit to doing what works so well on the range" and executed. Finished way stronger than I would have if I'd continued on with the "outcome" mindset. You can't play good golf with a poor mental game. Commenting as a +2 handicap golfer going through the PGAs PGM program trying to become a PGA professional. Took my ability testing yesterday and shot 95 then 86….I fell into these bad habits yesterday and just couldn’t get it back. If your struggling just keep grinding. We ALL have terrible rounds, it’s about how we respond to it. Time for me to work on my mental game and go pass next time. Keep grinding golfers.
Thank you so much for this. I am currently a lower single trying to get my golf to the next level. I am 100% an outcome golfer during a round. I've had so many instances of being under par through 16 and coming in over par. Many times thinking about the outcome of the 18th even when I'm still on 16th!
Thank you much for the comment Matthew and so pleased you found it useful advice. You clearly have the physical natural talent so hopefully becoming process based will help you improve further.
Another great video. I'm getting back into golf after a massive break. I was playing off scratch in my 20's and now I'm 51 grinding hard to get back there. Reestablishing this mental aspect of the game has been the biggest challenge so far.
This video spoke to me because of my mindset over a missed shot or mishit. I listened to this while driving to a match play tournament and applied all you shared here. What a tremendous difference in attitude before and after a shot. We won our match! Thank you. Neil - Hull, Massachusetts
So true, true, true! Regardless of how crappy or how good you are focusing on your score is an absolute sure major fail. My adage since the early 80’s( when I was in high school and first became scratch) was “the better you get, the less fun you will have” which is strictly linked to focusing on result/ score. Trust me
This is such an under appreciated side of the game, I see many good golfers play up and down golf that could easily be at a single digit level if they kept control of their emotions! The best in the world have an almost zen like state to their play, only a few players such as tiger could play with raw emotion and use it to their advantage.
My goal is to get my handicap into single figures before I’m 60….I’ve got 9 months and I’m at 15.4 now! the mental part of the game is critical and used to be a real weakness of mine so this video reinforces what I need to focus on…nice one!
Came across your video a few weeks ago and honestly it really resonated. My attitude on the course has been terrible even though ive been playing pretty well. My problem has been collapsing at the end of rounds when in a good position. Since thinking process, Ive shot 76, 78 and yesterday 73 off my 7 handicap. Im not hitting the ball any better just thinkig better🙂 I used to play off 5 before a broken ankle set me back but I really feel ai can get back there now. Thank you bud👍
Hi Steve, Thank you so much for taking the time to write the comment. Im so pleased you have found the series so helpful and congrats on the scores. I am launching a 2nd channel in January 2023 totally dedicated to Golf Psychology so you might want to keep an eye out for that.
Found this video via the Golf Monthly Forum. As an older golfer it's just nice to see someone of a similar age giving advice. The content, although nothing radical, was explained simply and with clarity which resonated with me. Looking forward to the next two parts
@@ScratchAt50 Definitely. That is not really covered in length anywhere on RUclips. I would say a golf psychology/strategy channel would be of interest for sure. I think those combined with more emphasis on the psychological aspect would give you a sufficient amount of content to produce for its own channel. I worry you might not have enough content for the psychological aspect alone. I could be wrong though. All this to say, yes I would be interested haha.
@@ScratchAt50 Yes, definitely. For most of us, at every level of the game, we do know that it's the mental side that holds us back...we just don't know how to stop it from doing so!
Thanks for posting this mate. I don't want to be that guy that's angry and makes others feel uncomfortable. I played today using process v outcome. I didn't shoot my best score but I did hit more good shots than bad and I enjoyed myself.
Thanks Rob, it takes time to really bed the train of thought in but it's a great start if you can accept outcomes without letting it effect your mood and your next shot.. Whatever handicap were going to hit bad shots, it's part of the game, the process is to try and help one bad shot not lead straight to another one by being poor mentally on the course
Today was one of those days where nothing really clicked. I felt disconnected. I just kept making swings and finding the ball and swinging again. I would have been losing my shit deluxe normally but using the process v outcome mindset stopped me blowing my score out to something ridiculous. Thanks again for the content mate.
Your right it is a tough game however poor mental approach can make it even harder and less enjoyable. Part of the process is accepting its hard and we're going to hit bad shots.
