- What is Dopamine Psychosis
Many people with schizophrenia have an increased ability to produce dopamine and appear to release unusually high quantities of dopamine during nerve cell activity. We know this from PET studies that can measure dopamine synthesis in the brains of living human volunteers, and from measures of dopamine metabolites in volunteers.
This short lecture will consider the role of dopamine in producing symptoms of psychosis, and will suggest that: in the treatment of psychosis, a little bit of dopamine blocking can a useful tool; but too much dopamine blocking should be avoided.
This lecture is part of Northeast Ohio University's education(+)consultation service, SZconsult.

This is a fantastic explanation of the dopamine hypothesis in psychosis - thank you for uploading this presentation and explaining the key points so well.
Can SSRI's bring on a psychotic episode? My good friend has become acutely unwell and complety psychotic after being put on SSRI's twice.
The drs are not sure if he has schizoaffective disorder or schizophrenia. He is lovely and highly intelligent. Just periodically looses touch with reality. Big love to all
Jo M The short answer is: psychosis in response to SSRI treatment is a rare occurrence but is nonetheless possible as a side effect.
I’ve started writing a more detailed response to your very interesting and important question. I’ll post the longer reply on my blog soon - and will let you know when it’s available.
SSRIs are likely to turn on the gene associated with bipolar if you are predispositioned genetically for bipolar. And SSRIs can definitely bring on an episode of psychosis.
Really nice to hear the history as well, thanks!
Love the explanations
Why does your brain want to figure out the significance of a stimulus? Is this relevant to survival? Or just to stave off boredom? Survival. How does the brain become aware of a stimulus? Senses. If your senses work differently, as they do in schizophrenics, could this cause a differences in dopamine, especially when you consider the development of the brain?
Thank you for the video! I may be in the wrong place , do you only educate on Schizophrenia? I would really appreciate hearing your take on Adult ADHD , relating to Dopamine. Or can you suggest where I can go to learn more? I thank you!