Just right as always. I was that outcome golfer. Since 1 year (may the 50 approach😂), I was fed up with ruining my rounds with those bad shots. And I decide to change that one day, which I just wanted to put the clubs back in the car and go home : that can’t and won’t be my initial thought of playing golf !!😂 Now, each shot, each hole. And no matter what I did on the last hole, just enjoying the playing hole, and never give up. And now, each round is good (even the bad days), and often the final score is better than expected !😉. Thanks for this video, prouving that i’m probably on the good way
@@ScratchAt50 i think it’s a good idea, with some elements about the approach on the « generally » game and course management. It take time for people to go on the way of happiness with golf. Proud to have been able to take this road since 1 year, fed up of rushing on the tee and trying after to save the hole.
@@ScratchAt50 It's amazing how golf relates to life. Becoming process oriented in general allows for a much happier and successful life. Golf is such a great life teacher.
What a great subject and series! So much more helpful than watching balls compared to ProV1s etc. It just makes so much sense, it's how I did my day job for years, and is going to help my game (as long as I don't revert to thinking outcome on the 16th tee). I'm sure it is not going to happen for me overnight, but I am going to adopt this approach, I was always comfortable with routine. More like this please, Thank You👍
Really love this video and it is so true about your definition of "outcome versus process golfers". This is exactly what I have incorporated into my game and the results and enjoyment of the game have been fabulous. I would be bold enough to say that you will find that 99% of the pro tours are process golfers, especially if they are collecting checks. Thanks !
Cheers Raymond. Glad you enjoyed the series and thanks for the comment. Been amazing to see so many comments on the psychology videos from golfers who have been helped by the videos.
Awesome! I have been struggling with doubts and too thoughts going through my head while standing over the ball..today I tried the 3 steps and played amazing well Greensomes match and we won on the 13th
I feel like I strike the ball like a much lower HCP than I actually am; the scores just aren’t as low as they should be. I’m now in my second year back after not playing a single round for over 25 years, 20.3 currently. My goal is to get that to
Thanks for the comment and glad you took so much from it.. Look forward to hearing about your progress, doesn't happen overnight but stick to THE PROCESS 👍
absolutely , i never worry about my score.. i simply rate each and every shot on pureness of ball strike. how well did i strike the ball? each shot i give a score out of ten. if i shoot 78 i usually total around 250 out of a possible 780... how well you strike ball and practice to improve that aspect. the good scores will come as mere consequences of better ball striking...
I used to get bothered if I don't break 78 in EVERY round - and my coach told me that the number (score) is not the true indicator of the level of play. A lipped out putt, a bad bounce or an unlucky break in the fairway can add 2 or 3 strokes to a round. What's important is HOW MANY SHOTS did you hit where you were 100% committed to it - I believe this video is very much in the same line. Thanks for the video - something we can all bring to the course.
Cheers Zack,g lad you found it helpful. More psychology vids in the series and extra bonus psychology vids for members. ruclips.net/video/5e61A12x_4k/видео.htmlsi=gt7k6o-8_xR94Qja
Confidence comes from practice. Practice what you preach. I focus on every shot, Just as you explained. If players would just do this with focus, after practicing the game, they will score well.
@@ScratchAt50interesting! But it's not Dougherty. Do wat to thank you. Just won my flight shooting a 77 with a double bogey on the last. I truly think your series helped me. Thanks and bang on
(Personally) the mental game is highest with when you're confident in the swing. The confident swing builds from having trust in solid fundamentals. Hands, path and flexibility all being top notch
Glad the series was helpful to you Benjamin. Honestly every pre shot routine is totally an individual thing, it doesn't really matter what it is, the important thing is to repeat it every time as part of your process 👍
It would make it easier to hear you talk over the music if you applied side chain compression. This lowers the volume of the music when you talk automatically without you having to go in and make a bunch of adjustments in your audio mix.
All anxiety is based around being worried about the outcome of the shot. You have to concentrate on forming a process and routine and THAT'S YOUR GOAL TO ACHIEVE, the ball will go where it goes and then we repeat again. Do everything in your control to make the shot as good as possible, be happy with that and accept where the ball goes.
Question: After hitting 2 drives on two holes ob right, would you still driver on the same round when there is ob right, because you completly forget / ignore the last shots, or would you allow you to switch to 5w for the rest of the tight holes? So do you wver adjust your game based on the outcome of last shots? Sure you do if you hit some puts short hit it a bit harder because you use the information that greens are slower, or hit longer irons if multiples were short, but do you also adjust strategy based on the form? I am just wondering if it is a good idea to keep hitting driver when it just does not work.
So the mistake your making here is identifying the club selected as the problem. It sounds like you have lost confidence in your driver off that tee but in reality if you commit to your routine, process and then perform a good swing it wont go OB. In reality if you pushed a driver OB then with the same swing you would push a 3 wood OB unless the 3 wood wouldnt reach the OB. The focus is never on the club you have in your hand, once selected you are 100% committed and then dont give it a 2nd thought. Your focus has to be on 100% on your target, now in this instance maybe you should shift your target more to the left. Remember your next time on that tee is not influenced by what went before unless you let it. You have hit that fairway before and there is no reason why you wont hit it next time but you have to stand over the ball positively concentrating on your target not negatively concentrating on the OB. As ive said a 120 yard shot all over water is still just a 120y golf shot to a green that a solid shot will execute but we let the thought of the water make us believe the shot has been changed. On a 120 yard shot over grass we are just focusing on our target on the green and nothing changes when the shot is all over water. Hope that all makes sense..
@@ScratchAt50 Thanks for the long explanation! I usually play on the safe side with club selection, until I reach a hole where there is not much danger left or right, then use the driver, and if that worked out well I keep using it for the round even on the holes that are a bit more tricky. I maybe should make the decision before the round and then stick to it beeing sure, I am capable of using the club selected. If I hit a driver and hook it, it hooks further than the 5 wood. But you are right, I usually don't hook the 5 wood and there is not much reason why I should hook the driver more. Been using your tips about 2 years ago, but lost it somehow by the end of last year, started to get angry and completly messed up my routine. Did a ton of practise the winter in Simulator and didn't start that well into the season. I am pretty sure focusing again on the process and routine will bring me back where I was and further, and I can finally get the hcp to scratch. Thanks for that!
Super usefull, I realized I have practiced physical for years.. 3-5 hours per week and play twice a week. and I have been an outcome player the whole time. Great video thank you! I am off 2 handicap and I know I can get to scratch but my mental game isn’t good enough. I care too much, get bad thoughts like don’t go right as per the start of your video. I don’t get mad, more frustration and care too much. I’ve been level par with 3 to go so many times and finished 3+. Can you recommend anyone I could see for this please? Based West Yorkshire. Cheers
Thanks for the comment and glad you found the series useful. I don't know anyone but you could look for a sports psychologist. However if you haven't already I highly recommend reading "Golf is not a game of perfect" by Bob Rotella as a good starting point. Also available as an audio book on Audible
@@ScratchAt50 thank you for the prompt reply! Already read all his books which are extremely helpful but I just find it so hard when I have a good score :/
Process, Process, Process. Don't think about the shot, just commit to your process and routine on every shot. You must do this on every shot in practice and competition so in time it becomes more automatic. It takes time so be patient 🌝 Remember that quote which sounds very important for you "when playing golf don't be careless but there is a massive benefit to caring less" 👍
Great video! Very interested in the mental game. One point I have struggled with is having random thoughts enter my mind during a shot itself (during the swing) even though I have just stuck to the process throughout. When I get such thoughts I seem to slightly panic then during the shot (as this is all happening during the swing). I have tried to displace such thoughts by actively trying to think about the target when taking the swing but that is difficult to do in a very short space of time; swing only lasts less than 2 seconds. I have good control over thoughts before the swing or putt; its during the swing that is the issue. Any thoughts on this? Perhaps one should just accept you might get random negative thoughts during the swing..?
Stay level, stay cool, be practiced, be prepared. Just like in life DEMONS are bad thoughts, Angels are good thoughts. Always have good positive thoughts. If a negative thought comes STOP! Regroup, don’t ever lose control.
Hi , If you watch my Scratch Or Bust series where I film my competition rounds you will see that sometimes I do react negatively to a poor shot but by the time I get to my next shot it has been completely forgotten and now im just trying to stick to my process and routine to give myself the best chance of the next shot being a good one. Its natural to react in a negative way initially to a poor shot but you have to let that go straight after as its never going to turn into a positive, it will just fester. Just try and have an attitude of ok that shot may have been terrible but wait till you see the next one because its going to be great.
Read the practice manual - the ultimate guide for golfer from Adam Young, really interesting about process vs outcome vs target, has change my mind and approach of golf….. For exemple, before focus on the golf swing, hoping the correspondant outcome….and now focus target and forget the how, the body and subconscious know already how to make. Before 7 iron carry 150 y with process thinking, now 170y just by thinking and visualise the target…magical…and f..inv straight without thinking

I'm sure you had some great things to say, but I couldn't concentration with music playing in the foreground. You seemed to be in the background. If you ever make another video without the music I would be happy to watch it. Thanks
It's odd, because i've won 3 trophies this season, and in those rounds, I can hardly remember the rounds, and on the shots I do remember, I had nothing on my mind. Just make good contact. Of the rounds where I didn't do well, I blamed my round on bad shots, lies or weather. Crazy.
Yeah your right Paul , I've heard pros use the phrase "I didn't get in my own way" quite a lot when they have had a great round or won. When things are going well your mind is free and automatic
This is amazing to hear Gabriel , Im so pleased you have found the videos useful. More in depth psychology videos are available in my pro members area now if you want to continue to improve your mental game...

Thanks for the comment Derek. I can't think of many reasons why outcome works better than process. The Pros are the most competitive players on the planet and play via a process
@@ScratchAt50 True, that's how I play as well. But it's interesting cuz some players like Rahm prefer outcome thinking. They don't like thinking about feels or techniques. They claim to be competitor first then golfer. But I agree with you, I think they are more process oriented than they realize! Interesting stuff.

I am new to golf at 58 and have struggled with my performance driven mind. These are just great! I will re watch
Thanks for the comment and your are welcome. So pleased you found the series so helpful. Think there are 9 videos in the series now
Fantastic understanding of how our brains mess with our golf.
Haha, it's crazy how our brains can turn a simple swing into a disaster, right? Glad you enjoyed the video!
Thanks for the comment Paul
i LOVE THIS! AT 52, I find myself doing a lot of this!! Can't wait to use your advise.
Thanks for taking time to comment Chris and pleased you found my psychology series useful
Thank you so much. Valuable information…looking forward to implementing these concepts.
You are so welcome Dan.
Great Points. Mindsets keep us from growing as golfers.
Cheers and yes that's why I wanted to do the series as so many amateur golfers ignore this subject.
Another great video. I'm getting back into golf after a massive break. I was playing off scratch in my 20's and now I'm 51 grinding hard to get back there. Reestablishing this mental aspect of the game has been the biggest challenge so far.
I hear you Grant, if only we could bottle that fearlessness of youth 🍾
Ramming a birdie putt 3 feet past, then ramming the comeback putt in the middle of the cup.. No worries. Flop shots off bare lies 😂
This video spoke to me because of my mindset over a missed shot or mishit. I listened to this while driving to a match play tournament and applied all you shared here. What a tremendous difference in attitude before and after a shot. We won our match! Thank you. Neil - Hull, Massachusetts
Hi Neil, thanks for the comment, congrats on your match and so pleased you found the series helpful 👍
So true, true, true! Regardless of how crappy or how good you are focusing on your score is an absolute sure major fail. My adage since the early 80’s( when I was in high school and first became scratch) was “the better you get, the less fun you will have” which is strictly linked to focusing on result/ score. Trust me
Thanks for the comment John 👍
This is such an under appreciated side of the game, I see many good golfers play up and down golf that could easily be at a single digit level if they kept control of their emotions! The best in the world have an almost zen like state to their play, only a few players such as tiger could play with raw emotion and use it to their advantage.
Cheers Rob and agree 👍
My goal is to get my handicap into single figures before I’m 60….I’ve got 9 months and I’m at 15.4 now! the mental part of the game is critical and used to be a real weakness of mine so this video reinforces what I need to focus on…nice one!
Great stuff Doug, best of luck with it.
You will only do it if you truely believe you can #bepositive
Had the worst round of my life on Tuesday. This helped me so much today back on the course. It’s the video I needed. Thanks for putting it together!
Thanks for the comment Tom, so pleased you found it useful
Came across your video a few weeks ago and honestly it really resonated. My attitude on the course has been terrible even though ive been playing pretty well. My problem has been collapsing at the end of rounds when in a good position.
Since thinking process, Ive shot 76, 78 and yesterday 73 off my 7 handicap. Im not hitting the ball any better just thinkig better🙂
I used to play off 5 before a broken ankle set me back but I really feel ai can get back there now.
What a great video. Think this will really help me out .. gonna re-watch it a few times so it sinks in . Thanks

Fantastic Avi.. I wish I had learnt it when I was a junior golfer 👍 Good Luck
Thank you so much, this has helped me to focus on the moment and it takes away all of the obstacles on the course!

I am a snooker player and i believe these tips will help me, thank you😊
Yes it's definitely transferable to other sports and snooker in particular 👍
As a daytrader, psychology/mindset is everything, It’s so damn hard to translate the same thing when playing golf, golfing 15 yrs now! Tough game.
Your right it is a tough game however poor mental approach can make it even harder and less enjoyable.
Part of the process is accepting its hard and we're going to hit bad shots.
Golden, to be honest.
Thanks Andrey
Right on man!! Visualize
Cheers Fred, glad you liked the series.
great video! I used your video to help support some of the junior golfers that I am working with! Thank you
Wow really... That's amazing..
Wish I had been given some mental golf lessons when I was a junior 👍
Im thinking of starting a new channel next year just on golf psychology, would that be of interest ?
Just right as always. I was that outcome golfer. Since 1 year (may the 50 approach😂), I was fed up with ruining my rounds with those bad shots. And I decide to change that one day, which I just wanted to put the clubs back in the car and go home : that can’t and won’t be my initial thought of playing golf !!😂 Now, each shot, each hole. And no matter what I did on the last hole, just enjoying the playing hole, and never give up. And now, each round is good (even the bad days), and often the final score is better than expected !😉. Thanks for this video, prouving that i’m probably on the good way
Amen to the process Sebastian 👍

@@ScratchAt50 i think it’s a good idea, with some elements about the approach on the « generally » game and course management. It take time for people to go on the way of happiness with golf. 100% true.
At a young age golf taught me manners and etiquette.
In my older years patience and perspective.
More like this please, Thank You👍
Love comments like this Stephen, so pleased you found the series helpful..
Thanks !

I feel like I strike the ball like a much lower HCP than I actually am; the scores just aren’t as low as they should be. I’m now in my second year back after not playing a single round for over 25 years, 20.3 currently. My goal is to get that to
A positive mental approach can defo help with that as well as dedicating a lot of practice time into your short game and putting 👍
Seriously great video. I realize I'm outcome driven instead of process driven. Going to work on it - I'll report back.

realy good vid.
Cheers, glad you liked it.. There are another 2 parts to the series in case you didn't realise 👍
absolutely , i never worry about my score.. i simply rate each and every shot on pureness of ball strike. how well did i strike the ball? each shot i give a score out of ten. if i shoot 78 i usually total around 250 out of a possible 780... how well you strike ball and practice to improve that aspect. the good scores will come as mere consequences of better ball striking...
Thanks for the comment Frank 👍
I used to get bothered if I don't break 78 in EVERY round - and my coach told me that the number (score) is not the true indicator of the level of play. A lipped out putt, a bad bounce or an unlucky break in the fairway can add 2 or 3 strokes to a round. What's important is HOW MANY SHOTS did you hit where you were 100% committed to it - I believe this video is very much in the same line.
Thanks for the video - something we can all bring to the course.
I agree with your coach.
Thanks for taking the time to comment, its appreciated

(Personally) the mental game is highest with when you're confident in the swing. The confident swing builds from having trust in solid fundamentals.
Hands, path and flexibility all being top notch
Very true but the demons rear up more as you get older 😪

Such a big help for me. Any advice on developing a good Pre shot routine?
Glad the series was helpful to you Benjamin.
Honestly every pre shot routine is totally an individual thing, it doesn't really matter what it is, the important thing is to repeat it every time as part of your process 👍
It would make it easier to hear you talk over the music if you applied side chain compression. This lowers the volume of the music when you talk automatically without you having to go in and make a bunch of adjustments in your audio mix.
Thanks for the advice, appreciated.
I dont talk over music anymore, the editing software I was using 2 years ago wasnt the best 😥
Why do I feel anxious just thinking about playing. I feel anxious just watching this even though I totally believe in what you re advising
Thanks for that!
ive watched this one a bunch of times.
Thanks for the support, hope you found it useful

I don’t get mad, more frustration and care too much. I’ve been level par with 3 to go so many times and finished 3+. Can you recommend anyone I could see for this please? Based West Yorkshire. Cheers

However if you haven't already I highly recommend reading "Golf is not a game of perfect" by Bob Rotella as a good starting point.

Process, Process, Process.
Don't think about the shot, just commit to your process and routine on every shot.
You must do this on every shot in practice and competition so in time it becomes more automatic.

I have just done a Psychology video for my members about playing and putting with a free mind.
Thanks mate, it would have been a lot better if it was shorter though
Your welcome, thanks for the comment 👍
Watch Part 3 about having a quiet mind and trying to be care free.
Your thoughts are born out of fear of the outcome of your shot..
Im thinking of starting a new channel next year just on golf psychology, would that be of interest ?
Stay level, stay cool, be practiced, be prepared.
Just like in life DEMONS are bad thoughts, Angels are good thoughts. Always have good positive thoughts.
If a negative thought comes STOP! Regroup, don’t ever lose control.
Good advice
Great video. Spot on.

how do you deal with poor shots…post shot routine, etc
Cheers, I will look it up 👍

Here's a question to make you think. Would you say that a "competitive first" golfer is outcome focused or process focused?
Thanks for the comment Derek.
I can't think of many reasons why outcome works better than process.
The Pros are the most competitive players on the planet and play via a process
@@ScratchAt50 True, that's how I play as well. But it's interesting cuz some players like Rahm prefer outcome thinking. They don't like thinking about feels or techniques.
